The Xbox company has acquired Activision Blizzard in the company's largest acquisition in its history.

Following reports, Microsoft has now officially announced it has acquired Activision Blizzard in a deal valued at nearly $70 billion. This is Microsoft's biggest acquisition in history of any type, and it is the biggest gaming acquisition in history by a huge margin.

"Over many decades, the studios and teams that make up Activision Blizzard have earned vast wellsprings of joy and respect from billions of people all over the world," Xbox boss Phil Spencer said. "We are incredibly excited to have the chance to work with the amazing, talented, dedicated people across Activision Publishing, Blizzard Entertainment, Beenox, Demonware, Digital Legends, High Moon Studios, Infinity Ward, King, Major League Gaming, Radical Entertainment, Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games, Toys for Bob, Treyarch, and every team across Activision Blizzard."

Now Playing: Xbox Buys Activision Blizzard For Tons Of Money, Bobby Kotick To Leave in 2023 | GameSpot News

Until the deal closes, which is projected to happen during Microsoft's FY2023 (July 2022-June 2023), Microsoft and Activision Blizzard will operate independently, Microsoft said. If and when it does go through, the Activision Blizzard team will report to Spencer as the CEO of Microsoft Gaming.

Spencer said Microsoft will add "as many Activision Blizzard games as we can" to Xbox Game Pass for PC and console, including new games and catalog titles.

Spencer went on to say that buying Activision Blizzard will help "accelerate our plans" for cloud gaming. "Activision Blizzard games are enjoyed on a variety of platforms and we plan to continue to support those communities moving forward," he said.

Activision Blizzard has made headlines of late regarding its many controversies and lawsuits involving its corporate culture and leadership under CEO Bobby Kotick. Spencer said Microsoft is "committed to our journey for inclusion in every aspect of gaming, among both employees and players."

He added: "We deeply value individual studio cultures. We also believe that creative success and autonomy go hand-in-hand with treating every person with dignity and respect. We hold all teams, and all leaders, to this commitment. We're looking forward to extending our culture of proactive inclusion to the great teams across Activision Blizzard."

In its own statement, Activision Blizzard confirmed that Microsoft will pay $95 per share to acquire Activision Blizzard, for a total payout of $68.7 billion if the deal goes through. In buying Activision Blizzard, Microsoft will also take ownership of massive franchises like Call of Duty, Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch, as well as Activision Blizzard's eSports endeavors. Activision Blizzard's numerous studios and almost 10,000 employees will also become part of Xbox going forward, it would appear. Microsoft will have 30+ internal game development studios following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

As part of the buyout, Microsoft shared an image of the "Gaming Leadership Team," with Phil Spencer at the top as CEO of Microsoft Gaming. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, who has been in the middle of ongoing lawsuits regarding sexual harassment and discrimination, will remain CEO of Activision Blizzard. Whether or not Kotick is staying on at Activision Blizzard after the deal closes remains to be seen. It's been reported that Kotick will leave Activision Blizzard if/when the deal is finalized.

"Bobby Kotick will continue to serve as CEO of Activision Blizzard, and he and his team will maintain their focus on driving efforts to further strengthen the company's culture and accelerate business growth," Activision said.

"Gaming is the most dynamic and exciting category in entertainment across all platforms today and will play a key role in the development of metaverse platforms," Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said. "We're investing deeply in world-class content, community and the cloud to usher in a new era of gaming that puts players and creators first and makes gaming safe, inclusive and accessible to all."

Kotick said in a statement: "For more than 30 years our incredibly talented teams have created some of the most successful games,. The combination ofActivision Blizzard'sworld-class talent and extraordinary franchises withMicrosoft's technology, distribution, access to talent, ambitious vision and shared commitment to gaming and inclusion will help ensure our continued success in an increasingly competitive industry."

Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard is subject to the standard closing conditions and a regulatory review, as well as approval from Activision Blizzard's shareholders. The deal has already been approved by the boards of directors at Microsoft and Activision Blizzard. If all goes to plan, the deal is expected to close in fiscal year 2023 (July 2022-June 2023).

