Sexually Suggestive Dialogue Removed for DMC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition

Ninja Theory says it altered the opening cinematic to improve pacing and because "we didn't like the line."

People who pick up the Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition on Tuesday may notice that a scene from the 2013 original game has been altered for the new version to remove some sexually suggestive dialogue.

No Caption Provided

During a early cut-scene, main antagonist Mundus is outlining his nefarious plans with his demon mistress Lilith. In the original game, the scene plays out like this.

Mundus: "Soon I will own everything worth owning. I will control the world through debt. I have absolute power."

Lilith: "The world is at last your bitch. As am I. Nothing left but to grab it by the hair, bend it over over, and f..."

The Definitive Edition version, however, keeps Mundus' line intact, but shortens Lilith's to chop off the suggestive bit.

Mundus: "Soon I will own everything worth owning. I will control the world through debt. I have absolute power."

Lilith: "The world is at last your bitch."

Both the 2013 DMC: Devil May Cry and this year's DMC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition are rated M for Mature for depictions of sexual content, blood and gore, and intense violence. The Entertainment Software Rating Board's content descriptions for both games are identical.

DMC: Devil May Cry also contains an implied sex scene between Mundus and Lilith, which remains intact in the Definitive Edition. The alteration of the cut-scene was first discovered by Eurogamer.

In a statement to GameSpot, Nijna Theory creative director Tameem Antoniades the decision to alter the dialogue between Mundus and Lilith.

"We did make an edit to the opening cut scene. It wasn't a case of censorship as there are far more suggestive scenes in the game," he said.

"We felt that scene in particular drags on a little bit for the opening sequence and frankly, we didn't like the line. Those few seconds were irrelevant to the scene and is covered effectively in a later scene where Mundus is metaphorically shafting world leaders."

"For the definitive edition, we took the opportunity to review all aspects of the game, and change things that we didn't like or couldn't add in time," Antoniades explained. "As part of that, we also added a brand new cutscene that didn't make it in time for the original game."

The DMC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition arrives March 10 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Check back soon for GameSpot's full review.

Haha, that's some terrible dialogue, but censoring it is just weak.

If it was sexually suggestive to begin with and that they didn't like the line, then it should never had be included in the game in the first place, or it should have been redone before the game originally came out.

Well, it was a stupid line. Even the part they didn't cut is stupid. Who wrote this? Some middle-schoolers?

Has anyone in the comments played DmC? I haven't but I know enough that if they changed that one line then it still would be highly mature rated and still would have everything else that I have heard about which makes this one line in comparison very tiny. Also the devs said it was because the scene was too long. I know a couple of people who want games to be longer but cutscenes are not the way to go. And finally wasn't most of the game's writing crap anyway? Why the **** would anyone care about ONE line? Sounds like they should have just deleted the cutscenes.

This censorship has to stop. If that dialogue was the creative expression of the writer, it needs to be left as is. Let the gamer (or if young the gamers parents) make an informed decision whether they want to hear it or not.

There are certainthings that I don't like seeing or hearing, but I just don't patronize them if that's the case. I don't want somebody to do it for me.

As long as they didn't feel pressured into removing the line by any external element I don't see the problem, but deep down I think we all know why they chose to lighten up that dialogue. They were being pro-active; it was antagonistic enough for ******** lobbyists to go after on a slow day, and they weren't married to the dialogue enough to bother with even the possibility.

It's disappointing but not a huge deal.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Do you really think that they were personally offended by what they wrote, or of everything in this game the only thing written that didn't meet their personal standards for quality happened to be some antagonistically explicit dialogue?

There's only one logical reason why they would've bothered to analyze and cut that specific bit of dialogue.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> You've never written something lacking in taste and wished you had a chance to remove it later? It happens all the time.

As I remember it, that particular line was particularly hamfisted. I literally rolled my eyes - not because I thought anybody was offended, but because it felt half-assed. It was sort of the epitome of failing the "show, don't tell" test. It wasn't showing the raw nature of demons so much as it was telling us that they were raw in a manner that undermined the potency of a villain.

Hehe... Sorry to break your balls, but - the ENTIRE game has terrible lines. The dialogue is atrocious. It's not even 1% better with the change.

I loved that line. was probably my favorite cut scene in the game. showed a lot of character and relations between the two characters with a sense of realism we have in real life.

where's the freedom of speech? politically correct stuff like this makes me wanna vomit

A dev edited out some of the most piss-poor writing in gaming history with absolutely ZERO influence from any outside sources. Nothing more...

By the internet logic here, every time you make revisions to a term-paper for school you are "CENSORING" your term-paper. *GASP*

The willful ignorance and base stupidity here is staggering. The Dev SAID it WASN'T CENSORSHIP. Now you have to fabricate issues to fit your mysogireasons? They have EVERY RIGHT to change their OWN game however they want. The anti fem crowd here is just plain delusional and is proving more and more every day why they are a sad reminder of what we should ALL strive to be better than.

You kinda did at the end, bro. Claiming we need to strive better? Come on.

I agree with your first half because they more than likely did change it with no outside reasons but that "wahhh anti-fem crowd" part really exposed your point.

We DO need to strive to be better. This pathetic attempt to drum up "support" for anti fem/PC "movement" proves yet again that they are a willfully self deluded group grasping at anything to keep the status quo. Which ultimately has never served them or anyone.

Yea they haven't served anyone and neither has political correctness. It's silly. It's all complaining about nothing.

Seriously, modern fems have done nothing but harm to. Western society so of course there's anti-fems everywhere. Shirtstorm and Manspreading are prime examples of utter nonsense yet that's what we should strive for?lol no.

Nobody wants censorship or to be bitched at for wearing a shirt.

Editing out a crappy line shouldn't be frowned upon. I could think of many games that could use some story/dialogue changes.

I HATE dream levels in any game and uber-psychedelic dream levels I hate even more so.

This is why I skipped DmC on last gen and why I will still be skipping this version as well. Bring on the remastered older games and I'll bite.

Those cutscenes reminded me of sun ken rock lol. Devil May Cry is really cool. The art direction and level design really pulled me in. In my opinion, the game play was kinda weak in comparison to games like MG Risin. Rising was the best Action game i played on PC!

Some "Definitive Edition" cutting content is retarded, what a joke. I was on the fence about buying this game twice, now I know not to support it. Political correctness and feminism is a disease please stop spreading it.

This is NOT either of the things you mentioned. Did you even read what the Dev had to say about the line? If you arent going to buy this based off one line change you weren't ever going to buy this game anyway.

could i ask something... what's wrong with sexuality in games.... i mean i can see cutting sexuality in games that got a "T" rating and an "E" rating but this is rated "M" so why not put sexuality in games like these. i am not complaining because this is a stunning game but i just making a polite point.

I think this wasn't a matter of cutting sexual content for the sake of cutting it out, I think this was done just as a revisal of writing. In the article they say that they felt that the scene was too long.
