Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Underperforms, Microtransactions Coming Back

Microtransactions are coming back "in the next few months."

[UPDATE] EA confirmed to WSJ that Battlefront II shipped 9 million copies during its launch quarter. This is down significantly from the 13 million copies the 2015 Battlefront reboot shipped during its launch quarter. Blake Jorgensen, EA's CFO, said during an earnings call that Battlefront II underperformed. EA had modeled 10 million shipments for Battlefront II during its first quarter.

Additionally, Jorgensen told WSJ that Battlefront II will re-introduce microtransactions "in the next few months." EA removed microtransactions from Battlefront II just before the game's public release in the wake of significant blowback from the community.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Underperforms, Microtransactions Coming Back

EA caught a lot of flak over how Battlefront II allowed you to buy loot boxes--which contained items that affected gameplay--for real money. It remains to be seen what changes there could be to the loot box system when microtransactions do return.

Whatever the case, EA says it believes in microtransactions as a means to "enhance the experience in our games." However, the company cautioned that EA needs to do this the right way to avoid another Battlefront II-type situation.

"Going forward, we believe that live services that include optional digital monetization, when done right, provide a very important element of choice that can extend and enhance the experience in our games," EA said. "We're committed to continually working with our players to deliver the right experience in each of our games and live services."

Also during the call, EA talked about how Battlefront II, overall, was a "learning opportunity" for the company. For starters, it was collaboratively developed between three studios, while the aforementioned controversy over the digital economy was a learning experience as well, the company said.

While Battlefront II may have missed EA's initial sales targets, 9 million shipped in three months is still a massive achievement. Additionally, Jorgensen went on to say that EA is expecting Battlefront II to sell as many as three million more units during its current fiscal year, boosting its total to potentially as many as 12 million units. This would compare to 14 million units shipped for the 2015 Battlefront during its fiscal launch year.

EA added that its efforts to make Battlefront II a game that keeps players coming back is working. Over their respective first three months, Battlefront II players logged twice as much play time as the 2015 Battlefront game.

More details from EA's latest earnings report follow below.

For the quarter ended December 31, EA reported revenue of $1.16 billion, compared to $1.15 billion. EA posted a loss of $186 million during the quarter, which is much worse than the $1 million loss it took during the same period last year. Importantly, EA mentioned that it incurred a $176 million tax expense during the quarter related to the recently adopted Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

There were some financial bright spots during the quarter for EA, including the fact that digital revenue, which is higher margin, is taking a bigger share. For this latest quarter, digital revenue was $780 million, compared to $380 million for packaged goods. For the same period last year, digital revenue was $685 million, compared to $464 for packaged sales.

Here are some other takeaways from the EA report:

  • The "FIFA community" on console alone rose to 42 million players.
  • FIFA Mobile added 26 million players in the quarter alone.
  • FIFA Ultimate Team's player base jumped by 12 percent year over year.
  • Battlefield 1 now has 25 million unique players since it launched.
  • The Sims 4's player base grew by 35 percent compared to last year.

Between The Last Jedi and Battlefront II, 2017 was the absolute WORST year for Star Wars.

Pretty sure it's a real failure since they reduced EAFront 2's price when TLJ hit the theaters.

Maybe if they made a 20+ hour SP campaign they would never have to worry about loot boxes again. Food for thought, EA.

@bongaconga: I doubt it. The campaign they did make wasn't good even for the 6 hours it lasted. Another 14 would have just lowered the number of people who bothered to finish it.

@Mogan: i meant a good and deep 20+ hr campaign a la Half-Life 1 or something. The vast majority still want SP campaigns, so many of us would have bought this game even with all the shit mp lootboxes if we had an amazing and lenghty SP campaign.

@bongaconga: Ehhh, I don't know if that's actually what the vast majority really want. It's what I want, but look at what the hottest games are right now. CoD still outsells everything, League and DotA dominate Twitch (until Sea of Thieves' beta started the other day), PUBG is the new big thing, Overwatch got tens of millions of players in a matter of months, and I'm pretty sure Battlefront 1 still managed to outsell The Witcher III in the year they came out.

