Microsoft Buys Activision Blizzard In Deal Valued At Nearly $70 Billion, Bobby Kotick Staying On As CEO

The Xbox company has acquired Activision Blizzard in the company's largest acquisition in its history.

Following reports, Microsoft has now officially announced it has acquired Activision Blizzard in a deal valued at nearly $70 billion. This is Microsoft's biggest acquisition in history of any type, and it is the biggest gaming acquisition in history by a huge margin.

"Over many decades, the studios and teams that make up Activision Blizzard have earned vast wellsprings of joy and respect from billions of people all over the world," Xbox boss Phil Spencer said. "We are incredibly excited to have the chance to work with the amazing, talented, dedicated people across Activision Publishing, Blizzard Entertainment, Beenox, Demonware, Digital Legends, High Moon Studios, Infinity Ward, King, Major League Gaming, Radical Entertainment, Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games, Toys for Bob, Treyarch, and every team across Activision Blizzard."

Now Playing: Xbox Buys Activision Blizzard For Tons Of Money, Bobby Kotick To Leave in 2023 | GameSpot News

Until the deal closes, which is projected to happen during Microsoft's FY2023 (July 2022-June 2023), Microsoft and Activision Blizzard will operate independently, Microsoft said. If and when it does go through, the Activision Blizzard team will report to Spencer as the CEO of Microsoft Gaming.

Spencer said Microsoft will add "as many Activision Blizzard games as we can" to Xbox Game Pass for PC and console, including new games and catalog titles.

Spencer went on to say that buying Activision Blizzard will help "accelerate our plans" for cloud gaming. "Activision Blizzard games are enjoyed on a variety of platforms and we plan to continue to support those communities moving forward," he said.

Activision Blizzard has made headlines of late regarding its many controversies and lawsuits involving its corporate culture and leadership under CEO Bobby Kotick. Spencer said Microsoft is "committed to our journey for inclusion in every aspect of gaming, among both employees and players."

He added: "We deeply value individual studio cultures. We also believe that creative success and autonomy go hand-in-hand with treating every person with dignity and respect. We hold all teams, and all leaders, to this commitment. We're looking forward to extending our culture of proactive inclusion to the great teams across Activision Blizzard."

In its own statement, Activision Blizzard confirmed that Microsoft will pay $95 per share to acquire Activision Blizzard, for a total payout of $68.7 billion if the deal goes through. In buying Activision Blizzard, Microsoft will also take ownership of massive franchises like Call of Duty, Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch, as well as Activision Blizzard's eSports endeavors. Activision Blizzard's numerous studios and almost 10,000 employees will also become part of Xbox going forward, it would appear. Microsoft will have 30+ internal game development studios following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

As part of the buyout, Microsoft shared an image of the "Gaming Leadership Team," with Phil Spencer at the top as CEO of Microsoft Gaming. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, who has been in the middle of ongoing lawsuits regarding sexual harassment and discrimination, will remain CEO of Activision Blizzard. Whether or not Kotick is staying on at Activision Blizzard after the deal closes remains to be seen. It's been reported that Kotick will leave Activision Blizzard if/when the deal is finalized.

"Bobby Kotick will continue to serve as CEO of Activision Blizzard, and he and his team will maintain their focus on driving efforts to further strengthen the company's culture and accelerate business growth," Activision said.

"Gaming is the most dynamic and exciting category in entertainment across all platforms today and will play a key role in the development of metaverse platforms," Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said. "We're investing deeply in world-class content, community and the cloud to usher in a new era of gaming that puts players and creators first and makes gaming safe, inclusive and accessible to all."

Kotick said in a statement: "For more than 30 years our incredibly talented teams have created some of the most successful games,. The combination ofActivision Blizzard'sworld-class talent and extraordinary franchises withMicrosoft's technology, distribution, access to talent, ambitious vision and shared commitment to gaming and inclusion will help ensure our continued success in an increasingly competitive industry."

Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard is subject to the standard closing conditions and a regulatory review, as well as approval from Activision Blizzard's shareholders. The deal has already been approved by the boards of directors at Microsoft and Activision Blizzard. If all goes to plan, the deal is expected to close in fiscal year 2023 (July 2022-June 2023).

This is just the latest massive acquisition from Microsoft, following its buyout of ZeniMax/Bethesda.

