The Last Of Us Remake Coming From Naughty Dog, Report Says

A report also mentions a new Uncharted game was in development, while Days Gone will not get a sequel.

A new report from Bloomberg has shed some light on the goings-on at PlayStation, and it appears that despite The Last of Us only releasing in 2013, Naughty Dog is already developing a remake. The report also mentioned that Days Gone studio Sony Bend was developing a new Uncharted game and that Days Gone will not get a sequel.

Sony's Visual Arts Service Group, based in San Diego, has typically supported other Sony studios in the past. However, the studio is said to have begun its attempts to remake The Last of Us about three years ago.

Now Playing: The Last Of Us Part II Video Review

Visual Arts Service Group founder Michael Mumbauer recruited about 30 people, from inside Sony and out, to create a new division that would develop a remake of The Last of Us for PS5, Bloomberg said. The team didn't get funding or support and Sony elected to shift development on the Last of Us remake to Naughty Dog, according to the report.

Mumbauer has since left the company, along with others who worked there. A spokesperson for Sony declined to comment.

The report also mentions that Days Gone studio Sony Bend pitched a sequel to the game, but it apparently did not move ahead despite the commercial success of the first game. Instead of working on a sequel, one team at Sony Bend is now assisting Naughty Dog "a multiplayer game."

The report doesn't say what the game is, but it was previously announced that Naughty Dog is making standalone Last of Us multiplayer game. Another team inside Sony Bend was put to work on a "new Uncharted game" with Naughty Dog overseeing the project, according to the report.

Some higher-ups at Sony Bend were reportedly unhappy about working on Uncharted, and asked to be removed from the game. Sony agreed, according to the report, and Sony Bend is now making "a new game of their own." In the past, Bend has worked on the Syphon Filter series as well as the Vita game Uncharted: Golden Abyss, so this wouldn't have been the first time it worked on Naughty Dog's series.

Naughty Dog has said it won't make another Uncharted game, but the studio previously mentioned that a different studio could come in to make Uncharted 5. It seems that still remains a possibility, even if Sony Bend isn't doing it.

Also in the report, it's mentioned that Mumbauer's team initially wanted to do a remake of the original Uncharted game, but the game "quickly fizzled" due to costs and other issues. So the team moved on to make a remake of The Last of Us with an idea to release it in a package with The Last of Us 2 for PS5.

The new PlayStation Studios boss, Hermen Hulst, said the Last of Us remake was too expensive due to its new engine for PS5 and gameplay redesigns, according to the report.

Instead, Sony put Mumbauer's team to work on The Last of Us II as a co-developer with Naughty Dog to help polish the game, the report said. After The Last of Us II was finished, Sony reportedly asked some developers from Naughty Dog to help Mumbauer's team with the Last of Us remake, but the game later reportedly shifted to Naughty Dog's internal team.

The Last of Us remake, which is said to be known as T1X, is still in development at Naughty Dog with help from Visual Arts Support Group, the report said.

Former God of War and Twisted Metal David Jaffe also revealed he had hinted at this news a few days prior to the report with a cryptic post on Twitter. Rather than be a broad message, it was essentially coded to draw attention to The Last of Us.

It's one of multiple titles that could be in the works at Naughty Dog, as the studio is also developing the previously announced Last of Us multiplayer game. Outside of that, Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann has said the studio might make The Last of Us 3 or a new IP.

Sony has already revived The Last of Us in some form, in 2014 releasing a remastered edition of the PS3 original for PS4. The series continues to be very popular, and just recently, HBO announced that Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey will star in a TV show based on it. If we get the game remake as well, that means there will be three distinct versions of the same story to experience.

Go to Bloomberg to read the full report, which has more details on what is said to be going on inside Sony/PlayStation.

The Last of Us Remastered on the PS4 is already compatible with the PS5 via backwards compatibility. Please put your resources into something which hasn't already been made and isn't already widely available at a very low price for anyone who wants to enjoy it. I'm pretty sure that The Last of Us Remastered can even be run at 4k.

@DIYNoise: The Last of Us Remastered gives you resolution and framerate upgrades yes, it can be played at up to 4k/60, but in terms of the assets like models and textures, it still looks about the same as the original PS3 version and is showing its age.

If the remake comes out when the original is 10 years old or more, I don't see the harm in giving it more of a graphics quality overhaul

@Spartan_418: Remastered also had upgraded combat mechanics. And really, it's not a game that aged so bad to grant a (yet another) remake.

IMO, the only game that comes to mind that truly deserves a remake in current existing tech/engine is Red Dead 1.

I didn't expect this. Not as a good surprise. The Original Game is already timeless, what's the point?

