It beat out The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, and Pillars of Eternity for the honor.

Games were judged by a panel of Video Game Writers Caucus members and/or Writers Guild members from the video game field. Below are the official writing credits for Rise of the Tomb Raider:

Rise of the Tomb Raider:

  • Lead narrative designer: John Stafford
  • Narrative designer: Cameron Suey
  • Lead writer: Rhianna Pratchett
  • Additional writer: Philip Gelatt

Last year's winner was Naughty Dog's The Last of Us: Left Behind, written by Neil Druckmann. It beat out Alien: Isolation, Assassin's Creed Unity, and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag - Freedom Cry.

Rise of the Tomb Raider was released for Xbox One and Xbox 360 in November 2015. The PC edition arrived in January, while a PlayStation 4 version will come out later this year.

Beyond that, Square Enix has suggested a follow-up is also in the works.

Well first Witcher 3 (+) : Perfect main quest line, very good side quest(s) line(s), perfect character designs, not linear, open world (which i like is mostly, you feel there is a living world around you. Random encounters or events. Very good voice acting. Very good graphics and atmosphere. (-) : Poor fighting system( auto engage enemy makes you mad mostly puts you in a bad situation), there r some invisible walls randomly on the map. So conc. for me it's much much better then the previous witcher games.

Ok let's talk about Tomb raider :),

Most of young gamers and who only cares about visuals like including this site makes the new Tomb Raider is a master piece. Well i understand kid gamers not blaming them. But editors? :( C'mon!! i played the previous game of Tomb Raider ( Of Course i've played the original series of the game) was totally shit except visuals. Pls tell me in which game producers points the secret places in the game? If you mark the secret area to the players then what's the purpose of it. And when you enter to that place a msg pops up and say "congrats you find a secret". Are you kidding me? Puzzle? What puzzle? Ah they say " we have platform puzzles" really? It's quite obvious for players where to jump and see the path. Ai? ahahahhaha as i see in that game as well. Bullshit. And when i saw a multiplayer option in the menu i said oh my.

i really wonder why Eidos betray their Lara and all fans who like the original series. Yea yeah your answer is money right? But hey let me remind you, Tomb Raider to Tomb Raider 4, sold over 4 million copies. After that they start to going down. And don't ask me why :)

So conc. ? This is not a Tomb Raider game. This thing claims being a tomb Raider Game and uses Lara as a hooker. That' s all.

One way to look at it would be to judge dialogue given only by the main protagonist. Think about the mission where Geralt has to lure Dudu out of the crowd with a play. He's very flat, and doesn't have very many lines. It's a trait he exhibits throughout the game. Comparing Geralt and Lara directly, it becomes pretty clear why they would pick ROTR over W3.

Tomb Raider featured a "strong woman" and her "journey", of course it won.

Wow. I really want to know the criteria and content shown to make this determination. I get the feeling the judges made this choice based on the synopsis or a short series of clips and got confused by the Witcher or something. No way any one of them actually played through the games. There's more to video game writing than just line-to-line dialogue. TW3 built a world through lore and exposition, and allowed you to reshape the narrative and interpersonal relationships to your liking. ROTR had a strong lead, but the ancillary characters and world NPC's were complete throwaways with little to no development. IDK... I love both of them but this seems an objective failure on the part of the judges.

I played TW3, Pillars of Eternity and also ROTTR. There is no way in hell that that ROTTR should win an award like that. The year before The last of us won and before that Assassins creed: Liberation won. Both games with strong female characters, considering that, the reasons behind appear to be quite obvious and pathetic. Especially since I never even heard that Ass creed Liberation was supposed to be great storywise but everyone knows that it's the first one with a female lead - and she's also black. Just had to win -.- in the name of diversity and feminazism.

This is quite the achievment, seeing how well Witcher 3 is written. On the other hand, i do not find it that surprising, since all the good writing in the Witcher, was spent to side characters and quests, while the main story writing was quite bland and surprisinly sub par compared to the rest of the game.

But there's no way on earth that ROTTR outwrote characters like gaunter o'dim and the bloody baron.

@stelios: The Baron quest was part of the main story. So was the scene with Geralt and Ciri on the Isle of Mists. I don't see the "sub par" part here.

@musalala: hmmm, in rotr there are no Nazis, no father son relation, it's not set pre WW2, find destination is not in the middle east, it has female character being most of the time on her own, Indiana Jones did not have a bow......yeah a rip off t is not.

@Karmazyn: All of that is superficial. The basic plot is very similar.

Also "no father son relation"? The whole game is based around Lara trying to finish her father's work. Ok so one party in that situation is dead, but the relationship is still very much there.

I remember countless interviews, published in various gaming magazines, with Core Interactive - the British company which developed all the original Tomb Raider games - where the devs stated that Tomb Raider was very much inspired by Indiana Jones.

This doesn't take anything away from Tomb Raider, hell if people didn't pillage ideas from other things, entertainment in general would be pretty bland. There's nothing wrong with being influenced by something. I wouldn't say ROTR is a "rip off", but it definitely borrows heavily from other mediums and Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade is an obvious one.

@domiddian: I agree with you, but for arguments sake @musalala said the game is a rip-off, which it definitely isn't... there's a big difference between ripping something off and being inspired or influenced by it. Tomb Raider definitely has an Indiana Jones vibe at its core but it doesn't go much further than that imo. There are a trillion and one stories with father son/father daughter relationships so I don't think that's much to stand on.

Laura is always chasing after some kind of Mcguffin, much like Indy... but I mean that's the adventure genre in a nut shell though!

So out of all the nominations, the one least qualified to win...won.

Pillars of Eternity had fantastic writing throughout, and Witcher 3 was just incredible. But Tomb Raider? The game where half the dialogue consists of Lara's panting and huffing? Sure, let's give it to that.

Now to do the same on the definitive edition (my second play through of that game).

I don't know, but TW3 wasn't stellar not for its writing anyway. I haven't played Rise, so I have no real inkling on its story. However to me this is no different from the oscars. Its an award for those that like to have awards and have no real baring on the populace unless you give it baring.

@slappy54: Witcher 3 had some really good side quests and characters. but the rest of the game was just kind of...meh.

Good example is in the Hearts of stone DLC. I loved the villain in it but, other than that, the story just felt dull to me. the wedding part was especially boring to me, and this is coming from a guy who did every little thing in the Winter Palace mission in Dragon age inquisition

@slappy54: What are you talking about? What in my comment makes me a fanboy of anything. I specifically stated I hadn't played Rise. I didn't think that TW3 story was stellar. *shrugs* I don't think it was, is it better than Rise? I don't know I haven't played it to judge.

So I fail to see where I was a fanboy of any particular series. I felt TW3's story was ok but not great. It may very well have been the best story told this year, doesn't make it stellar. Just really says a lot about gaming today.

To be fair TW3 is not original material; its story, characters and setting are all based on Andrzej Sapkowski's work. Kind of like say the writers of the Harry Potter films getting a best writing award. weird

@Cruxis27: Not even close to being the same thing. TW3 may be based on existing characters and setting but the story was completely original. The writing and dialogue between characters was all original. I fail to see why their work wouldn`t be worth an award.

Even your Harry Potter argument is flawed. Just because it`s an adaption doesn`t mean the writers don`t deserve credit. It`s no easy feat adapting a big novel to a 2 hour movie.

@Ghidoran: Exactly, given that written and spoken dialogue are almost entirely different things! The Oscars celebrates BOTH adapted and original screenplays in separate categories - they're different beats to be sure, but adapting a movie screenplay from another source (e.g. novel, comic book, play) is definitely not easy.
