Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Underperforms, Microtransactions Coming Back

Microtransactions are coming back "in the next few months."

[UPDATE] EA confirmed to WSJ that Battlefront II shipped 9 million copies during its launch quarter. This is down significantly from the 13 million copies the 2015 Battlefront reboot shipped during its launch quarter. Blake Jorgensen, EA's CFO, said during an earnings call that Battlefront II underperformed. EA had modeled 10 million shipments for Battlefront II during its first quarter.

Additionally, Jorgensen told WSJ that Battlefront II will re-introduce microtransactions "in the next few months." EA removed microtransactions from Battlefront II just before the game's public release in the wake of significant blowback from the community.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Underperforms, Microtransactions Coming Back

EA caught a lot of flak over how Battlefront II allowed you to buy loot boxes--which contained items that affected gameplay--for real money. It remains to be seen what changes there could be to the loot box system when microtransactions do return.

Whatever the case, EA says it believes in microtransactions as a means to "enhance the experience in our games." However, the company cautioned that EA needs to do this the right way to avoid another Battlefront II-type situation.

"Going forward, we believe that live services that include optional digital monetization, when done right, provide a very important element of choice that can extend and enhance the experience in our games," EA said. "We're committed to continually working with our players to deliver the right experience in each of our games and live services."

Also during the call, EA talked about how Battlefront II, overall, was a "learning opportunity" for the company. For starters, it was collaboratively developed between three studios, while the aforementioned controversy over the digital economy was a learning experience as well, the company said.

While Battlefront II may have missed EA's initial sales targets, 9 million shipped in three months is still a massive achievement. Additionally, Jorgensen went on to say that EA is expecting Battlefront II to sell as many as three million more units during its current fiscal year, boosting its total to potentially as many as 12 million units. This would compare to 14 million units shipped for the 2015 Battlefront during its fiscal launch year.

EA added that its efforts to make Battlefront II a game that keeps players coming back is working. Over their respective first three months, Battlefront II players logged twice as much play time as the 2015 Battlefront game.

More details from EA's latest earnings report follow below.

For the quarter ended December 31, EA reported revenue of $1.16 billion, compared to $1.15 billion. EA posted a loss of $186 million during the quarter, which is much worse than the $1 million loss it took during the same period last year. Importantly, EA mentioned that it incurred a $176 million tax expense during the quarter related to the recently adopted Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

There were some financial bright spots during the quarter for EA, including the fact that digital revenue, which is higher margin, is taking a bigger share. For this latest quarter, digital revenue was $780 million, compared to $380 million for packaged goods. For the same period last year, digital revenue was $685 million, compared to $464 for packaged sales.

Here are some other takeaways from the EA report:

  • The "FIFA community" on console alone rose to 42 million players.
  • FIFA Mobile added 26 million players in the quarter alone.
  • FIFA Ultimate Team's player base jumped by 12 percent year over year.
  • Battlefield 1 now has 25 million unique players since it launched.
  • The Sims 4's player base grew by 35 percent compared to last year.

outside of micro-transactions.. the other main issue i had with the game is the advertised empire campaign..

to that i say, what empire campaign? you mean the 2 missions i play as an imperial agent.. and then it becomes a campaign about "redemption" and now im a loyal soldier in the rebellion and basically second in command to Leah??? really??

EA, Microtransactions aren't going to fix Battlefront 2. The main story was lame and the rest of the game while fun didn't make any dent on my liking of it or not. No one likes the 'pay-to-win' scenario for any game and you should stop supporting it.

The odds of selling 33% more in a shorter time period than when the game launched--the period in which it sells the best, is not going to happen.

If they sell another 2 million copies at the end of their fiscal year, they would be lucky.

As it stands, a company like EA measures its success as it compares to past success. A 30% decrease in sales is NOT a success, not for a company like this, and certainly not for any company that values growth of any kind.

Developers of much more successful franchises have been disolved or downsized for less.

Oh yeah, I'm sure bringing back the very thing that caused the game to underperform will make it perform better.

EA logic at its finest.

People say micro transactions are here to stay. Really? cause over the past 2 years my day 1 bought games are zero, I refrain from ubisoft, ea and activision and usaully are informed weeks or months before a game releases that it is fucked or riddled with p2w or micro transactions.

Clearly people are still buying these games, but im not. and tomorrow neither will her and him and them. Weve already drew are line in the sand and theyve already crossed it.

@ramtracker42: Microtransactions didn't do anything to Destiny 2 and the franchise is anything but finished. Destiny 2's current woes stem from Bungie's efforts to redesign the game after Destiny 1 and alienating all the hardcore players. They'll spend this year slowly fixing/improving it and when Destiny 2's version of The Taken King launches it'll be hugely popular again, just like last time.

As much as I want EA to eat shit for this, I know it is their developers who will suffer.

So, I'm glad the micro-transactions are back on so 1% of the suckers can pay the devs' salaries.

@sasren: I have no idea where you got that idea, but most of the tax bill went into effect in January 2018, with a handful of timed provisions kicking in later.

Sorry if that fact hurts your political biases, but facts are facts.

@Dark_Matters: it did go into effect in 2018, kind of hard to pay taxes on end of year earnings before the year ends ya know... Accounting is always a month behind and a year behind.. 2018 we are doing taxes on 2017, we can not do taxes on 2018 because it has not ended, so yes this is where i get this from, it is what i do for a living.

@sasren: Gamespot then changed the article slightly, EA mentioned that it incurred a $176 million tax expense during the quarter related to the recently adopted Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Only problem, if this is EA's first quarter, that means EA's fiscal year began in October of 2017, if this is in fact their first quarter, once again the new tax law didn't take effect until jan of 2018, so once again its bullshit.. not sure if this is EA making this excuse or gamespot journalists injecting their BS politics into an article, either way its 100% bullshit.

