Nvidia Shield shipping July 31

Company thanks fans for patience, says $300 gaming portable will launch on the last day of the month.

The Nvidia Shield portable gaming device will ship on July 31, Nvidia recently announced on its website.

No Caption Provided

"We want to thank you for your patience and for sticking with us through the shipment delay of your Shield," Nvidia said in a statement.

The Nvidia Shield was delayed last month one day before it was scheduled to launch due to the discovery of a mechanical issue.

"Our goal has always been to ship the perfect product, so we made sure we submitted Shield to the most rigorous mechanical testing and quality assurance standards in the industry," the company said. "We built Shield because we love playing games, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do."

The $300 Nvidia Shield gives gamers access to an array of gaming avenues, including Nvidia TegraZone, Google Play, and Steam. The system runs on the Tegra 4 processor and boasts 16GB of memory, GPS, Bluetooth 3.0, a mini-HDMI output, a microSD storage slot, and a headphone jack.

The device also features a five-inch, 720p multi-touch display. For more on the Nvidia Shield, check out GameSpot's preview of the device from the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year.

I am thinking that the Nvidia Shield will fail miserably especially at the high price, even more so than the Ouya has been. Which is unfortunate for the Ouya, since it is cool and fun for what it does. I have an Ouya, and I like it a lot.

@greenpolyp ...huh? Like 90+% of PC games come with native 360 pad support and can easily support others with external programs.

300$ is to much for this. Add 100$ and you get ps4, no thank you nVidia.

150$ is reasonable price

The details listed here make it sound great.

Shame it requires a PC with a GTX 6xx graphics card which isn't mentioned.

If it ran it all on its own, I would most likely get one. Since I have to have my PC on and with a top end GPU and stream games over the Wifi to the shield, they will not be having a penny from me.

@kamikazeespleen I didn't know it required certain Nvidia cards to work, that's just wrong, but you can get a 2 GB gtx 630 for about $100 so it's not an extra $400 like you said below.

still it's not right

Does someone care? Nvidia can't even dream to compete with 3DS and Vita for that price.

What is the appeal of Nvidia's new gamepad screen? Just buy a wired 360 controller for PC.

Probably another useless device like the n-gage or the WiiU's LCD Controller.

Why would I consider this for $300 when I could buy the overpriced PS Vita and still save $50? Or just add another $100 and buy the PS4.

With my phone gaming just as well or my iPad I don't see the need for this.

Too bulky and clunky for travel, at home I can just use my gaming rig or console. I don't see where this fits for such a big cost.

Edit : Actually I do see where it might fit. In the nVidia CEO's a__ for greenlighting this

Mmm... this thing is not really portable. I don't see myself using in in the bus, metro, etc. It's a great piece of hardware, but I can see an identity crisis cloud over it.

Android games don't appeal to me much. I've not found something as fantastic as Infinity Blade on iOS on Android yet. Streaming my PC games is fantastic but since it only works as far as my WiFi lets me, it is just useless. I'm okay with pausing it to take a poop. 300 dollars saved.

This may be the most useless device ever. ANd I say it as someone who always uses just NVidia cards.

I just don't see the appeal. To play pc games on a small screen within just a few meters of the PC as far as your wifi reaches?(don't forget that your pc has to be running to render the game) Why would I not play it on the PC itself but torture myself with streaming to a little screen?

And outside the reach of the wifi then what? angry birds?

I`ll take something like this that would be like the WIIU gamepad for PC but not for 300

Such a shame this is being based on Android. It'll feel like a knock-off Android phone. If Nvidia had chosen to build their own GUI and OS, it'd have been something special and had a far better chance at making progress. As it is, it's going to be seen as a ludicroisly expensive Ouya, and just look how well that platform is doing....i.e. horrifically.

I will NEVER understand all the portable fad crap. Can't people be out and about without some stupid ass device to "keep them entertained"? Have people become so ADD that they can't just set and do nothing? I wont even get a cell phone. People need to freakin UNPLUG sometimes. This thing looks like garbage.

My question is can this truly be used to replace the keyboard for PC games? If it can , then it has my interest. I will never get good with a keyboard and mouse. But that's just me.

@spartanx169x - Eh? you can just buy a controller for Pc for like $15 if you want one. No need to spend $300 on one of these for that.

@aovannor @spartanx169x I already have my xbox controller hooked up to my PC , However for 70% of the games that are on PC, its not supported. I have been trying different emulators, but I have not found something I really like. Biggest issue is getting the computer to think the triggers are mouse buttons. The issue is the PC thinks the triggers are an axis instead of buttons. So when you pull both triggers at the same time they cancel out each other. instead of being independent of each other. IF this NVidia thing fixes that it might be an option for me.

@spartanx169x @aovannor I use xpadder all the time in windows 7. It's works fine. PGP is more powerful but it's not as easy to use as xpadder, takes a bit more time to set up for each game and has a higher learning curve. Xpadder is usually enough for most games though. You should try Xpadder again.