Meanwhile Wolfenstein 2, Prey, and Evil Within all under performed last year. Neir and Assassin's Creed did OK I think, but nothing like CoD or Battlefield, and Andromeda was a 5 year project that kinda flopped. I'm not convinced that single player games are what the majority of gamers (and I don't just mean the folks who frequent sites like GameSpot) actually want. I think there's a market for them (man, I HOPE there's a market for them), but not in the top, top tier of big expensive flagship AAA projects like Battlefront 2.

@Mogan: Yeah, besides Battlefront was always sold with a punchline "Live the battles". There have been lots of story-centric Star Wars games, but Battlefront was finally the one where we can live the battles of Hoth and Geonosis ourselves, in the shoes of anyone we wish, dynamically. Scripted 1-player story just won't deliver that.

With EA's Battlefront it's pretty clear at least the player (&bot) number, even lower number in space battles, and the lootboxes hold things back. Plus the (blind) hatred towards EA nowadays.

Well I am glad I didnt buy this game, I am just so sorry EA holds the legal rights on so many titles. The new Anthem game looks promising but now that its pulled for next year I can't but help wonder why, probably EA are trying to build in some microtransation bs that is "just right" for them. Games are already so damned expensive, why pay more for what you should have got in the game.

Hopefully Cyberpunk developed by CDPR will be as good as I believe it will, simply looking at The Witcher 3, they have a no bullshit policy and their developers appreciate the players more than EA ever will imo.

@N0madS0uL: As much as I like The Witcher series, and The Wild Hunt in particular, I'm pretty sure Battlefront 1 actually outsold it. So long as EA thinks the biggest money is in multiplayer/live/games-as-a-service games, that's what they're likely to make, even if gamers keep ****ting on them online and praising CDPR.

@Mogan: Two different things for 2 different ideology, Toyota can outsold Mercedez but that doesn't mean Mercedez is not satisfied with the result they have. The same for CDPR they won people'strust, specially the fan base which was happy with The Witcher 3, i'm pretty sure that their next game will do better now that they have their fanbase trust.

@mannyc5: Sure, and I'm sure CDPR will probably stick to their Good Guy Greg policy for Cyberpunk as well. But that guy's saying EA doesn't appreciate their players the way CDPR does, and I'm saying EA's game outsold CDPR's game without needing them too. It's unfortunate, but it seems like being the good guy doesn't always make you the most money. : \

I recently bought it on sale, knowing the MP was messed up. I needed a Star Wars fix, and got it from this games Single player. But the loot boxes are a joke. And there appearently is a quota of how many credits you can get from SP games each day, trying to force you to play MP, with all its inherent problems, and pretty much dead community.

The gameplay is somewhat shallow, and the fun wears out quickly. People do not seem to be playing much, as half the time you are waiting for players to join before it will start. So you really cannot play whenever you want. The first BF II filled in the empty slots with bots, so at least you can play MP whenever you wanted. But since these companies making this one were not smart enough to do that, the game is dying quickly.

Let them bring their foolish microtrashsactions back. Their is no longevity to this game.

@kenundrum7: never an issue waiting. I think you are making things up. they are also changing the progression system.

so are you ok with paying 100 dollars for new games? are you ok paying for season passes? if you answer yes to both, then no issue, if you answer no, then microtransactions have to stay.

so many uninformed gamers

@xcael: $100 for new games? Where did that number come from?

And considering Battlefront 1 sold better than Battlefront 2, it seems like gamers actually would be more OK with a season pass and DLC that costs money, rather than the microtransaction mess Battlefront 2 tried.

@xcael: You said "they are also changing the progression system." Maybe. But I can only judge what they have now. Not what they might have in the future. Not only is the progression messed up, but it's broken too. I racked up enough kills to unlock the second mod for the CR-2, but it won't unlock. Broken.

@xcael: You can usually find Galactic Conquest games, but those are pretty lame. Just running and dying, with a little action in between. More frustrating then fun. But the smaller (better IMO) games, like Blast or Strike, are almost dead, and even Starfighter Assault is iffy.

"so are you ok with paying 100 dollars for new games?" Not really. But if it is worth it I would do it.

