Nintendo Exec on NES Classic Shortages, Nintendo Switch Supply

Reggie Fils-Aime weighs in.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has responded to the NES Classic shortages and discussed the company's plans for the Switch launch in March as it relates to supply.

No Caption Provided

Discussing the NES Classic shortages (the system remains sold out basically everywhere following its November 2016 launch), Fils-Aime said it was simple matter of demand outpacing supply. But why?

"When we looked at that proposition what we believed was the adults, 30-40 years old, who grew up playing NES as a kid, 10 years old or so but had stepped away from the gaming category--that was going to be the buyer [of the NES Classic]," Fils-Aime said.

"As we thought about that, that led us to a certain level of supply."

The reality, however, was that the lapsed gamer and the "more active gamer" bought the NES Classic, leading to a demand that Nintendo didn't fully anticipate and in turn the supply issues.

"That was the maketplace disconnect that happened," Fils-Aime said. He added that Nintendo continues to make more NES Classic systems available. He said the supply issues for NES Classic have been "largely addressed," though not everyone may agree, considering the console continues to be sold out basically everywhere.

We also talked to Fils-Aime about the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo's supply plans. He reiterated that Nintendo has said it will have 2 million units in the wild, worldwide, for launch in March. The executive told GameSpot that this is a "huge amount" of volume, especially considering the Switch is not launching in a holiday month.

"We're working to make sure that the supply chain [for Switch] is robust and there is a steady flow of hardware," he said. "The one piece we can't anticipate is the demand side of the equation but certainly from a supply, we feel like we're going to be well-positioned."

Also in our interview, Fils-Aime provided a glimmer of hope about Mother 3. Maybe.

Check back soon for GameSpot's full interview with Fils-Aime.

They'll create a fake shortage of supply on the ole Switcheroo, to try and create "hype". It's just another box that's gonna have retreaded Wii U games at launch and to infinity and beyond. ( and downgraded Skyrim etc )

32GB of storage???? That won't even hold a single AAA PS4/xbone/PC game. But Switch has little games, so no sweat. ( I know you can buy more storage. Imagine PS4/xbone/PC with 32GB at launch. They'd be DEAD ON ARRIVAL )

@wtf_666: It suddenly occurred to me tonight as I watched Zelda BOTW just HOW Ninty keep their game sizes down so small.

It seems to have taken me a really long time, but simply, although their games can look good, there is just no TEXTURE to them. Very colourful and pretty in a simplified sort of drawn way, but absolutely no real detail. You can tell a piece of wood from a piece of metal because its a blob of brown, rather than a blob of silver or grey, but that's about it.

While everyone else goes for attention to detail and improving direct X, with realistic hair styles for example, Nintendo completely ignore any sort of attention to that and are satisfied with a simple comic style turnout, or the "soap opera" smoothness you get in low production value films. That probably also explains why they appeal to and cater for the kids, who just aren't as knowledgeable or picky with how their games look?

After all this time I don't know why it took me so long to realise that I knew Link was riding a horse, only because it was horse SHAPED!

Nintendo are so far behind everyone else in production values, there's no wonder their games work without problems, even now they're still producing 90's graphics on slightly more advanced machines!

If they actually DID make this gen competitive hardware, it would show up the shortcomings of their art style badly, rather than enhance it. Which also explains why they so cleverly cover that up to stay looking relative, with all the gimmicks they insist on with every new machine. I'm amazed they have got away with it for so long and still make some money?

Look again at even the NEW HD Zelda and you will see and have to admit what I mean.

@Simba13: i don't think so, nintendo does this because they are stuck with the original wii success, they saw that motion controls and weaker hardware makes them a winner seller, the thing that nintendo doesn't realize is that the wii was a very lucky shot and they won't be able to replicate it, nintendo tried a lot of times to have a good powerful normal console but none of them were as succesful as the original wii in sales, the beginning of the gamecube and the end of the original wii era changed the company forever

@Fia1: Yes, so surely this bares out my point that Nintendo realised that they had more success with gimmicks and low power consoles, than they did with more sophisticated machines because their graphics just don't hold up to scrutiny in modern consoles.

There seems to me to be a fundamental weakness there in Nintendo's graphics ability, which they continually cover up by producing low power home machines and handhelds, with their selling points being concentrated on new gimmicks. Like with the Wii and now the Switch?

To say nothing of their very flawed promotional ability to actually produce and push their hardware. Japan has a far more important emphasis on portability, which suits Nintendo's style and boosts their market share and probably blinds them to what they actually need to produce in the western markets.

They are a big fish more comfortable in a small but lucrative for them home market, where exaggerated anime and comic book style is more wanted and requested. But they are too traditional to change style and really fit in in a world market, with its more variety in games presentation.

Which also explains why you can so quickly see the difference between Nintendo games on a Nintendo machine and third party games on the same Nintendo machine?