The 9 million idiots that got suckered into buying this game should be flogged. Here's a simple plan I go by. Don't buy any EA games ever!! Don't give these bastards any of your money. No matter how good it looks don't fall for it. Don't preorder their games, don't buy deluxe editions or season passes. Don't give this cancerous vile company any of your money.

I rented Battlefront 2 just to check it out and sent it back after a couple of days and I was giddy with the fact that I paid EA nothing in the process. In short **** EA.

@Lizard_King89: I've followed that model ever since they made crappy games for Sega Genesis by bootlegging cartridges (they did, seriously, look it up).

EA has always been about the profit, not about the game.

@SexyMiralda: They probably are though. Unless somebody tries selling a AAA for like, $70 instead, and it ends up working, microtransactions are probably going to stick around in AAA gaming for ... well, probably forever. At least until there's another massive industry crash.

Disney had EA remove the loot boxes, because Disney didn't want the bad-will spreading to the release of Last Jedi. Now that the movie is leaving theaters, it is time to start looting the players again.

EA can burn in hell. They are the worst gaming company out there. Won’t buy another game from them till the culture changes there which is probably never. Studios join EA to die and franchises go to EA to become shells of their former self. Taking a freemium model and still charging 60 dollars is a crime. The progression system is absolutely the worst ever in a game. Can’t believe Disney allowed EA the rights to make Star Wars games. They are just as dumb and stupid as TLJ was one of the worst Star Wars films.

This game is a massive disappointment, and it goes to show that EA will always find a way to get an extra dollar from the consumer. First there was the online pass, which irritated consumers to the point that they had to get rid of it because sales on games were dipping, and people were not buying passes when they purchased pre-owned games. Now there are added loot boxes that tie directly into multiplayer progression. I never liked it, and I was ok that people payed money to get all weapons/accessories if they paid like $40 for BFBCII, again wouldn't do it but people knew exactly what they were getting. What I find interesting is that consumers are now upset about it, this type of progression was used for Mass Effect multiplayer. My guess is that Star Wars has a much bigger market or we finally pulled out heads out of the hole.

EA failed in a major way, and their "Only Hope" (yeah, you saw what I did there) is to leach onto the unintelligent gamer, or children who do not understand nickle-diming to create a greater sum. It is sad...at this point the best thing that can happen to EA is MS buying them out. You can talk lack of exclusives all you want (mute point, I own all three systems), Phil Spencer made the Xbox a consumer friendly system. Maybe MS will stop EA from buying out producers only to have them tank due to EAs poorly developed bottomline.

@othermoon2: Their microtransaction model is based of Freemium system that is "grind you ass off or pay", a nagging system that been phasing out due to the saturation of the market. This is what AAA publishers been after since their "games as services" started that is giving then the same issues as Freemium games except those didnt had AAA costs attached and have a low/non-existing entry cost, its literally the worst of both worlds and why its failing on their faces.

And the Xbox is not a "consumer friendly system", they started with the whole subscription junk were not only I have to pay for my IP for internet connection but also I have to pay MS so I can use my internet connection, this is double dipping and unacceptable.

@drkn06: The amount of money that I have saved on games by using EA Access and game sharing with my brother out weighs the the subscription cost of Xbox Gold. My PS4 and Switch do not allow game sharing on a digital format. What are the benefits of Playstation plus or the online service for the Twitch?

I mean, trying to say microtransaction provide important choices is some PR bull****, but I do agree with the rest of it. The sticking point though is that microtransactions only work "when done right." If EA can meet gamers in the middle on this stuff, instead of creating games where all the progression is tied to random rolls you can buy with real money, they might have an easier time turning their big, expensive AAA projects into the mega hits they want.

So they they only sold 9 million at the 60$ price tag? So making over half a billion dollars meant you weren't making enough from the game so EA had to bring back microtransactions? Really? They took them away because people complained and they just figured that wave of bad press had gone away so they are sneaking them back in under the guise of "poor little EA couldn't make enough plz help."

@mcskirmish: No that is incorrect. Units shipped does not translate into units sold. The units shipped number is misleading because that is just the total amount that EA shipped to retail stores.

In reality, EA sold about 1.7 million copies for the PS4 and about 800k copies for the XBox One. The numbers on PC are actually embarrassing because they only sold roughly 40k copies.

I am a Star Wars fan so that is why I bought the game, but lately the game has been pretty dead. Sometimes it takes a good 20 minutes to get into a match and EA hasn't really given us clear updates in quite awhile (probably because they have been trying to stay out of the press). If they bring the exact microtransacations back, then it will truly be a wtf moment, however, if they introduce microtransactions for stuff like XP boosts and for cosmetic items, but introduce a completely revamped progression system then that could work.

Basically, what is going to save this game is a revamp of the progression system and loads of new content. The game has been out for over 2 months and we haven't really gotten a lot of content since launch (we have gotten 2 new heroes and one new map).

@mcskirmish: I don't think anybody is trying to sneak in anything here. They're saying, the game didn't meet expectations so we're putting monetization options back in to try to make more money. It's all pretty upfront and clear here.

What's actually important will be exactly what those microtransactions look like when they come back. If they're the same as they were around launch, that's not a great indicator that EA is trying to learn from their mistakes.

Another CEO who doesn't "Get It", typical of your "I've never started a company from the ground up, only went to school" mentality that is "Stupid Street". This guy is so disconnected from his customers it's not even funny. Microtransactions don't in any way add to the game, unless its massive content that you are adding into the game that does not effect game play aka "Expansion Packs". This guy can go choke on a big fat donkey dong, what a worthless piece of trash.
