Medal of Honor: Airborne Final Hands-On: Floating to Your Doom and the Spoils of War

We've survived the first mission of this wartime first-person shooter intact, and we're back with a full status report.

What could a World War II first-person shooter do that hasn't been done before? Well, if our time with Medal of Honor: Airborne is any indication, there's still plenty of room for the genre to grow. We played through the first dramatic level of the game this week, and we're impressed with just how visceral and exciting it was. So grab your grenades and ready your parachutes, because you won't have long to wait; Medal of Honor: Airborne ships in less than two weeks.

The game begins with a brief introduction to the mechanics of parachuting--and it's a good thing, because it's not as easy as it sounds. Steering to the proper destination takes a good deal of precision, and you need to be conscious of your speed and facing. You can flare your parachute to slow you down, but gravity is inevitable. Actually making the landing also seems tougher than you'd expect, but if you manage not to botch it in the Xbox 360 version, you'll have a shiny new achievement to show for it. When parachuting, you're looking for the green clouds of smoke, where you'll find relative safety and a number of friendly troops to provide covering fire.

Making a flared landing is tougher than it sounds.
Making a flared landing is tougher than it sounds.

The first level, Infinite Mischief, is the very definition of trial by fire. As 82nd Division paratrooper Boyd Travers, your task is to destroy four antiaircraft turrets in the Sicilian city of Adanti. You will choose your loadout before the mission even begins, though it's worth noting that you can exchange your current weapon with those you find on the battlefield later. Faced with a few options, we armed ourselves with an M1928 Thompson submachine gun, an M1 Garand rifle, and a trusty Colt .45 handgun. Once the mission loaded, we had little time to react, and after a brief cutscene, we descended nervously toward the looming city.

It didn't take long for us to notice that this isn't your typical linear shooter. We could land essentially anywhere we wanted to, and in our first attempt, it happened to be smack-dab in the middle of a throng of enemy soldiers who were quick to fill us with lead. It was immediately clear just how important our parachuting skills would become, because the better you steer, the better your chances are of staying alive for the mission. We improved in our second attempt, landing safely on a rooftop and surveying the situation below.

The iron-sights view gives you plenty of room to maneuver.
The iron-sights view gives you plenty of room to maneuver.

But things looked pretty bleak, considering the battlefield teeming with enemies. The recoil on our tommy gun made it tough to fire with accuracy, so we decided to play with the iron sights. When you switch to this view, you're no longer able to move, and the movement controls become leaning controls. This gave us a lot more freedom of movement than we were used to when leaning in other shooters, so we were able to pick off multiple targets without moving from our position.

Drop Zone

We eventually made it to the ground, where we started to make progress toward the first turret. Even with the help of our fellow paratroopers, we had to move slowly and carefully. You won't run-and-gun in Medal of Honor: Airborne. Careful aiming is important, and you need to be constantly aware of your surroundings. As far as we can tell, you aren't able to lie prone. However, we made good use of sandbags and other objects to stay hidden. From behind these objects, you can enter the iron-sights view and lean forward to pop out from behind your cover and take potshots at your foes. If you're used to cover-focused games like Gears of War or Rainbow Six: Vegas, it may take a few moments to get used to the scheme, but it didn't take us long to get comfortable with staying out of harm's way until we could clear out enough room to move forward.

Earning medals gets you weapon upgrades.
Earning medals gets you weapon upgrades.

Then the mission got even tougher, given that two of the antiaircraft turrets were on the roof of a large, multistory mansion. A sniper at the top made it tough to advance--in fact, this part of the game reminded us of the infamous "Sniper Town" level of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Once we made it through, we found the roof was no picnic either. The game throws a multitude of enemies at you, and the artificial intelligence is tough. Your enemies rush into buildings to pick you off from windows, flank you from all sides, and move to higher levels for a better shot. Through it all, they are constantly chattering in Italian, which gives the impression that these guys are indeed coordinating their attacks. Your teammates do the same, urging you to look out, calling you by name, and shouting at you to press forward.

