Microsoft Buys Activision Blizzard In Deal Valued At Nearly $70 Billion, Bobby Kotick Staying On As CEO

The Xbox company has acquired Activision Blizzard in the company's largest acquisition in its history.

Following reports, Microsoft has now officially announced it has acquired Activision Blizzard in a deal valued at nearly $70 billion. This is Microsoft's biggest acquisition in history of any type, and it is the biggest gaming acquisition in history by a huge margin.

"Over many decades, the studios and teams that make up Activision Blizzard have earned vast wellsprings of joy and respect from billions of people all over the world," Xbox boss Phil Spencer said. "We are incredibly excited to have the chance to work with the amazing, talented, dedicated people across Activision Publishing, Blizzard Entertainment, Beenox, Demonware, Digital Legends, High Moon Studios, Infinity Ward, King, Major League Gaming, Radical Entertainment, Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games, Toys for Bob, Treyarch, and every team across Activision Blizzard."

Now Playing: Xbox Buys Activision Blizzard For Tons Of Money, Bobby Kotick To Leave in 2023 | GameSpot News

Until the deal closes, which is projected to happen during Microsoft's FY2023 (July 2022-June 2023), Microsoft and Activision Blizzard will operate independently, Microsoft said. If and when it does go through, the Activision Blizzard team will report to Spencer as the CEO of Microsoft Gaming.

Spencer said Microsoft will add "as many Activision Blizzard games as we can" to Xbox Game Pass for PC and console, including new games and catalog titles.

Spencer went on to say that buying Activision Blizzard will help "accelerate our plans" for cloud gaming. "Activision Blizzard games are enjoyed on a variety of platforms and we plan to continue to support those communities moving forward," he said.

Activision Blizzard has made headlines of late regarding its many controversies and lawsuits involving its corporate culture and leadership under CEO Bobby Kotick. Spencer said Microsoft is "committed to our journey for inclusion in every aspect of gaming, among both employees and players."

He added: "We deeply value individual studio cultures. We also believe that creative success and autonomy go hand-in-hand with treating every person with dignity and respect. We hold all teams, and all leaders, to this commitment. We're looking forward to extending our culture of proactive inclusion to the great teams across Activision Blizzard."

In its own statement, Activision Blizzard confirmed that Microsoft will pay $95 per share to acquire Activision Blizzard, for a total payout of $68.7 billion if the deal goes through. In buying Activision Blizzard, Microsoft will also take ownership of massive franchises like Call of Duty, Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch, as well as Activision Blizzard's eSports endeavors. Activision Blizzard's numerous studios and almost 10,000 employees will also become part of Xbox going forward, it would appear. Microsoft will have 30+ internal game development studios following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

As part of the buyout, Microsoft shared an image of the "Gaming Leadership Team," with Phil Spencer at the top as CEO of Microsoft Gaming. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, who has been in the middle of ongoing lawsuits regarding sexual harassment and discrimination, will remain CEO of Activision Blizzard. Whether or not Kotick is staying on at Activision Blizzard after the deal closes remains to be seen. It's been reported that Kotick will leave Activision Blizzard if/when the deal is finalized.

"Bobby Kotick will continue to serve as CEO of Activision Blizzard, and he and his team will maintain their focus on driving efforts to further strengthen the company's culture and accelerate business growth," Activision said.

"Gaming is the most dynamic and exciting category in entertainment across all platforms today and will play a key role in the development of metaverse platforms," Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said. "We're investing deeply in world-class content, community and the cloud to usher in a new era of gaming that puts players and creators first and makes gaming safe, inclusive and accessible to all."

Kotick said in a statement: "For more than 30 years our incredibly talented teams have created some of the most successful games,. The combination ofActivision Blizzard'sworld-class talent and extraordinary franchises withMicrosoft's technology, distribution, access to talent, ambitious vision and shared commitment to gaming and inclusion will help ensure our continued success in an increasingly competitive industry."

Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard is subject to the standard closing conditions and a regulatory review, as well as approval from Activision Blizzard's shareholders. The deal has already been approved by the boards of directors at Microsoft and Activision Blizzard. If all goes to plan, the deal is expected to close in fiscal year 2023 (July 2022-June 2023).

This is just the latest massive acquisition from Microsoft, following its buyout of ZeniMax/Bethesda.

Xbox Statement On Activision Buyout

"As a team, we are on a mission to extend the joy and community of gaming to everyone on the planet. We all know that gaming is the most vibrant and dynamic form of entertainment worldwide and we’ve experienced the power of social connection and friendship that gaming makes possible.

As we pursue that mission, it is incredibly exciting to announce that Microsoft has agreed to acquire Activision Blizzard.

Over many decades, the studios and teams that make up Activision Blizzard have earned vast wellsprings of joy and respect from billions of people all over the world. We are incredibly excited to have the chance to work with the amazing, talented, dedicated people across Activision Publishing, Blizzard Entertainment, Beenox, Demonware, Digital Legends, High Moon Studios, Infinity Ward, King, Major League Gaming, Radical Entertainment, Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games, Toys for Bob, Treyarch and every team across Activision Blizzard.

Until this transaction closes, Activision Blizzard and Microsoft Gaming will continue to operate independently. Once the deal is complete, the Activision Blizzard business will report to me as CEO, Microsoft Gaming.

Upon close, we will offer as many Activision Blizzard games as we can within Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass, both new titles and games from Activision Blizzard’s incredible catalog. We also announced today that Game Pass now has more than 25 million subscribers. As always, we look forward to continuing to add more value and more great games to Game Pass.

The fantastic franchises across Activision Blizzard will also accelerate our plans for Cloud Gaming, allowing more people in more places around the world to participate in the Xbox community using phones, tablets, laptops and other devices you already own. Activision Blizzard games are enjoyed on a variety of platforms and we plan to continue to support those communities moving forward.

As a company, Microsoft is committed to our journey for inclusion in every aspect of gaming, among both employees and players. We deeply value individual studio cultures. We also believe that creative success and autonomy go hand-in-hand with treating every person with dignity and respect. We hold all teams, and all leaders, to this commitment. We’re looking forward to extending our culture of proactive inclusion to the great teams across Activision Blizzard.

Around the world, there is no more exciting venue for fun and connection than video games. And there has never been a better time to play than right now. As we extend the joy and community of gaming to everyone, we look forward to welcoming all of our friends at Activision Blizzard to Microsoft Gaming."

I feel sorry for PlayStation, I really do. They poked a giant and got smacked in the freaking face man. Xbox has no games huh, I want you to think about that for second. Xbox has no games.... Xbox has no damn games. Well Sony knows has no games, do you like the sound of that because In minute this will be true. I mean come on dudes, No more COD's on Sony consoles, No more Diablo on Sony's consoles. Microsoft is know king of the block, King of the block. Keep Bloodborne, keep Horizon whatever and a few other's like Final Fantasy which has seen a decline in players too. Microsoft freaking King of the block and It will only get worst as time goes on, Game pass wins.

@ceelogreen94: Well, while you are correct that Game Pass wins. Sony still has some great games, they will be fine. I am hoping for a similar Sony Game Pass. Both are making great games, and thats really what people should want.

Will Xbox likely take over the majority of the console market share compared to Sony, yes I think that is likely, but thats not iminent by any strech. Might not even be this generation, and it all depends on what happens next.

@ceelogreen94: they will both be fine. Win? Win what? Success means winning. Playstation has been king of revenue where as Xbox is playing the long game .. meaning profits are in the foreseeable future not now. But like I said they will both be fine.

@vs_shield: I've got Gamepass and I've bought the best games that I really enjoy, like Halo Infinite, FH5, and many more, but also I like to play and enjoy hundreds of games for only $15 a month. It's the best of both worlds, sorry for your argument.

