Resident Evil 6 'lost its momentum' to fall 2M short of target

Capcom's latest iteration of the survival horror franchise fails to meet expectations; latest in the Devil May Cry series also suffers.

The contentious multi-campaign mishmash of Resident Evil 6 fell 2 million short of its estimated sales target of 7 million, Capcom has announced.

No Caption Provided

Speaking as part of its Q3 FY2013 results, the publisher revealed that the latest Resident Evil managed to sell 4.8 million copies worldwide. "Despite recording brisk sales when it debuted," says Capcom, the game "subsequently lost its momentum, resulting in the failure to achieve planned sales and fulfill its role as a driver of sales expansion."

As a result, the company has revised its Resident Evil 6 sales estimate to a total of 5 million units shipped before the end of its financial year on March 31. Ninja Theory's DmC: Devil May Cry has also had its sales figure shrink, to 1.2 million--down significantly from the 2 million sales Capcom predicted last year.

Resident Evil 6 was critically panned upon its release in October, receiving a 4.5 in its GameSpot review. "Resident Evil 6 is a mishmash of elements put together without any sense of care or direction. Series faithful might stumble through for the sake of story, and perhaps to appreciate those few moments that recall when Resident Evil was at its peak glory," said our reviewer, Kevin, at the time. Capcom is now talking about the possibility of rebooting the series.

Overall, Capcom has announced a 39.2 percent year-on-year increase in profits and sales on the last three months of the year. The publisher specially praised the success of Dragon's Dogma and the HD rerelease Monster Hunter Tri G on the Wii U, and also attributed its rude health to Japan's burgeoning social and smartphone markets.

I can't believe this garbage sold 5 million copies while some truly inspired games will never even reach 1 million

Not surprised! RE4 was something everyone talked about. RE5 just bought it to HD, RE6 was just the developers going nuts and to be as mad as they possibly can to see Western looking characters getting killed or whatever. This is great news to me. Maybe to Capcom too because they're grossly tired of the people wanting to make RE6 (the actually crew who created it, not the fans) and too see the design crew run off with the wages Capcom provided to make more crap!

Devil May Cry was a good reboot. I wish people would see that thou! I was actually surprised by how good DmC became to be honest! People who didn't like it has no taste in art.

Excuse my lack of sportmanship. I'll be happy to describe that you should take a chance of playing DmC and see for yourself because it is a well put together game.

I'd like to point something out here: "Resident Evil 6 was critically panned upon release. It received a 4.5 on our site."

Hmm...let's take a look at Gamerankings. PS3 is 74%, 360 is 69%, averaging to 72%. Is that really being "critically panned" when the exact same phrase is used to describe atrocious messes like Sonic 06?

But hey, you can't trust Gamerankings like you can Metacritic, so naturally...wait...67 on 360 and 74 on PS3, averaging to 71. Huh. Guess you can't trust everything you read from biased review sites. Or--to be fair--maybe it was a misstatement on the part of Gamespot.

Seriously though, if getting in the 70's is now what we call "panned" instead of more accurate terms like "mediocre" or "average," I think gamers should take a long look in the mirror and ask themselves who's REALLY destroying the industry. Is it the companies? Or is it the rising standards that gamers refuse to control or slow down? Just a thought.

Resident Evil 6 didn't deserve to sell well because it was a terrible game. DmC, on the other hand, did in my opinion. Disappointing, but I suppose the standard Ninja Theory curse doesn't mix well with a mob of squealing fanbabies.

I'm starting to think that survival horror should be kept to the indie scene. Amnesia, Lone Survivor, and Slender were scarier than pretty much any big budget horror game I've played. Though I will admit to loving Dead Space's combat system quite a bit.

@Mortz_88 Eh, I'm not really invested all that much in the game's success, even though I did very much like the abomination.

That being said, I think Capcom will give the entire series the axe; they will interpret the poor sales numbers as "We'd rather no Devil May Cry at all." And if that's really how the fanbase at large feels, well, it'll probably get its wish.

