Resident Evil 6 suffered due to 'inadequate organizational collaboration'

Publisher says development "challenges" and poor efforts in marketing and promotion led to latest game coming up short.

Capcom has explained why it believes Resident Evil 6 came up short. The publisher said in a recent question and answer session that though shipments of 5 million copies means the game has been successful to a degree, development "challenges" and "inadequate organizational collaboration" led to the title performing under expectation.

No Caption Provided

"We are currently analyzing the causes, which involve our internal development operations and sales operations. We have not yet reached a clear conclusion. We believe that global sales of 5 million units are proof that this is a popular title," Capcom said.

"However, we believe that the new challenges we tackled at the development stage were unable to sufficiently appeal to users. In addition, we believe there was inadequate organizational collaboration across our entire company with regard to marketing, promotions, the creation of plans and other activities," the company added. "We will have to examine these results from several perspectives. We will reexamine our internal operating frameworks in order to identify areas that need to be improved concerning development as well as sales and administrative operations."

Capcom said earlier this week that despite Resident Evil 6 recording "brisk" sales of 4.5 million upon launch in October, the game ultimately "lost its momentum." The game was targeted to ship 7 million copies worldwide, but has fallen 2 million short of that mark. Capcom is now contemplating rebooting the series.

Resident Evil 6 received a polarizing critical reception upon launch for consoles last year. The game comes to PC on March 22.

I really doubt marketing affected the quality of this product. It barely escapes mediocrity thanks to inconsistency mixed with good new ideas, like the fun combat system and dubious pacing.

The game is actually pretty good. Similar to Resi 5 but I like the multiple storylines. Resi 4 was better than the previous Resi games, so the general style change was not bad. The game is a challenge on No Hope especially if you are not a p*ssy and you actually attempt for the first time on that difficulty setting.

I wouldn't mind a return to the old school horror dimension but meh, Resi 6 is definitely worth £20.

The thing is that unfortunately it just doesn't work anymore nowadays. Not like survival-horror, at least. The whole "zombies and infection" concept lost its frightening meaning and now it's seen just like a fancier background to action movies/games. Unless they do it old-school style like the first games (which wouldn't work, considering how long the plot in RE developed, forcing zombies and closed locations at this point would only delay even more the storyline), there is no way Capcom will make amends, so they should end this story with a GREAT action-oriented game (I'm not informed about this reboot thing yet so I don't know) and a well-solved plot.

I believe a lot of the hate stems from from people being hung-up on the word "Resident" and how they feel it's not an RE game if it doesnt take place in some boogie-man infested haunted house.

It's called BIOHAZARD in Japan and it's Capcom's fault for thinking that word was too advanced for US/EU.

@BuggyTime I'm going to have to disagree with that. While that may represent a fraction of dissenters from RE's opinion, it isn't what makes people who hated the game... hate the game. A lot of these dissenters are mad because the game was simply not a good game to them, and the result was the anger. It had nothing to do with the fact it was called "Biohazard"; who gives a damn about the name of the title if the game plays how you want it to. If you took the time to read some of the things dissenters on GameFAQs on the RE6 boards, you'd notice a sharp divide between traditionalists, those who love this game, and progressives.

Basically, the traditionalists hate the game because it was lacking in a "Survival-Horror" element, meaning that the game was losing the "item conservation" idea, the protagonists were pretty much becoming demi-gods, and the difficulty overall became lackluster. Those who love this game say that the traditionalists are "trolls" or "haters", and can't enjoy the newer games because of them being "ludites" (an ignorant use of the term). And progressives may have varrying opinions on RE as a franchise, but all agree the game needs to move in a new direction, meaning it needs a reboot because the old stuff is not really working anymore.

Wow normally I'd hate the fact that developers would release a game for PC way past its console release date, but this is an exception. I thank you Capcom on behalf of all PC gamers, now we know not to buy this sad installment to the RE franchise.

If you feel this way, I'm not sure why you need to voice your opinion at all. All you are doing is making yourself look like an idiot, because most everyone else looking at this actually likes Resident Evil as a franchise, whether they like the old or the new Resident Evil games, and they see a distinct difference between other zombie franchises.

@itchyflop you obviously haven't played any of the recent zombie games! how can you say that Dead Island, Dead Rising (1 and 2), Left 4 Dead (1 and 2) and Resident Evil are all the same? Yeah, Capcom screwed up the RE franchise, but that's not to say zombie games are all the same!

Well Capcom your marketing and promotion division did a great job, they were able to get 5million people to buy a very subpar game before word of mouth saved the other 2 million. I will guarantee you one thing capcom the next resident evil will not have half as many pre orders or reserves as 6 did. Many will now take a wait and see approach and considering that many publishers make most of their money during that first week - resident evil reboot will have to be one hell of a fine game.

I will not bother going into all the details of RE6 post-mortem as many critics and forums like this have done so well. RE needs to go back to its roots: story- driven suspense, smart set pieces, puzzles and customization, and please who ever keeps telling you action button time sequences is what more of what we want are crazy! Oh and please bring back really great and memorable bad guys, the most feared thing in RE6 was the active time event button sequences.

Despite what the more dramatic people in the comments below might say, the problem isn't the game being crap. The problem is that resident evil, as good as the games are, just isn't resident evil anymore, at least not as we once knew it.

The entire horror genre is no longer what it once was. There's no actual fear in these games anymore, just action action ACTION, all the time. You want resident evil to get back to it's old heights? Make it a bloomin horror game again, not just an action shooter that's a bit creepy.

