Nintendo Exec on NES Classic Shortages, Nintendo Switch Supply

Reggie Fils-Aime weighs in.

226 Comments

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has responded to the NES Classic shortages and discussed the company's plans for the Switch launch in March as it relates to supply.

No Caption Provided

Discussing the NES Classic shortages (the system remains sold out basically everywhere following its November 2016 launch), Fils-Aime said it was simple matter of demand outpacing supply. But why?

"When we looked at that proposition what we believed was the adults, 30-40 years old, who grew up playing NES as a kid, 10 years old or so but had stepped away from the gaming category--that was going to be the buyer [of the NES Classic]," Fils-Aime said.

"As we thought about that, that led us to a certain level of supply."

The reality, however, was that the lapsed gamer and the "more active gamer" bought the NES Classic, leading to a demand that Nintendo didn't fully anticipate and in turn the supply issues.

"That was the maketplace disconnect that happened," Fils-Aime said. He added that Nintendo continues to make more NES Classic systems available. He said the supply issues for NES Classic have been "largely addressed," though not everyone may agree, considering the console continues to be sold out basically everywhere.

We also talked to Fils-Aime about the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo's supply plans. He reiterated that Nintendo has said it will have 2 million units in the wild, worldwide, for launch in March. The executive told GameSpot that this is a "huge amount" of volume, especially considering the Switch is not launching in a holiday month.

"We're working to make sure that the supply chain [for Switch] is robust and there is a steady flow of hardware," he said. "The one piece we can't anticipate is the demand side of the equation but certainly from a supply, we feel like we're going to be well-positioned."

Also in our interview, Fils-Aime provided a glimmer of hope about Mother 3. Maybe.

Check back soon for GameSpot's full interview with Fils-Aime.

@deathwish026: The NES Classic or literally the NES decades ago before console pre-orders were a thing? I (and countless others) tried to pre-order a NES Classic the day it was announced but had no luck.

@drumjod: we got maybe 20 pre orders in the 3 months before release. we took down the pre order 2 weeks before and then suddenly everyone wanted one. i dont know why people suddenly decided to want one because we had been advertisin that and the mega drive for months.

same with the ds. 3 weeks before crimbo we sold out of every 3ds we had and then people were complaining that we dont have them. down to nintendos stock management not us. it is what you get tho for leaving something so inportant so late.

@uncle5555: THIS JUST IN, Supplies are still limited on the New 3DS and the NES Classic Edition. Scalpers are still jacking the prices way above MSRP on many retailer sites still, even after the holiday season. Talks about the Nintendo Switch having a short supply are also flooding in. Can Nintendo keep up with peoples demands even after showing no signs of improvement over the 2016 holiday? More at 11. Back to you @uncle5555

Considering the Switch is practically sold out everywhere unless they open up pre-orders again the 2 million will be gone in no time. I'm sure a lot of the pre orders are from scalpers also looking to make a quick buck. As for the NES Classic anyone with common sense knows it would of sold like crazy during the holidays. I'm 25 and I got one, my other friend which is 23 couldn't find one so I got my hands on a second one and sold it to her for the same price I paid.

@Masterchief5525: Always count on the scalpers. Nintendo is particularly targeted by them. The Wii U, Amiibos, the NES Classic Edition... it's guaranteed that they'll be coming out of the woodwork to scalp the Switch especially if it's launching with a fucking Zelda game on the shelves. That's prime material to prey upon the weak. You think the imbecile man-children that actually give them money are going to hold out while the next big Zelda game is just sitting there waiting to be played? I don't think so.

He is so full of shit even 10 dumpsters wouldn't be enough. Supply and demand. LOL. Even an ordinary marketing professional could gauge the demand from the reaction with 24 hours of when it was announced. They just incompetent.

He needs to put up with all the shit from the parent company. And then he piles on more shit on top of that. It's a huge mountain of shit.

@nyrulez: Now that is more like it. The parent company is the one behind it all. Reggie isn't bull shitting. The people at Nintendo Japan don't use Social media for the most part, and probably read nothing on the momentum the NES classic had going into release to up production. Reggie is very good at what he does. He loves Nintendo and probably has more sleepless nights at bad decisions made than any lot here.

