Update: Sony's escalation team has decided to pay a full refund, in this case. It is unclear whether the company will make any broader changes to its refund policies.

Original Story Follows

Questions have been raised over the standard of Sony's customer services after it was discovered that the victim of a PlayStation 4 hack would not be fully refunded the $600 that was stolen from him.

"The Sony representative told me that they are only permitted to refund up to $150"

Reddit user Kadjar

A Reddit user, going by the name Kadjar, explained that he awoke on Wednesday morning with a series of email alerts stating that about $600 of content had been purchased through his account. He also discovered that his PlayStation 4 has been deactivated from PSN and another system, of which the location is unknown, has seized control as the primary system on the account.

Having spoken to Sony customer services on several occasions throughout the day, his criticisms of its response was summarized accordingly:

  • Sony will only refund $150 of the $600 that was taken.
  • The money will be in PSN credit, and not refunded into the bank.
  • If the user escalates the payment dispute with his bank, his account will be banned.
  • If his account is banned, his purchased licences for games, such as The Last of Us Remastered, will be wiped.
  • If the licences are wiped, there is no way of restoring them.

The user's PlayStation 4 cannot be designated as the primary console for another 6 months, meaning it is locked out of the account until then.

If a PlayStation 4 loses its place as the primary console, users must wait six months to reverse the policy.
If a PlayStation 4 loses its place as the primary console, users must wait six months to reverse the policy.

Readers on Reddit have voiced outrage at what they consider poor protection from account hacks. Others have urged that this story highlights how important it is that users protect their account with a very strong password, due to the lack of protection should something go wrong.

GameSpot has contacted Sony to discuss the matter or provide some clarification.

Kadjar has published images of his online chat with Sony customer services, and highlights three other cases where users have complained about similar issues.

His post reads:

"This morning, I started receiving emails indicating a number of purchases on my PSN account. As the transactions came in, one-by-one, it became immediately clear that my account had been hacked. I immediately logged into PSN and removed my card from the account, changed my email and password, and simultaneously launched support chats with both Sony and my bank.

"The Sony representative told me that they are only permitted to refund transactions of up to $150. He also informed me that I could dispute the charges with my bank, but by doing so, my account would be banned from PSN. As a result, I would permanently lose all of my purchases, including the Last of Us Remastered.

"He also informed me that my existing PS4 had been deactivated from the network this morning, and that a new one had been activated. When I asked him to deactivate that new, mystery PS4, he said he could not. I then turned on my PS4, logged in with my new credentials, and attempted to activate my PS4 with my account, but it informed me that I could not activate it as long as there was another PS4 bound to my account.

"I called customer support, hoping for some clarification. The agent informed me that there is indeed a refund investigation underway, but that it will be limited to $150, and that it would be credited to my PSN wallet, not my bank account.

"Furthermore, my account will not be able to activate a new system for 6 months, per Sony policy. I'm completely locked out of my own account until that date. I then asked about what would happen if I got my bank to reverse the charges, and he informed me that it would result in a banned account. I asked if there would be any way to restore my purchases, and he told me that there would not be, but I 'only have the Last of Us and a couple of the monthly free deal games,' so it's not a big deal."

Several Reddit users have offered Kadjar copies of their games, which he has thanked them for, but declined.

"My goal here is bring attention to a few of Sony's bad customer service policies in the hopes that they'll change them," he said.

I have zero tolerance when it comes to thieves.

In my case, they have put a permanent ban on my account after someone send me hate messages and reported me. They have stolen from me countless dollars in purchased games over the years (let's see, from ps2 to ps4, at an average of €60 a month...) with that action. They are indeed thieves and shady burglars that say one thing and tho the contrary. Download the Sony Code of Conduct on their webpage for a good laugh about hypocrisy.

Sure, they can ban your account if they want. That does not give them the right to steal the games you have payed online (same price as a game in a physical box) because of blahblah. That's just completely wrong.

Boy, am I glad I didn't purchase ps5! Now that's not ever gonna happen! Sony = not a single buy, ever again! Hello LG and XBOX!

Sony are a bunch of pirates, as well as being well behind all other companies. Their hardware is pretty oldskool, and they deliberately block any pathways to contact them for support, and don't allow comments on their websites, youtube channel, or Facebook page, so you have no way of even contacting them or posting about your issues. They deliberately try to block any propagation of critique about them. I have never received a reply from any support request i have made, and their entertainment network is stone age crap anyway compared to apple tv and co.

Their products are nowhere near the leading edge they used to enjoy, and the fact they stopped making laptops just after i bought a Sony Vaio Duo 13 showed me just what a bad company they are, and that they are on the way out. They are now about to give up on their Mobile products by selling out too.

The Sony Vaio and Xperia devices i have are all so useless for most tasks, and over priced. The playstation network is a joke. The games on playstation are good of course, which is the only reason anyone still spends with Sony.

