The Last Of Us Remake Coming From Naughty Dog, Report Says

A report also mentions a new Uncharted game was in development, while Days Gone will not get a sequel.

A new report from Bloomberg has shed some light on the goings-on at PlayStation, and it appears that despite The Last of Us only releasing in 2013, Naughty Dog is already developing a remake. The report also mentioned that Days Gone studio Sony Bend was developing a new Uncharted game and that Days Gone will not get a sequel.

Sony's Visual Arts Service Group, based in San Diego, has typically supported other Sony studios in the past. However, the studio is said to have begun its attempts to remake The Last of Us about three years ago.

Now Playing: The Last Of Us Part II Video Review

Visual Arts Service Group founder Michael Mumbauer recruited about 30 people, from inside Sony and out, to create a new division that would develop a remake of The Last of Us for PS5, Bloomberg said. The team didn't get funding or support and Sony elected to shift development on the Last of Us remake to Naughty Dog, according to the report.

Mumbauer has since left the company, along with others who worked there. A spokesperson for Sony declined to comment.

The report also mentions that Days Gone studio Sony Bend pitched a sequel to the game, but it apparently did not move ahead despite the commercial success of the first game. Instead of working on a sequel, one team at Sony Bend is now assisting Naughty Dog "a multiplayer game."

The report doesn't say what the game is, but it was previously announced that Naughty Dog is making standalone Last of Us multiplayer game. Another team inside Sony Bend was put to work on a "new Uncharted game" with Naughty Dog overseeing the project, according to the report.

Some higher-ups at Sony Bend were reportedly unhappy about working on Uncharted, and asked to be removed from the game. Sony agreed, according to the report, and Sony Bend is now making "a new game of their own." In the past, Bend has worked on the Syphon Filter series as well as the Vita game Uncharted: Golden Abyss, so this wouldn't have been the first time it worked on Naughty Dog's series.

Naughty Dog has said it won't make another Uncharted game, but the studio previously mentioned that a different studio could come in to make Uncharted 5. It seems that still remains a possibility, even if Sony Bend isn't doing it.

Also in the report, it's mentioned that Mumbauer's team initially wanted to do a remake of the original Uncharted game, but the game "quickly fizzled" due to costs and other issues. So the team moved on to make a remake of The Last of Us with an idea to release it in a package with The Last of Us 2 for PS5.

The new PlayStation Studios boss, Hermen Hulst, said the Last of Us remake was too expensive due to its new engine for PS5 and gameplay redesigns, according to the report.

Instead, Sony put Mumbauer's team to work on The Last of Us II as a co-developer with Naughty Dog to help polish the game, the report said. After The Last of Us II was finished, Sony reportedly asked some developers from Naughty Dog to help Mumbauer's team with the Last of Us remake, but the game later reportedly shifted to Naughty Dog's internal team.

The Last of Us remake, which is said to be known as T1X, is still in development at Naughty Dog with help from Visual Arts Support Group, the report said.

Former God of War and Twisted Metal David Jaffe also revealed he had hinted at this news a few days prior to the report with a cryptic post on Twitter. Rather than be a broad message, it was essentially coded to draw attention to The Last of Us.

It's one of multiple titles that could be in the works at Naughty Dog, as the studio is also developing the previously announced Last of Us multiplayer game. Outside of that, Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann has said the studio might make The Last of Us 3 or a new IP.

Sony has already revived The Last of Us in some form, in 2014 releasing a remastered edition of the PS3 original for PS4. The series continues to be very popular, and just recently, HBO announced that Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey will star in a TV show based on it. If we get the game remake as well, that means there will be three distinct versions of the same story to experience.

Go to Bloomberg to read the full report, which has more details on what is said to be going on inside Sony/PlayStation.

Remake already? lol. If Sony had their way, they'd walk into every gamer's house and shove a cd of The Last of Us down their throats. At this point, this game is getting more re-releases than Skyrim is on different machines.

@teshammutna: While I agree about GTA 5 being re-released all over, I don't think it can be compared with TLOU (and neither Skyrim). GTA 5 and Skyrim are open-world games with lots of replay value. As for TLOU, once you're done, you're done. It's a linear experience, no reason to go back to it.

@sleepnsurf: Comprehend much? If you return to a linear game, it's because you enjoyed and want to repeat the original game, you're not looking for a different experience.

@rodoxthedark: Maybe he didn't, but then again, it's still a remake of a game that was already "re-mastered" in 2014. Is this really needed? Wouldn't it be best to release newer games, instead of reboot after reboot?

@rotchild: I was only commenting because he said it like the last one came out recently, the remaster wasn’t a huge leap though, as it was pretty much a PS4 launch title, but I’m thinking if they release it with the second as a bundle it would be a nice package

@rodoxthedark: Sure mate. And while I agree this may appeal to people who have never played the game (and it is indeed, a great game), it's kinda crazy to think about people paying it for a 3rd time (!)

But you have a point, maybe bundling with the 2nd game (for people that never played it), it can be a nice package indeed.

