Resident Evil 6 'lost its momentum' to fall 2M short of target

Capcom's latest iteration of the survival horror franchise fails to meet expectations; latest in the Devil May Cry series also suffers.

The contentious multi-campaign mishmash of Resident Evil 6 fell 2 million short of its estimated sales target of 7 million, Capcom has announced.

No Caption Provided

Speaking as part of its Q3 FY2013 results, the publisher revealed that the latest Resident Evil managed to sell 4.8 million copies worldwide. "Despite recording brisk sales when it debuted," says Capcom, the game "subsequently lost its momentum, resulting in the failure to achieve planned sales and fulfill its role as a driver of sales expansion."

As a result, the company has revised its Resident Evil 6 sales estimate to a total of 5 million units shipped before the end of its financial year on March 31. Ninja Theory's DmC: Devil May Cry has also had its sales figure shrink, to 1.2 million--down significantly from the 2 million sales Capcom predicted last year.

Resident Evil 6 was critically panned upon its release in October, receiving a 4.5 in its GameSpot review. "Resident Evil 6 is a mishmash of elements put together without any sense of care or direction. Series faithful might stumble through for the sake of story, and perhaps to appreciate those few moments that recall when Resident Evil was at its peak glory," said our reviewer, Kevin, at the time. Capcom is now talking about the possibility of rebooting the series.

Overall, Capcom has announced a 39.2 percent year-on-year increase in profits and sales on the last three months of the year. The publisher specially praised the success of Dragon's Dogma and the HD rerelease Monster Hunter Tri G on the Wii U, and also attributed its rude health to Japan's burgeoning social and smartphone markets.

It's a shame DmC didn't sell more. It's the best game in the series.

@santinegrete it is rushed because the game was going to be released in November but pulled back to September because Capcom was afraid of Black Ops 2, Halo 4 and Assassin's Creed 3.

Best news I've read all day. Capcom is one of the most anti-consumer game companies out there and anything bad that happens to them puts a smile on my face.

Oh, Capcom, you. The latest game didn't sell well? Let's work to make RE7 go back to its roots as a slow pace - survival horror game. HOW ABOUT NO, let's just reboot the whole damn thing!

If you cut out some campaings RE6 is a good game, the game really shines with coop gameplay and honestly is one of the most technical third person shooters i' ever played and requires a lot of skill to play in high levels, you need to know when to do quick shoots and how to use melee if you want to save stamina and learn some coordination with you pals, personally i am happy with the game, it has it's own flaws sure but is unfortunate that some people don't form their own opinion by playing the game at his full potential.

@alenth Not true at all, you can easily just mash what ever buttonswait a few and mash again, thats all you need to do, even thru pro mode which I noticed every other mode has gotten so easy , pro mode should have been "normal" while no hope left should have been pro

@alenth @Bordonaro In Bordonaro's defense I just completed Leon's campaign on Veteran (I think that's what it was called, apologies if mistaken) was my first attempt at resident evil 6 and it felt like the sum-up of what i was doing was mashing buttons untill i pass. However Chris' campaign appears to be different as in that, things (no idea what they are, J'ava?) seem to shoot back.

@alenth You describe it as a 3rd person shooter. That's what fans didn't want. They wanted a survival horror not a glorified action game.

@179107199999 @alenth fans wanted both genres in the franchise, a lot of ideas in the final game came from feedback by the community (especially capcom unity), i don't mind if it's action or not i just try to enjoy the game based on his own merits, the flaws in the game didn't stopped me to enjoy it, just like RE: revelations and the old RE games.

@HybridExtreme @179107199999 @alenth Yeah, when developers need to satisfy a lot of people with differentes tastes the games just become experiments at the cost of dividing the community sometimes, this happened to WoW, and now happens RE, a lot of the new RE fans started with RE4 not with the old games i think people likes more the approach with RE: revelations in this case, it would be good to polish that formula even more.

@179107199999 @alenth It's a no-win situation for Capcom. As far as what fans wanted, it is true that fans asked for a third person shooter style game with the ability to move n shoot at the same time. My question to you 179107 and a bunch of other numbers, is what exactly do you think fans wanted if not a third person shooter? The alternatives would be a first person shooter, not! A third person perspective with static backgrounds? I only ask because I can't imagine a better design than what was put into the game.

@179107199999 @alenth I agree but the game changed since the 4th game for better or worse, some people get tired of the action genre, i said in another post that one of the problems now with AAA games is the process of including a lot of genres in one game, variety is good but sometimes it costs the soul of the franchise maybe this is what happened to RE, although i enjoyed the game i agree with you in this part.

Dear Capcom, I am one of the 4 people who actually like Resident Evil 6. My residual anger comes from Operation Raccoon City as well as the on disc DLC fiasco You really ripped me a new one there didn't you! Well although I loved RE 6, don't take my passion for the game as satisfaction for the company. You people have developed a greed based formula, using the dedication of gamers as your personal money machines. Were you and EA secretly working together to rip people off, or was that just a coincidence? Well you fooled me with Resident Evil ORC and you surprised me with RE-6 but next time it's my turn. Surprise, I'm keeping my money for a Ubisoft title!

@HybridExtreme How about the new DLC strategy... don't make it available for download... Dragon's Dogma gets new content but to play it you have to buy the re-issued version of the game with the expansion on there rather than download it.

@TTDog Because Dark Arisen is not just an expansion, they also made tons of changes to the core game, hence they couldn't just make Dark Arisen a standalone package.

The conceit of the original Resident Evil was pretty simple - and amazingly-well executed. You're alone with a small team of comrades trying to survive against who-knows-what in a scary mansion. The game placed an emphasis on two words: SURVIVAL and HORROR.

Somehow it morphed into an action extravaganza with a convoluted backstory. The series lost its way.

Given that the gameplay has changed too radically, and the story became too complicated, and we are now getting new consoles, this is the *very definition* of a series that is ready for a reboot.

Hit reset, reintroduce your key characters, world, and gameplay with a mega-budgeted beautiful, scary world, and print money. This isn't that difficult a decision, Capcom!

@alenth It kind of makes sense now, doesn't it? I was wondering how games like Gears of War have been so damn successful yet the games from 1 to 3 have remained virtually the same. Nothing but recycled material with some new almost trivial additions here and there but it's the same damn game. While Capcom on the other hand have the balls to try something radically different with each entry (even if it's not always something good), but still.

I personally didn't like RE6. It felt like another generic shooter and the QTEs got very annoying because there were so many for every little thing. What I did enjoy however was Leon's campaign until it got all action packed, then it just felt like the other campaigns. Jake's campaign was ok there just weren't enough chase scenes as I'd thought there would be. So yeah it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great. I would put this RE at the bottom of the pile of the rest of the RE games.

Remember that article on Gamestop where Capcom said that RE fans want more action and another one where they said survival horror was dead (I can't find them anymore). The fans tried to tell Capcom otherwise. They said keep RE the way it is and improve on it, but nope. Many fans were just ignored and this is the end result. Next time listen to your fans, they know what they want. I'll give 'em this though putting the 3DS RE on consoles was a smart move...pricing it $50 not so smart though

TL;DR I thought RE 6 was "meh" and Capcom thought they knew what fans wanted and survival horror was dead and they were wrong.
