Pikmin, Pokemon revamp top Nintendo lineup

Publisher details Wii and DS releases for early 2009; first in "New Play Control" line of GameCube remakes with motion control.

Nintendo has enjoyed tremendous success thanks to the forward-thinking innovations of its DS and Wii systems, but the company's lineup is focused squarely on the past. The publisher revealed today its first-party and third-party lineup of Wii and DS games through March of 2009, with a scattering of revamps and remakes comprising the majority of its own games.

New Play Control! Pikmin
New Play Control! Pikmin

For the Wii, Nintendo has only two releases planned, both remakes of GameCube games designed to support the Wii Remote's motion-sensing capabilities. The self-explanatory New Play Control Mario Power Tennis and New Play Control Pikmin will both launch in March.

Nintendo's DS lineup is a little more robust, spearheaded by the March 22 launch of Pokemon Platinum. Platinum reuses characters and settings from Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl in a franchise tradition dating back to Pokemon Yellow for the original Game Boy, a pseudosequel that incorporated elements of the previously released Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue.

Beyond Platinum, Nintendo has two more DS games planned through March. Up first will be Personal Trainer: Math on January 12, an arithmetic addition to the practical game series that started with Personal Trainer: Cooking. Those looking for something a little more gamey can try Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon on February 16. The latest release in the turn-based strategy series will be a remake of the original NES Fire Emblem (which never made it to North America), with new touch-screen controls.

I'll reserve judgment until I see what Nintendo has in store for Summer Fall and Winter. This is a weak lineup, but this is the first year that the Wii has been widely available. Most Wii owners are still playing catchup, so they have some time. That said, they need to get some new AAA games in the works or their lead will start to slip.

i swear to holy god if nintendo doesnt get with the program and quit flogging these old IPs for everything they are worth im going to throw my wii in the trash. If they INSIST on dredging up the past, i can think of several IPs that have not been touched in many generations that could use a serious update. they are incredibly innovative with the hardware, but their software division needs a good kick in the pants. however i can see the magic in it, for when you dont come up with new ideas, you dont have to spend a lot of money on R&D. lets put pokemon to rest and leave out mario kart until they can make it special again. same goes for smash bros, zelda and mario. do a good job on punch out, bring back kid icarus, and make a decent donkey kong game.

@misterstatus: Sad, but for the most part true :( ... I still hope that Nintendo will eventually remember it's core gaming audience, but for now - helas - we are stuck with "wiimakes" from Nintendo, PS2 ports from 3rd parties, and tons of "horsez", "petz" etc. for pre-teenage girls...

As someone who's been a gamer since the days of Donkey Kong in the arcades, back when Mario was known only as Jumpman and no one knew he had a brother, I've sort of grown over the years to think of Nintendo as a good friend. These days, unfortunately, I feel like my good friend has suddenly abandoned me and decided he'd rather hang out with my grandparents.

no, c'mon, im tired of remakes, yes granted some of theme are good, but the wii relies too heavily on them, i want new stuff, new stories, new characters, new adventures, c'mon nintendo this is why most wii hardcore owners have their wiis collecting dust on a corner and most of them have bought another system or are thinking of buying one. Im a huge nintendo fan but this is getting ridiculous i seriously cant find an excuse to turn on my wii again and this year seems like things arent going to change after all, so please nintendo dont turn your back on us, give us some new, interesting stuff ( oh just for the record, where the f*** is punch out?)

Ack, this sucks. I bought a 360 exclusively because of the wii game shortage-- I still love the thing, but I'm not gonna replay some game I didn't like in the first place only with a different control set. Nintendo could and should be doing so much better than this!

What on EARTH is Nintendo re-releasing games that are playable on the Wii already? The GCN has even died yet! Used games are still available, plus some select new titles.

Considering Pikmin and Mario Power Tennis are rare, I guess this is fine. If you can also play with the Gamecube controller though, this'll be perfect. Still it is a bit lazy of Nintendo for this line up.

What I find surprising is people acting like this is new stuff we're hearing. I thought it was already well known that the "Wiimakes" were coming. The idea has been in motion since before the console even shipped. ( << LINK REMOVED >> ). This idea isn't just some lazy strategy coming from the guys in first place, because when it was announced, they were in last.

