Square Enix bids for Eidos

Tomb Raider publisher's board accepts £84.3 million offer, unanimously recommends deal to shareholders.

The identity of the company with which Eidos Interactive--formerly known as SCi Entertainment--entered takeover talks in January has been revealed. Today, the board of the beleaguered publisher revealed that it has come to an agreement with none other than Japanese role-playing game giant Square Enix.

Talking about the deal, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada said: "Eidos' products are highly complementary to our business and will accelerate our aggressive expansion into Western markets." In the announcement of the offer, the Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Hitman, Thief, Championship Manager, and Just Cause franchises were called out as being among "the world's leading video game properties."

The Japanese publisher's offer of £84.3 million ($120 million) is being unanimously recommended to Eidos shareholders by the firm's board. That total represents an offer of 32 pence ($0.46) per share, which is more than triple the company's value when the approach was made, and double its share price when the London Stock Exchange closed yesterday. Since the announcement this morning, Eidos shares have climbed further, peaking at 31.25p ($0.45)--a 123 percent rise from the opening bell.

The announcement follows the news in January, shortly before Eidos announced that it had received and was considering a takeover approach, that sales of Tomb Raider Underworld had failed to meet expectations. Last year, the company shed 20 percent of its workforce, and its CEO admitted that the company needed "immediate change" to deliver appropriate returns to its investors.

Square Enix has been looking for acquisition targets to expand its global reach for some time, with Wada saying that his firm was "talking with quite a few companies in and outside of Japan," with a view to acquisitions. The move follows the Japanese publishing house's unsuccessful $200m move for Tecmo, and comes as its own share price is in the doldrums, nearing a six-year low. The company also released its delayed revised financial projections for the current financial year, downgrading its expected net income by 62.5 percent, blaming conditions in the arcade and offline gaming segments of its business.

"I doubt they'll even consider keeping the Eidos name what-so-ever." Then you obviously don't know anything about marketing. Ditching a fairly well known name like Eidos? The creator of Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief and Hitman? They'd be shooting themselves in the foot and it would be contradictory to their goal of "Expaning in western markets". Their goal is to keep that customer base and add it to their own, not alienate it. It'd almost be as dumb as EA ditching the Westwood name altogether instead of renaming some studio that no one cared about.

I am still having a hard time seeing Square be sooooo happy about Eidos' current products. But if they manage to turn the current franchises into somewhat of a more "Square-ish" success, then it makes sense to use the existing names that Eidos has established.

I'm curious to see what a traditional JRPG developer like Square might do when combined with a more WRPG game like Deus Ex. Hopefully they could bring together the best of both worlds!

This is buying up IPs cheap. Eidos hasn't been making money lately so they were eager to sell. I doubt they'll even consider keeping the Eidos name what-so-ever.

Square couldn't give a toss about the European market, same as Fony. If they cared that much, we wouldn't wait extra YEARS for FF games and we would have more of their games aimed at us. Eidos will be swallowed up and disappear, and Lara will soon be sporting spiky hair, a face that you can't tell if its male or female, and a freaking huge sword...actually, is that really a bad thing? Also, Thief is 'world leading video game property'?...O.K then... Sounds like marketing speak to me.

I can't really picture a Deus Ex game made by Square Enix, but we'll just have to wait and see I guess

I agree with Tremblay on his sentiments.. this just seems like a waste. Last ditch efforts like these will not regain lost ground in the west.. stop wasting money and plan to take advantage of future trends.. because outside of Nintendo it really doesn't seem like the momentum is in favor of Japanese developers right now.

This sounds like a really, really good idea. Square-Enix has one of the better creative staffs out there, and I would love to see what they could do with something like Hitman or Deus Ex.

If you really were making an "agressive expansion" into the western market, we'd be getting FFXIII this year. Also, Eidos isn 't the greatest purchase they could have made.

With the exception of the last few Tomb Raider games, I haven't really found Eidos games to be very good since way back in the day. Maybe Square can help their more popular IP's out some.

Good move by S-E. Eidos have made some brilliant franchises over the years (Hitman, Deus Ex, Theif) and this increase in money means that the best franchises will see sequels, which i can't wait for! I hope te people saying that there will be RPGs of TR and SR are joking :| Just because SE have bought Eidos dosen't mean the're going to dictate how they make their games...

YAY! Now we can have a Fighting Force RPG at long last.. lol But I wonder if the Eidos name will change.. SquareEnixEidos? lol again! Hmm.. definitely crazy news, but, hopefully it will bring more fresh ideas to Eidos. At the moment publishers are struggling to deliver NEW IP's so invigorating old ones or big-old-ones is the best bet. Saves some money and introduces better games to already known brands. Seems like a good move all round :)

I totally see this as a good thing. Square is saving jobs and Square isn't EA so the big Eidos game titles might improve. Seems a safe bet to me?

Square ingests Enix and begins to churn out massive piles of crap once or twice a year. What happens after they consume Eidos? More than anything, I am excited to see what they change their name to next. Yesterday, Squaresoft; today, Square Enix; tomorrow, some name people are going to confuse with a Pokemon.

Man, Eidos' games suck really really hard. Why would you want it? They've been leeching off of the totally dead and completely uncompelling Womb Raider franchise for too many years.

@rageset you couldn't be more right, but i don't see FF13 as a FAIL. SE is set to hit it big if they are able jump start the Eidos game titles. this could turn out very well for us all. i'm playing TR:U, and i have to say that it's a good game, but if more time had been spent in the combat portion of the game it could have stirred up enough good reviews to push the sales to their projected expectations.

Essentially, Square Enix isn't acquiring the company for its "valuable" development prowess but for those core IP's. Not a bad deal for 121 million considering that a reboot of any of those franchises in the hands of a skilled developer means Square Enix makes their money back and more. Square Enix needs to be careful though, they could set themselves up for a beatdown in regards to this economy crisis. Spending 121 million may not seem like a lot to a company that has many franchises that give them a license to print money, they just don't exploit them and if FF13 doesn't do great, Square Enix themselves will be on the other side of an acquisition.

well.. it's better than Eidos going bankrupt and closing it's doors. Square Enix's takeover is kind of a mercy acquisition. So... I guess I'm glad. I will be dissapointed if Laura Croft looks like a boy who looks like a girl with a giant sword.

Oh yeah Tecmo was that other company Square-Enix wanted to buy. That would have been a waste of time. As great as Square is, they couldn't have made a good Ninja Gaiden sequel without Itagaki and that's the only Tecmo property I like. Anyway, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada said: "Eidos' products are highly complementary to our business and will accelerate our aggressive expansion into Western markets." Yep, that's too true. Not only would they get Tomb Raider, they'd get Hitman, Freedom Fighters and most importantly DEUS EX! My favorite RPG of all time. Sorry Square but Deus Ex took Final Fantasy 8's place as my favorite RPG (and then Phantasy Star knocked FF8 to 3rd) I hope that SE buys out Eidos, lets them finish Deus Ex 3 and then helps with Deus Ex 4 which would be a story that has the one and only JC Denton's come back. That would be beyond incredible!!

After the last tomb raider...-NO!!! How many bad tomb raider games have there been? -and really, the first hitman was the best. Deus ex was the only one with potential. In the hands of Squenix, it can be a thing of beauty. I wonder if they'll incorporate eidos in the company name. Square-Enix-Eidos -Squenixdos