Xbox Statement On Activision Buyout

"As a team, we are on a mission to extend the joy and community of gaming to everyone on the planet. We all know that gaming is the most vibrant and dynamic form of entertainment worldwide and we’ve experienced the power of social connection and friendship that gaming makes possible.

As we pursue that mission, it is incredibly exciting to announce that Microsoft has agreed to acquire Activision Blizzard.

Over many decades, the studios and teams that make up Activision Blizzard have earned vast wellsprings of joy and respect from billions of people all over the world. We are incredibly excited to have the chance to work with the amazing, talented, dedicated people across Activision Publishing, Blizzard Entertainment, Beenox, Demonware, Digital Legends, High Moon Studios, Infinity Ward, King, Major League Gaming, Radical Entertainment, Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games, Toys for Bob, Treyarch and every team across Activision Blizzard.

Until this transaction closes, Activision Blizzard and Microsoft Gaming will continue to operate independently. Once the deal is complete, the Activision Blizzard business will report to me as CEO, Microsoft Gaming.

Upon close, we will offer as many Activision Blizzard games as we can within Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass, both new titles and games from Activision Blizzard’s incredible catalog. We also announced today that Game Pass now has more than 25 million subscribers. As always, we look forward to continuing to add more value and more great games to Game Pass.

The fantastic franchises across Activision Blizzard will also accelerate our plans for Cloud Gaming, allowing more people in more places around the world to participate in the Xbox community using phones, tablets, laptops and other devices you already own. Activision Blizzard games are enjoyed on a variety of platforms and we plan to continue to support those communities moving forward.

As a company, Microsoft is committed to our journey for inclusion in every aspect of gaming, among both employees and players. We deeply value individual studio cultures. We also believe that creative success and autonomy go hand-in-hand with treating every person with dignity and respect. We hold all teams, and all leaders, to this commitment. We’re looking forward to extending our culture of proactive inclusion to the great teams across Activision Blizzard.

Around the world, there is no more exciting venue for fun and connection than video games. And there has never been a better time to play than right now. As we extend the joy and community of gaming to everyone, we look forward to welcoming all of our friends at Activision Blizzard to Microsoft Gaming."

Microsoft is aggressively trying to take over the global videogame industry and gamepass is part of it. I've been saying this for awhile. Check my comment history. They have wanted to do this from the start. This is very, very concerning. Chinese firms will have to step in and make an alliance with Japanese game companies.

@revengeance: Can't help but think back to the days before Xbox was even a thought. Bill Gates said in an interview that Microsoft would NEVER produce a home console.

Times have certainly changed.

@johnny0779: Just out of curiousity, why aren't you ripping Spencer apart for backpedaling on his stance towards Activision? Not only did he totally back down, but he jumped into bed with them AND is paying them off at that. You were so vocal about Ryan "backpedaling" on his word about PS4 manufacturing which was SO much less in comparison.

Oh, and before you say "U mad?", I bought Activision stock. Believe me, I'm not mad. 🤣🤣🤣

I like to think of the gains going to all the indies (gaming, music) I buy/sub to each month.

@Barighm: Phil Spencer is doing exactly what we wanted, freeing Activision from the bad actors including Kotick....Kotick naturally has to stay at Activision as the CEO while Phil Spencer closes the deal and takes over.

You just can't fire someone if you don't own the company first....simply logic.

@Barighm: Microsoft has FIVE times the market cap of "massive media conglomerate" Tencent. They can afford to lose huge amounts of money to expand their control and influence like they did when they entered the industry. And their gaming division is not just xbox, it's windows as well. Their presence will become even more intrusive than it already is. But my biggest fear is what might happen to the japanese side. I despise hollywood and American gaming culture. Anglo cultural influence in games is currently a disaster especially with the proliferation of low IQ, talentless youtubers, twitch streamers, and news and review sites filled with tasteless hacks.

Pretty short-sighted.

Try Apple, Google, Amazon, Netflix.

@Pyrosa: Because it's their only realy console competitor. google/amazon is not relaly in that market, and netflix is a spec of dust compared to them why would they compete with it, Microsoft could easily buy them if they where in that type of business but they are not.

@Pyrosa: I'm aware. I've argued on this site that Chinese investment in gaming is good primarily because it can help counteract the influence of American tech monstrosities which are poised to swallow up the japanese competition. If this comes to pass, it will be a total disaster.