As we became more familiar with the weapons, we started to become more proficient with them and unlock upgrades. After a run of successful kills with the tommy gun, we earned a pistol grip for it, which made us even more accurate. Whenever you earn an upgrade in this manner, the game goes into slow-motion, reminiscent of the "bullet time" sequences of shooters like Max Payne, which gives you a chance to savor the moment. And speaking of achievements, those obsessed with earning them in the Xbox 360 version will be happy to note that you start earning achievements from the moment you begin playing, so expect your skill to pay off immediately.

The production values in Medal of Honor: Airborne are terrific, thanks to the Unreal 3 engine, which powers the graphics. The level of detail in the environments is impressive, down to the clutter of ransacked rooms and the detailed textures of the mansion's walls. The lighting and shadows are also striking. Bright spotlights provide a contrasting glow against the darkness of alleys and balconies, and shadows flicker against stone walls and iconic statues. The sound design will also grab you. The din of battle is constantly bombarding your senses, and it imparts a frightening sense of urgency.

The level of environmental detail is fantastic.
The level of environmental detail is fantastic.

We've only scratched the surface of Medal of Honor: Airborne, but we're impressed by what we've seen so far. Rather than a linear crawl from one objective to the next, the game lets you accomplish your goals in any order you wish, from any direction. It's an impressive and daunting way to begin your missions, and we look forward to seeing if the full game can carry that momentum from beginning to end. With any luck, Airborne will prove that World War II shooters still have a lot to offer, and we can't wait to get our hands on the final game.

im sick of WW2 shooters but hells highway looks a 100 times better then this, the graphics and physics are outdated and i am playing it on HD, this game dosen't even have as good graphics as call of duty 2 which came out 2 years ago, the only thing i liked about it was how you could upgrade weapons after killing a lot with it.

"Evilbunz, name one PS3 game that looks half as good as Gears of War.You can't.I own a PS3 and an Xbox 360 so I would know that at the moment, the Xbox 360 destroys the PS3 in terms of grpahics.Could that change in the next few years? Maybe. But if it was so much more powerful, wouldn't it look at least as good? The previous Madden games were ported from the PS2 to the Xbox and the Xbox versions still looked better." The worst picture you can find of Killzone 2 looks as good as the best picture you can find of Gears of War.

Gave the demo a look last night and will try it again but my first impression's not good to be honest , reasons default controls horrid and the AI of the enemy seemed like it was from the ps2/xb era at it's worst ? given the competition of recent bioshock and cod 4 and halo3 ppfffffffffff this games in trouble for me

Just played the demo. The default controller config is just BAD. I think I settled on 2. As mentioned earlier, the sighting down the weapon mode haults your movement, causing your left analog stick to do fully analog leans. This is the first time I've used lean on a console game, where it felt useful, and not awkward to pull off. On top of that, you can actually peakup, duck down with full analog control. This is AWESOME when sniping because you can make very smooth leans, creeping up on ZE ENEMY! The graphics in the demo looked pretty good. I like the look when you get shot, a LOT less annoying then the COD2 look when you get shot. The bad...it's another ww2 shooter, AND it's made by EA, which I can't take too seriously when it comes to FPS's. The grenade explosions are also a bit weak. You also can't rapid fire with the colt, which is WEAK imo. Those are the only complaints I have about the demo. I still think for "next gen" fps, we should have bullets that penetrate certain types of objects, thats not a lot to ask. But props for the analog leaning and bobbing, that's pretty innovative for consoles. Now if theirs a way you can combine that with the cover system of Rainbow Six, the Vehicles of Halo, and the features of Perfect Dark, we might another groundbreaking console FPS like GE was so many years ago

the graphics are not outdated..... unless you dont have an hdtv then i dont know. Game looks very nice.... i never payed fps games this is gonna be like my 2nd afer allied assault looks nice. and the 360 controls are shyt... i hope you can change them 2 w/e you want. Also the reason why 360 madden looks better then ps3 is because THEY PORT GAMES OVER!!!!!! why??? because its alot cheaper. Thus not using ps3 power. (make a game for 360 port it 2 ps3). All first party ps3 games looks 100x better then any 360 games...

