Sony's New Game Concord Is Now Offline After Just Over A Week

Sony has shut down Concord, at least for the time being.

After just a week on the market, Sony has decided to remove Concord from sale and will take the game's servers offline. The move comes after the game failed to find an audience, with a reported 25,000 sales and very low player numbers. [Update: As of September 6, Concord servers are officially offline. As reported below, it's unclear if or when the game might return and again be playable.]

Game director Ryan Ellis said, "While many qualities of the experience resonated with players, we also recognize that other aspects of the game and our initial launch didn't land the way we'd intended."

Concord is no longer available to buy and the servers will go offline on September 6. Ellis said the team will "explore options" for how to "better reach our players," which sounds like the game could return in some form down the road.

Sony is refunding people who bought Concord. Those who bought the game on PS5 will get an automatic refund to their payment method. People who bought Concord on Steam and the Epic Games Store will get refunds, too, and players should look for email messages from those providers.

Anyone who bought a physical copy of Concord can get a refund from the store they bought it from.

This is a shocking turn of events, as few could have predicted Sony would end sales and shut the servers down for Concord so quickly, even though the player numbers and sales figures were low.

As Ellis alluded to in the statement, it sounds like Sony and Firewalk could be revamping Concord with a plan to bring it back in a different way. One possibility is it returns as a free-to-play title, which is what many expected it to be at launch to give it the best chance to find an audience.

Prior to this dramatic announcement, Firewalk planned to launch Concord Season 1: The Tempest in October, adding a new character, new map, new variants, and additional cosmetics and rewards. Season 2 was scheduled for January, with Season 3 expected in April, though these timelines have surely now changed.

Keep checking back with GameSpot for more on Concord.

The new Anthem is holding up to its nickname.

While some idiot at Sony got the brainfart to make live service games for some of that Fortnite pie they forgot why people bought PlayStations: Astrobot, Gravity Daze, Uncharted, Little Big Planet, Demon's Souls, Gran Turismo, Motorstorm, Infamous, Wipeout, Ratchet & Clank, Ico, God of War..

They want variety, not your latest attempt at live service trash!

@RSM-HQ: These games are exactly the same reason why I didn't buy a Playstation since the 2nd lol. These games are not enough, need new games. Recently I checked if latest Playstation has any decent game, only to find out it's so lack in games they were developing Playstation 2 emulator and they spammed tons of remasters. Good for new generation kids but my Playstation 2 still working and can run these games the way they are meant to be played so no thanks bro. I will check Sony after 2 decades to see if they decided to come up with decent playable new franchises lol.

@guitarwarrior66: As @sippio noted PS3 and PS4 had amazing games; have great memories with many great games. Though the PS2 was amazing as well.

The start of PS5 looked solid with Playroom, DeSRemake, and Returnal, even a new R&C all within the first year.

Then.. then Sony said they wanted all first party developers to work on live service games... I'm hoping this was Jim Ryan and with him out the door Concord is just a lingering parasite of his rule over PlayStation gaming. The new Astrobot is out soon and I'm very excited for it, but dam we should have more of that awesomeness..

It's all fatcats blindly thinking they'll deliver the next Fortnite.. Without considering Fortnite was lightning in a bottle in terms of success.

@guitarwarrior66: I agree with your disgust with the industry but

ps3 had alot of gems & so did PS4..

PS5 you are correct on. So far i only enjoyed GOD2 & EDF6

~Demon Souls remaster & SPiderman1 DLC wasn't worthy to launch with..

I could almost say that about my XboxSX but i do enjoy the backwards compat games.

~Here's where GuitarWarriorhas the opinon most of us have.

The quality has gone to sht since PS2. Everything iis greed motivated.

~Konami is only making a new MetalGearSolid because they want to sell Pachinkos but cant without brand recognition & BigBoss isn't as popular today as he was in 2000's...

I think Sony started this dark greedy path when it made PS3 no longer PS2 backwards compat..

Those launch Fat PS3's still sell for $150-$200 for a reason

and Sony knows this..

At some point all these companies replaced compassionate game lovers with marketing lawyers.

As I said before, it never felt like it was made for the average gamer, but for a small minority of (toxic) people who are trying to control what gaming should be.

Glad to see that someone sensible is pulling the plug in a reasonable amount of time instead of only whining about how it's anyone else's fault but their own...

Holy crap that was fast. But a good decision. Hope they learned their lesson this time and will stick to single player games.

Maybe more and more companies will realize that very few people are interested in this live-service nonsense. Fortnite is already enough for those who want to scratch that itch.

It all comes from all those dumb CEOs who saw a spark of interest in these products over the pandemic, thinking that this is the future of gaming.

The money that they’ve wasted on this one could’ve come in handy elsewhere.

@boobytrap: This money coulda went to Socom or Killszone or DaysGone2

or HideoKojima... There is no way they are this naive.

This 'naive' questino gets said alot. And i think there's some truth to Sony execs no longer being actual gamers and only look at numbers & in the wrong way at that...

~Same thing with SweetBabyInc. They know gamers hate this politics in gaming so much that they track the companies who insert it

yet they do it anyways..Some say it's not optional.

Cause WB knew it would turn off most fans but did it anyways.

Alot of questions about why/who etc.

With how messed up internally the devs are based on several reports and the simple fact the game is just a derivative product in a space crowded with also-rans this outcome is hardly surprising. Sony's insistence on preventing PC purchases in the 177 countries where PSN is unsupported also didn't help.

Hopefully this serves as a warning to others wanting to enter the multiplayer-only service game space. That space is filled with players who have already invested money and time into other games. Those games take up a lot of time, they want players to check in daily for new goals and rewards, and have more content coming to keep people engaged.

That means if you want to make a new game in this space, you have to pull people away from all of that not only love your game, but make them OK with missing out on something in another game.