@cagedisciple: Reggie is usually full of hot air... but this is one of the rare moments where what he says actually makes a lot of sense... so I'm not sure why you assume it's a lie. They didn't want to overproduce something they wouldn't be able to sell, pretty simple and logical.

@whatsazerg: Didn't think it would sell? LOL

That shitty Atari throwback system sold over 1 million units and most people couldn't care less about those shitty old games.

You're telling me that Nintendo couldn't foresee the NES Classic with Super Mario Bros, Megaman 2, Tecmo Bowl, Donkey Kong, Castlevania, etc outselling that hunk of crap by at least a 5 to 1 margin?

If that's the case, then the goofs calling the shots over at Nintendo are even dumber than I thought.

Hell, at this point, I'm actively rooting for the Switch to flop and for Nintendo to drop out of the console race and go 3rd party.

@cagedisciple:

It is cost vs profit. Just because they have a shortage doesn't mean that they are doing it intentionally. Sometimes they are, but in regards to the NES classic this claim seems legitimate. Especially since many people were complaining that the system had 1) a very short cable and 2) non expandable storage for extra games

I didn't think that the system would sell as well as it did...hell it sold more than the Wii U did at its launch. How could they expect that? The same goes for Amiibo's. It is easy to look back in hindsight and say "well it was going to be a popular product" but when the new product sells 10 million units in 6 months when only 8 million people even owned a Wii U after two years...well its hard to guess that.

@doctor_mg: Whether it was intentional or not, you will never get the majority of people to believe it was not done intentionally or even intentionally because you and everybody else including me are speculating. even you said Nintendo may have done it intentionally in the past and how do expect many to believe it was not done intentionally? because you can't and you can't now. However it is best to wait for the rush to end and it may be awhile and it may not but I am in no hurry for one and can wait for a price drop even if it takes a year or two like I did with the Wii and WiiU.

@lonewolf1044: I think the same. The big problem being is a product eventually loses its appeal. In the case of a console, that's not too bad as there are discounted games and new games to purchase, though. I think we have SONY to thank for console scalping culture. Never really happened until the PS3. Nowadays, Scalpers are to blame for product shortages, not the manufacturer!!

You have a point...we will never know for certain. But it is easy to see, for me, how the Amiibo and NES Classic stock shortage could have happened.

I already pre-ordered from best buy. Did it from my couch, so I won't have to wait after the rush. It is up to preference,. Hopefully they have a good holiday price or bundle that you want.

I am not preordering because I feel the device is not worth $300.00 and as said will wait a couple of years for a price drop. However congrads on getting a preorder in. :)

Supply and demand.... you are deflecting Reggie... how about you talk about something real like there is only one game at launch, and you have no third party support. Sorry but a 6+ year old game, and FIFA don't count. The SWITCH has failed before it's even on the market. Guess what Reggie the other CEO's don't care for your sales gimmicks and that's why none of them will commit. Why should they invest millions when you can't even deliver on the hardware!

People dont buy nintendo consoles for 3rd party software. Maybe during the NES and SNES but not now. Seriously, most people already have other consoles and way of playing those third party games.

@alaskancrab: No dude. They have 3rd party support. For 18 months. Like it's been since the later years of the Gamecube (Iwata age) then it will drop off. Real question:

Why should WE invest millions when they can't even deliver on the hardware?

People are so fake.

Everyone screaming their heads off about what a piece of crap the Switch is, then screaming their heads off that preoders are limited right now.

Got mine paid off already at Gamestop and not afraid to admit that I'm always stoked for a new Nintendo system.

The internet is just toxic anymore...

@aross2004: I do not think everyone is saying the Switch is a piece of crap and even some of the folks that want a Switch are discontent at the possibility of not getting one at launch and are aware of Nintendo practices. You can say they should have preordered but you still may not be able to get one if the request for an preorder is greater than supply and now that person is at the mercy of Nintendo hoping they will release more in a timely manner. You are generalizing and lumping everybody into one pot when the problem is more one.

@whatsazerg:I'm not a hater, I have a Wii U and have just ordered Zelda BOTW for it. at the reasonable price of £40 from Tesco.

