Sega to Fans: "Help Us Make Our Games Better"

Take this survey.

Sega wants to make better games and it needs your help. The Japanese publisher behind Sonic and Total War today launched a survey asking fans to "Help us make our games better."

No Caption Provided

The in-depth survey (take it here) asks you about console ownership history, your top three games across all platforms, your top genres, and your favorite Sega games, among other things. It also asks about your preferences and interest in mobile games; if you say you're not interested, Sega wants to know why.

There is also a question (below) that asks you about Sega overall, specifically how you would rate them. It even asks what three adjectives you would use to describe the company.

This survey comes after Sega management frankly admitted that the company had somewhat lost its way.

"Sega in the '90s was known for its brand, but after that, we've lost trust, and we're left with nothing but reputation," Sega games CEO Haruki Satomi said last summer. "We'd like to win back the trust and become a brand once again."

It appears this new survey is part of Sega's plans to get back in the good graces of fans.

2016 is the 25th anniversary of one of Sega's crown jewel, Sonic the Hedgehog. Sega is celebrating by giving the brand a new logo, while it's rumored that a new entry in the series may also be in the works.

Listen SEGA put me in charge and we will make a lot of cash together lol. I'd start by getting a new Alien isolation out there if I were you though.

It's not the type of games you make, it's HOW you've been making them. I haven't taken the survey yet, but I suspect it is also misplaced - it sounds like it asks about genres and platforms, when they should be asking for very detailed feedback on WHAT was wrong with their recent attempts at games of type XYZ. Take Sonic as the most glaring example - it sounds like they want to know if we want to see more platformers and on what platform, but that's looking in the wrong place. It's fair to say there's a market for platformers on various platforms (Sony, MS, and Nintendo show this). What they should be doing is really THINKING about what was bad with their own personal attempts to make platformers.

@Burning_Cactus: Or, you know, just re-release it to Wii U and PC, and watch the cash flow in.

The time they made the best games was right before they dropped from the hardware market. Almost every Dreamcast game was a must-have. Such a shame.

I think they should stick to the simple games of the past, on iOS and Android; maybe the occasional 3DS game. Those games they can do. AAA games for consoles are no their thing.

@wretch1d: Love that series too (the old ones), but that's a Namco franchise.

@wretch1d: We tried that once before and look what we got.

I'd rather them sell that IP to someone who can handle it better, at this point.

In resume, they want to know if they should go mobile or not, although they are currently doing that already.

They need to revive some of their old series: Panzer Dragoon (Saga), Phantasy Star (not Online), Columns, Toe Jam and Earl, Space Channel 5, Shining Force, etc

They should get back into hardware. At this point I'd sooner buy a new overly ambitious Sega console than Nintendo's always-2-steps-behind consoles. And the Genesis still is one of the coolest looking consoles today.

@InYourMouf: Funny jokes, while Nintendo is always ahead of the game in terms of innovation and technology, but go ahead and tell me more about your needs for shiny graphics.

I'm listening.

It shows a level of self awareness that is commendable, hope it has a positive reflection on their next games.

Oh, it's one of THOSE types of surveys. You never see an answer like "get better talent". It's just a lot of fluff questions. It's the equivalent of a sports team asking you if you like hotdogs. If a lot of people say they like hotdogs...OMG! We can sell more tickets if we sell more hotdogs because the fans like hotdogs!

@Brettsky128: Yeah, I just did the survey and I saw those, and that was nice, but overall it felt more like a market identifier survey rather than an honest attempt at identifying their weaknesses. I got a fair number of questions asking me why I didn't game on mobiles. Clearly they just want to find the next market to throw their games at. Sega continues to show their lack of marketing ability.

That said, if you could use a mobile device like a console-connect mobile to a TV, plug in a controller, then run the game-that would change my opinion of them.

Sega...it will be really hard to improve on the quality of your games coz almost all of the talented teams behind your greatest games left you after the Dreamcast died.

@sladakrobot: Which is why they likely should just become an IP Holdings company and contract out the actual development to talented developers.

As someone who never was a console gamer, I actually have a fonder view of Sega in recent times.

When all the other kids have a Mega Drive, I had an Amiga.