This is just the latest massive acquisition from Microsoft, following its buyout of ZeniMax/Bethesda.

As we pursue that mission, it is incredibly exciting to announce that Microsoft has agreed to acquire Activision Blizzard.

Over many decades, the studios and teams that make up Activision Blizzard have earned vast wellsprings of joy and respect from billions of people all over the world. Until this transaction closes, Activision Blizzard and Microsoft Gaming will continue to operate independently. Once the deal is complete, the Activision Blizzard business will report to me as CEO, Microsoft Gaming.

I'm a PC Gamer, BUT I must say that after using both consoles since Christmas I have to say that it's going to take even more than this move from Microsoft to get on Sony's level. Off topic a bit I know but the Xbox OS is as clunky as hell. The Playstation OS makes you feel like - okay you want to do that, go right ahead. I'm not even talking about the hardware between the two because I have a PC that handily beats them both. Sony's OS is gorgeous and seamless, Microsoft's surprisingly feels clunky and inconvenient, it's a small thing I guess.

@lonesamurai00: I dont get this at all. I have always felt Xbox UI was far better, and PS was clunky. I dont have a PS5 yet, so maybe they have changed it compared to my PS4, but Xbox UI is great, not perfect, but very good. Very easy to use.

I dont think Xbox has to do more to be on Sonys level, in fact I think Game Pass has put them in a different competition level then them. They arent competing with Sony anymore really, they are competing with Amazon and Google now.

Sony has great games there is no doubt, and Ill get a PS5 for sure, but I think Game Pass on Xbox as far as a value proposition for gaming is at another level. I think they are both awesome systems honestly, no one should be unhappy with their purchases.

@Archaicc: Oh yeah, you gotta use the PS5 OS to feel it's sheer brilliance in the console space. After going from one console to the other it makes using the Xbox OS feel like a punishment by comparison. I mean the only thing better than the Playstation 5 OS is navigating Steam and GOG Galaxy because I'm using a mouse and keyboard and not a controller to quickly navigate.

Now as said about Game Pass, sure it's great if you're a console gamer, then again so is Xbox XCloud, so is Playstation Now, and Google Stadia because none of them allows file access to your games, so they're all the same to me... useless.

I use Steam and GOG for PC, and if I want a Playstation or Xbox title I buy it off of their respective stores without the hassle of any monthly subscription services, or file access restrictions.

And third-party games forget about it. I'd much prefer playing them on the PC platform since it's better for me without the hardware limitations found on consoles. Now if using Game Pass meant that I could somehow link that game library to Steam as a Game Pass subscriber, then it would be just amazing. Yes I know that nuts since they are two completely different companies, but hey a guy can dream.

I am quite surprised by how much I like using the Playstation 5. I didn't expect to find it so enjoyable, then again I haven't had a Playstation console since the PS3. I mean as an ardent PC Gamer it's unfortunate that the PC platform didn't get as many games back in those days so I had to have console as well. Now today there's rarely anything that the PC platform doesn't get.

@lonesamurai00: Im not sure what file restrictions you a referring to. Game Pass allows you to install the game on your PC/Xbox Console. Its not all cloud. Have you tried Game Pass? Id suggest you give it a trial.

OS could just be a preference thing, ill withold my judgement until I eventually get a PS5.

@Archaicc: Okay here is an article from the Verge describing exactly what I am talking about, and since this article was just published last November I'm sure that I can safely assume that it hasn't happened yet, and won't for some time. This is what I mean when I say that Microsoft makes PC Gaming feel like crappy console gaming. Why would any PC Gamer want this? You may as well stay on an Xbox console for pete's sake.

This is no file access, these are the file restrictions that currently reside when using Game Pass for the PC.

The Verge - "Microsoft’s Windows store is finally becoming more Steam-like for games" "The Xbox app will soon let you install PC games freely."

@lonesamurai00: Yaaah no. I'm not 100% satisfied with either OS but the Xbox's OS is not only better but it gets iterated upon far quicker. If you're having trouble navigating around the Xboxes OS then you are likely just less experienced with it.