@ceelogreen94: lol wishful thinking but the reality is they will be fine and XB will just be getting closer to the revenue PS makes or even more maybe. But their overhead is significantly more now so I hope they get them subs In the 300M or more to get that revenue up there and healthy.

@ceelogreen94: Last I checked, just because the rich team signed the biggest free agent doesn't mean they go on to win the championship. Heck, did you see how baseball ended this year?

Same deal here. Activision always knew how to turn nothing into billion dollar franchises. MS...not so much. So, sure, they landed the colossal deal, but will they actually be able to do anything with it? History has generally shown...no, usually not.

@Barighm: Not even Activision, it is mainly Blizzard games i am focused on, Activision bought blizzard for close to $20 billion dollars in 2008.

COD is nowhere near the powerhouse it once was in the modern warfare 2 days.

Warcraft has made $10bn in revenue by 2017, i think the main pull for Microsoft was WOW, and the PC gaming space, as opposed to the console space, there is only mainly COD and overwatch on consoles, the rest of the IP's are mainly PC.

I just want them to announce Starcraft or even WOW for us console gamers!!

@Barighm: The current Microsoft team has learned the downside to trying to create a system of heavy handed control in a creative environment. This is probably the best moment they've ever had to acquire a group of studios this large and create positive change. There's a lot of experience that can be shared and learned between these two monoliths.

It would be interesting if Microsoft took some notes from Valves free approach to arranging development teams with the volume of staff they have across all of these teams.

@ceelogreen94: You do realize that every single Xbox game can be played on the PC....but most Playstation exclusives aren't available on the PC.

I don't know about you, but I'd rather get a gaming PC and get a PS6 instead of the latest Xbox because why wouldn't I play those games on the PC if I can?

@Vaildez: I agree but MS did just flex its muscle as they do make billions per year and they spent more on this than the 8 billion. When I saw the headlines all I can do is think about all the projects. Activision did make the right move looking out the mess it was in.

@lonewolf1044: easy to spend but now they have to get that revenue up way passed PlayStations considering their overhead is much higher than PS's. I'm sure MS can hold the weight for a while but how long are they willing to do it for 🤷 hopefully it works out for them though.

@lonewolf1044: yeah considering Activision brings in about $10b and Xbox last year made $13b which is a bit higher than usual but together that still brings them just shy of what PlayStation brings in. But xbox's overhead is significantly higher than PlayStations. To be successful they have to bring that revenue up passed PlayStations significantly.... We'll see, time will tell.

@lonewolf1044: I think a lot of the IP's MS gets here are ones held dear in the hearts of many gamers. Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch, Starcraft, Call of Duty, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk, just to name the most popular. Many of these series have been left to stagnate for years, either from neglect or mismanagement. If they use them correctly, MS could help breath new life into many of them.

Exactly, Activision is the fault for ending alot of things since they took over post-Morhime's time (like he even said so himself that the deal was set in stone dunno why folks are not paying attention). No new StarCraft game, no SC2 updates (wtf maintenance mode?? so messed up man), the game aka StarCraft Ghost that was leaked online that was suppose to be next in line but Activision wanting those live services, not a proper fucking game, let's see what else, it was found out that because Crash 4 didn't "have enough MAUs (monthly active users)" Toys For Bob was forced to twitch over to Warzone ala cater to the mindless noobs playing BR titles... it sucks so much.

There hasn't been a Guitar Hero successor + new GH in ages and neither has there been at least a new Tony Hawk. Personally, I just wish THAW was on PC as a HD port. Can I get that?!!?!? Because between Underground 1/2 and THAW, THAW was hands down my most favorite of the series. Addtionally never forget, Activision also put other games into maintenance mode i.e. WarCraft 3 Reforged that bastard child that fucking killled WarCraft overall and they haven't made up for that with an do-over/rework since then.

Best part about this deal:

1. The games won't be dependent on MAU results, the devs can fucking work as they please and not be pressured with release windows. i.e. OverWatch, WoW, CoD, Crash, I can go on but...

