Revealed: Nvidia's Next Flagship Graphics Card, the GTX 980Ti

New GeForce GPU carries 6GB of memory, costs $650.

909 Comments

Nvidia has divulged new details of its GeForce 980Ti, the latest addition to its line of premium-priced graphics cards.

Starting at $650 (and bundled with a copy of Batman: Arkham Knight), the GTX 980Ti carries six gigabytes of GDDR5 memory. That's about half the capacity of Nvidia's $1000 Titan X graphics card, but Nvidia believes the 980Ti can perform to a similar standard at about two-thirds of the price.

A gallery below offers a closer look at the new GPU.

Much like with the Titan X, the 980Ti has a 336GB/s maximum bandwidth. Its display outputs are 1x HDMI, 1x DVI, and 3x DP, while it has two power connectors arranged as 1x 6pin and 1x 8pin.

Meanwhile, the GTX 980, due to its drop down the pecking order, will now be sold at $500.

Nvidia's new GeForce prices follow:

  • Titan X: $1000
  • 980 Ti: $650
  • 980: $500
  • 970: $330
  • 960: $200

Mark Aevermann, a spokesperson for Nvidia, told GameSpot that the GTX 980Ti was built with DirectX 12 features in mind.

"This is, by all rights, our flagship GeForce GTX GPU, built on the GM 200 chip," he said, "and we designed it for a lot of the top-end PC features, such as 4K, VR, and G-Sync. These are the things that this card excels at."

Look I've got a Nvidia card myself, but they have got to do a better job with price points. Consoles will continue to dominate when this is supposed to be a less expensive option.

Believe me, they know what they are doing.
I remember that I bought a GTX275 (G200, 2nd best Nvidia GPU like 980ti) for $200...

Today with $200 you cannot buy even the half of the 2nd best GPU's performance...

It isn't the best, you're right...but it far exceeds consoles. Put a $200 card into an off the shelf PC and 1080 @ 60fps High Res is standard.

@seanwil545@Coseniath@Knight_Rider_3K: I was always saying that the difference between an office PC and a gaming PC, is just the GPU. :)

Thats why people should really compare GPU prices to consoles, cause with PC you can do a lot more stuff than gaming...

Yeah, I've said that so many times, people just get really defensive over their consoles.

I have consoles as well, but there are some things beyond gaming that I just can't use a console for...like updating a Resume or ripping a Blu-Ray...VPN into the office.

@seanwil545@Coseniath@seanwil545: I use my rig for art photo and video editing so yeah its worth it to keep higher end stuff in it but you really can just drop a 960 or a 280x into a cheap PC and have some fun

@Knight_Rider_3K@Coseniath@seanwil545: Not really.

You can play witcher 3 at 60FPS with any i3.

Well to be honest, this is game depended.

But with DX12 coming...

Consoles will continue to exist because console gamers are all about plug-&-play.

A R9 280 or GTX 960 can both be had for less than $200.

A new card means the older ones will likely go down in price, especially once AMD releases their new card.

The picture is much larger than just the 980Ti @ $650. Personally, I'm going to keep my existing card a bit longer...seeing upgrading is purely optional.

@rarerichz: right now they are not amazing comparing a 290x to a 980 but when they realse the 300 line of cards AMD maybe will take the lead I hope they do. mostly for price drops but allso there is no 4k single GPU card out right now that can do 60 frames persecond on ultra.

even a Nvidia fanboy needs AMD compation to keep prices in check

Who can keep up with these card updates. Cards that become obsolete in 1-2 years. I mean look at the cards from 2 yrs ago - the 6xx series or 1-1.5 yrs ago with the 7xx series. No one really wants them. The 9xx are the rage but will be something else by year end.

I cannot keep paying $500+ for just one card updates nor $2000+ for high end gaming PCs every 2 yrs.

I hope they stagger the releases a bit more time out so people can extract more perf from the same cards and optimize it (like how the consoles get very optimized and great games as its life cycle progresses, I mean just look at Call of Duty 2005 and 2014 on same console or GTA V on PS3 at end of its life cycle, looks quite good actually considering the HW is from 2004-2005 for PS3). I need that level of optimization on my $500 video card on PC which takes time

@fanirama: How ?

The 660Ti is a very powerful card still. I mean I have a pretty equivalent card I imagine (the 270x), it's my new card and I'm very happy with it, I can play games much better than the PS4 in many cases, it will last me quite awhile. I think your just exaggerating.

@fanirama: Only a moron will upgrade every 2 yrs. Not all pc gamers upgrade with every upcoming card, only does who can, and are into overclocking just for the fun of it. I had for a little more than 5 years a Sapphire HD 6950 2 GB, and only two months ago I upgraded to a GTX 970 4 GB. Not to mention that I pay almost the same amount for both cards, $330.99

@fanirama: Yeap, you are right. Performance leaps in GPUs are huge:

From PCPerspective:

In this quick comparison with three games at 2560x1440, the GTX 980 Ti offers a 27-40% increase over the GTX 780 Ti card released in November of 2013 but essentially doubles the performance of the GeForce GTX 680 released in March of 2012.

So, is this the time where all the nvidia loyalists remind us that the titan actually a rendering/compute card and that's why they spent $350 premium?

It seems awfully early this year because nvidia usually gives titan adopters until November to formulate their rationalizations for paying a third more for super cool branding and an awesome cooler shroud.

@BravoOneActual: the titan x is marketing scheme, it's for people who has money to burn and it makes the 980ti an appealing option, it makes it a good deal, cause you get a "$1000" for $650, the 980ti doesn't have that good price to performance ratio, but if there is the titan x out there, that pushes people to the edge of buying one, even though most people have 1080p/60hz monitors and can't even utilise it and it's way overkill for it.

@BravoOneActual: I think anyone who went for a Titan X knew full well they were getting a poor price-to-performance ratio, essentially paying a premium for the privilege of being on the bleeding edge.

@BravoOneActual:

Well, To be fair, while an additional 6GBs of memory isn't perticulalry relevant right now, it does give the titan a longer life span down the road, than the 980ti, And 6gbs of memory is worth at least most of the price point difference.

and especially as a rendering card the additional memory is an absolute must have. Now, from a gaming standpoint 6GB's is plenty, and will give the card a plenty large enough life span. especially considering how well it does at 4k. But don't disregard the price and allure of the additional 6GB's of memory. I would assume however, that the chips are the ones that just didn't quite perform as well with the additional cores unlocked, and didn't fit their margin of error. Even though the performed exceptionally well with what they did have. Still outside of my budget though.

@Mr_BillGates: A 4k TV isn't 4k gaming ready either. TV's have bad response time, and the cheaper one's can't even accept 60fps, they are advertised as 60-200hz, but that is upscaled refresh rate, kinda like dynamic contrast, where they tell you it has a 1:1000000 contrast, but that is dynamic and static is just 1:1000 contrast, the cheaps 4k tv's will only accept 30fps at 4k, and even those that does 60fps can't fully utilise it cause they put HDMI on them, even HDMI 2.0 doesn't have the bandwidth for 4k@60fps with chroma 4.4.4, so you are sacrificing colour for resolution