@wtf_666: If the Switch sells out of the 2 million at launch that would be a great problem for them to have as neither PS4 nor X1 sold two million at launch.

@wtf_666: Actually lol..... installing the digital version of Zelda takes up roughly half the Switch memory. Other half may go to games like Skyrim......

So SD cards are still a common thing for Nintendo going forward I guess.

@titang1: So, why not wait? If you have an endless backlog, wouldn't it be better to just wait for a year or so? By then the Switch will have been out, more games, software updates, bug fixes etc. Zelda looks great and everything, but being a harsh critic for 15 years then all of a sudden it's a day one buy makes no sense what so ever. If anything you should be weary by the fact they have such a limited selection of launch titles. '1-2 switch' isn't even a pack in game. $50 for a tech demo? Mario kart is an old game so is Street Fighter. You can't be serious that these are the games that you're excited about. I'm calling BS.

@Oni: As a person who hasnt bought a Nintendo console since the N64, I am actually excited to get a SWITCH. I have an Xbox1 and decided to abandon mobile phones alltogether, so a Mobile device like the SWITCH does appeal to me. Especially since half my time is spent at work or on commute. I dont think the SWITCH is for everyone.

@Oni: It's not BS, the Wii and Wii-U looked and felt childish and gimmicky, this looks more grown up, that and Breath of the Wild looks like the Zelda game I've been waiting for.

I might still be playing Zelda even then.

@titang1: Most people sticking up for Switch do have a fallback console or a PC. If you don't then boy are you in for disappointment. Literally every Nintendo console since the Wii starts to lack about 18 months in. Alot of the games they are getting in that time are the most inferior versions of those games, or are the same ole Mario/Kart/Zelda/Smash franchises with the same slightly tweaked gameplay variation we've been seeing since the mid 90s.

Just saying I can go buy an Xbox for $50 less at $250 (a price point the Switch will likely never see) then I have the next few years to look forward as I stay on the bleeding edge of releases while Nintendo waits for a "Switch version" that may never come.

Point is, only a foolish Nintendo fanboy would buy a Switch at launch, IF they can find it, and afford it.

@titang1: Well since the DS......

DSi

Wii Motion Plus

3DS XL

New 3DS

and coming early 2019...

New Nintendo Switch Plus

Yeah, the Wii U didn't have a Wii U Plus but I don't think it sold well enough to call for a revision when they could make that money with the introduction of Amiibo. The Gamecube didn't sell well enough either, but they got us to buy an Expansion Pak for the N64. Nintendo always tries to capitalize on it's success and isn't very good at learning from mistakes.

So in today's market place, it really is a little foolish to buy-in at launch when you already have these technical shortcomings that are major enough to warrant a fix, and minor enough to be practical improvements in a better version of the Switch in the future.

@koboldprime: No silly. They would do what Nintendo is doing. Take a game engine made in the 90s, and crank out a new game with that engine every 4 to 6 years. Just long enough for people to forget (get nostalgic) about the last version. They did this with Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Mario, and even Zelda to an extent. Just because were not getting a new Zelda ever three years, a Mario Kart every year, and a new edition of Smash Bros every year like clockwork doesn't mean everyone isnt regurgitating what made them successful.

Meanwhile I can pick up Halo 5 brand new for $20. If Nintendo had released it it would still be $50, hard to find, and probably about to go up in price due to rarity.

"a game engine made in the 90's"
What engine is that? Super Mario 64 used a different engine than Super Mario Sunshine which used a different engine than Super Mario Galaxy which used a different engine than Super Mario 3D World. Nintendo creates new engines every generation, so what are you on about?

So many excuses, meanwhile, what's your made up excuses for:

Amiibo

Wii U controller adapter

3DS

3DSXL

That's just off the top of my head. Nintendo is so out of touch with not just fans, but reality, it's sad.

@geotherma:

The Amiibo and Wii U controller adapter shortages is quite easy to understand. The Wii U wasn't selling well at all, how were they supposed to know that people would want more amiibos than they would want Wii U's? The Wii U controller adapter was only used for one game (Super Smash Bros). Super Smash Bros was the fastest selling Wii U game on the market, and most of those people wanted a Gamecube controller adapter.

@lrdfancypants: Yeah growing up sucks. I kinda grew into Xbox and Playstation but grew out of Nintendo. When they went alittle more hardcore with in late N64, Gamecube days I thought I had made the right choice in sticking with Nintendo. Now I'm almost 30 and Nintendo products come off as redundant, overpriced, children toys. Got an Xbox in 2004 and never looked back... well okay I did.... in disappointment.

I cycled out for awhile as well and got the wii to play with my son which was fun.

I was an NESer and my Nintendo experience is not the Pokémon/smash etc.... it's the original Mario/duck hunt fun.

Weirdly we didn't quit gaming as much as quit gaming on Nintendo systems. His statement suggest they're unaware of that.
