It beat out The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, and Pillars of Eternity for the honor.

Games were judged by a panel of Video Game Writers Caucus members and/or Writers Guild members from the video game field. Below are the official writing credits for Rise of the Tomb Raider:

Rise of the Tomb Raider:

  • Lead narrative designer: John Stafford
  • Narrative designer: Cameron Suey
  • Lead writer: Rhianna Pratchett
  • Additional writer: Philip Gelatt

Last year's winner was Naughty Dog's The Last of Us: Left Behind, written by Neil Druckmann. It beat out Alien: Isolation, Assassin's Creed Unity, and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag - Freedom Cry.

Rise of the Tomb Raider was released for Xbox One and Xbox 360 in November 2015. The PC edition arrived in January, while a PlayStation 4 version will come out later this year.

Beyond that, Square Enix has suggested a follow-up is also in the works.

I play both Witcher 3 and Rise of the Tomb Raider on PC but Witcher 3 had a stronger storytelling, great character development, a great open-world, and most of all, CDPR was the most honest respectful developers that deserve more credit while SE doesn't.

Witcher 3 should have won, not Rise of the Tomb Raider. Don't get me wrong, Rise of the Tomb Raider was really enjoyable but I just don't see how it did better then Witcher 3, I just don't get it?

@davillain-: Witcher's strong storytelling:

Ciri is "lost".

You go to Town A to find Ciri.

You just missed her, and found out she is in Town B.

You go to Town B to find Ciri.

You just missed her, and found out she is in Town C.

You go to Town C to find Ciri.

You just missed her, and found out she is in town D.

You go to Town D to find Ciri.

etc.

The most engaging story ever.

@notchedbandit: Try harder dude. Any single quest in Witcher is better than that, let alone the whole game taken together.

@notchedbandit:

TombRaider story telling:

There is a myth about lost artefact

You need to find artefact

You need to kill enemies who also pursuit the same artefact.

GG, nothing been changed since 1996

@notchedbandit: What a stupid condensation and 'crudification' of a plot.

You can do that with any story, literally.

Jurassic Park: Some people went to an island and got eaten by some dinosaurs, and they escaped.

Tomb Raider: Some woman goes to places, and shoots people and they shoot back.

It's the DETAILS that make a story you utter tool, not the most basic description of events.

@billzihang: Ok, let's forget about the story, which was cheesy as ****. What about the gameplay? There is a huge open world, but ALL of it is copy-paste. Same tree, same rock, same hill, same NPC and the same wooden building and interiors. While Fallout 4 and Dragon Age Inquisition had a shit ton of flaws, at least the environments were diverse and fun to explore. You got to see interesting things around the world, and not the same crap all over.

Witcher 3 also gives the illusion that it's an open world game, while it's as linear as ****. You are forced to take a particular path, or you... die. And the combat... Ohhh the combat.... What a joke. What a fucking shite combat. Anyone who enjoyed Witcher 3's combat, must've never played any other RPG's before.

THIS game got GOTY almost everywhere. THIS is what gamers want these days. Developers don't even have to try, because you gamers are satisfied with the biggest turd releases.

What an odd award for it to receive. Whilst proficient in a Hollywood blockbuster sense the actual story paper thin. It's saving grace is the characterisation of Lara and the villains, which is very good. Too bad the side characters are still nothing to shout about.

Nothing against the game mind you - absolutely brilliant in every sense.

Loved the game, just finished yesterday but an award for writing, wtf!

Pillars of Eternity and the Witcher 3 were 1000x better...is it April?

This is surprising to me because I skipped this game because the reboots writing was terrible.

I find it hard to believe that the writing made that dramatic an improvement from one game to the next. The gameplay was fine but the story was a joke in the first one.

I guess I'll find out when I clear my backlog.

Seriously? This is a mess of writing...a flat story and unattractive characters...the only thing i like was exploring for tombs...even if the game remember me it was a tomb near by every time. Metal gear V had better writing than this...

The other nominees weren't exactly amazing, so I can see Tomb Raider winning out of all those.

Nice joke. Did it also win an award for being a forgotten game since the first week it came out on X1? I think it did.

The writing is so good that the first 5 hours are the most boring thing I've ever experienced from the Tomb Raider franchise and prevents me from playing it due to how bad it is.

Lol these awards.

The writing in Rise of the Tomb Raider is B-movie tier, and while The Witcher 3 isn't an amazing game, it's writing is definitely its strongest asset and deserves far more recognition than a shitty Uncharted knockoff.

@Prats1993: Witcher 3 isn't an amazing game? Hmmm... many, many people I believe have a very different opinion that you .. which of course doesn't mean your own is wrong, but the way you wrote it it felt like your opinion is a fact - which it obviously isn't

Haha, well alright.

I'm playing Tomb Raider at the moment and while it's decent fun it isn't exactly ground breaking in terms of writing.

Apparently the writer's guild and I have VERY different definitions of what a good story is. Rise of the Tomb Raider does not deserve this award.

Even though this game is technically very strong, I stopped playing half-way through specifically because of the poor writing. Witcher 3 had some of the best game writing of all time.

Hmm. I've played both TW3 and the latest TR, but I didn't find the story/writing of TR to be that outstanding. Playing TW3 I felt totally immersed in the stories that were told, and many side stories/plots I can still recall with clarity. Playing TR, the story was... good, but nothing out of the ordinary, and somewhat forgettable.

At the end of the day, I guess it's down to personal preference and opinion though.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is a great game, but an award winning story? Come on.

As an action adventure it deserves a lot of praise, but as is so often the case, action adventures often have rather predictable and simple stories.

Really? The game was awesome, but the story/plot was utterly mediocre. Thought the storylines in The Witcher 3 were far superior. Oh well, to each their own.
