It beat out The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, and Pillars of Eternity for the honor.

Games were judged by a panel of Video Game Writers Caucus members and/or Writers Guild members from the video game field. Below are the official writing credits for Rise of the Tomb Raider:

Rise of the Tomb Raider:

  • Lead narrative designer: John Stafford
  • Narrative designer: Cameron Suey
  • Lead writer: Rhianna Pratchett
  • Additional writer: Philip Gelatt

Last year's winner was Naughty Dog's The Last of Us: Left Behind, written by Neil Druckmann. It beat out Alien: Isolation, Assassin's Creed Unity, and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag - Freedom Cry.

Rise of the Tomb Raider was released for Xbox One and Xbox 360 in November 2015. The PC edition arrived in January, while a PlayStation 4 version will come out later this year.

Beyond that, Square Enix has suggested a follow-up is also in the works.

The Witcher 3's writing isn't perfect, but it was clearly better written than RotTR.

@donedoof: no doubt, I mean rotr did some things right but the writing was not one if them. Especially when compared to w3 or pillars.

Good that Pillars didn't win IMO. Obsidian seemed to mix up lot of writing with good and compelling writing. There was a crapton of text... I remember almost nothing about it.

They should've included Hearts of Stone DLC for TW3, it was just fantastic in its storytelling and characters, even better than Bloody Baron questline.

The writing, as in things that are said by characters are written well (I don't remember ever cringing at a line that was said), and is backed up by good voice work, but when it comes to story, it's not that good.

@NTM23: Not cringing at something, and it being award material are just two completely different things.

@blutiger_engel: You do understand that I wasn't saying it deserved the award right? I just said I thought it was fine, though not worth it over the other contender's, like The Witcher 3. My point was that the story, which this award is basically for, was not nearly good enough to warrant the win, I just added that I thought the voice work and writing (not story in that case), was fine (and I should add again, that 'fine' is not good enough to win in the voice work/dialogue category either, if it were separate). I think you misunderstood my comment, because in no way was I saying the game deserved to win the award, but quite the opposite. That said, it doesn't really bother me; it doesn't really matter that much.

@NTM23: What? The acting is laughably bad, with only Lara herself being average at best.

@billzihang: Regardless, acting isn't writing, and the award was for writing.

@billzihang: I thought it was fine. Not exceptional, but not bad. In the first game it was kind of bad; they made huge strides with two in that department, from barely tolerable, to decent.

Rise had a mediocre plot, I am really struggling to see how it won an award for story vs other games that people actually praised when it came to story, is it really a game you will look back on 2 years from now and think "boy, what a good story"?

It's also pretty sad to see people insulting others for voicing there opinion that they thought the Witcher had a better plot and hypocritically calling them fanboys.

@gengisgame: Is this an award for story? It says "writing", which isn't just about the story.

@Keitha313: You may actually get people who say "but that's not true" if one of the creators hadn't actually said they wanted to remove this idea that Lara is a sex symbol, the thing that made her famous and the reason why they even had a chance to make this game.

And here i thought R6 Siege would have gotten the award, there are terrorist guys, kill the terrorist guys, what it lacks in depth it makes up for in delightful clarity

The Witcher 3 overall had an extremely weak story, with the exception of the Bloody Baron questline which was very memorable for me mainly because of the superb voice acting and well written dialogue for the Baron but that's about as far as it goes. The overall story was average on so many levels it wasn't funny. I haven't played Tomb Raider as yet, being a PS4 owner, but I am glad it won. Of the games I personally played, I'd give it to Fallout 4.

Flawless logic. You were right about one thing though, the Bloody Baron questline was better than anything in Tomb Raider, not every part of the story was perfect, but it was miles better than Tomb Raider lol.

@bluefox755: Perfectly flawless logic indeed, thank you! Crystal Dynamics do a great job in game development and deserve it, I'm happy for them. I'm also happy pathetic little Witcher fanboys are so angry. So yes, I am glad it won.

@Salt_AU:

Horse shit. The Witcher series has been the best thing to happen to fantasy in years. I will concede the main story gets weak in the last part - the previous Witcher games have stronger main narratives - but compared to anything else in the genre, it's fucking Shakespeare. And where it shines, it does it better than anything else. I don't know of any other game that tackled the plight of ordinary people caught up in the midst of war like Witcher 3 has.

@Salt_AU: Well, I can agree with you that the main story wasn't the best in TW3, but this is award for Writing in videogames in 2015.. not just for the main story - TW3 has one of the best, if not the best side missions in RPG history ... not for gameplay, because of the dialogs scenes, because of the human stories every one NPC has to offer, the interactions between characters, great world building, etc.. and the story mission has great moments too - scenes between Geralt and Vesemir, between Geralt and Yen or Triss and most importatnly great emontional scenes with Ciri + Ciri alone is a fantastic character + battle at Kear Morhen and what follows right after that + I think it's refreshing that a story in a fantasy RPG isn't about saving the world by the main hero/character controlled by the player (miles better than the somewhat similar story in DA2), the main story of TW3 is the story about relantionship between a father and a daughter and I think they made fantastic job at this..

The main problems in the main story are just that there are too many moments of : Geralt goes to some place where Ciri could have been but he has missed here just by a inch, so the searching for Ciri continues, etc. + the main antagonists in the story are not enough flesh out in TW3 - they were pretty good in TW1+TW2.. but apart from this problems, the main story in made by details and there are a ton of great little details that make even the main story really good

Plus when you mix it with all the side missions, where there are more great moments, not just Blood Baron - in fact, I liked many side quests (and some monster hunts) more than his story

I think TW3 deserves in my opinion this award more than TR - Pillars of Eternity deserves this award too much more than TR