"are you ok paying for season passes?" Not really. But if it is worth it I would do it.

"if you answer yes to both, then no issue, if you answer no, then microtransactions have to stay.

so many uninformed gamers" You can defend the greedy evil Empire all you want. The progression in this game is ridiculous, and moronic, and the obscene greed of EA for trying this showed their true colors.

So many foolish lemmings.

Bottom line is, the game is not worth putting more money into. It simply isn't that fun. It looks awesome, but the gameplay...meh.

@kenundrum7: Honestly you should get your SW fix from KOTOR (28-36 hours), KOTOR 2 (31-39 hours) or even the Old Battlefront 2 (8-12 hours) than the game you played, the new Battlefront 2 (4-5 hours).

The games i mentioned were more original, had a much closer collaboration from Lucasarts than EA has with Disney, they were Cannon back then (when Cannon mattered) and they are Cannon now (especially old BF2 with the 501st Legion).

The old Battlefront 2 is so successful it even has its own servers. Amazing for a 2005 game that wasnt really supported by EA.

https://www.pcgamesn.com/star-wars-battlefront-2/battlefront-2-multiplayer-restored

As you can see its not bad either. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOJtqLt87Ic

Forgive me for my words and i mean no disrespect but New Battlefront 2 goes for 40$ now, and it seems you paid 10$ per 1 hour of story (if you were interested only in sp). Do me a favor and check the games i mentioned. You might be positevely surprised.

@Geogyf: I appreciate what you said. I had the 2 original Battlefronts, and liked them. I had KOTOR too. I think I had KOTOR 2 as well. I like action over RPG though.

I was kicking around getting Battlefront 2 on Steam, for nostalgia's sake.

Yeah, my experience get so enhanced when I pay for something that should be free. What a fucking disgusting company. Can't someone hack them and destroy their servers or something for the good of gaming already?

That's funny. The game "underperformed" because of the controversy around microtransactions and now they're adding them back to "enrich the experience".

Pretty messed up when even 9 million sold units aren't enough anymore. But I'm sure all the kids who don't know what to do with their money, young and adult, will make sure that EA still reaches their goals. Hopefully most countries will at least make loot boxes illegal, since it seems to be under investigation everywhere now.

It underperformed because of the bs. But hey! Let them bring back the bs so they can get the people who play it, to buy up boxes so EAs $ bags can even out. I wish EA would go away.

It’s really surprising that they failed at this game. I actually enjoyed EABattlefront 1 more than 2. At least I had freedom to customize, this game was a huge letdown, and I’m a huge Star Wars fan, but I cannot overlook how terrible EA managed to make this game. The illness of current society businesses to constantly need to have profits will be the downfall of the world. One day, you just can’t earn more cause there simply cannot be more.

Micro transactions. Lock 80% of the player base out of content who are unwilling to spend. 19% who will buy around $20 worth. And the 1% who are whales who buy thousands worth. Thanks for making a game for the 1% to enjoy.

These stats are 100% correct, source: stats.com

did you notice EA lost money as a company? developers are trying to make profit, otherwise they fail. So are they not allowed now>

Companies should make profit, but not like this.

@xcael: Did they cut you a check? There's plenty of games available that don't have insidious microtransaction models on the market and EA is doing it wrong. Sure, no season pass, free DLC, the game isn't more expensive...but look at Overwatch or Rocket League and see how it's done correctly before defending a system that is not in favor of your wallet.

This company is just pure garbage, isn't it. I mean, do they not understand why it underperformed? Or do they just not care? How stupid are these execs?

Sweet. Electronic Arts has learned nothing.

I don't know why I am still holding hope for Anthem. EA will probably push for predatory monetization models in that game to. Cosmetics are fine. Boosters are questionable. But straight selling the best gear for actual money is scummy, especially if that gear is used to upgrade your character and layer that on top with a random chance where you're not even guaranteed anything good. A RNG based character progression system you can partake in with real money is a terrible idea and man if they don't keep that out of Anthem they will have another less than stellar "units shipped" figure and BioWare will die under EA like many developers before them.