If developing AAA big budget games is risky, then developing a AAA big budget service game is far riskier.

If you're still bent on making a service game, you need to start small and engage people organically, take feedback, and build from there until it grows into something that naturally pulls people away from other games. The more people you get interested, the more money the developer can invest in the game.

But this isn't something investors want big companies to do. They don't want to foster small petri dish projects that may or may not grow. Investors aren't interested in the long view 5 or 10 or 20 years down the line. Those types of long term investments are unfortunately gone. They are now only interested in the next quarter.

This is why bigger companies are trying to buy up smaller projects that are becoming successful instead of starting that themselves. It's why big publishers are shutting down studios but still buying other new ones.

@girlusocrazy:

Exactly! We don't need MORE games, we need more GOOD games which aren't just derivative, generic, formulaic versions of what we already have. There's only so much free time and money people have to spend on gaming.

I feel bad for the developers who spent nearly 8 years of their lives creating the game. As for the execs at Sony that not only greenlit this project, but didn't have the foresight to either cancel it or shift development into a different direction even half way through development, there needs to be some repercussions for this.

@Furwings: It sucks, and it was the decision of the company to do this, the developers probably couldn't change the overall direction, but they still got paid for 8 years of work at least.

We just need companies to make better decisions! Maybe we needed something like this to end up badly so that companies would get shook about relentlessly pursuing service games and snap out of it.

@girlusocrazy: Yep. It happened with MMOs. Happened again with MOBAs. Happened again with Battle Royales. And now Hero Shooters.

These games want so much of their player's time and money that after a few of them get established...that's it. Nobody has the time to grind out 20 different battle passes (if they even have the patience for battle passes in the first place)

insert your fav IP.. But but todays greed they would overcharge everything instead of just having 1 monthly fee.. Gamers would pay more if that was the only real money thing.

The fact that they were banking on this game to be successful just shows how out of touch Sony is nowadays. Some high-level firings are in order for a course-correction. They marketed Concord very aggressively, releasing a character trailer for every character. They made Concord their banner picture on their social media accounts. They made a Concord controller for PS5. They offered Stars points for pre-ordering and playing the game. I've never seen a video game being marketed so much only to be a spectacular failure on every level.

"While many qualities of the experience resonated with players..."

How delusional is this guy? No part of this game resonated with anyone, which is exactly why it flopped. The gameplay was ripped from other more successful hero shooters. The characters designs and vibe were ripped from Guardians of the Galaxy. It's a derivative product with cringe "modern sensibilities" that came at least five years too late. The 40 dollar price tag was just more insult to injury.

Dang, that was quick. They super missed the boat on hero shooters though, and with Overwatch being both well entrenched and free, Concord never really had a hook for what market is left in that space.

I'm sure the usual folks will want to blame "woke", but this game could have had all straight white dudes and sexy ladies as characters, and it wouldn't have changed the fact Concord is an unoriginal pay-to-play hero shooter coming out in 2024. It was never going to work out no matter what its "message" was.

@sippio: Wouldn't surprise me. All this live service trash was Jim Ryan's baby, and I imagine Sony wants to save at least SOME face while they back away from the massive money sink it's proven to be. Adding some woke crap appeases the more insufferable members of the development team while shifting the discussion away from just how horrible the game is.

How are you a moderator when you're posting obvious bait? This game is ultra-woke and the devs themselves have no problem admitting it. And if you think that sexy ladies don't help to sell an otherwise mediocre game you clearly haven't been paying attention.

@plurmp: But "woke" isn't why Concord failed. You described exactly why Concord failed in the post right above mine; it's unoriginal, costly, and outdated. Overwatch was just as "woke" and it succeeded when it launched because it hit at the right time and didn't feel like a clone of anything else. People blame "woke" for Concord's failure because they want to, but history has shown that pandering to a diverse audience doesn't cause games with good gameplay and a unique hook to fail.

@mogan: Ding. If "woke" was what made a game fail, why was Overwatch so successful before Blizzard ruined it with Overwatch 2? Why was Baldur's Gate 3 a runaway success last year?

While there is a severe problem with overt tokenism that can serve to alienate the very people they want to represent and appeal to, that's not what causes games to fail. If the game was awesome, people would be playing it.

@mogan: Overwatch's wokeness can be easily ignored, because most people just play the game and don't read the comics. Also, the characters are designed as characters first, so their sexual orientation isn't their whole personality. Nobody knew that Tracer or Soldier 76 were gay until the devs came out and declared it. And even after their sexual orientation was made public, they didn't start acting or dressing any differently. You know, because they're characters and not stereotypes.

That's not the case with Concord. The wokeness cannot be escaped because every character looks exactly like the caricature of what people immediately think when they hear the word "woke". Terrible fashion-sense, wacky hair, pronouns in bio, and lumpy physique. None of the characters look like mercenaries or even people who have ever handled a firearm. They look like college rejects who formed a cosplay club where they make their own costumes. Concord oozes wokeness and anyone who claims otherwise is lying to themselves.

I feel for the developers, must be an awful feeling. Putting this much effort into something for it to end like this.

At the same time, I like the signal this sends about what types of games Sony should focus on and not. There is nothing about Concord that appeals to me on any level. I'm glad the market agrees.

Good lord, a week and 25K copies? This might be the biggest flop in modern gaming history.

Here's a tip: Change the title. "Concord" gives no hit whatsoever as to what the heck it is. Concord is also a sleepy town in Massachusetts that is associated with the American Revolution and 19th century authors, which is very much NOT what this game is.

@olddadgamer: A bad title is the least of this game's problems. There are plenty of games with bland one-word titles that did just fine (ie. Control, Stray, Celeste). You can make a bland title work if the gameplay itself delivers.