Now what would make me happy is allowing us to create our own UI. The deeper the customization the better. I am seldom super happy with the UX of any UI.

@wahsobe: It's not about using the OS in the correct way. I'm saying that after using both fro about two weeks the Playstation OS is just amazing by comparison.

The internet in my area went out for a couple of hours, which is rare. I was going to play an Xbox game during the outage, but I was greeted with a prompt that told me to make the console my "home console" when I got back online, so I could not play anything on it. I turn on the Playstation to play a little Until Dawn (what a great game by the way) and no problems at all. It did say something went wrong, but it allowed me to play with no issues at all.

Another thing that got under my skin was that when I tried to move some screenshots from the console to a thumb drive on the Xbox, it said that formatting the drive to NTFS is a requirement, but I have things on the drive and I wasn't going to format it when I have things on it just for some screenshots so I just deleted them from the console. I did the same thing, using the same thumb drive on the Playstation and again, no problem moving the screenshots at all. The Playstation just seems less cumbersome. These are personal observations of mine of course, but the Playstation OS just seems so much more enjoyable to use. I can only describe the Xbox OS as sort of clunky by comparison.

@lonesamurai00: What you're talking about in both these instances are security related. As the developer of the most popular OS on the planet and so most widely hacked OS they may be a bit touchy on how they want things done.

I set my machine to home a long time ago and I often use it to play co-op games with friends that don't own them. I just get them to log into my console and I log into theirs which allows me to play the game I own while away from my console and they get to play the game I own that is attached to my home machine. Two people playing with only one owned copy :) Of course this only works with digitally owned games.

So pluses and minuses.

@wahsobe: It's a pain in the butt for someone who overlooked such a setting. Not being able to play games offline because you didn't address that setting is a pure inconvenience.

Playstation gave me no issue at all with being offline. This why I prefer to use the PC to play Xbox games on Steam rather than fool around with an Xbox console, but my wife put it under the tree without asking if I actually wanted such a Christmas gift.

God love her....

@wahsobe: Nah, I shouldn't have to look at videos, plus I don't like doing that anyway. I felt right at home on the Playstation 5, and I didn't expect to, but I love the console. I expected to like the Xbox console better because I have been such a big supporter of Windows for decades.

Although the upcoming Steam Deck has me interested in PC Gaming on Linux now, so I hope that it is a massive success as Microsoft has been dropping the ball with Windows as of late.

This not me saying that the Xbox OS is in anyway bad, it just ain't as sweet as the PS5 OS.

@lonesamurai00: A minor security bump means less to me than the ability to play on two machines with one copy of a game and also the Xbox seems to be notable more app friendly so I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I will say the PS5 UI is slick though, I just want more.

@wahsobe: Sure playing one game on two machines is a great novelty, but you're not playing on Steam or GOG Galaxy. You're forced to use the Xbox app, which utilizes Microsoft's UWP. and that just makes playing games on the PC feel like playing games on an Xbox.

Everything that makes PC Gaming the coolest is stripped away when using the Xbox App.

Microsoft can keep that crap. I'm a PC Gamer, but Microsoft's meaning of the letters "PC" seems to mean Personal Console, not Personal Computer.

@lonesamurai00: Actually I think you have mistaken me. I'm talking about logging into two different Xboxes to play the same digital copy. I haven't tried the same method on PC but I wouldn't be surprised if cross platform titles allowed the same thing.

Still I'm wondering why you would even compare the Xbox to a PC and yet only compare the PlayStation to an Xbox. For one thing you couldn't compare what the PS offers on PC to what the Xbox offers PC. There's no contest there.

Though limited to a handful of titles Microsoft is allowing developers to add modding. Whether they do or not really isn't up to Microsoft, and it will never be the same as PC because we have direct access to the files and folders. Even if devs try to stop it there's usually only so much they can do.

I would like to remind you this discussion was about comparing consoles OS's not Consoles to PC.