The guy who wrote this article needs to look it over. Like this. "Medal of Airborne: Airborne" Also the fact that you can move around in iron sights, well you can in the pc version. Don't know about the 360/PS3 though. Give you yet another reason why pc gaming owns console, at least in the fps genre. Anyway, I'm definitely getting this one. Best MOH since Allied Assault. I think this out will put Cod1/2 out for good.

I wonder how long this game will be. I hate paying $60 and getting a ten hour game. Also it is dumb that you can not lay down. The first thing you do when being shot at is, get down!

This game looks pretty sick for both systems PS3 and 360 but only time will tell who will et the better graphics just like how the 360 got better graphics than PS3 on Madden but this time around I think this game will take the fat slice of meat 2win on the PS3 version

I just played the demo on 360 TWICE. I freaking HATE to love this game. The graphics look outdated but the action is OUTSTANDING to say the least. It reminded me of the very first medal of honor that mission in africa at night. I was going to COMPLETELY IGNORE airborne. I AM fedup with WWII shooters specially after how much COD3 SUCKED, but I HAVE to say it, this game's action and score are excellent from what I saw in the demo.

"The recoil on our tommy gun made it tough to fire with accuracy, so we decided to play with the iron sights. When you switch to this view, you're no longer able to move, and the movement controls become leaning controls." well, not really true, and everyone know by now that you can press shift to move while using ironsights- though i dont know the story with the 360.

Unlike 'noirsake', i'm not at all sick of ww2 fps games... but unless you watched the "Start Anywhere" trailer of the game, and were TOTALLY blown away... you won't be all that impressed with the demo. I suppose that it met my expectations.... but there was nothing special in it for me. the three biggest cons for me are: the extremely difficult-to-use ironsights, the inaccurate MP40 ironsights, and the over-use of post-processing effects - which do not run well on most systems. It ran at a good fps level on my PC, but there was very noticable amount mouse lag. overall... i'd say it's about as good as CoD1 is today.... (which is 'ok')

I played the demo. I am not a big fan of shiny face textures that started with COD 2. Gameplay is same. Graphics are a little bit better than your average MOH. Free roam in the level is a welcome change. It changes game play. Multi should be fun.

Sooo many shooters coming out. Bought Bioshock on the release date and have Halo 3 on reserve. Now Airborne, CoD 4, Orange Box, I know there are probably more that I haven't listed. Too many titles in such a short period of time.

It is a good game, but there are some subtle difficulties and control problems with the game, that if were fixed would maybe make it better than CoD 2.

Just played the demo and I have to say, this game has some HORRIBLE particle effects for bullet impacts (worst impacts ever), explosions (horrible grenade impacts) end even smoke effects (look at the green smoke in the game)! Truly a shame because the rest of the game looks great (fantastic character models). But it's not a surprise, lots of developers have a hard time (or just don't care) to create some great particle effects, Infinity Ward is a good example, "Call of Duty 4" has some great graphics for character models ect. but the particle effects (especially bullet impacts), from what i've seen so far in movies, are just weak and miss power. Relic Entertainment on the other hand did such a amazing job on "Company of Heroes", in my opinion that game has the most amazing graphics ever, the particle effects in CoH are simpely amazing, so powerfull it pulls you right in the game, fantastic attention to detail, talk a bout some great immersion! The Developers of "Medal of Honor: Airborne" and others (i'm look at you Infinity Ward) should learn from the talented folks at Relic Entertainment. p.s. And no, I don't think the particle effects are bad because it's still a demo. They are bad because the developers lack the talent to pull it off like Relic did.

nice preview, but thier are two things i can add too, they said once to go to ironsghts you cant move but lean insted but thats not quite true, when your in your ironsights you movement does become leaning, but if you hold down the Sprint button you can move well in ironsights, you can also Lean First then hold the sprint button you lock yourself in a lean and then move. also you can go prone, if you crouch bring up the ironsights and press down, you get even lower, which i can only guess would be lying prone