This is why i went back to MMO's. Between the same crap over and over again, consoles have really gotten pathetic. The PS3 is nothing but hype. The X360 suffers similiar to the Wii in that companies make new RPG's for them and halfass them (Last Rement, Infinite Undiscover, Fable II), and the Wii, is just utter crap. I honestly bought the thing thinking that it would finally signal a new SNES era of games. Yet, past the Zelda, Metroid, Brawl, and Sunshine, everything else has been crap. Now that you have the selling power, bring back the Seal of Quality and keep this crap from filling up our landfills.

There are some decent DS titles (the highlight for me is pokemon Platinum) in this list, but not many. As for the Wii this is pitiful. Nintendo needs to make new games. Don't get me wrong, Pikmin was good and I've played Mario Tennis but I would like to see a Pikmin sequel not the same game with new controls. I'm very glad I have a 360 because I don't see any good games for Wii in sight for a long time. I'm looking forward to No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle because it seems like its the only last sign of a hardcore game for the Wii. I like Nintendo, but now I've lost respect for them now altogether.

That's an awful lineup for both systems. I won't gripe about the DS since Fire Emblem alone is enough to carry the quarter and there are a few other gems, but the Wii looks terrible. But then again, it is the Spring. I do like Nintendo's logical move to remake the best Gamecube games for the Wii, but I'm not going to spend $30 for something I've already played. It's a fair deal for the Wii newcomers, but not so much for the Gamecube holdovers.

I saw a list somewhere else that mentioned Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2 being released on the Wii. Those could be a couple more Gamecube remakes with Wii controls. I actually wouldn't mind checking those out. But seriously, Nintendo needs to come up with some new stuff.

It does make sort of sense. There are already more Wiis out there than ever were Gamecubes, and games like Pikmin or maybe Fire Emblem would benefit from Wiimote controls, so remaking them is a reasonable move. The games work on the hardware already, so the modifications are minor... it's just that I did have a Gamecube so I already own them all.

Face it folks. Nintendo does not care about the hardcore gamer. They care about all of our relatives who don't typically play video games. Now think about that. For most gamers, you have 2 paarents, 4 grandparents and who knows how many aunts and uncles Nintendo is choosing to make money off all of them insteead of just one person. That's why they sell 2M Wiis in 1 month and continue to rake in the cash. That's also why they are able to release all these mediocre games. The games are only mediocre to us gamers, but they're freaking awesome to your grandma. Now seeing that, consider this. Nintendo hooks all these new people on videogames by releasing a low powered, low cost game console. In a few years they may release a high powered, high cost game console and all the new "gamers" as well as the hardcore folks run out and buy it and they make even MORE money. I know it sounds crazy, but I'll ROFL-COPTER when it happens.

Wow. Just.......wow. I will forever call the Nintendo 64 and Super Nintendo the best systems from their company that I have ever played, but this.........wow. I've said this before SO many times. Other mascots like Kirby and StarFox have been starving for major attention. Those are 2 game franchises that I've never played and would play for the Wii if they were any good. Why can't they make games for them instead of remaking things? PS3, you're mine when your price goes down in March. Hopefully, HOPEFULLY, Nintendo gets their act together and actually make good games.

(continued) I'm thankful that the DS was created at least. Unlike the Wii, it manages to get a balance of hardcore and casual games that are good 80% of the time. DS deserves its praise while the Wii does not. Would you be quiet already mariokart64fan. Do you know how to punctuate a sentence correctly? All I see are wall-of-text's that consist of very loooooong run-on sentences with very poor punctuation. The Wii does not have better games than the other two next-gen consoles. Nintendo's 1st party titles are nice but it isn't enough to save the Wii this time around. I don't like to jump to conclusions but I'm positive you're underage. And judging by your attitude towards everything, I take it Mommy and Daddy bought ALL the games and consoles you currently posess.

HAHAHA! I TOLD YOU SO, In your face fbiagent34 about North America not receiving shovelware for Q1 2009. I tried to warn to everyone yesterday that their Wii's would be collecting dust for a while but nooooo, I'm always wrong and Nintendo will hopefully deliver the good games soon enough. See below All those thumbs down I received for the past week only proved my point once again. Nintendo DOES NOT care about Hardcore gamers. Shovelware, ports and remakes are just pathetic for the fastest selling console. Is Nintendo taking a page from $quare Enix because that's exactly what they do.