@wahsobe: Nevermind, I thought that you were talking about Microsoft's Play Anywhere when you spoke of playing on two machines (PC) and (Xbox), but you're talking about two Xbox machines. Well that means little to me because I don't own, or want two Xboxes, or two Playstations for that matter. All that I'm saying is that the PS5 has been a joy to use, Xbox however is just okay.

Forget the PC stuff that I accidentally brought up. PC is on another level, and Microsoft is barely a blip on the radar anyway.

Please disregard all of my PC comments in the last post.

@lonesamurai00: I wouldn't go as far as that about Xbox on PC but as things are now it does occupy a different space than something like Steam on PC.

I understand that you may not have a use for the features I've mentioned but that's what I'm talking about. Each machine has pluses and minuses and I just find that Microsoft seems to be taking a more creative and proactive approach than Sony. I'm always super unimpressed with the majority of the updates to my PS systems whereas Microsoft have addressed many concerns and made improvements with a steady cadence.

I'm happy that with it's latest console Sony has finally made a bunch of changes to the OS, I just wish more of that found it's way backwards and that they were more aggressive at making worthwhile changes going forwards.

PS. I don't use two Xboxes I just have friends that bring theirs over. I did own two Xbox Ones mostly because I upgraded mine and also swapped for the One S because EB Games came out with some stupid deal that basically gave me a free upgrade plus a game I wanted, but I figured this time around my friends can bring their own damn machines and I'll just pay for a better secondary TV to support it.

@dancol1986: look at what you're typing. You actually think that buying companies instead of improving from within the company is better? The Playstation brand became what it is today by building from within, not just buying companies.

On a personal gripe, I think that Microsoft is lame. Sony threw everything into their latest title on the PC (God of War) for the PC, I mean we don't see enough games that have these graphics options on the PC, THEN it has support for DLSS. Microsoft hasn't made one game on the PC that offers the use of DLSS.

I don't own God of War but I have seen the options that it offers on the PC and they are impressive.

@lonesamurai00:This is not factual at all. You think Sony built all the studios from scratch? Fans of Sony completing ignore facts that Sony bought most of their studios as well.

All these studios were bought by Sony - Insomniac, Bluepoint, Naughty Dog, Bend, Sucker Punch, Guerilla Games, Housemarque, Valkyrie Entertainment, etc.

@Archaicc: When studios release their work on one console platform (Playstation) in their whole existence for the most part as a developer it makes perfect sense for them to become part of that company, as with Playground games and Microsoft, but both Bethesda and Activision Blizzard were pure third-party companies, and it's obvious that Microsoft bought them to make themselves a bigger player in the business, but it's quite pathetic really.

Rare, Bethesda, and Activision were all third-party companies, and developers before Microsoft pulled the trigger on buying them. Personally it doesn't matter a whole lot to me in the end because as I don't really buy games from either company. Actually I did buy Spyro on Steam last year, but that was for a price that I just couldn't ignore.

@lonesamurai00: They were publishing for just Sony likely because they paid them to do so. Either way, thats kind of a ridiclous argument. The comment said that Sony had grown their games on their own, compared to MS buying all their studios.

Its a false statement. Sony has bought the majority of their studios. Insominiac published Sunset Overdrive on Xbox, im sure no Sony fans were complaining that they bought a company that was multiplat and went exclusive to Sony.

Its just stating false facts to support your argument.

@Archaicc: I certainly don't want to present any false facts to anyone. In the past I never stuck my nose in these matters concerning the two console companies, so perhaps I am not the least bit qualified in this topic being a 99.9% PC Gamer.

It is a big blow for both Sony and Nintendo though, and it just seems scummy to me.

@lonesamurai00: I guess we have different views of the world of business. The company is trying to make money, and increasing their Game Pass portfolio. Nothing wrong with that.

No one came here complaining when Sony did the exact same thing, albeit on smaller scales. No one complained about Sony exclusive content. I dont personally love exclusives, but thats the current industry.

