Pikmin, Pokemon revamp top Nintendo lineup

Publisher details Wii and DS releases for early 2009; first in "New Play Control" line of GameCube remakes with motion control.

Nintendo has enjoyed tremendous success thanks to the forward-thinking innovations of its DS and Wii systems, but the company's lineup is focused squarely on the past. The publisher revealed today its first-party and third-party lineup of Wii and DS games through March of 2009, with a scattering of revamps and remakes comprising the majority of its own games.

New Play Control! Pikmin
New Play Control! Pikmin

For the Wii, Nintendo has only two releases planned, both remakes of GameCube games designed to support the Wii Remote's motion-sensing capabilities. The self-explanatory New Play Control Mario Power Tennis and New Play Control Pikmin will both launch in March.

Nintendo's DS lineup is a little more robust, spearheaded by the March 22 launch of Pokemon Platinum. Platinum reuses characters and settings from Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl in a franchise tradition dating back to Pokemon Yellow for the original Game Boy, a pseudosequel that incorporated elements of the previously released Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue.

Beyond Platinum, Nintendo has two more DS games planned through March. Up first will be Personal Trainer: Math on January 12, an arithmetic addition to the practical game series that started with Personal Trainer: Cooking. Those looking for something a little more gamey can try Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon on February 16. The latest release in the turn-based strategy series will be a remake of the original NES Fire Emblem (which never made it to North America), with new touch-screen controls.

you know, i'm not terribly mad at Nintendo for remaking Pikmin, if only for the fact that alot of people missed out on it the first time around. I think it got overlooked by alot of people in its day. But at the same time, I REFUSE to pay regular price for it...I'd just as soon let a friend borrow my Cube with Pikmin, then tell him to shell out full price. Otherwise yeah, this list is pretty rough...Fire Emblem is my highlight, but nothing else sparks any interest. And time-wise, Fire Emblem is getting released on top of some other big releases (mainly Street Fighter 4), so I probably won't even pick it up when it releases. You kinda get the feeling that Nintendo really shot its wad early last year, around when Brawl and Kart were coming out a month apart from each other...

A $30 game with crappy motion controls slapped on that will retail for $50? Thanks Nintendo, but no thanks. I'll stick to Brawl and Metroid, thank you very much. Those are actually worth $50 And why a remake, instead of an awesome sequel?

The new play control series is great for me because I never had a gamecube and don't want to buy the gamecube version because they sell for ridicules prices on ebay. I also hate the way the A,B,X,Y buttons are laid out on the cube controller.I can imagine how disappointed gamecube gamers are because this is basically reliving the cube days but with motion control and they want something new.

...what? this is oh so mediocre. the ds has a few good ones (fire emblem, ys, gta, final fantasy cc) in there. the wii however is pretty much barren of any good titles. i mean cmon, nintendo releases very few great titles to support their console that sells millions upon millions. if they cant support it with good first party games i think most core gamers will just stay away. i like pikmin and mario tennis as much as the next guy, but even the name "new play control" sounds like consumers getting ripped off. maybe they'll be budget titles...

*Sigh* I was so interested in how awesome Wii would be. I didn't notice until I got one that there are hardly any good titles. Sure, there's Twilight Princess, Metroid, Smash Bros., etc. Other than that, though, it's rare to see anything remotely worth playing on the "Upcoming Titles" lists. Just a bunch of, as you guys eloquently put it, shovelware. Crap to fill a release list and a bunch of ports of older games. I still have hope that we'll get a good game sometime soon, but really, I haven't picked up a Wiimote in quite a few months and I don't think it's likely that I will anytime soon judging by this list.

Quite disappointing. Really wish I didn't buy my Wii at launch and saved all the money I've wasted into it. Although there are some games I liked I could have lived without all four or five of the games I liked.

So they've given up on trying to make new games for the Wii and they're just retro-fitting the hits from the Gamecube? No... wait... if they were remaking the HITS from the Gamecube that list would be include a lot better titles. They're just re-making games for the sake of re-making games.

Jesus at the amount of shovelware in that list.... It's a shame the Wii is selling so well. We may very well be looking at the future of video games right here. 1-2 decent games per year....

OMG...I CANNOT wait for Crayola Colorful World!!!!!.....(sarcasm) /sigh... The fanboys can defend all they want (I am one too...as of now), but Nintendo is becoming crap...I am soooo sick of people continuing to defend this company when they are sooo damn lazy. You can say they have good games. You can say, "it will get better guys, don't worry...I can see the light!" Well guess what....I'm sick of waiting. I am BEYOND sick of remake after remake of recycled crap. I have been a fanboy from the VERY beginning, but I am starting to lose all faith in this company. My Wii's forecast for 09? : Dust collection and random Brawl battles

mariokart64fan: first you said - "this gen is full of ports just face it , the wii and ps3 seem to be the only exceptions" then said -"4 good games which are cod2 test drive unlimited saints row 1 and dead rising, 1 of which is on wii very soon , so ya" - so dead rising is an original title coming to the wii now, since wii is the exception to porting..?? did you know about re4 or twilight princess? ...contradicting yourself doesn't make a good point...If you can't see or admit that the wii has a hefty amount of poor games then you shouldn't rag on another system. I own both and have gone through a good amount of titles on each system. I also dont deny that ports are on every system...not just 360.

