Resident Evil 6 suffered due to 'inadequate organizational collaboration'

Publisher says development "challenges" and poor efforts in marketing and promotion led to latest game coming up short.

Capcom has explained why it believes Resident Evil 6 came up short. The publisher said in a recent question and answer session that though shipments of 5 million copies means the game has been successful to a degree, development "challenges" and "inadequate organizational collaboration" led to the title performing under expectation.

No Caption Provided

"We are currently analyzing the causes, which involve our internal development operations and sales operations. We have not yet reached a clear conclusion. We believe that global sales of 5 million units are proof that this is a popular title," Capcom said.

"However, we believe that the new challenges we tackled at the development stage were unable to sufficiently appeal to users. In addition, we believe there was inadequate organizational collaboration across our entire company with regard to marketing, promotions, the creation of plans and other activities," the company added. "We will have to examine these results from several perspectives. We will reexamine our internal operating frameworks in order to identify areas that need to be improved concerning development as well as sales and administrative operations."

Capcom said earlier this week that despite Resident Evil 6 recording "brisk" sales of 4.5 million upon launch in October, the game ultimately "lost its momentum." The game was targeted to ship 7 million copies worldwide, but has fallen 2 million short of that mark. Capcom is now contemplating rebooting the series.

Resident Evil 6 received a polarizing critical reception upon launch for consoles last year. The game comes to PC on March 22.

This is what happens when CEO's dont even play the games they are marketing.

RE 6 was a dud, and they don't even have a clue. Pathetic.

So the game sold as much as expected at launch but suddenly halted and Capcom is looking at a lack of advertising. How can that be the sales were as expected at first. When people actually played it and got out the game wasnt up to par with RE4 or RE5 that was when people stopped buying RE6. The camera was too close the menu is difficult to navigate survivors are introduced to get killed not that you care you never learn anything about them. The game goes from an action set piece to small open area doted by enemies with no transition. In the process of making new monsters the monsters just got more goofy in every game.

RE6 doesnt know what it wants to be!!!

now, capcom it's likely time you had a long sit down, cup of tea and a chat with us users. The reason the game wasn’t received well was nothing to do with bad marketing. It was because the game you released, the game for which you brought forward the release date by a month and that found its way, in finished form into peoples hands a month before even that! wasn’t any good.

The reason a game sells 5 million is because people buy before they know what its like. Based on assumptions, previews and past editions.

You marketed it fine, the problem is you marketed a turd and no matter what wrapping you put it in, it's still going to be a warm and mushy turd when you open the wrapper.

Tip for the future. Make a good game. Simple.

Although if the resident evil films are anything to go by most people will just keep coming back for turds long after your first stinker.

@Uruca @Suikogaiden Not true in some cases (Bayonetta , Vanquish, etc.) True in some cases (Mass Effect, Uncharted series, etc.) There're more than just good game to determine the sell.

The only one sentence that really enlightened me is

"Capcom is now contemplating rebooting the series."

I hope this mean RE 2 & 3 HD remake. (^_^)

RE6 was bad because of garbage design decisions and a mindset in making games cater to larger audiences, in which the latter fails EVERY. GODDAMN. TIME. Just make good freaking games; stop worrying about the masses.

It's simple, after RE4 the creator of the series left.. and so did the survival horror aspect of the series along with him.

I played through 6 and it was a competent game. Yet it somehow felt soulless and forgettable. I am not sure if that has anything to do with the sum of its parts or with specific issues I had, such as the abandonment of camp feel or the inconsistencies in the campaign. Regardless, I know that few developers have attempted to resurrect that classic Silent Hill/ RE/ Alone in the Dark feel, and with Capcom putting their own legacy behind them, I'm certain that it will emerge once again in some sort of indie games renaissance; a renaissance where small independent developers attempt to emulate that classic RE1 feel with their own IPs. There is the last bastion of hope for survival horror fans.

Jesus ****, making a good game IT'S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE!

They still can't see past the money. "Oh the game didn't sell as expected". They don't even give a shit if the game is good or not. They just care about the sales.

Instead of saying "We didn't sell enough copies" say something like "OUR GAME SUCKED, WE FIRED THE TEAM INVOLVED AND HIRED SOMEONE THAT WILL DO BETTER".