But I just can't get excited about the Switch's old weak tech, with a few admittedly innovative controller gimmicks, which I will never use and a portable gaming console I also have no interest in.

For the price they're asking for it, they could have made a true next gen console, with the equivalent gaming power to compete. Instead of trying to cover two different markets with 2 different player bases, in one unit, to bolster their own weak production capacities. They haven't done it to suit the fans, they just want them to pick up the tab for an entry that is "all or nothing", if you want to play Nintendo's first party games!

@aross2004: I take it you have a great gaming PC, PS4, or Xbox One??? So when the Switch is disappointing in one facet or the other you have something to fall back on so it doesn't sting so much?

Just saying if you're buying any Nintendo hardware at launch you are pretty much the beta tester. You'll find out one digital game will fill it's memory and the only thing worth playing on it are the two first-party games it gets per year, provided it's a in a genre of interest to you.

It's technical shortcomings and criticism will pave the way for the New Nintendo Switch in a year or two. By then the cream will have risen to the top of the library of Switch games and you can cherry pick what you want. Also by that time (two years in) the next Nintendo console will be well into development for launch in 2021 and we can do this all over again.

@Blade_Runner_07: I have PC, XBone and PS4.

Switch for me is more about portable Nintendo 1st party games and the RPG's.

I will buy physical copies of the games, not digital. But I have a 200GB Micro SD card just sitting around so I can toss that in there straight away.

@aross2004: That's why I bought a 3DS XL. I have the entire library of main series Mario and Zelda games up to the Gamecube on that thing as well as Pokemon, Mario Maker, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, etc. all in my back pocket. That's why the 3DS sold, and why the Switch is designed the way it is.

Yeah, the Switch would be a natural upgrade from that but the 3DS does it well enough for me right now, and I've invested so much on it I can't really give it up unless ALL that software transfers over. I mean, all that VC software. I don't expect DS carts to play in a Switch. lol

Nintendo is comprised of a bunch of fucking morons.

How many tens of millions of dollars have they left on the table because they prefer having the "hot commodity" over maximizing profits as well as making sure that essentially everyone can own their products?

Amiibos, the NES Classic and now the Switch.

Just ass backwards business structure.

@frank_castle: I would buy Nintendo products if I could find them and afford them but Nintendo isnt interested in what the seller is doing for the buyer. The western market is used to that and Nintnedo hasn't caught on that yet.

It's about communicating WHY the Switch is worth $300 and the games $59.99 not just because "It's Nintendo and they make quality products." Why is the Switch better than its competition? Tell me, Nintendo! Sell to me like almost literally the rest of world, Europe, Asia, and North America do. We love value.

Nintendo products need to be plentiful, and go down in price over time. They don't.

@frank_castle:

Having two million consoles worldwide for the launch of a product is a vert reasonable amount. The PS4 sold around 2 million during its launch. They are tempering their expectations for demand without lowering the available quantity by significant amounts.

Unless, of course, you think that the Nintendo Switch will outsell the PS4...2 million should be fine.

Yet I've never bought a used game for my XONE, never paid over $30 for said new games, and despite having to wait a year for that $30 (or less) sweet spot, it always happens. I haven't bought anything from Nintendo since 2009. It's not the $50+ each new gAme costs or the annoying fact that games steadily go UP in price, it's that there is no financial give from the sellers side. Maybe I'm spoiled by Sony and M$ but if I had the money for only one console this generation, it wouldn't be a Nintendo console. They obviously don't understand or care about their western market or the value of games. The NES Classic Mini is a steal in the eyes of most red-blooded Americans. Everyone wanted one, and no amount of feedback has Nintendo any closer to restocking the shelves with them, or meeting demand on the Switch.

@Blade_Runner_07:

It does sound like you are spoiled, no offense.

Game production costs a lot. The fact that you refuse to purchase a game until it is 30$ is part of the reason why many studios are shutting down. By taking inflation into account (not even the higher cost of production either), games would cost almost 135$...but 60$ is too much for you?

This is why a game has to sell millions to be considered a success, why Microsoft and Sony have closed 10 studios in the last 10 years, and why we suffer from microtransactions and expensive DLC.
