Resident Evil 6 'lost its momentum' to fall 2M short of target

Capcom's latest iteration of the survival horror franchise fails to meet expectations; latest in the Devil May Cry series also suffers.

The contentious multi-campaign mishmash of Resident Evil 6 fell 2 million short of its estimated sales target of 7 million, Capcom has announced.

No Caption Provided

Speaking as part of its Q3 FY2013 results, the publisher revealed that the latest Resident Evil managed to sell 4.8 million copies worldwide. "Despite recording brisk sales when it debuted," says Capcom, the game "subsequently lost its momentum, resulting in the failure to achieve planned sales and fulfill its role as a driver of sales expansion."

As a result, the company has revised its Resident Evil 6 sales estimate to a total of 5 million units shipped before the end of its financial year on March 31. Ninja Theory's DmC: Devil May Cry has also had its sales figure shrink, to 1.2 million--down significantly from the 2 million sales Capcom predicted last year.

Resident Evil 6 was critically panned upon its release in October, receiving a 4.5 in its GameSpot review. "Resident Evil 6 is a mishmash of elements put together without any sense of care or direction. Series faithful might stumble through for the sake of story, and perhaps to appreciate those few moments that recall when Resident Evil was at its peak glory," said our reviewer, Kevin, at the time. Capcom is now talking about the possibility of rebooting the series.

Overall, Capcom has announced a 39.2 percent year-on-year increase in profits and sales on the last three months of the year. The publisher specially praised the success of Dragon's Dogma and the HD rerelease Monster Hunter Tri G on the Wii U, and also attributed its rude health to Japan's burgeoning social and smartphone markets.

the fact that 4.8 million people bought this turd of a game shows that brainwashed fanboys will buy anything.

What's next? Resident Evil soap to wash their brains? come on guys, RE6 is garbage and everyone knows it; read the pro reviews!

@jma1024x As a Fanboy who didn't buy this game because I have a working brain and standards I take offence if you didn't add the brainwashed adjective before hand.

@jma1024x Thanks for your input and narrow minded answer, but some people do like the game genuinely, considering I still play it.

@hehe101 @jma1024x Actually he made an observation and I've witnessed the stupidity of people like that first hand so I'm sad to say it is true. Though I would correct him in pointing out that a lot of units were sold by marketing rather than just fanboys. I have also pointed out as a Fanboy I didn't get Resident Evil 6.

Finally there is a difference between I liked this and the quality of the product being liked. LEARN IT! There have been plenty of games I've adored that frankly aren't the highest ended games but I know the difference between I liked this and this is a quality product. One is a statement of my preferences the other is a statement of a measurable quantity and quality.

Maybe if it wasn't a pandering fest the game would have been better. I have no problem with updating it for the times or changing it if needed. I am not even against the idea of making it more action like if it can be done right or keeping the horror. I am sure before Persona 3 came out and people heard Atlus was adding a social element people probably thought that was stupid because why make your character have to go to high school in an RPG where you are saving the world? Of coarse now if Atlus did not include a social element in Persona 5 people would be outraged. Change can be good but it needs to be done right. The reason Resident Evil 4 was good is because you can tell Capcom put some effort into it where as with 6 they wanted to make an action packed game to try and capitalize on games like COD and Gears.

@coolhady13 while I do believe David Cage knows what he is talking about to a degree, I find it highly amusing he would make this statement after making three games in a row that are almost the exact same experience. He's making sequels but calling them something different. Mark my words, Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls will be almost identical.

That is not to say I do not love Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy, Heavy Rain and probably Beyond: Two Souls. He should watch where he throws stones though.

@VegasAceVII I like David Cage's work, but I'm glad that very few are willing to follow his example. While I loved Heavy Rain and Indigo Prophecy (to an extent), they weren't much fun to play.

What the hell is "survival horror" anyway? How having this "survival horror" would suddenly make the game better? This whole argument is so stupid.

@nurnberg Survival Horror is a genre where the player is set in a horror senerio be it zombies, monsters, ghosts, mutants, parasites (Cold Fear style) and are tasked with surviving with limited Resources.

A smartly made Survival Horror typically comes with a well crafted world to increase immersion so that the player cares more about what is going on. There is a subtle art to the placement of ammo and weapons. Finding that powerful shotgun after venturing off the main path is extremely rewarding. Thanks to the scarce resources you don't go run and gun but consider your approach and how much you will have to expend vs how much you might have to expend later. Is it worth wasting your rifle ammo on that medium level enemy if there is a boss coming up? Can you sneak past instead of fighting? All questions you have to ask yourself.

