Respawn's first game an always-online Xbox 720 exclusive?

Sources reveal details on first game from studio founded by Call of Duty creators; will reportedly be multiplayer-focused online shooter described as battle of Davids and Goliaths.

The first information about Respawn Entertainment's debut effort may have been exposed. Several sources have told Kotaku that the studio's first game will be a multiplayer-focused, always-online Xbox 720 exclusive. A version may also release for Xbox 360, but iterations for PlayStation and Nintendo consoles are not in the cards, one source said.

Call of Duty studio Infinity Ward founders Jason West and Vince Zampella created Respawn Entertainment in 2010 after Activision fired them, claiming insubordination. The studio's first game will be published by Activision rival Electronic Arts.

The game is reportedly a future-set online multiplayer shooter and was described as a battle of Davids and Goliaths. It is not clear if a traditional single-player campaign will be included or if there will be any way to play the game offline.

"The Davids are heavily armed foot soldiers. The Goliaths are giant exoskeletons--Titans--that these soldiers can pilot. These Titans are big, mech-style walkers that move with an agility not seen in games like Mechwarrior or Steel Battalion," Kotaku writes.

Respawn Entertainment recently filed a trademark application for the name "Titan," suggesting this may be the title of the company's first game.

The new game is reportedly being made on a modified version of Valve's Source engine and not internal technology from Electronic Arts like Frostbite, which powers the Battlefield series, among others. Respawn is handling development of the Xbox 720 version, one source said, noting the company is in the process of choosing another studio to make the Xbox 360 version.

Neither Respawn nor EA could be reached for comment. A Microsoft representative said, "We do not comment on rumors or speculation. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform, but we don’t have anything further to share at this time."

Gamers may not have long to wait to learn official details about Respawn's first game. If the game is in fact an next Xbox exclusive, Microsoft may choose to show it off during the platform's reveal event on May 21.

If the game is a no-show at Microsoft's event, it will likely be unveiled just weeks later. Zampella said last month that Respawn will attend the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo in June, adding "I have no intention of showing up empty-handed!"

West has since left the company to take care of "family issues."

Respawn's first title was previously hinted to be, by EA Labels president Frank Gibeau, a first-person science-fiction shooter. It may support 3D.

Always-online, multiplayer focused and Electronic Arts in the same article? Why am I not suprised... like, at all? I'm surprised that they haven't mentioned a "premium" subscription or exclusive pre-order DLC (disc locked content) yet.

@TrueGB @Redsyrup @toshineon I'm sick of how linear these games have become. On rails corridor shooters are better left to light guns.

I dont understand how anyone can interpret this as "bas news". Unless you actually never play FPS' online, in which case.... where have you been the past 15 years?

Otherwise, this should come as welcome news. A next-gen FPS... and people are complaining?

I will never understand that.

@TrueGB @malokevi If you've played an FPS on an 8th generation console (barring the Wii U), then I will eat my hat.

I understand the frustration. More variety would be nice. And, realistically, there are plenty of alternatives... they just aren't as fun as FPSs.

If its bad news because its been a similar formula for 15 years, then I still don't understand. It works. FPSs are awesome, and for good reason. Killing people online is fun as anything. If you can come up with something better, I bet EA is willing to listen.

I wouldn't be surprised if all the people who complain are hypocrites, and end up playing all of these games that they so disparage with their online persona.

@Good-Smurf @malokevi @the_requiem I don't have to ask every person... lol. People don't just mindlessly play games they hate. Free will... yah kno?

"got shoved on the industry".

OIC, so you say that from Goldeneye and Quake to BF3 and COD that its all just been a big sham by the industry? They are just making people play these games, cheating them because they have to buy it?

Sounds like fallacious reasoning, at best...

FPS' have evolved into an industry staple, for good reason. They are fun.

@Chronologo

Actually, it does. You can say "see, it works for you, not for others", but as soon as you realize that thousands upon thousands of people are playing these games, thats where you're alleged "reasoning" falls apart. The FPS genre is working for more people than any other genre... and will continue to do so in the foreseeable future.

People who deny that are kidding themselves, trolling, or blowing smoke.

