Square Enix bids for Eidos

Tomb Raider publisher's board accepts £84.3 million offer, unanimously recommends deal to shareholders.

The identity of the company with which Eidos Interactive--formerly known as SCi Entertainment--entered takeover talks in January has been revealed. Today, the board of the beleaguered publisher revealed that it has come to an agreement with none other than Japanese role-playing game giant Square Enix.

Talking about the deal, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada said: "Eidos' products are highly complementary to our business and will accelerate our aggressive expansion into Western markets." In the announcement of the offer, the Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Hitman, Thief, Championship Manager, and Just Cause franchises were called out as being among "the world's leading video game properties."

The Japanese publisher's offer of £84.3 million ($120 million) is being unanimously recommended to Eidos shareholders by the firm's board. That total represents an offer of 32 pence ($0.46) per share, which is more than triple the company's value when the approach was made, and double its share price when the London Stock Exchange closed yesterday. Since the announcement this morning, Eidos shares have climbed further, peaking at 31.25p ($0.45)--a 123 percent rise from the opening bell.

The announcement follows the news in January, shortly before Eidos announced that it had received and was considering a takeover approach, that sales of Tomb Raider Underworld had failed to meet expectations. Last year, the company shed 20 percent of its workforce, and its CEO admitted that the company needed "immediate change" to deliver appropriate returns to its investors.

Square Enix has been looking for acquisition targets to expand its global reach for some time, with Wada saying that his firm was "talking with quite a few companies in and outside of Japan," with a view to acquisitions. The move follows the Japanese publishing house's unsuccessful $200m move for Tecmo, and comes as its own share price is in the doldrums, nearing a six-year low. The company also released its delayed revised financial projections for the current financial year, downgrading its expected net income by 62.5 percent, blaming conditions in the arcade and offline gaming segments of its business.

I think that Square-Enix wont make much of Edios if they do get to buy off the company as a whole. I think that Edios is better of with another company. Besides, if we all come to think about it, Square-Enix hasnt been doing much lately anyways. And with all of the cut-backs and lay-offs, people are just going to end up losing thier jobs as most companies that merge. Anywho, its really up to Edios not up to us.

A Square-Enix Deus Ex game would be very sweet. And you could solve Eidos' problem selling Tomb Raider games by replacing Lara Croft with Tifa Lockhart. All the fanboys would gobble that up. Sounds like a winner. ;-)

I'm not sure...i'm not sure. I think UbiSoft would be a better fit for Eidos. I just think that the company mentalities are so vastly different, aside from the fact that neither are creating anything worthwile as of late. However, this does makes sense in a way. It's been hinted at eastern developers trying to develop more in the direction of the west, which Eidos would make for a profitable purchase in the eyes of SE. I'm just not sure, though. Eidos and - Square Enix?

Waitaminute... did this guy really say that Kane & Lynch was one of the world's leading game franchises? Is that world Earth, or...? And does this mean that Square can now start pumping out cutting edge Tomb Raider games of which we'll end up waiting 10 years between each installment (I'm eyeballing you, FFXIII)?

Finally a possible return of legacy of kain. I'm sure square can do something great with it. Those games had great story but the game play was just so so.

At least one of you go tit right ... "This allows Eidos to use the development tools of SE. Gamewise, Eidos can help SE make better action oriented games, while SE can help Eidos with stories, and even get into the RPG genre. This can also benefit both by learning from each other, using each other's strengths and then creating brand new games - all original and not remakes."

Tomb Raider + in-depth story + awesome cinematics + polished gameplay = Amazing game & rebirth of franchise. SquareEnix is obviously in bad shape for this year because they don't have many blockbuster games hitting. They've had a few okay titles. Final Fantasy XII probably didn't do as good as it should have and they need to get FFXIII out the door. I never would have thought of SE buying Eidos, but I can see why they would want to.

Anyone else getting this weird image of Square doing a tomb raider? Eh, just seems strange or just not right I guess. Guess I was just raised in a different time, haha. the only contact I think these two companies had were when Eidos Publish FF7 (And 8, I'm not sure though) for the PC. This could be a good thing though, Eidos has been going under since the end of the PS so we'll see if Enix can use them properly to make some good action oriented games.

The is awesome. Now Square Enix doesn't have to change the style of the Final Fantasy series to get more money from the western market :) ....( unlike capcom's Resident Evil )

WOW, back in the day who would of thought..... that the creator of Final Fantasy, and Dragon quest would end up owning Tombraider? If you told me that back in 1997 I would hace laughed at you. I'm not sure Square Enix can fix Tomb Raider though.... eidos has done a pretty good job of messing her up... EIther way for any developer "you're only as good as your last game!" so we'll see what happens?

I think its a good move for both. This allows for SE to market into the western countries. This allows Eidos to use the development tools of SE. Gamewise, Eidos can help SE make better action oriented games, while SE can help Eidos with stories, and even get into the RPG genre. This can also benefit both by learning from each other, using each other's strengths and then creating brand new games - all original and not remakes.

I hope they will revive some franchises in a good way. Just get the Square's scriptwriters....for the most parts. I loved first Deus Ex and Hitman. But sequels were not worth playing. As Final Fantasy franchise reinvents itself almost in every roman number, so should those great names. And I hope SE will give them that mojo.

@Shtinky: Really. You're generalizing so badly it's not even funny. The Deus Ex and Thief franchises hold some of the best games I've ever played. I know, Deus Ex 2 was a minor disappointment and Thief 3 was slightly consolized (smaller maps mainly, but gameplay was intact). Even Tomb Raider has gotten back on track with Legend and Anniversary Edition (I haven't played Underground yet).

Lulz, it's hilarious that everyone believes Square-Enix is going to turn all of Eido's properties into a J-RPG. Why would they do that if they're looking to get the attention of western audiences? If anything this'll influence Square's games into becoming more western-friendly, and Eido's titles will benefit from SE's development tools. If anything this move will probably make games like Final Fantasy more to the taste of those of you who're complaining.

Thief? If they intend on working on that I really hope they bring it back to what it is meant to be - I like my RPGs as much as the next guy but don't ruin it (although 3 ruined it anyway but you get my point). And Hitman? I really hope that isn't messed up, one of the only true stealth games that remain.

Come on square, I understand you need to be polite to Eidos, but you don't need to call Kane and Lynch a "leading video game property". I don't know if I could say that with a straight face.

Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Hitman, Thief, Championship Manager, Just Cause and Kane & Lynch Errm all these games suck. I still the remember the horrible Deus Ex sequel, the crappy tomb raiders, which have gotten worse with each incarnation and all the rest of those are rubbish franchises. Unless there's a hidden Jeff Gerstmann secret playable character in all those games I have no interest and neither should YOU.