2. No more 6 month CoD at least until 2022 one is donzo.

3. Maybe we'll get that new StarCraft?

@arishok124: ms isnt known for resurrecting franchises. they got rare and we got a shitty banjo game and a shitty perfect dark game. then pretty much nothing. they have let many of their own ips from fuzion frenzy to blinx die. even gears has been on decline. halo infinite shows their micro policy isnt spectacular combined to acti.

theyve talked about resurrecting fable and perfect dark but after about 3 years of that we stiĺl havent seen anything.

combine that with ms saying "activision studios will keep their management and independence" and i dont think anything is changing at least fast. main positive is that kotick is out and perhaps the work harassment etc scandal ends. maybe.

@ghostspartan: Well you kinda overlooked half of my comment, I said no more 6 month CoD until the one this year released. Plus you have to understand the lawsuits take time anyways so, while that will honestly take more years to get down right, in THE MEANTIME, there will be more time given to the studios once Kotic gets kicked out...

I'll be glad to see something else other than the six month CoD, I'lk still look forward to it, thanks. Also the stuff you are talking about is all on MS's end anyway, Conker/Perfect Dark as well as the revived(?) 007 Golden Fire project... all on their end to handle that. Besides they had suscess with Age of Empires IV/AoE2Defin... if they can do that, at least it can hope for a potential WarCraft 3 Reforge overhaul... then I may consider buying this game.

I own shares in both companies. This means those games will be on game pass almost certainly. As a gamer, I have both X Box Series X and PS5 and a PC with RTX 3080. I'm definitely not worried about Sony - PS5 is just too damn fun and the single player experience will always be there. But this definitely strengthens Xbox. In my mind, any serious gamers should have all the machines above. They are worth the money.

Woah. That's a big one. As a Xbox and Gamepass player this makes me happy, but quite honestly I would have much rather they spent significantly less and instead grabbed a variety of underfunded up and coming studios with a diverse lineup of mainstream and eclectic games.

I would have eventually got my preferred third party goodness anyway. Let me see some new and diverse IP's.

Still I have to leave here with a:

Daaaaammmmmnn!

@wahsobe: Those type of devs are already putting their games on game pass for the visibility anyway though. That's what makes game pass so great is you get a fair amount of big games and a whole lot of smaller indie games that you'd probably never try if they weren't offered at no additional cost.

@cunningpig: There's a difference between throwing your game on Gamepass and having the financial backing to make the game you want the way you want it the first time around. Some games may never even get completed before they run out of funds so the built in consumer base of Gamepass isn't going to help.

Best possible outcome for ATVI at this point. They need MS's execs, culture, legal team, and HR policies BADLY.

Who knows? Maybe I'll play a CoD game again someday, once they're included with GP.

The video game industry is for sale, and MS is buying. Most concerning is that comment about Metaverse plans….ugh, just let people play games.

People thought cool guy Spencer was the Luke Skywalker of games, turns out it was just Palpatine the entire time, and we fell for it. So much for growing gaming and breaking down platform barriers, huh.

This gen, and maybe everyone after it, have become a true David vs. Goliath scenario for Sony, a complete reversal of the narrative for the past 2 gens. MS has spent enough money on buying devs that they could have bought Sony. Now, we see how long they can hold on before the Chinese mega publishers move in and absorb the scraps. Dang shame too, Sony has published many of the best games ever made in the past decade or so. MS didn’t publish any of them.

I bet Sony will hang on to the bitter end, and will cancel all their PC ports from here on out. Spencer’s dream comes true, and fewer of us get to play great games on the platforms we want, and will probably end up paying more for them. Monopolization only leads to worse products and higher prices.

i'm just worried about the developers (infinity ward, 3arc and etc,) more than the publisher (activision).

Well, Sony just needs to get out of its current comfort zone. It's like Microsoft tickling Godzilla's butt. Unfortunately, the size of the feather is crucial.