No skin off my back, really; there's a lot of great stuff on the horizon, and I'm pretty much over this franchise as a whole.

I know this is a big no no on the interwebz, but does this article sort of prove a certain company right about how the graphics and power race are costing the industry in a lot of cases? Back in my day (sorry, it is just so fun to say), a game had to sell 250K to break even, 500K to be a hit and if it hit 1 million it was a huge success. Now, if the game doesn't sell 7 million its in trouble? And lets talk turkey shall we, RE6 is one of the most sloppy RE games ever put out. RE5 is better in almost every way, and that game had all kinds of flaws. If RE6 cost as much to make as 5, the only games any of us are going to be playing within the next 10 years will stat with the word Madden or Call of D....

@ekalbtwin Very well put, as you would think 5 million copies sold would be considered a success. I do prefer this version however, as everything and the kitchen sink still has me playing this frequently, unlike 5.

I had a good time with RE 6 until I had to format my PS3 and lost everything I've downloaded for it. Since the game was clearly rushed and it still keeps getting updates, I quit for now. I'm waiting for RE Revelations and RE 6 Gold Collection.

And I hope, if Capcom plans to make RE 7, follow this recipe: 2 characters maximum to go through the story, oppressive, bloody environments, no censored deaths, the return of Claire AND, please, bring back the store box we had until Code Veronica!

Wow, I know 1 guy that has the same thing happen. My sympathy. But if I were you, I'll replay the game over again. I like this game as much as Arkham City/ Asylum in that even though I completed everything 100%, I still want to play the game all over again because its so much fun. Most fun as Jake cause I can beat the shit out of everyone with my bare hands, and there's some missions that's like Mgs with unarmed enemies. Man I wish that kind of stage can go on even longer.

Capcom will never make RE7 in the way that you want. They will make a reboot of the series. Sounds like a good idea huh? Then it turns out the Reboot is like DmC, with the lovable characters like Chris, Leon, Wesker, Jill, Claire and Ada as COLLEGE PUNK TEENAGERS!!!! It will be a college esque horror game taking place in Raccoon City, with Chris, Leon, Jill, Rebecca, Barry and Claire as the "special group of supernatural enthusiasts STARS" who can recruit new members like Carlos and Billy Coen, with Ada as school nurse, William Birkin as a crazy science teacher, Wesker as the headmaster of the university "umbrella Institute, where dreams becomes reality", Oswald D Spencer as his father, and HUNK as a gym teacher with gas masks on!!! Yeah, this reboot is going to happen. And most interestingly, the setting will be the same as DmC with two worlds: normal and zombierific where each night zombies roams the school. Hopefully this new direction works out well, with an addition of dating system and trust that will in the end give a true golden ending with everyone getting out of the nightmare alive, just like Persona 3. Who knows though, this might work, combine the charm of Persona 3 and the horror of RE, and you got a very fucked up game indeed.

It's not a mixed bag. I played all the RE games and I go along with the settings just fine. The ones who thought its a mixed bad are those morons that can't get over the fact that its already 8 years since their complaint actually matters in the first place.

Not sarcastic. At first it is, then I realise that This could work perfectly. Just look at persona 3 and 4. Those are great games about school life with tons of replayability, especially considering the number of pretty girls that you can date. :D Re needs that feature too. It's perfect. Rebecca, Claire, Jill, Sheeva, Ada and the plethora of girls in the series, wow, I would so date them. When the game is officially made, if the character is a new guy fresh from the city, the main character will be the chick magnet of RE besides Leon. Itll take off the stress from zombie running and hunting later. Muahahahaha

They're lucky it sold that much. The game sucked. Bad.

They should either team up with Platinum or beg Mikami back. They don't have any other choices. Unless they want to get that Cliff B guy, but I think that would be bad(but probably successful).

