Metal Gear Publisher Konami: Mobile Is Now Our Main Platform

Corporation will "pursue mobile games aggressively."

A key executive at Konami has said the company will "pursue mobile games aggressively" going forward, and that smartphones will be considered as its "main platform."

Speaking to Nikkei, as translated by a user on gaming forum NeoGAF, Konami company president Hideki Hayakawa said the future of gaming is in mobile.

"Our main platforms will be mobiles," he began. "Gaming has spread to a number of platforms, but at the end of the day, the platform that is always closest to us, is mobile. Mobile is where the future of gaming lies.

"With multiplatform games, there's really no point in dividing the market into categories anymore. Mobiles will take on the new role of linking the general public to the gaming world."

In recent Konami financial reports Konami highlighted free-to-play design driven games as key areas of success for the company. Hayakawa said this strategy would be a key focus going forward.

"Following the pay-as-you-play model of games like Power Pro and Winning Eleven with additional content, our games must move from selling things like 'items' to selling things like 'features,'" he said.

"We saw with these games that even people who buy physical games are motivated to buy extra content. The success of Power Pro especially has motivated us to actively push more of our popular series onto mobile than ever before."

It's important to note that Hayakawa was being interviewed for a business focused publication and, as such, it is in his interest to buoy the area of his company's operation that has shown to be the most successful in Japan.

Additionally, the Japanese market has already largely shifted to be mobile-oriented, with even the biggest console game developers creating experiences tailored for mobile devices, as evidenced by Nintendo's recent move towards the market.

Nintendo's entered into a deal with the global mobile games publisher DeNA to create "new gaming applications featuring Nintendo IP, which [both companies] will develop specifically for smart devices."

In previous earnings reports, Konami has mentioned its intention to expand its mobile game operation multiple times. Although Hayakawa's latest quotes aren't a surprising new statement of intentions, they do serve as the most direct example of Konami's diminishing interest in consoles.

Elsewhere in the interview, Hayakawa said the company hopes "that our overseas games such as Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Winning Eleven continue to do well, but we are always thinking about how to push our franchises onto mobile there too."

It is expected that Metal Gear maestro Hideo Kojima will leave Konami when the latest entry in the series is out.

Konami has removed the Kojima Productions logo from official artwork for The Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes, as well as references to titles being "A Hideo Kojima Game" from marketing material.

The Kojima Productions logo was also removed from the Silent Hills/P.T. website, before Silent Hills was outright cancelled.

Another sad day of us gamers & the gaming community(console & PC). MG was not made for "mobile gaming" never has and never will.

ImO this might be the reason Kojima was asked to leave if so I give him even more credit.

Konami you're doing a great job of becoming another hated group!!!

MGS:V will be my last Konami game & if they take off Kojima name of the credit I'll cancel my pro-order today!

I don't think I'll ever understand the appeal of mobile gaming.

If I'm away from my gaming systems at home, it's generally because I'm producing at work, learning at school, socializing with friends, fishing by myself, etc.

I know I'm in the minority though, since mobile obviously makes an obscene amount of money.

@barbarossa213: Mobile makes money because the original games they played were casual games, an area that Nintendo ruled, but since mobile became the beach of casual gamers Nintendo took a fall, Nintendo begun to set a plan to make itself profitable, Nintendo won't port their IP on mobile rather they will produce new content and publish demos on mobile to incentive their own IP sales.

That's why konami says the market shifted in Japan, but that just specualtion, Nintendo won't give up on consoles nor on consoles exclusives.

Nintendo however was casual in first place Konami was a place for hardcore gamers, they won't change their IP and casual will either stay away or become Hardcore themselves, once they do they wil jump towards consoles or PC.

Mobile do make small amount of money, very small amount but the mobile companies posses very small amount of work force thus small effort, fast development, big profit.

Another thing Tri-Ace(Star Ocean) was bought by a mobile developer, but neither Tri-Ace nor the Mobile developer wants Tri-Ace to stop creating console games, they want one helps the other becomes the best in each area.

@crashmer: After MGSV, he's gone. It's his last game with the company. Thus cancellation of Silent Hills.

Basically put, finishing that game ends his employment contract with Konami...on Konami's part. Meaning Kojima was technically "let go" (aka fired).

@shockwave_mdk: I play games on my phone...but for like 5 minutes when I'm on break at work; unless I bring my Vita or 3DS with me. Compare that 5 minutes to me playing an hour yesterday on my PS3. It's nothing.

I don't buy a thing in those games, and a couple are hacked or I abuse other games with phone settings to skip the time limitations.

And if I wanted to I could play Pokemon Red on my phone thanks to emulation.

Konami's suite of NES games is what got me into gaming in the 80s. To see it all come to this is heartbreaking.

That thumbnail image is very fitting. Though the company have gone to sh*t, the massive library they brought to gaming was certainly no small addition to gaming. *Salute*

Oh yes, because mobile gaming pays off sooo well, right? I mean sure I cant deny the money some games make on mobile and the risk probably being smaller and what not. But the fanbase you might have had will be gone. Your "good" name will become a joke.

@Acillatem1993: Mobile gamers buy one or two games a year, and there's thousands of mobile companies trying to profit, a big company like Konami will fall really fast.

@BassMan: No, that would just prove their point. Everyone that is remotely interested in Metal Gear should buy it new. That would send the message that we care about their big franchises and don't want them to become some F2P atrocity.

@Wild360: the franchise is over after v. who cares what happens next... if people want to pirate the game or buy used, so be it. konami deserves a financial loss based squarely on their idiotic behaviour as a company and mistreatment of its fans. their other big franchises are also not coming back so there is nothing to prove here.

@Sohereiam@flyersfan87: Kind of hope Kojima does some sort of "flash forward" scene and seriously kills every single character in the game lol Also push the story into a wall so whoever takes over has a hard time milking it without cliche routes.

@sargentpsgamer@Sohereiam@flyersfan87: While a revenge like that would be interesting, it would be more fun see Konami file for bankrupt due their dumb business practice and Kojima gaining enough money and buying all Konami IP's.

What impress me most, is how dumb a company head can be.

They kicked one the most popular developers in the world to sink themselves in the mobile delusion.

Mobile game players are casual gamers, casual gamers are gamers that play a 10-15 minutes a day to 1 hour or little more in the whole week.

Mobile gamers doesn't have 40 games on their cellphones, nor they spend hours playing on them(specially since the cellphone battery doesn't last) if a mobile gamer stays on home playing on a cellphone or a tablet and use a powercord to that, they will change for a bigger screen and a more comfortable position, may it be a TV and console or PC/Notebook.

Mobile Gamers play only one game per time, till they get boring(which takes a long time since they play very little) or finish it(the shortest game can take months), once they buy a game they never buy another, if they mobile gamer bought a they can no longer be counted as public target, so at end Konami will have to compete in a dire market that their public target buy's only one game of one company per year or more, they will have to compete with free companies like Angry Birds developer, they will have to compete with paid companies.

kickstarter is the future model of gaming for the AA and indie space. we will see spiritual successors to all the franchises we love funded in this way. new contra, castlevania and silent hill like games will make a triumphant return eventually (bloodstained is already here). they will have a different name but share the same spirit and i am fine with that.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the disagreement with Kojima Productions?

Konami: We want you guys to switch to mobile games after MGSV.

KP: But we make AAA games. We want to compete with guys like Rockstar.

Konami: You will be rockstars on mobile now.

KP: OK Bye .
