Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Underperforms, Microtransactions Coming Back

Microtransactions are coming back "in the next few months."

[UPDATE] EA confirmed to WSJ that Battlefront II shipped 9 million copies during its launch quarter. This is down significantly from the 13 million copies the 2015 Battlefront reboot shipped during its launch quarter. Blake Jorgensen, EA's CFO, said during an earnings call that Battlefront II underperformed. EA had modeled 10 million shipments for Battlefront II during its first quarter.

Additionally, Jorgensen told WSJ that Battlefront II will re-introduce microtransactions "in the next few months." EA removed microtransactions from Battlefront II just before the game's public release in the wake of significant blowback from the community.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Underperforms, Microtransactions Coming Back

EA caught a lot of flak over how Battlefront II allowed you to buy loot boxes--which contained items that affected gameplay--for real money. It remains to be seen what changes there could be to the loot box system when microtransactions do return.

Whatever the case, EA says it believes in microtransactions as a means to "enhance the experience in our games." However, the company cautioned that EA needs to do this the right way to avoid another Battlefront II-type situation.

"Going forward, we believe that live services that include optional digital monetization, when done right, provide a very important element of choice that can extend and enhance the experience in our games," EA said. "We're committed to continually working with our players to deliver the right experience in each of our games and live services."

Also during the call, EA talked about how Battlefront II, overall, was a "learning opportunity" for the company. For starters, it was collaboratively developed between three studios, while the aforementioned controversy over the digital economy was a learning experience as well, the company said.

While Battlefront II may have missed EA's initial sales targets, 9 million shipped in three months is still a massive achievement. Additionally, Jorgensen went on to say that EA is expecting Battlefront II to sell as many as three million more units during its current fiscal year, boosting its total to potentially as many as 12 million units. This would compare to 14 million units shipped for the 2015 Battlefront during its fiscal launch year.

EA added that its efforts to make Battlefront II a game that keeps players coming back is working. Over their respective first three months, Battlefront II players logged twice as much play time as the 2015 Battlefront game.

More details from EA's latest earnings report follow below.

For the quarter ended December 31, EA reported revenue of $1.16 billion, compared to $1.15 billion. EA posted a loss of $186 million during the quarter, which is much worse than the $1 million loss it took during the same period last year. Importantly, EA mentioned that it incurred a $176 million tax expense during the quarter related to the recently adopted Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

There were some financial bright spots during the quarter for EA, including the fact that digital revenue, which is higher margin, is taking a bigger share. For this latest quarter, digital revenue was $780 million, compared to $380 million for packaged goods. For the same period last year, digital revenue was $685 million, compared to $464 for packaged sales.

Here are some other takeaways from the EA report:

  • The "FIFA community" on console alone rose to 42 million players.
  • FIFA Mobile added 26 million players in the quarter alone.
  • FIFA Ultimate Team's player base jumped by 12 percent year over year.
  • Battlefield 1 now has 25 million unique players since it launched.
  • The Sims 4's player base grew by 35 percent compared to last year.

Once I'm ready to buy it and I can find it $25-ish, I'll pick it up then. I really only want to play the single-player campaign, so I don't care about the lootboxes and microtransactions.

@zmanbarzel: Personally I wouldn't recommend it even if you're just interested in the single-player, started off really promising but after the first three levels it's just really disappointing :(

@speed45823: They want people to vote with their wallets .. as voting in a Gamespot thread means nothing .. they still posted pretty good numbers and growth last quarter! it's that which speaks louder to them!

I'm assuming they're bringing microtransactions back for the sole purpose of compensating the underperformance as much as possible. Fat chance of that doing any good though.

@aross2004: Actually EA already told everyone. They said when they removed MTs that they would be coming back in 2018.

@clanpsi: Even before they said that, (right after they removed the MT's), there were tons of people patting themselves on the back in these forums, claiming some kind of victory over the big evil corporation.

I was hoping that people would have enough sense to realize that nothing had changed, but I guess that was too much to hope for.

So yeah, told you so...

@aross2004: Ofcourse something didchange and it would idiotic to say it hasnt (forgive me for the phrase).

EA did cut the prices a lot, and "probably" they will be stupid to do the same anti-consumer shenanigans.