If you think Re6 is bad, then you will hate Dead Space 3. It plays almost exactly the same way as the other. And guess what? It got 80 here. If its reviewed by Kevin Van whatever, he'll give the game 4.5 too.

Well Capcom... you realize you've got two choices now. Make the next game more about survival horror, or try to cram more frenzied action and inane button presses into the game. Oh god....... I know which one they'll pick.

Be realistic people, the high rate of global unemployment and financial crisis will impact on all sales - regardless of publishers and developers wishes and dreams.... reality is the money for gaming and other hobbyist activities is sparse thesedays - levels of expendable cash are low.

I wonder how many of this can capcom take before becoming the next THQ. so far they've had 4 games in a row that haven't sold as expected: SFxT, RE:ORC, RE6, DmC.

going back some time, I've heard lost planet 2 didn't sell well, going even further back as far as I know okami has never really sold well even though it's a great games although I personally dislike the art style, also I believe beautiful joe never sold well even though apparently it's a good game (I also dislike the visuals), I also believe killer 7 didn't sell well, breath of fire dragon quarter didn't sell for s*!t and marked the end of the BOF games.

most of those games have been expensive to make, most of them were heavily promoted (which also costs lots of money), a lot of those games in all seriousness are not bad, but they either deviated to far away from what the fans knew and loved and failed to grab a new audience, others failed because they wanted to be a copy of something else, others failed maybe because of their looks but most importantly, a couple of them failed for capcom's own greed and they deserve that failure like a MOTHA F#$%A!

@Thomas-Crown It was no CoD, no Halo, no Battlefield (I hate multiplayer games). Resident Evil 6 had something different about it. Me and my friends like the fact that you can walk and shoot. Yes I do agree, horror is vital (Silent Hill also lost it's horror touch after the original developer left), the series was based around horror in the first place. They tried a new play style and it didn't work. The rest of us are "Loyal to the end" with Capcom...

Played it round a friend's house for a few hours. Didn't like it. Didn't impress me. Seemed like a work of glamour without simple solid foundations that had made the RE series great. Net result = first RE game in the main series ever that I didn't buy and don't plan to either. It's just a shooter now, and not one as good as 4 was either.

Fans have no loyalty to publishers . Publishers have the right to squeeze the amount of budget on making games . Publishers don't get orders from higher people, They put the orders =Publishers lose the fans .

@HiImUPSMan They want to keep the coop in hopes of increasing sells, and online components. Hopefully this will show them that a shitty content will also kill sales. If they want to keep coop - why not freq have the story line coop parter split up - each traversing the scary atmosphere alone with only cell phone messages to inform each other of their progress. Freq to get past an area they would need the help of the other.

I swear, data polls and bean counters are ruining games. Whatever seems fashionable of the day is what they keep adding in, "hey COD sold well, lets add in more FPS", "we can eek out a few more dollars if we add coop, that way each person will need to get their own copt and be less likely to sell used.", "oh and we need to add a jar jar binx to bring in that youth crowd"

You know I keep asking myself what game in the series had such low sales that the management publishers said to them selves- "well since RE 2, RE3, Code veronica, RE4 , didn't sell well, lets add a bunch of stupid chit and see what sticks."

I hope so, as a self-professed Resident Evil fanboy, even I had a very hard time sitting through the game. Leon's campaign was the only redeeming quality, and I played that scenario first, because I knew it would be good, of which I was partially disappointed. Playing the other scenarios, however, bordered on painful. Especially Chris' "Gears of Evil" campaign. I'm just glad I played as Piers, to help me forget that it was an RE game. Ada wasn't bad, but only because you got to play it solo.

@theloneturkey @jark888 Silent Hill, seriously? I haven't recalled Silent Hill ever reach the same high as Resident Evil. Silent Hill can rank the second in my opinion. The series use to be the only competitor to RE series, but, for now, Dead Space is RE's only prominent competitor.