@silv3rst0rm: Actually, that would cause anti-trust concerns. Even if buying Activision suddenly double Xbox's revenue, that would only put them on par with everyone else. And apparently nobody is close to Tencent.

@Barighm: Correct, Tencent is number 1.

Even with Activision/Blizzard this only makes Xbox 3rd largest in the industry, which is why this should be approved by regulators.

With this acquisition Sony must be rethinking carefully if they should spend the money in a service that they might have to shutdown for lack of powerful 3rd party support....even Japanese developers would not choose Sony over Microsoft now.

Sony not having ANY of the Bethesda or Activision games on their "GamePass model" is a huge shortcoming....Call of Duty just on Xbox GamePass alone is something to rethink your strategy about.

@johnny0779: Actually, Japanese devs generally turn to Nintendo when they're not sure to choose as evidenced by the ridiculous number of JRPGs and other weird Japanese indies you see popping up on the Switch. As noted the other day, Monster Hunter Rise hit 8 millionunits on the Switch alone which is pretty impressive considering its penetration isn't that high yet. That said, there is still a huge number of JRPGs and similar titles on the horizon for the PS5.

And Sony did make a decision: they chose to put their money into building a new chip manufacturing plant to address the chip shortage. Theoretically that could bring in way more revenue than any one gaming acquisition since now we're talking about producing hardware for practically every industry on the planet.

@Barighm: You just missed the fact that this acquisition is of Earth shattering proportions, having Microsoft potentially be the most successful gaming company in the world.

Microsoft+Bethesda+ Activision would simply have an incredible amount of revenue.

The gaming world have changed all fir Microsoft's benefit.

Microsoft have tried to buy Sega then turn to SONY back before Playstation and no again then they try Nintendo that laugh their ass out until MS quit the table then they tough ok they don't want to work with us so lets make them damage and they bought RARE to get Nintendo down to their knew does it work... at least a couple years, the Gamecube era when they where competing with the OG Xbox but where Nintendo is now... at the very top of sales charts and where is RARE... at the MS hidden cemetery where developers goes to die...

All their studio can't come up with AAA games since late 2008-2009 more than a decade now... they are so desperate that they bought everything else until the other will have to make them deal to have some piece of the cake...

Japan doesn't want anything to do with XBOX and this is the case for the vast majority of ASIA and a couple other place in the world except US,UK,EURO a little

There are out there more studio with more talent that actually bring quality things to the table so i'm not worried at all

MS can't manage 5 studio back in the day they certainly can't manage all those so inevitably we will see AGAIN an exodus of brains like a bleeding wound to others studio that actually made game cause for someone in this industry to get good job must had in their folio something to show to get paid more for the next project so yeah in a couple of years we will not ear anything from them again and everyone with talents will go to other dev team outside the MS sphere of influence

Issues with monopolistic, anti-competitive behavior aside...

You know what would be neat? A crossover between the Starcraft and Halo universes. Halo Infinite is already starting to mess with time travel, and superhero movies and shows have normalized the idea of the multiverse, so it wouldn't be much of a stretch.

Think about it. Starcraft and Halo settings feel like they could be variants of roughly the same thing. So, you connect them somehow, and see what the Xel'Naga think of the Forerunners, what the Terrans and UED think of the UNSC, what the Protoss think of the Covenant, and what the Zerg think of the Flood.

This could also be used as an excuse to reset the Starcraft fiction and make it good again, after Legacy of the Void's ending kinda ruined things and made it feel more like Lord of the Rings

@Spartan_418: The franchise you seek is called Warhammer 40,000, which has been around since the 80s. Starcraft is the most utterly blatant ripoff of W40K (but nowhere near as good), and the Master Chief sure looks a heck of a lot like a Space Marine.

@epic_g_ame08: I never thought this studio would sell out to anybody let alone Microsoft dude. Like understand the power mover here and it's a big power move none the less. However this makes Microsoft the powerful company in gaming now, there is no way else too look at it at this point.

@decadentdescent: Call of Duty being the one that makes guaranteed $$$ regardless of people complaining about each new iteration.

WUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTTTTTT....OMG, OMG.....this is what you get when you taunt the beast for long and hold back Spidy. I am just besides myself now & cannot even believe this, had to check is it April 1st yet?

Amazing, XB is the place to be now.....glad I bought a PS for only a few exclusives & it makes me feel that I have won by having my library on XB, after feeling left out in the dark for a while.
