Sexually Suggestive Dialogue Removed for DMC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition

Ninja Theory says it altered the opening cinematic to improve pacing and because "we didn't like the line."

People who pick up the Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition on Tuesday may notice that a scene from the 2013 original game has been altered for the new version to remove some sexually suggestive dialogue.

No Caption Provided

During a early cut-scene, main antagonist Mundus is outlining his nefarious plans with his demon mistress Lilith. In the original game, the scene plays out like this.

Mundus: "Soon I will own everything worth owning. I will control the world through debt. I have absolute power."

Lilith: "The world is at last your bitch. As am I. Nothing left but to grab it by the hair, bend it over over, and f..."

The Definitive Edition version, however, keeps Mundus' line intact, but shortens Lilith's to chop off the suggestive bit.

Mundus: "Soon I will own everything worth owning. I will control the world through debt. I have absolute power."

Lilith: "The world is at last your bitch."

Both the 2013 DMC: Devil May Cry and this year's DMC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition are rated M for Mature for depictions of sexual content, blood and gore, and intense violence. The Entertainment Software Rating Board's content descriptions for both games are identical.

DMC: Devil May Cry also contains an implied sex scene between Mundus and Lilith, which remains intact in the Definitive Edition. The alteration of the cut-scene was first discovered by Eurogamer.

In a statement to GameSpot, Nijna Theory creative director Tameem Antoniades the decision to alter the dialogue between Mundus and Lilith.

"We did make an edit to the opening cut scene. It wasn't a case of censorship as there are far more suggestive scenes in the game," he said.

"We felt that scene in particular drags on a little bit for the opening sequence and frankly, we didn't like the line. Those few seconds were irrelevant to the scene and is covered effectively in a later scene where Mundus is metaphorically shafting world leaders."

"For the definitive edition, we took the opportunity to review all aspects of the game, and change things that we didn't like or couldn't add in time," Antoniades explained. "As part of that, we also added a brand new cutscene that didn't make it in time for the original game."

The DMC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition arrives March 10 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Check back soon for GameSpot's full review.

This is hilariously innocuous on so many levels. God knows why they felt the need to take the line out, I can't be bothered to make assumptions. The line was awkward and bad anyway, though taking it out seems pointless, it's not like the game's dialogue is kid friendly anyway.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I imagine it had bugged the developers and was a pretty easy thing to fix, and they had the excuse to do it with the Definitive Edition coming out. What I don't get is how it got to be news.

Usually I would say "boo", since I fear the hand of SJWs. But that was crass line, so I don't care. It's not a big loss.

Honestly, they should re-write most of the script.

One suggestive line removed from a game full of crudeness. Big deal.

It dragged a bit so cutting a few seconds of a line made the pacing so much faster.

Was this line even in the original game? I don't really remember it, only remember that the Mundus Lilith parts were really stupid.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It was, I remember it well. As at the time I was going through the game I remembered that Ninja theory said they wanted to make DmC a more mature game so I was surprised their interpretation of a mature game was adding sexual undertones and a boat load of swearing.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Such shallow approach by the developers. I am not too surprised. Gaming industry nowadays thinks that mature means boat load of gore, sexual themes and especially swearing.

That's just pathetic and foolish really. Lack of taste. They really ruined the feel of the series, and put a stain on their game. You can't possibly take a game seriously like that.

I sure hope we will see a DMC5 - by Capcom and the Japanese developers, with a proper story and gameplay, and I hope to play as Nero again.

Don't get me wrong, I played and loved DmC, but it had too many design issues, especially a non-likable Dante. A really bad array of bosses, I mean aside from Vergil, they were really boring and tedious. Lack of over-the-top cool cut-scenes and story sequences. Level design wasn't the best for the most part.

We shall see where the series takes us. But I can do less with stupid swearing and more with over-the-topness.

So many people in here don't even know what they're talking about. Have any of you even played the whole game!? There would've been a lot more scenes being cut if the developers we're "caving in to femenazi pressure".

I remember that scene. I didn't care much for it then or now even with the change. Just seemed vulgar for the sake of vulgarity. By\jt it's such a small part of the game I probably wouldn't have noticed had it not been pointed out

<< LINK REMOVED >> Which seems more likely?

A. A major developer caved to feminist pressure and changed just one part of one line in their video game otherwise full of foul language, and then lied about why they did it.

OR

B. Ninja Theory didn't like the line and decided to change it for the Definitive Edition, just like they said, and those evil feminists didn't have anything to do with it.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> This is from the ESRB's description, which is linked in the article for anyone who hasn't read beyond the headline yet.

"The game includes some sexual material: scantily clad strippers dancing/gyrating provocatively; a woman moving her head toward Dante's lap (fellatio is implied). During one cutscene, moaning sounds can be heard while a female character is bent over a table—a man is positioned behind her, though there is no actual depiction of the sex act. A handful of still images (i.e., concept art) portray women with exposed breasts and/or buttocks."

Yep, the SJWs had their way with this one. SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURE.

Are people actually upset about this? They took one line out, why is it such a big deal? I'll never understand how people get riled up over such petty things.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Because its censorship, and just the beginning of the games industry being sanitized because of SJW types. Gaming is headed into big trouble because of devs caving to SJW types. Its all good though, I'll just stop buying games.

This makes me not want to get the PS4 version. I didn't buy the original & was going to pick the game up on PS4 but I don't like editing of the original work. But I suppose if thats the only part that was edited then its ok.

I respect their artistic vision, but I actually think that the original is more in line with the character of Lilith, at least in mythical terms. For those of you who don't know, Lilith is a monster in Jewish mythology (actually, Adam's wife before Eve) that's considered the mother of all demons. To make her demons, she steals semen from men by seducing them and/or having sex with them in their sleep. She's supposed to be a temptress. I don't really think that they took this out because of feminism, either. Any woman who knows the origins of the Lilith story could hardly be offended by this line of dialogue.

<< LINK REMOVED >> the mythology gives more reason for the feminists to rally against it, depicting women as temptresses who lure men away from the righteous/god intended path have always been the general theme in mythology, and i see why feminists should raise hell over it.

but in DMC's case although in the original script it was more gratuitous than normal one could easily ignore it,but then again it was the first 5 min in the game and i think the developers wanted to make it much more moderate.