@Archaicc: You may be right after all. I do remember a Sony developer saying that they hated making games for one console, and one set of gamers. I don't care personally for myself either way because I have the best of both worlds on the PC.

I also remember how bummed people who primarily use Xbox must have been when they found out that Street Fighter V wasn't coming to the console. What's good for the goose I guess.

@lonesamurai00: Game Pass doesnt stop you from owning a game. In fact, you get discounts for purchases of games that are on Game Pass if you have a subscription.

Also, it allows you to play games that you would have never spent full price on. For example, I am interested in playing Deaths Door/Hades, GOTY contenders, and didnt feel like buying them, and never would have if they were not on Game Pass. Now I can play them without buying them.

There are tons of scenarios like that. I like games, this gets me more games....pretty easy decision.

@Archaicc: I certainly hear a lot about the Game Pass service on just about every gaming site in the industry, but for me I need the x86 that you get from of both Steam and GOG, plus the pure joy of DRM free gaming.

Game Pass is probably great for console gamers, but if Microsoft still uses UWP for Game Pass games on the PC, then that is a big no no for me. I have heard that the Xbox app itself is fairly restrictive when it comes to its game files, because of the heavily laden DRM measures the service employs, so tweaking any launch settings for games can be difficult, and it may be necessary to fix bugs or performance issues in some games.

I need file access to my games, never mind not being able to use modding in games.

In my experience playing PC Games from the Windows store feels gaming on an Xbox console and that takes the fun of being a PC Gamer vs. using an actual Xbox.

Please tell me if I am wrong about the service, but from what I have heard I don't think that I am. I'll take your silence on this to mean that they do use UWP files for games.

My friends use it fairly regularly and have no complaints at all. Its actually nice for cross play for Halo Infinite for example to be on the same ecosystem and be able to be in party chat (console/PC). Id imagine there are benefits, and downfalls, but the gaming value is unbelievable.

I hope there is a similar system in place for PS when they eventually have a Game Pass like service.

@dancol1986: MS is still about $5B/y in sales behind Sony with this acquisition, they leapfrogged Nintendo and Tencent, but it'll take a couple more studios to catch Sony.

@lord2fli: if COD and other titles go exclusive, it does take revenue away from playstation but Sony also has other plans that make some AAA multiplayer games and should expect even more revenue from their acquired studios. I sense Sony will make a significant acquisition soon but nothing close to the amount of $70b lol.

@Barighm: This is all about preference. MS has a ton of quality, to say otherwise is simply fanboyism.

Both have quality games.

@Barighm: I don't really think you can argue that anymore. Sony has great stuff but better is more about personal opinion.

@wahsobe: Turning your flag ship title into a F2P game with MTs sucks. That's not my opinion. That's just truth.

@Barighm: You have something against free?

I see no problem with offering users the ability to pay for custom costumes and art. My only real gripe is their new paint system. It's horribly thought out and IS a crappy cash grab in it's worst scenarios. Then again if spending a few bucks for your favorite color scheme instead of over $20 for that piece of the game is your big gripe you should probably rethink things. Anyway I'm sure that minor issue will eventually get sorted through user complaints which is often the case with Microsoft.

@Barighm: Its really not that big a deal. The game is amazing.

There is also the campaign which is awesome. If you look at most Sony first party games, campaign is all you really get.

@pcps4xb: like?

HZD? GOW? TLOU? spiderman?

I think you and I have different definitions of multiplayer. For the most part I'm referring to competitive modes. Coop I don't really consider MP, unless that's the base game mode.

I could see the argument for it obviously.

"Hello? Is this the Federal Trade Commission? I'd like to report something kinda sus...."

Lol. All good. As a PC gamer, as long as MicroShaft releases titles on both PC and Xbox, I'm happy.

@freddy_diggler: Truthfully I'm a little concerned about this. Not so much that Microsoft holds the all those deeds more that the FTC is gonna get a bug up their butt about it.

I've been saying it for years... If MS wanted to, they can throw crazy money and just buy all the "First Party" titles.

Let's go MS!
