Sexually Suggestive Dialogue Removed for DMC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition

Ninja Theory says it altered the opening cinematic to improve pacing and because "we didn't like the line."

People who pick up the Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition on Tuesday may notice that a scene from the 2013 original game has been altered for the new version to remove some sexually suggestive dialogue.

No Caption Provided

During a early cut-scene, main antagonist Mundus is outlining his nefarious plans with his demon mistress Lilith. In the original game, the scene plays out like this.

Mundus: "Soon I will own everything worth owning. I will control the world through debt. I have absolute power."

Lilith: "The world is at last your bitch. As am I. Nothing left but to grab it by the hair, bend it over over, and f..."

The Definitive Edition version, however, keeps Mundus' line intact, but shortens Lilith's to chop off the suggestive bit.

Mundus: "Soon I will own everything worth owning. I will control the world through debt. I have absolute power."

Lilith: "The world is at last your bitch."

Both the 2013 DMC: Devil May Cry and this year's DMC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition are rated M for Mature for depictions of sexual content, blood and gore, and intense violence. The Entertainment Software Rating Board's content descriptions for both games are identical.

DMC: Devil May Cry also contains an implied sex scene between Mundus and Lilith, which remains intact in the Definitive Edition. The alteration of the cut-scene was first discovered by Eurogamer.

In a statement to GameSpot, Nijna Theory creative director Tameem Antoniades the decision to alter the dialogue between Mundus and Lilith.

"We did make an edit to the opening cut scene. It wasn't a case of censorship as there are far more suggestive scenes in the game," he said.

"We felt that scene in particular drags on a little bit for the opening sequence and frankly, we didn't like the line. Those few seconds were irrelevant to the scene and is covered effectively in a later scene where Mundus is metaphorically shafting world leaders."

"For the definitive edition, we took the opportunity to review all aspects of the game, and change things that we didn't like or couldn't add in time," Antoniades explained. "As part of that, we also added a brand new cutscene that didn't make it in time for the original game."

The DMC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition arrives March 10 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Check back soon for GameSpot's full review.

*shrug* Doesn't seem like anything of value was lost, really. it was a superfluous line at best.

You guys can call it whatever you want to make yourselves feel better about it, but the plain and simple facts are they cut out an overly sexual scene because they thought we couldn't handle it again. Not because they thought the scene was too long. Seriously, who believes that? People WANT longer games.

Like all those little deleted snippets on the extras on movie discs that got cut to make the scene tighter. He's still pounding away. It doesn't make the scene any less sexual either, just a little less tacky. Arguing people want longer games to support your problem with losing 2 seconds of dialogue is the funniest thing I've heard all week, so thanks for that...besides, nobody is arguing they want their games longer via the cutscenes.

Lilith now says "The world is at last your bitch" instead of "The world is at last your bitch. As am I. Nothing left, you just grab it by the hair, bend it over and..." The edit makes the line "non-sexist" meaning Capcom, or whoever developed this version of the game, were scared of what SJWs and feminists would say. Its not that easy to pull the wool over my eyes.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> You know, I agree that if it was a decision to edit then it's not censorship but the timing of this is suspicious. Not long ago on The Bonus Round that ass Tim Schafer and a few other guys were discussing how remasters of games should have their language and scripts edited to "suit new tastes" and to not offend.

I know he has nothing to do with this game but that's the general climate in gaming right now. Big developers (and little ones actually because these "feminists" (thanks for destroying a cause I used to proudly associate with by the way) will publicly destroy their reputation and spread lies and purposeful misinformation about them (for instance saying that the Hatred dev is a Nazi???) just to make sure they won't get off the ground) are TERRIFIED of getting negative news. You can't tell me that if they released this that nobody would have started crap about it, that Anita wouldn't have included it in her video without context.

This is the problem with censorship, those in power start abusing it so much that people shut THEMSELVES up pre-emptively. That's absolutely vile and goes against everything our society was built on.

Again, if they did it for pacing reasons (I've never played this but what I read about the change (from basically "the world is your bitch and so am I" to "the world is your bitch") sounds suspicious, as someone else pointed out, why didn't they remove it from the previous reboot?) that's fine but it's hard to not think it's a case of avoiding hate.

This version of the game is also not as well known as other bigger franchises. I didn't even know about the reboot. Why are people so stupid not to realize that this is pure censorship. I bet this is the most sexist line in the game, and its gone because of what Anita and the rest of the feminazis are going to say.

Devs saying they're going to try to make their games less sexist. A female character who refers to herself as a bitch in a sexual way no longer refers to herself that way. Hmmm... not too hard to put everything together is it?

And this isn't endorsing censorship because this isn't censorship. They're actively trying to change their games for the better. Changing the MK outfits isn't censorship, it's tweaking a visual that makes sense. What is so wrong with giving the women more practical outfits for a fighting tournament? Hell, have you seen some of the designs? They're great. Amazing what you can do when you're given more cloth to work with. I don't see how changing the aesthetic is suddenly censorship. Frankly speaking, that word gets thrown around FAR too easily because so many people use it without really understanding its meaning.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> you're pretty dumb dude. this character is apparently overtly sexualised, she's meant to be a sexual nymph. taking away a sexual line is taking away her character. there's absolutely no reason for them to do this than to appeal to these feminists attacking the gaming industry.

when you have people demanding companies to change their products in favour of them because it hurts their feelings or for whatever agenda they have, then YES, that is unequivocally, without a shadow of a doubt, indeed censorship. "the devs changed it" is a moot point. what do you expect to happen? amateurs to change it? scientists to change it? homeless people to change it? of course they themselves changed it. the context is for what reason they did so. which is painfully obvious why they did so, because as i have stated before, there's no other reason for it unless they were appealing to a group of people.