@santinegrete: to change things to make it more seemless with the crappy sequel. like maybe introducing the firefly scientist story and introducing a young Abby and thry probably want to hammer it in that Joel was always the villain even before the last act of the first game so by the time you get to the 2nd game you dont feel as bad that Abby gets her "revenge"

@alastor529: wow, seems like ND messed the storytelling in 2 then, if we have to make villians instead of making us see that all is gray in their decaying world. Except scavs/hunters, f**k those guys.

I thought Nintendough was the king of re-releases, but Sony wants to catch up. Of all the things to release, a game that is heavy on the story that many already know the details of.

If only you didn't butcher the characters in the sequel you could keep making new ones... now your forced to do a remake because you know Abby won't sell.

There’s an obvious reason for this decision....Sony is releasing exclusives day one on pc.

It’s the only justification for remaking a game that has already been remade...Sony are seeing the money ms are making on pc, and want a piece of the pie.

@sealionact: The Last of Us Remastered wasn't a remake and barely even qualifies as a remaster, despite its title. It was the equivalent of just changing settings in a PC game, increasing the resolution and the framerate cap.

I'd rather Naughty Dog just make a new IP. I'm glad they're at least not making another Uncharted. As much as I love the series, again, I'd like to see them do something different.

Are devs really so devoid of new ideas that they can't make a new game? More likely, it's the suits at the publisher that have no imagination.

I understand a port to modern hardware, but this game doesn't need a remake. Just stop, Sony. Just stop.

@asnakeneverdies: why should it be expected to be remade at all? lol

they could jsut as well jsut release a patch that does 4k/60fps and betttter textures and shadow quality rather than a remake in which the story will have differeneces

Well, it was remastered on the PS4. It's aged too well to need a full-blown remake.

I swear, it's like these companies love to lose money. Instead of continuing on with one of the best game's from last-gen, Days Gone, they're going to release another boring, uninspired multiplayer game. Also, a remake for TLOU, despite it being a masterpiece, no one is going to buy because EVERYONE already played the original and the PS4 remaster. We DO NOT need yet another remake. Days Gone's secret ending set up the sequel PERFECTLY. It was one of the best, and most chilling, cinematics I've seen in A LONG time. Aside from it being terrifying, it got people completely invested in a sequel. Just look on YouTube at the COUNTLESS video that theorize what that secret ending means. These companies just love to lose money.

Ugh. More resources spent on the low-hanging fruit of "remakes" and "remasters", instead of producing new, quality IPs or at the very least next chapters for existing titles. I must obviously be in the minority in not wanting to replay a title again on a new system. Perhaps I'm of the very few who actually has decent long-term memory and REMEMBERS HOW THE GAME ENDS. I know the story beats, I know the signature set pieces. Been there, done that, moving on.

And one wonders why new titles are delayed SO MUCH these days. I realize there's a LOT of reasons, but put half - no, one-quarter of the resources being spent on remakes that give us 30 more fps and shinier blades of grass and the ability to see a reflection in a puddle that exists on the screen for all of 10 seconds INTO NEW GAME DEVELOPMENT and I wonder if we see improved release dates.

@Thanatos2k: I guess I would make the argument, do you only watch a movie once?

But yeah I get what your saying, once you know how it ends, it takes something out of it. especially if it is a story that hinges on a "twist."

I do think you notice some details and other such things, you may have not noticed the first time around.

@deth420: Movies are only a couple hours, so low investment there. You can also have them on while you're doing something else.

Also, you usually don't rebuy the movie at full price a second time just so you can rewatch it.

Days Gone.... Gone Nowhere.

It took Bend Studios almost 20 years since their acquisition to make their ONLY original game Days Gone, only for Sony to shutdown the possibility of a sequel causing the most seniors producers to leave while shoving the rest of the studio members as spare parts at Naughty Dog.....

20 years truly wasted at Sony.....no wonder those producers left and never looked back.

@Thanatos2k: Right but it came out on ps3 and it's one of the most well received sony games ever. Plus with all the other remakes like resident evil and shadow of the colosus doing so well, it only makes sense for naughty dog to give it a shot as well. Regardless of what we want or think, it's definitely going to sell.

A remake of a remaster. LOL. I know the game was one of the best games in decades but how many versions do we need? They'd be better off just re-releasing the current remaster and fixing everything people hated about TLOU2. Of course, removing who many have come to see as the true protagonist from the game, no matter how annoying she is to play would be pretty much impossible to do.

A re-remake, not too bad though to play it looking like no. 2, or even if they make a ps5 version with 1 and 2 bundled together