Even my Xperia phone says 'enter name or number' in the phone key entry, but there is not keyboard to type a name with, so it should just say 'enter number' because you cannot enter a name unless you have a keyboard.

@sakyant: First of all you spelt old school wrong then what are you talking about Sony is still thriving and are not on their way out. Have you done anything significant with your life like the head of Sony has? No oh yeah that's what I thought. With their support issue I call them and within ten minutes I have an answer to my question not ten minutes for them to answer the phone but ten minutes for them to have fixed my problem where as most companies take 20 to 30 without even fixing my problem. Outdated, what are you talking about? PS Store is still used because Xbox One is a piece and the store on PS4 is very useful along with the fact that most console gamers are using a PS4 anyway. None of your attempted points have had any fact behind them. This here is what I like to call a butthurt Xbox fanboy.

Foolish fanboys actually think only Sony does this trust me I own multiple consoles from both Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo and this is a common practice and policy for all of them to investigate claims as should be because fraud doesn't only apply to customers but happens to businesses too we don't live in a perfect world afterall and I could tell you times when I had moments like this tht wanted me to throw my console out the window for Microsoft and Sony as well as good stories when they actually came through and resolved something quickly nothing is ever so simple and there's good and bad in every company.

For example I just lost a microsoft account and had to start a new one due to some stupid policy involving the 2step protection that my soon activated by accident for one of my Xbox live accounts that was preventing me to get my account back because I could only answer one of the answers to one of the steps and even after gave them every piece of info they needed about my account including billing information and proved it was mine it still didn't matter because of one step and a stupid policy that states in small lettering that if you sign up for the 2 step protection and forget one step you will lose your account and they are not liable for it lol. Crazy part I'm not only wren to have this happen to where they are accidently signed up for the 2 step protection either.

What's even more Funny is that they could see the account has been inactive and stood that way for months that they were billing my credit card for btw and even after I proved it was my account all they could do is take my credit card info off the account and stop billing me for an account I can't access Yet even after they billed me and I could prove i was paying for the account it stil was not enough for them to get me my account back because of something clearly stupid policy. In fact the only resolution they had for me after that was me starting a whole new account and offering one free month for the poor support lol. Check this out the funny part is I'm still getting the monthly emails for that same account that they claim they can't help me due to a stupid policy that needs to be fixed.

Regardless of that experience fact is I still own multiple accounts and consoles and have had both good and bad experiences with either company. Thers always good and bad in every business and for ever nice support rep you get there's also a bad one no matter what business or company it is.

Seems to me the customer service guy did his duties and based on the online chat, there is a few possibilities and outcomes:

1. Kadjar is at WORK and is unable to access his PS4, meaning he is most likely at his office away from his home.

-His Child/Housewife/Roomates/Flatmates, etc might be using his PS4 and made the purchases.

2. The customer service guy did mentioned a detailed investigation is to be carried out and thus deactivating the account to prevent further abuse by the "Hacker" if theres one.

The article is rather rash and misleading, until the full story/investigation is disclosed, this is just a mere rumour.

Seemed like the customer service guy did exactly what he's supposed to. Change the article title to 'Sony wont refund $600 until an investigation is performed'. Would be more honest - but then again you wouldn't get the views. Right?

<< LINK REMOVED >> Sony already said they won't refund the full $600. I guess you missed that part in the article. Yes the customer service guy didn't what Sony told him to do. What Sony told him to do isn't right. The guy is now out $450 because of the hack. I guess you think that's ok. If it happened to you, I bet you would be singing a different tune.

How Sony treats their customers.

<< LINK REMOVED >> A similar hack happened to me on my XBox 360. I couldn't use my account for 30 days, but Microsoft reversed everything. I got all my credit back to my XBox account and the $25 purchase credited back to my credit card. Sony should do the same thing for this guy. I would definitely call my bank. #$@& Sony and their threats.

Yea, same thing happened to me, cousin accidentally purchased a 100$ game on xbl, called M$ and they refunded me... "to my bank account". Also I share my library with my brother in law, by making his console my home Xbox, his Xbox one broke and needed a replacement and this put me past the "three" swap limit, called M$ and they reset the counter. Costumer support is everything I dropped Sony after several times they wanted money just to speak over the phone regarding devices under warranty absurd amounts for a bricked psp that was unplugged accidentally and bricked during an update (199$) as well as a ps3 with the yellow light of death.

This is digital content.... That was purchased same day.... It's not like hard copies were shipped and that's what the investigation is for... And to give him monopoly money? If I were this user id reverse the transaction with my bank sell my ps4 build a pc (or upgrade) or jump to an xb1.

Seriously this is an easy fix..... Ban the new ps4, give the money back, and set the ps4 back to main console.

