PS4's PS Plus Free Games Of January Still Available

Start the year off with some free games.

We're nearing the end of January, but it's not too late to grab the free games that are now available for PlayStation Plus subscribers. January's allotment of free PS Plus games are still out on the PlayStation Store, meaning that titles like Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Batman: The Telltale Series have temporarily dropped to the low, low price of free for paying subscribers.

Mankind Divided is the headlining PS4 freebie this month. The dystopian cyberpunk role-playing game casts you as Adam Jensen and tasks you with catching a terrorist group, which you can do by being a stealthy detective or a tech-enhanced killing machine, or some mixture of both. As for Telltale's Batman game, this is the first season of the story and puts players in tricky situations as both Bruce Wayne and his crime-fighting alter-ego. The decisions you make will have some consequence on the relationships around you, and the overall story.

Now Playing: Free PS4/PS3/Vita PlayStation Plus Games For January 2018 Revealed

Other PS4 freebies in January include the wacky and fun party game That's You! (if you're outside of North America) and StarBlood Arena (which requires PlayStation VR). Additionally, PS Vita's free games, Uncanny Valley and Psycho-Pass: Mandatory Happiness, are both free on PS4, too. You may have to "purchase" Psycho-Pass on PS4 and PS Vita separately, however, since it is not normally part of Sony's Cross-Buy scheme. Note that in Europe and Australia, Psycho-Pass is only free on PS Vita, not PS4. Finally, PS3 owners get Sacred 3 and The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 for free.

You can see January 2018's full PS Plus lineup--covering PS4, PS3, and Vita--below, or you can claim them on the PlayStation Store. February's games have not yet been announced, but that news will likely be coming on January 31, with a release following on February 6.

  • Psycho-Pass: Mandatory Happiness (US only)

Garbage games! Typical! Sony can't do anything right. Only reason they're dominate is because competition was non existent so gamers had no choice. Give us REAL games and not junk. Bet next month will be indie junk too. XDDDDD

Now that I think of it there are already 3 monthly articles devoted to what the PS+ games are. Another one for it being almost the first Tuesday of the month crosses the line to being a bit ridiculous.

"free"

It requires a subscription in order to access the games, therefore they are rentals at best. Still, I enjoyed Deus Ex Mankind Divided, though I'm sorely disappointed that they put it on hiatus.

Haven't played Batman, and was interested, so there's that.

@mrdinghat: Still haven't grasped the concept of "free for subscribers"?

They can say "no games this month" and you would still have paid the subscription, so any games they give, for you who has the subscription, are free.

@mrdinghat: You can remove the free bonus games and still have a functioning paid service. If you remove the online component and multiplayer the service ends.

Hence: Free.

@RicanV: Unless you keep the subscription you lose access to those ''free'' games though so it it is really only ''free with conditions'' to be pedantic about it :)

@RicanV: They can disable the multiplayer service and still offer PS plus games. That wouldn't make the multiplayer component free, nor will the service end. It will basically be a subscription service, like PS NOW. Therefore the games are not free. They just appear that way. Like a buy one get one free offer is basically a two for one offer. There's nothing free in there.

@xgalacticax: By that logic, nothing is ever free. Even the free wifi you get downtown is not free because the city pays for it and you pay taxes for the city. I agree with this mentality to some extent. But at the same time I get why marketing doesn't care for it.

@xgalacticax: don't care, its free. They don't have to offer them when you're paying for the online service. If you don't llike it then don't download the game or get the service. simple as that.

@xgalacticax: no the multiplayer service is the core component of ps plus.

It's similar to getting free sprinkles on an ice cream cone. I'm not sure Baskin Robbins will remove selling ice cream to just sell sprinkles.

And I don't believe that there is a service where you pay monthly for random digital goods with no indication of what you'll receive.

@RicanV: PlayStation Plus started as a discount and backup service. The free games were added. Years later, they turned it into their multiplayer service. The price/value was established before multiplayer required it.

@TrueLink: yeah except they didn't turn PS+ into the MP service. Remember, the online MP component for PS2/PS3 didn't used to be behind the paywall of PS+ service as they were completely free on those consoles. In my opinion, PS+/XBL service would have zero value if they didn't mandate people to subscribe in order to use the MP online component (bar some MMO/FTP/PTW games).

I would drop paying for PS+/XBL in a heartbeat if the online MP component were free or if more of my friends are on Steam.