btw his analogy "taking blood out from mortal kombat" is right on the mark. gore and blood is a key component in the mortal kombat series, which you actually acknowledged. without it, it's a watered down "kid safe" version. it's the same as this. without her oversexualised dialogue and everything that makes her character unique, she's just some other character with no substance, which again, i have already stated.

i've argued with your type before. you know you're wrong, that's why your arguments are falling flat. you're not making much sense to be honest with you. you argue for the sake of arguing.

learn to read between the lines. when it becomes politically correct to not have "sexist", "racist" or "homophobic" content for the sake of sparing a few peoples feelings, that is censorship. if that derogatory content fits perfectly within the storyline and conveys the characters personalities better, then it should stay.

this is virtual reality, it has no meaning once the console is shut down. as an avid gamer since i was a young boy, i don't like the fact that these people (who the majority of don't even play videogames btw) attack the industry i love and campaign to change it to suit their own agenda. again, it is censorship and you are the one who needs to wake up and smell the coffee my friend. at this point, anyone could pull the wool over your eyes you seem to be that dense. yes i may be a little harsh, but reality sometimes is that way.

for the people who find things like this offensive in a virtual world, i have to say - get over yourselves.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Great way to start a conversation by insulting me. And saying that "you know you're wrong"? Really? Because it couldn't possibly be that I'm sick of ridiculously proportioned characters - especially women - in video games and comics. Who's to say she doesn't still act nymph-like despite what she's wearing? Because it's still sexy. How she acts in the game will make or break that, don't you think? Instead of just basing it on her design?

Heck, look at the ORIGINAL Mortal Kombat I & II, with motion-capture actors. The women there are more realistically proportioned because they're based on fitness models. And their garb reflects a fighting tournament. So one could even say they're returning to form rather than making changes that aren't part of the series. It's still going to be cartoonishly gory so it's hardly going to be "kid safe" as you suggest.

It's not about being politically correct, it's being more tactful and respectful towards your audience rather than just pandering to a certain demographic. But again, so what if games become a little less racist, homophobic, and sexist? Why is that a bad thing? It's not censorship, it's growing the hell up. It's trying to be more open minded and not relying on such juvenile ways to present your story. I mean, by defending this so hard, it sounds to me like you actually APPROVE of games being sexist, homophobic, and racist. But of course, that's not the conclusion you want me to make, is it?

Speaking as a comic book fan, I look at that industry right now. Women creators are coming out of the woodwork and are creating some fantastic books. There's a movement now for better body proportions and less skimpy outfits. Trying to sell female characters as characters and not just sex objects. As a result, we're getting some amazing books, including Ms. Marvel, Birds of Prey, Batgirl, and the upcoming books for Starfire and Black Canary. All without needing to pander and make them just sexual objects. The video game industry feels like it's starting to crawl towards that and I, for one, welcome it.

If I re-published my first novel that came out two years ago, I would definitely be making some minor changes to it, including removing some choice words or sentences. Possibly one or two controversial lines because they rub me the wrong way in retrospect.

I'm not censoring myself doing that. I'm editing. There's a difference.

No, you're just saying what you THINK is the right answer with nothing to back it up. It doesn't matter whether they censor it or somebody else CENSORS it, it's CENSORSHIP. Is it really that complicated? It was their original idea, then they had second thoughts because people might get offended. It's just common sense, if you don't get it, then you're an idiot.

Either way, why must any kinds of edits like this immediately be censorship, self or otherwise? What's wrong with changing it when you look back at it and have second thoughts? Or, in this case, change it for pacing purposes? Because looking at the context here, I agree. The line doesn't really add anything to the scene and removing it is no loss.

when they take content out to appeal to a group of people angry over the fact that it hurts their feelings, then that is censorship. the same way the FCC cracks down on rap albums taking out swear words because they don't want people to hear it - people are offended, they demand to re-work their art, their freedom of expression is gone, which is undoubtedly censorship.

if a painter paints a nude woman in some kind of way that angers people and then they demand that artist to re-do it for the sake of their feelings, they're trying to censor his freedom of expression.

it's not that hard to work out. i'm sure you'll CHOOSE to ignore logic, but you know i'm right. i feel like the people screaming "learn what censorship means!" are the type of people easily spoon fed any type of BS and just run along with it, without questioning anybody's motives. sad times we live in.

In my opinion it's a good move, the line wasn't offensive, it was just shit writing, removing it is sensible. The character is still sexual, there is still a sex scene and she still gets shot in the stomach and then the head whilst pregnant. So they're hardly pandering to feminists now are they?

They didn't like the line or they were afraid of a backlash?

Hmm.. I can excuse removing a tacky line because you don't like it, but caving into public pressure makes me think someone has made you their..

<< LINK REMOVED >> Similar pondering to this - if you see a muslim woman with a burkha covering her head in a western country, did she wear it because she is expressing her freedom to dress as she chooses or is it because she is still being brainwashed/pressured into wearing one.

<< LINK REMOVED >> i'd give them the benefit of the doubt, it does seem redundant to have both that and the other scene later iin the game. wonder if they left in the actual doggystyling of her against the wall before the line.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well, Ninja Theory said the edited the line because they didn't like it and the scene drug on too long. And these are the people that would actually know the reason for the change. That they COULD be lying about it is not actually a reason to think that they are. It's entirely possible that the original line was the subconscious trigger phrase for KGB sleeper agents left stranded in America after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and Ninja Theory changed it after getting a discrete letter from Moscow.

But that's just speculation as well.