@malokevi @the_requiem

They got shoved by the industry and people really jumped into anything that got the most people playing it just that simple and that also doesn't mean they like it,do you actually asked every one of them that they like the game?

After Battlefield 3 it's going to be very hard for me to picked another FPS (And i'm looking at you DICE)

Super duper high definition textures and 4 behind the name is not enough to sell your product ok they going to rip off millions of people a month after release that's for sure.

FPS genre is dying at least in its core it sells but that only tell half the story.

Multiplayer-only FPS I'll pass it will be like a ferrari with no battery when i needed most.

@malokevi @the_requiem of course the servers would be with happy ppl, why would I play I game to get angry?? those ppl have been playing that game for a long time mostly, I'm tired of that formula, hence you won't see mee con any BF servers, that first paragraph you wrote doesn't make your point stronger

@the_requiem @malokevi It works for others.

I just played a few games of Halo and a game of Battlefield, and the servers were filled with thousands of happy players. How do you explain that?

It just doesn't work for people who come on Gamespot and complain for no particularly good reason.

When it comes to Battlefield, everyone complains about the SP and says that Dice should focus its efforts on the Multiplayer, yet for this game people are complaining about the fact that its a mutiplayer-only shooter.

Whats with the double standard?

Oh, thats right, the words "xbox 720", "always Online" and "exclusive" appear in the article title. Ohhh nooooes, an online-only shooter, everybody complain!

On top of all that, we haven't even seen the game yet! I see the words "COD clone"... based on what, exactly? The backgrounds of the development team? Does anyone actually know anything about this game besides that it's an online shooter, or are you guys just blowing smoke?

@malokevi See, it works for you, not for others. I haven't played an online console FPS this gen or previous [unless count Borderlands]. I still play a game of CS every now and then though.

@malokevi gamer fatigue you aren't seeing that? people complaining about the same thing and still having to be forced the same bs over and over, people are getting really tired of it, they are also tired with backhanded business models that never help the customer and always hurt them instead, DRM microtransactions, free to pay but pay to win or free to play but pay to enjoy, these models all fucking suck, and the fact you defend the game is sad, its' being published by EA, like deadspace was published by ea before they ruined it, like madden was published for ea until they ruined it, like crysis was published by ea until they ruined it, like simcity was published by EA until they ruined it, do you not see a trend, but again your just not seeing what the mass is starting to understand, which is it isn't worth buying this game when a much better one will be coming out.

It's not a rumor cause Orth and 5 Devs have basically confirmed the Always-Online 720. You think if it wasn't true Micro$hit would of said something already. Your just too stupid to believe what it Fact.

@TrueGB @JayQproductions either way, if the console does or not there are still going to be games on the PS4 that require an always online internet connection also like Bungie's Destiny.

@TrueGB @ferrarimanf355 @mariokart64fan No, they didn't. The next Xbox will more than likely leave it to the publishers just like the PS4. There will be games on both the next Xbox and the PS4 that require an always online connection to the internet. The console itself does not require a constant internet connection but some games and features might.

Okay first of all I dunno why people complain about always online if this article regards an "online multiplayer shooter" lol you will need a internet connection (I recommend a stable internet connection) to enjoy one of those duh. Second its Vince Zampella and Jason West those two dudes were the driving force behind the awesome CoDs like CoD 1-2 and the best one CoD4MW so I would prefer a game from those two guys any day over the copy paste jobs after they left IW. And third who cares if its Xbox exclusive as there is still PC gaming around and BF4 coming up, so yeah :D

Articles like this one generate alot of buzz, fact or bullshit the idea of an always online concept is just stupid. Changing the way of the industry that I've grown up with isn't always welcomed. Some change is good and needed, but this is just ignorant. It opens up the door for other well crafted schemes from the top execs to further the size of their wallets.

@FireWolfRage If it's online it's not really a big issue. It's multiplayer focused, most of the game happens online, I can deal with always online for this. Now if you tell me that it requires a subscription fee because it's always online, then **** it.

@Total_mischief @FireWolfRage well you have to pay for xbl so there is that but then paying for server sub fees... yeah, thats double dipping... errr technically its triple dipping.