So pretty much thanks to sony's crappy ass security for PSN the guy is out of $600.Way to go sony just keep screwing over your customers.Sony should had did the right thing since it was their fault and did a full refund. No way in hell id ever give sony my information.Anyone who gives sony their credit card information is an idiot anyway.I have been with Xbox since 2001 never had a issue if i did microsoft fixed it and took care of it.Another reason why i dont touch anything by sony or refuse to have any of their products in my home except for movies of course.Hopefully that will change soon they couldnt even afford another spiderman movie had to lease the rights to marvel lol

I know people keep saying that "he deserves to be hacked" because you assume that he had a poor password. Hackers don't need to always access your account in order to steal your funds. In November, I had awoken to nearly $500 in charges on my Paypal account, which was showing the transactions from Valve. I contacted Paypal and Steam, and was told the hacker used some kind of "Link ID" to get the funds. They didn't need access to my Steam account or my Paypal account. Just needed this Link ID, and used some kind of hack that allowed them to use mine on their account.

I contacted Steam and the person told me that it could take up to 2 weeks to dispute the charges. They also asked me not to dispute the charges with Paypal, since that would automatically lock out my account. Luckily for me, Steam has a system in place that monitors charges and had already flagged them as suspicious. They were also already investigating the charges, and within an hour of hanging up with Steam, I received an email telling me that the funds had already been reversed.

I have removed the link between Paypal and Steam, since this was the flaw that allowed the hack. They explained that neither my account or Paypal had been compromised. The hacker only needed this ID to pull the funds. They couldn't explain how they got the ID though. It isn't something stored locally.

I would definitely NOT have my credit card number stored on anything made by Sony. They have quite the track record for getting hacked.

Remember just a few months ago when Sony went through the whole fiasco with "The Interview" and the PlayStation Network getting shut down.

I know this because I own both an Xbox one and ps4 so I'm speaking from both personal experience and fact that it was news during that time. Even EBay was hacked recently too I know because I had to change my password crap everyone gets hacked nowadays theres fanboys and haters on every side.

So many people putting way too much emphasis on the account being banned for reporting to the bank. Think about it this way: the Reddit guy is possibly lying, and he actually made digital purchases on the account totaling that amount. Then he calls his bank after receiving digital items and states the charges are unauthorized. Bank forwards complaint onto Sony, Sony has no choice but to refund the purchases since they cannot prove that he authorized the charges. Now the guy has $600 dollars in free digital downloads and could possibly do it again. To combat that practice, Sony closes all accounts that are reported to bank as unauthorized. So now, all those digital items that were fraudulently acquired are now useless. Sorry guys, you don't get to use things you didn't legally obtain.

I work for a credit card company, and we do the same thing to anyone who states that charges were added fraudulently. The company has zero fraud liability, much like most credit cards do. They aren't going to let you continue to use the same account in the chance that you are lying and have the opportunity to do it again. Blame Sony all you want, but the reason these kinds of policies are in place is because too many consumers are just plain liars and thieves.

However, it's been my experience that unfortunately a large percentage of people are not being honest. If you want to consider him being punished for someone else's action, then you can make that inference. Doesn't change the fact that it's still a policy created because of inappropriate consumer behavior, and is unlikely to ever go away.

$150 is the maximum you can have in your store wallet. Having looked at the conversation with the customer service person it seems this "Malcolm" was trying to do everything within their power to help them. As a customer support person he wouldn't have the power to look into the transactions himself and authorize refunds. He did exactly what someone at his level in the chain could do. He sent it up the food chain to someone that could. And Sony HAS to investigate. They can't just give out refunds willy nilly. Especially not in the $600+ range.

Seems to me like Sony is doing what they can to try and clear it up. Everyone here immediately jumping on the "Sony is evil" bandwagon clearly didn't bother to actually read the conversation he had with the customer support person or knows absolutely nothing about how the world works. Accounts get hacked. It happens. People seem to think that things rarely get hacked because hackers are only making attempts at that particular time. It's simply not true. There's something being hacked pretty much every second of the day. Most of the time it just doesn't get through. No matter how good your security is they'll get through eventually. In fact the harder it is the more inclined they are to try.

Also at no point in that conversation did I see the Sony customer service rep threaten him not to go to the bank. If anything he's trying to help him. If sounds like if the bank gets in out it the account will be banned because the bank will make them do it.

Guy has a case number and can follow up on it later. A couple weeks from now if Sony is ACTUALLY dragging their feet at the management level and not the customer service level and is ACTUALLY threatening to do bad things to them then maybe people will have cause to be upset. At this point though people are just reading what that want to, interpreting it in a way that suits them, or altogether just not reading any of it and automatically assuming Sony is in the wrong.

I think that he's been misinformed or misunderstood what was explained.

Its like losing a Credit Card and going to the shops were the items were bought instead of informing the bank of any misuse of funds. Store credit is ridiculous.

Check terms of use with any bank before believing hearsay. Its your money.