...success thanks to the forward-thinking innovations of its DS and Wii systems...For the Wii, Nintendo has only two releases planned, both remakes of GameCube games .-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-..-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- Cool, that'smforward thinking. "Let's make a 'new' system with 'new' tecnology to play 'new' games" can be traslated as: "Let's redesign or current system, with dated tecnology but a new control -with dated tecnology too- to play remakes of our current games and a lot of shovelware"

Wow. Instead of making a new pikimin or new Mario Tennis, they just port it over with new controls. That's milking it badly. That's very, very, very, very low for Nintendo... sigh, it's becoming harder and harder to justify Nintendo's new direction.

as for those complaining, they are , those new games take more time then ports. get real, what does ms have for 09, beside a n64 port of banjo tooie, or timesplitters 4 which is on wii as well , gta dlc is all i see lol, or saints row 3 , and the disappointment that is wwe lol i really dont see what all the fuss is about, 08 was a great year and every one is upset over one news article which doesnt include 3rd party high profile titles, pretty pethetic 5 or 6 of them are the only mentioned ones, but wheres disaster day of crisis, or 007 09 title, cod modern warfare 2 , , a couple of high profile wii titles, and no animal crossing wasnt a gc port twilight princess was, because they wanted games at launch unlike sony, and super paper mario wasnt even on gamecube so how can you call that a port, mariokart wii is wifi, so that is in no way a port , and you all knew nintendo was doing this at last years e3 lol , so why are you complaining about old news , thats like say oh banjo kazooie is coming on xbla that blah bla bla i wish goldeneye bla bla bla , get over it

I'm probably going to get a lot of thumbs down for saying this but the wii list looks horrible. It seems like people unconditionally praise Nintendo no matter what they do. They could release garbage with a new accesories and fanboys will say it looks interesting. The Wii is just as barren as the gamecube was or worse with games. PC, PS3, 360 all have great lineups and future releases to look forward to. This is coming from somebody who owns a Wii and loves/ grew up on nintendo. Hopefully Nintendo makes a come back with good games but it is incredibly unlikely because the casual market is their main concentration and is what is making them #1 in sales.

that list isnt a firm one, timesplitters 4 will be the killer title for wii, a second sight 2 would be nice to , aside from that very nice line up . 5 good wii games trivial pursuit pikmin mario power tennis nascar kart racing and house of the dead overkill , this excludes any game announced in between then ds has gta china town wars ,. another ds game about time lol ,

rumpomar, it must be nice that you all gotta have mediocre fpses like perfect dark zero which is less compared to a n64 cartridge .or hour of victory ,, meh , graphics are nothing then you get your halo 3 which was less impressive then halo 2 , or forza 2 which plays like an xbox 1 game , , this gen is full of ports just face it , the wii and ps3 seem to be the only exceptions, and i dont even like ps3 much but still, while 360 is plagued with fps after fps after rrod after disc scratch , its clear to me that 360 was rushed, and is no more better then your avarage pc i rather play mariokart wii then play games like burnout paradise. which all took from need for speed underground, very un original , and you probably cant admit it but wii has more better games in a year then 360 did , in its first year, i count 4 good games which are cod2 test drive unlimited saints row 1 and dead rising, 1 of which is on wii very soon , so ya

Luckily I have a PS3 to go along with my Wii, so I don't miss out on good games like Metal Gear 4, Dead Space, Fallout 3, LittleBigPlanet, Street Fighter IV, Bioshock, and Resident Evil 5. For those who only own a Wii should get a PS3, or an Xbox360 because you guys are missing out on some awesome games. Not only that Nintendo is in first place, so they see no reason to change things around if people keep buying their console. That's why gamers should buy another system to compete with Nintendo.

People need to calm down about Pikmin 3. It's already confirmed that it's in production. The reason they're remaking Pikmin 1 is because a lot of people (like me) never got the chance to play it. Pikmin, Mario Tennis, Madworld, Pokemon ds...that'll keep me busy for a while. I'm not complaining about the lineup for Q1 at all

Nintendo is so cheap, getting gamecube games, add new controller and nothing more and selling it as a new game. The kicker is that you could even play already the gamecube games on Wii. Wii is just a last gen console... and Nintendo knows. Wi fanboys cant acknowledgeable wii doesn't have any true game, Zelda, resident evil and metroid were remakes. Animal crossing, mario kart were worse than the older versions. Such an overrated console.