So Capcom actually had no clue to why the Resident Evil series sucks now? Well here's some pointers, in RE6, I run, I killed, no zombies can ever hurt me, I'm freaking Rambo man, more ammos, more powers, and I will always had back-ups. This war is already won. But back in the year 2002, RE1 remake, I'm lost inside this freaking haunted house, a bunch of zombies are after me and I can't pin-point them with anything, I'm not freaking Rambo, I have limited ammos and some herbs, I have no back-ups, I feel like I'm in hell. This is a nightmare. Now compare an RE war to an RE nightmare. I prefer the RE nightmare.

I remeber going into Funcoland and buying the original Resident evil the day it came out in all its oversized case glory. That game blew me away. Then Resident evil 2 came out and that blew me away. Fast forward ahead to Resident evil 4 which is my favorite out of all the Resident Evil games, that game was so amazing, CAPCOM WHAT HAPPENED!!! How could you ruin the Franchisie, its almost like Capcom is taking a page out of Square Enix book and is like look what Square did to Final Fantasy lets do the same for Resident evil, lets change what made it so great.

@alenth I don't care who publishes a game. A good game is a good game. I've played about 70 PS3 games -- Resident Evil 6 is the worst PS3 game I've played. And that's not exaggeration based on what I expect from the series, or anything else. The game is just unplayable. It's just long cut scene after long cut scene with the occasional QTE thrown in to make sure you're still awake. Then when you actually have a chance to control something, you're forced down some stupid narrow corridor and the controls are all herky-jerky and crap.

Whoever was in charge of this game needs to be sacked.

So, given this thing called the internet and instant feedback from fans, they are still not able to figure out that problem was? That the game was a series of QTE followed by poor gameplay followed by, what I can only explain as, the awkward sexual union of Jean-Claude Van Damme and Michael Bay.

Promote the shit out of it by all means, but make sure you're at least promoting something worth promoting, not a turd of a game that's strayed far too far from the beaten track to be any good. I hated it and that's hard to say cos RE was the first game I bought with the PS1 and have always loved the franchise, I even pay good money to see them cack movies they insist on releasing. A reboot sounds like a plan, can't get much worse let's be honest

2012 was just not the year for the big video game publishers, Bioware lost with the ME3 ending fallout, Square Enix lost with FF13, Capcom with RE6, and THQ went bankrupt heres to hoping 2013 they all learn how to pull their heads out of there ases......... (Tho Capcom's already not looking so good)

@solidus2_1 Very true, but also at least ME3 and FF13-2 had very high to very good reviews from critics and gamers alike, but RE6 across the boards got terrible reviews by just about everyone not drinking capcom koolaide. The demo was terrible, glad I tried at a coworkers house for a few hours - all of the campaigns started out terrible and from what ive seen online ended that way also. Also props for gamespot here their review saved me 60$ as I was going down to the store that next week.

@senseless_dj They always get the promotional bit right. Then again, every high end developer does promotions correctly (*cough* EA's Madden). Did you check out the Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City trailer? That goes down as one of my favorite trailers of all time, no joke. I wish the game was even half as good.

It took control away from players constantly to show cutscenes.

You could spam melee to kill just about everything.

Enemy AI was borderline retarded.

Wasn't scary in the slightest.

Story was passable at its best, absolutely ridiculous at its worst.

Over-hyped worse than any game I have ever seen (and don't expect people to fall for that again if RE7 happens)

It's not simply the pandering to larger audiences. It's not the change from "survival horror". RE4 is critically acclaimed as one of the best the series had to offer. It's my FAVORITE Resident Evil game. Capcom managed to successfully evolve their franchise back then. An amazing feat if you ask me. RE4 is NOT survival horror, and the game is still being sold today. What made that game good was: Good graphics, suspenseful combat, good length, TONS OF WEAPONS to buy and upgrade, and awesome monsters.

The problem with RE6 isn't the lack of "survival horror" or it's "action focus"

RE6 took the formula from 4 and 5 and simply FUCKED IT UP. It's too damn dark, the camera is god awful, the melee hit detection is terrible and inaccurate, the combat scenarios have little to no thought to them, no weapon stores or upgrades, and awfully presented story... that does little to nothing to advance the established fan favorite characters. Instead we get one liners from Jake, whining from Pierce, and crying from Helena.

TLDR; It's like the rest of you said... it's simply a bad game that doesn't live up to the quality the series has been known for. Capcom and Resident Evil have not been able to keep up with the times.

Is that hard to figure out? Capcom tried to do too much RE6. They tried to please everyone. If games today are adding feature to appeal to broader audiences, RE6 took that notion to the Extreme. The game itself ended up suffering for it.

They made RE 6 too different from the past ones that people liked. RE 6 has a lot of cut-scenes and the hitting the right buttons during scenes feels lame. They made it so there are too many improbable circumstances. Like the worst is the guy who gets stuck in the neck with the syringe and becomes this huge evolving monster that can smash through moving trains and survive falling 20 stories into fire and keeps coming back again and again. Yet somehow their bullets affect him?! The game was made in a very odd way that rubs people the wrong way. The direction they went was all wrong.

Sometimes, the harder you pursue a certain thing, the less you get eventually. You want RE to be even more mainstream so hard, and you lose more audience. Doing things the way you want to would probably bring about real good luck.