That said, the question is if the stuff they changed is enough. IMO it isnt and they need to do much more.

We all knew this day was coming. And since no one is playing it anymore, yeah, I don't think anyone cares. Battlefront 2 is dead in the water

Oh, EA didn't learn anything. I'm not surprised, but they've effectively killed Battlefront 2 now. I mean, it was nearly dead, but this is it for the game.

Andrew Wilson (EA CEO) needs to be fired. These loot boxes are coming from him, dubbed the Wilson Lootbox. That is the only way EA will stop this madness.

Obviously, EA didn't learn a fucking thing. Your product flopped because you said you'd bring micro-transactions back, and the people didn't buy your bullshit. I guess your next game that has them installed and flops might teach you.

@Thanatos2k: No, no. I mean, sure everyone knows that CoD gets hate, but not for having MT or lootboxes. There were many other games before and after EA Battlefront II that have MT and lootboxes, but recieved no where near as much flak as it did.

And the sales and player count charts are a representation of that.

Everytime a MT or Lootbox article comes up now, it's aimed at EA BF2, and sometimes Overwatch.

The hate is definitely not balanced, which makes me believe there is a lot of hate train riding.

@BLiTZ_156: "but not for having MT or lootboxes"

Since when? Activision tries to fly under the radar because they insert the microtransactions after launch, which means they don't get docked for it at the review stage and the initial sales shipments. They have honed their sleaze. But you better believe people notice.

@xhawk27: The problem wasn't the microtransactions. The problem was that Battlefront II had pay to win loot boxes on pre-release.

@xcael: Yeah right.. I say let them drive the prices up and lets see who will buy their games.

I dont know if you have noticed but EA is always at the center of these "declarations". Which is ironic considering they have one of the most offensive DLC and microtransaction polices.

EA will have a problem soon, because they dont innovate enough. Anthem is their only new IP.

@mdinger: There is no possible way Anthem will be a good game. Bioware is fully consumed by EA - you cannot ever produce good games under those kind of conditions. We've already seen the decline begin.

@Thanatos2k: I won't disagree with you, but I still think it will sell enough units to keep Bioware operational (10+ million). While it will almost certainly be packed to the brim with microtransactions and/or lootboxes (to provide "player choice" <gagging>), it will also be a very slick production with a lot of polish and flashy graphics. Prediction: Gamespot will score it an 8/10 minimum, and more likely 9/10.

@mdinger: Who says that's enough? Battlefront 2 sold 9 million and that was a failure apparently! And that game was rushed out the door in a couple years. The dev costs on Anthem must be astronomical, as will be EA's unrealistic expectations.

Gamespot's scores are irrelevant. They have consistently overrated everything Bioware has made like Inquisition and DA2.

@Thanatos2k: While AFAIK the budget of Battlefront 2 hasn't been disclosed, we do know, factually, that GTA V cost ~$265 million (including marketing) - an interesting statistic is how much publishers spend on marketing, often eclipsing the cost of the development of the game itself. Now far be it for me to say GTA V is better than Battlefront 2 (it is), I can't imagine the budget would have been higher. So what, 9 million times $60 (which is low balling, given that a lot of the sales would have been higher priced versions)? That works out to over $500 million, which would equate to a roughly 100% profit margin as a bare minimum. EA doesn't want some of the money, it wants all of the money.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_expensive_video_games_to_develop

Also I actually kinda liked DA2 (while not nearly as good as Origins, I prefer it over the Ubisoft style "open world" busywork they used to pad out Inquisition. Also the characters and story were imo better/more originally written in DA2).

@mdinger: What? No they weren't. Anders was a tragedy. The end of the game was a travesty of player choice. My "trickster" Hawke was making tasteless jokes to a man after his son died. Writing was seemingly random since you were just selecting icons, and not in a good way. The romances beyond awful, especially Anders.

@Thanatos2k: Just can't agree with you. Anders was just one character. Even so. as much as you dislike the writing of Anders (I disagree, but I played a very different persona than you), who do you recall from Inquisition with this much passion? Yeah, me neither. The copy/paste dungeons in DA 2 were inexcusable though.