@TrueLink: it is 2018 and the service is different.

There is no "established price/value" as both the price and services are different.(Even Qore is gone)

Just to reiterate my point: if you remove multiplayer as a feature is there a PS+ right now? And if you remove the free games can PS+ still exist?

Even in the case of launch ps+ the games were still a bonus and you could have a functioning service without them.

@mrdinghat: no, it is still "free" since sony could easily have charged users a fee to play online with no other perks like how microsoft handled xbl back in the 360 era... back then 360 users paid $50/year just for online access and no "free" games included. also, how can the "free" games be considered rentals if you will always have the games in your account so long as you are a ps+ member? a rental would expire after a few days or weeks...

then you have nintendo charging $25/year for switch online play, but they will not be giving out any modern games for "free". they are only handing out some 20 year old nes/snes games which has much less value than what sony is doing with ps+ by a large margin.

anyways, this topic has been going in circles for 5 years now -- how one perceives the word "free" will vary from person to person and there is no definitive answer.

@Xristophoros: If you stop paying, you lose access so they are not free. These games are just incentives to keep paying and they are under the paid service. I practically never play PS games online so I am basically paying a subscription for the so called free games...which ends up being more expensive than my Netflix subscription that gives me access to thousands of movies that no one will call free. In my case I am paying exclusively for the games that you call free... because there are some pretty good games that come out occassionally. Also a classic NES game has more value than a garbage 'modern' game, so Switch owners are still getting value for less than half the amount the competition charges. Im not sure how the age of a game diminishes its value. Id gladly pay more for Resident Evil 2 than most games on PS4. Once in a while Sony puts out gems like MGS and Deus Ex but for the most part the PS Plus games are rubbish.

@xgalacticax: So stop paying for PS+? I don't get the issue. If you don't like it, don't use it. The games are additional incentives. Are they free? That's a debatable question. It depends on what you perceive you're actually paying for. Since I don't feel like I'm paying PS+ to get monthly games, I feel like the games are an additional incentive.

@rmiller365: Microsoft and Sony were selling their consoles at a loss. Packaging the Netflix app under an online service package made sense and wasn’t as much a money grab as it was a means to justify making consoles in the first place. Is it so hard to understand that corporations exist to make money?!?

@consolehaven: Consoles were sold at a loss before online gaming and they just made money on accessories and games. They are sold at a loss because people won't pay for the actual value of a console. The PS4 has an 8 core processor in it which on it's own would retail around $1000, no one is going to pay over $1000 for a game console and these companies know that. My point is they knew how to make profits from losing money on a console well before Netflix even existed so charging extra for it later was just a greedy way to make even more money. Netflix was also always free to use since it came out though you have to pay for a subscription you don't also pay Microsoft to be able to use it on windows 10.

@drunk_punk: What are you smoking? The processors in both the PS4 and Xbox One are both garbage and not worth anywhere near $1000. They were designed to be used in tablets, not consoles (or gaming rigs for that matter), but were adapted for the purpose because they were low cost.

Microsoft and Sony are not losing money on each PS4 and Xbox One sold. It was published at the time they launched that Sony made $18 on every PS4 sold, whilst Microsoft made $28 on every Xbox One sold. Sure the prices have been cut since then, but the cost of the hardware inside those machines has also dropped. They are probably still making money on each console sold.

@domiddian: I was mostly referring to when they were released, of course now the graphics or processor isn't worth $1000 though i definitely wouldn't go as far to say they are cheap as you did. Over time the hardware inside the consoles depreciates in value so they do start making profits or getting close to profitable. I'm not sure if it is profitable yet though, but you seem to believe it has been for some time with "They are probably still making money", I won't deny that because it is possible but do you have proof to back it up? Text is hard to read into and i'm not asking for proof out of anger or spite but curiosity.

@drunk_punk: I was also referring to when they first released. Here is an article from November 2013 based on a teardown of the hardware. There were many other articles published stating this, even right here on Gamespot:

@consolehaven: If Microsoft AND Sony where selling their consoles at a loss then why was Microsoft the only one to not only charge for online, (PSN was free then) but hide streaming behind a paywall?? You are also assuming that a company as big as microsoft (one that has absorbed billions in losses) needs additional funding to make a console to sell at a loss.. It's not hard to understand that corporations exsist to make money, It is hard to understand why I would pay to stream something on xbox when every other streaming option available did the same thing for free.