To make good art, you need an artist, not a fucking sales manager.

A next-gen Resident Evil Revelations type game with a bit more emphasis on classic horror survival would appeal to me. The Madden / MMS / FPS casual market are happy with 3 or 4 big games a year that are probably production line sequels anyway. Why ruin the franchises mechanics and ignore its fundamentals trying to capture those people anyway?

The game was rubbish. Faulty gameplay, glitches, zero horror and a cliched campaign is what slowed your sales not "inadequate organizational collaboration." Just admit you stuffed up again Capcom move on and bring back a game similiar to the original Resident Evils, cause they were good games. Also to the people who compare RE6 to CoD, you are idiots this game does not resemble CoD at all, so go away, no one likes you.

thats funny, i didnt find much wrong with the game. sure it deviated from the series but it was still fun as hell in co-op. the haters that always cry about it usually mention how the series has strayed from its roots. sure it has and im not a big fan of that either, but im not gonna let that stop me from enjoying a game. in this generation of consoles, re6 is my 4th most played game at 629 hours and i dont regret a minute of it. many people dont mention how much they love the game on here because they honestly dont wanna hear the whining from all the haters but i dont let that stop me. dont be too hard on yourselves guys, you did a great job with re6.

This should'nt be a mystery; then again Capcom has gone and been insane for a while now. They are NOT the juggernaught company they once were...RE6 and RE5 were COD wannabe's, THAT was the main problem right there, not to mention being saturated in those ''enjoyable'' QTE's. RE has fallen from grace, in my opinion, it is no longer a surival horror 'must have' but now a clone of an overaited action game. That is just a fact.(I know I'll be ticking off little teen boy's,haten' on their COD, but it's just the way it is!)

I didn't play the actual game myself just the demo but judging by it maybe it was more to do with the fact that it felt too similar to resident evil 5, it tried to tell too many stories and involve too many characters at the one time instead of having one interesting story, it lacked atmosphere, it wasn't scary, it lacked originality, quick time events all over the place which ruins any game. "inadequate organizational collaboration"wasn't their main problem. I'll still pick it up in the bargain bin though probably. The demo that I played of it didn't grab my interest though unfortunately and there were a lot of much better games out so I didn't bother with it.

They got lucky with the sales it did manage to sell. It's time to go back and look at what was working in their favor and what wasn't. Resident Evil 4/5 weren't bad. Maybe start there and make a better game?

it sold a lot at launch so marketing worked, after the reviews and people realizing it was broken and not clearly as a good as other resident evils the sales when down. that happens when capcom tries to make profit with a single game releasing a bunch of titles it short time spam, teh same thing happened with megaman in ths ps2 time

@HipHopBeats "Who wants to play a game that appeals to everybody?"

Nintendo would look at the sales of their Mario franchise games, Wii Sports, etc, and answer, "a ton of people do."

I don't think marketing and promotion had anything to do with the weak sales Capcom. You developed a bad game and consumers decided to show their disapproval by not purchasing the game. This needs to happen more often.

Seriously I'd love to hear what those marketing guys think of this excuse. I'd quit. Blame the failure of a mediocre game on my promotional skills? Shite cannot be made to look like gold, only shiny shite

5 million actually makes it one of the better selling RE games. I love a massive title but things need to be scaled back when they're at a point where "only" being one of the best selling games in the franchise is a mild failure.

I agree with some of the comments made below. In Capcom's attempt to broaden the fan base to appeal to everybody in RE6. They ended up with a game that appealed to nobody.

RE4: press buttons during cutscene or YOU WILL DIE (normally it surprises you)

RE6: press butons during cutscenes to climb rope, to open door, to jump, to control a chopper, etc or YOU WILL HAVE ANOTHER TRY to climb rope, to open door, to control a chopper, etc...

IF you know Keiji Inafune .He is the right man who put his art on every game that you love and one of the Capcom co-founders with a thick basement and columns and he did some interviews of capcom current situation that let him break Megaman Franchise for good reasons .

Wow, they really are utterly delusional, they have no idea they messed it up and didn't give the fans what they wanted, they are blaming it on all the wrong things. Ignorance is bliss.
