Next Xbox in 2012, PS4 dev ramping up - Report

Edge sources say Ubisoft and EA have hands on target hardware for Microsoft's next console with a late 2012 launch in mind, Sony has shifted one studio's focus to the next generation.

It appears next-generation console rumors are coming to a consensus. Edge today reported that Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, and other unspecified major developers are developing games for the successor to the Xbox 360 with a late 2012 launch expected.

One year left as Microsoft's top dog?
One year left as Microsoft's top dog?

According to the site, Ubisoft Montreal and "certain EA studios" are working on games with Microsoft-provided "target boxes" that use off-the-shelf computer parts matching the planned specifications for the company's next console. The first legitimate devkits for the system are expected to be provided to developers by the end of this year. The given late-2012 release window lines up with rumors from last week that pegged the next Xbox as launching in the holiday season next year.

Edge also provided a corroborating take for another next-generation rumor that had been floating around, this one about Sony's next PlayStation. Last month, rumors circulated that Sony had begun work on PlayStation 4 games--a notion backed up by Edge's report that "one major Sony-owned studio has now ceased PlayStation 3 development" to work on the next console from the electronics giant.

The Major Sony owned studio has to be Naughty dog, I think they are the main studio behind Sony's Ice team. In terms of new consoles I'll wait a year from release depending on games and console price

It makes sense for the next Xbox at least when you consider Halo 4 is supposed to come out next holiday season. What better way to launch a new console with the beginning of the next trilogy in the Halo franchise? My own personal opinion is that the next console will hardly be worth it if they aren't going to go with at least Directx 11 and a version of one of the top of the line pc graphics cards on the market today - the 360 launched with a 512mb graphic card that wasn't even top of the line at the time it launched. In any event, I hope that the next version of consoles can give the type of quality that I see ultra settings for pc games such as Crysis, Skyrim, and Battlefield 3 while also giving us more than 24-32 player options for online play. It's time that console gamers got to experience shooters with 64+ players as the norm, the same as pc players get to.

Please no more proprietary hard drives that cost a billion dollars per Gig and have only one SKU at launch that includes enough storage space to last for at least a couple of years! Also associate all the game licences to one's Gamer tag/account and not to a specific console. That way when you upgrade the storage/HD or replace a broken console you can pick up where you left off and not have to restart from scratch.

@otanikun only Sony claims to have a ten year life cycle, and for the most part they have stuck to their guns. Even when a new system is released there are still plenty of games that come out for for the late console. Not trying to start a flame war here, just if you literally look at the history of consoles the original Xbox was only out for like four years maybe five till the 360 was released, and games stopped being made for it almost immediately.

Well don't worry, Sony has supported their consoles for a lot of years, even after they release a new console, they did that with the PS1, PS2 (for a LOT of years), and they'll do it for the PS3 and PSP. so even if the PS4 is released, PS3 owners will still have some more years to enjoy new games :)

Each gen the games look and play better and better but I hope they can be upgradable like PCs. Would shut up a lot of PC gamers if consoles can compete every year.

Wow, way too soon , oh well, I'm getting a PS3 next week. More than likely I'll be getting the next gen Playstation/xbox probably in 2013 or 2014. Edit: I'll give my parents my ps3 as a blu-ray player by that time looool.

Just because they're developing games for the new consoles doesn't mean they'll be released in 2012, that would be a huge mistake. The current generation of consoles are only 5 and 6 years old into their 10 year life span for consoles, to release a new system at only 6 and 7 years old next year wouldn't do anybody any good whatsoever. I can see a 2012 E3 unveiling perhaps, but a new console won't be released from either company until at least 2013/2014 at the earliest and latest.

Oh and im sure next consoles will support dx11 well xbox any way as im sure sony users different render, dx11 if people can get it on pc looks well speechless. Plus when consoles do come out they'l retail for 900/1100/1250 guessing while pc parts and pc in general would be cheaper then anything wow wow well not really wow.

Alright... so the next-gen consoles will "use off-the-shelf computer parts" what are already available? That's going to be a huge step forward for sure!

I think they should wait on consoles til 2013 2014. We would have alot better tech and there's so many great games coming outin 2012. So Sony and Microsoft wait at least another year!!!!!!!

Am I the only one who thinks the new Xbox and the new PS will come with features like Kinect and PS Move? A new generation shouldn't be just a graphics update, it should have gameplay improvements, and those are the ones Microsoft and Sony are developing, so why wouldn't they put them in the next gen?

It's a little disappointing to hear that the next generation of consoles are coming soon. I still feel like there's a lot of life left, especially in the PS3. New systems means I'm going to have to spend more money.

I would rather have them both launch in 2013. By the looks of it MS and Nintedno will launch 2012 and Sony will launch 2013. I probably won't buy any of them until 2014 though

@Loving_Jane They wouldn't need any money if a cataclysm of any kind happens, survivors would use bottlecaps as currency :D @mike300zxt Don't forget how graphics aren't everything,Next Gen would mean a big upgrade to gameplay possibilities too, current consoles are also very limited in that aspect lately.Graphics should always use only to serve gameplay,a game with bad gameplay mechanics is doomed,no matter the graphics...

Nah it will be same, same architecture just imporvement on gpu and cpu and ram. the engines will still run on games today just need be tweeked so infact developers will not require a engine overhaul update but will push the limits that they soo eagerly waited for.

hmm i think its time to move on the 360 came in 2005 the ps3 in late 2006 by now pcs of that time are so out dated in terms of hardware and software leve alone a console thats cant be upgraded im not saying i hate consoles i love my ps3 and my brothers 360 but its time to move on to give game devs some more fire power with the new consoles hardware hope every thing goes well.

@Mamba219 I know, but one can still hope, right? Corporate crap will most likely get only worse, way too many gamers are bowing down way too easy and accepting every rip-off tactic these greedy corportations throw at them, without thinking about it :(

some developers are barely tapping into the true potential of the hardware we're currently using. This will only reset the progression of fully utilizing technology at our fingertips, plus THEY JUST dropped all these amazing titles in the past few weeks, I'll be living on these for at least another 2 years.

They keep teasing me a lot lately with these new Xbox in 2012 news.I really hope its true,as a PC gamer want to see an end to this horrible stagnation in gaming caused by limitations of console hardware. My hopes for the next gen would be the removal of all corporate crap killing gaming, like DLC outrage,Online Passes, sequelitis, etc.I would also want to see greedy corporations like EA that make more ways to rip ppl off with every year burned to the ground! And one more thing,I would want to see consoles that won't get outdated by rapidly advancing PC hardware too fast, like it happened now.At this point,PCs that can easily outperform consoles are very cheap if you know how to build them(or if you consult with someone experienced,of course)...