Now not every survival horror leans toward the survival over the horror. Some focus more on the horror environment and mechanics and these are okay games but as FEAR demonstrated you can't make them more marketable without sacrificing a good portion of sales.

In short it is a genre where is you try to mainstream it will fail as Capcom is learning. All this is why it would make the series better again.

I enjoyed 6 but not like I did the others in the series. It is time to bring the horror back. Resident Evil catapulted survival-horror. It can do it again.

Don't play stupid Capcom, we know we confuse you with buying millions of copies of Resident Evil 4, 5 and 6 but you are not listening to the feedback. You know what we want. Compare critic/user response of Resident Evil 6 to Resident Evil Revelations and you have your answer. Too busy looking at sales numbers Capcom. Styles like Resident Evil Revelations may not sell 10 million copies but it will provide a good source of steady profit each installment.

I can guarantee that if Capcom listens to the whining "fans" and release a game like they demand, it will flop even worse in sales. Why? Because the butthurt whiners are not really fans. They are just bandwagon haters. These people just hate Resident Evil, period, and would not buy a game in the series.

@nurnberg As an actual Fanboy I didn't get Resident Evil 6. The corporate practices and the wrong direction kept me away from that title.

What you are advocating is mindlessness that is refuted by Kickstarter Campaign Funded Games and Indi Games where the developers work closely with the fans of their genre often producing very interesting and enjoyable games.

@lasersword @Kevin75 @nurnberg there is some truth to it troll or not.most fans didn`t buy the game which lowered game sales, some did get it thinking it going back to the originals only to be disappointed.now if capcom makes a games like the fans want it still might not sell that much cause there is no telling how many original fans there really are.and of those that are how many of those will like the way it was made or find something else to complain about.

@green_scorpion @nurnberg If they played the game they would know that all the stupid things that people are whining about in the game are false. The game is nowhere like COD. Also, it is survival horror. You don't have a lot of ammo and you have to use melee a lot. Chris' campaign do not have anymore shooting and action than the other campaigns. I know because I have finished the four campaigns. Do you?

What a relief those two monstrosities were financial disappointments. Now maybe Capcom will reexamine the way they have been treating their fans lately. I just hope against hope the same happens with Dead Space 3 this week.

Oh, Capcom is thinking of rebooting Resident Evil now, huh? Resident Evil: Twilight? Buncha chain-smoking transvestite-looking emo's cursing like sailors and killing zombie's? No thanks, Capcom. You don't have to reboot the series... did the DmC fiasco not teach you anything? Stop being idiots and just bring back survival horror and stop trying so hard to change and evolve the games. Just give fans what they want and you'll have your sales.

@HybridExtreme The mere thought of "Lego Resident Evil" has me throwing money at my computer screen in the sincerest hopes that this one day gets made. With all the less compelling parts of the original series entree's we lovingly ignore brought to the forefront with the humorous antics of Lego. Easily a 10/10

*YAWN*...this is the very reason why I couldn't...and still can't get into the past survival horror titles. Too much back tracking, running past enemies instead of killing them...just boring.

Capcom hasn't been on my good side lately but I do agree with the direction they are taking the series by adding more action. However, I do believe that it needs a bit more of the horror aspect..I can do without the survival

If you think a game series can stay the same for eternity you're an idiot. RE4 was way different from RE 1, 2 & 3 yet it got lots of praise. RE6 isn't all that different from 4 and many things are done even better. You're simply stupid if you think majority of people want to play oldskool horror games in modern graphics. YOU NEED A CHANGE TO STAY WITH THE TIMES. I didn't put that in capitals without a good reason. I paid a retain price for RE6 and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I don't like Chris' campaign but all the other campaigns are great. One other thing: RE series hasn't been scary for years. RE4 and RE5 weren't scary either. You have to accept that fact. If you want a scary game, look elsewhere. They're not out of market yet.

@FKlepackiFTW I thought the highlight was RE4. I didn't care much for the other RE because it just didn't appeal to me. I do agree that you need to change to stay relevant, but the gamers themselves didn't think too highly of RE5 and in some part RE6. I think thats a sign that though they do need to change RE franchise, perhaps straying away from its origins was too much.

Somethings you can leave the same and the fun will still be intact (i.e. Super Mario)...BUT I will agree that much change was needed with the RE series because the original 3 were just plain boring to me.