I disagree about the "huge leap" part though. The re-mastered version included improved graphics, rendering upgrades, increased draw distance, higher frame rates (you could opt for 1080p and 60 FPS, or 4K and 30FPS), upgraded combat mechanics and advanced audio options. It was definitely a huge leap from the PS3 version.

The first one is great but do we need another remaster of it? I can just pop my ps4 version in the PS5 and play if I want...

The second one, you would have to pay me to play that again. Horrible game all around.

This is not a game that needs to be remastered. It is too soon to do that for this game. But, I gave up with TLOU when part 2 came out. Did not even fire it up or try it because I am not going to be pressured to watch or accept the LGBTQ crap in it. I played the first one and thought it was a masterpiece. After part 2 came out, can't stomach it anymore.

I have Last of Us for PS3 and the PS4 remaster and have not finished either game even once. I recently tried to go back and beat it very recently after beating the PS5 remake of Demons Souls...and couldn’t do it because I hate playing it. Even Demons Souls was less of a painful chore to beat than Last of Us. Let me be clear, the story and characters and music for LoU are all incredible. The idea is incredible. But the actual gameplay is garbage and I, for one, would be interested in rebooting the series and hopefully making it more modern in terms of gameplay and less of a horrible chore to play through. I’ve actually given up on ever finishing the game. Maybe LoU 2 is better? I couldn’t even bother given my feelings on part 1. So I’d be interested in a remake, but I think they were wise to pass on a new Uncharted. Uncharted 4 was such an incredible experience and wraps everything up perfectly. Giving someone else the U5 seems like a setting that developer up for failure. The best to hope for would be a new type of Uncharted game with different characters or something.

@elviejomanti: lol. Of course. I made it to the point where Joel is injured at the lab/university (?) and out of commission. The story jumps to winter and you play as Ellie who hunts a deer, meets some strangers willing to give her medicine, but then they get attacked by “zombies” and end up in a factory. This was my 4th attempt over a number of years to try finishing the game and realized it would be my last. Instead I re-installed Horizon and played more of that even though I’ve beaten it and put in more than 50 hours. I’d rather play more Horizon than waste more time trying to convince myself LoU is a good game to play. Horizon is a vastly superior game in all possible ways.

@rmulatz: You survive further than I did, I always got fed up with the game in the school basement with the giant bugger that charges you. I think you were RIGHT at the end though, but I doubt if it's worth the trouble trying to finish it.

A big part of why I got fed up around there was it was shortly after I discovered the game's stealth option was a fake choice as there are often scripted 'stealth is over now' trigger points and I'd been finding them as I kept reloading when I'd lose stealth. Worse yet I noticed that when you break stealth in those parts, the enemies you had stealthkilled all get clones respawned. I ran that part several times counting the enemies and looking at their appearances and found I got EXACT doubles if I killed them all with stealth, and if I just went in guns blazing there was simply half as many enemies. From then on I couldn't stop shaking the wonder if whatever part I was on was going to waste my time and resources again if I stealthed, so I started MOSTLY going loud. New discovery: there are parts of the game where if you FAIL to get through stealthily, an unlimited number of enemies continuously stream in until you die.

So there are numerous points where stealth is mandatory, where it's not possible, and where it's optional, and you have no indicators of which is which. In every case, where it's got a set outcome, making the wrong choice is either a failure state where you can spend several minutes failing, or you simply waste resources. It's among the worst game design I've ever seen and it's all compounded by the really pretty bad combat and gameplay.

Sorry for the rant but holy crap it's the most overrated game of all time.

@Xylymphydyte: This is 110% my reasoning and experience as well. Everything you mention, is also what pissed me off and made this game just not fun. You've perfectly hit the nail on the head...the game feels like it just wants to waste your time.

The final "last straw" for me is the point I mention above playing as Ellie in some sort of factory. First, it makes no sense why all these zombies are suddenly after us. I'm in the middle of the woods and there were zero enemies around. But I HAD a ton of items seconds ago as Joel, and the game just takes them away. Gone. Then it puts me in a big fight I have no choice but to get through for "drama"...only to eventually run away once what little resources I had were wasted...end up sneaking through a factory level...then eventually end up in an inescapable room in the factory where zombies KNOW where I am (good thing I was sneaking through the level so well) and are swarming from all sides - even coming in through high up windows despite not being able to climb ladders.

I keep thinking I am close to the end...but then the game keeps going with some other roadblock or distraction. The story, characters, world, music, etc, is all amazing...but playing the game is a tedious bore and full of many issues that, if in any new release today, would be heavily panned and result in bad scores. I've played all kinds of games in my life, this is the first game I've literally yelled out-loud "Just let me PLAY THE GAME!" while actually playing the game. Because the gameplay feels solely designed to get in the way and act as a barrier to progressing the narrative, rather than doing what most other games do which is allowing the gameplay to ADD to the experience.

The Last of us isn't even remotely old enough to be doing a re'make'.
I suspect it's another re'master' but because no one (for some reason) seems to understand the DISTINCT differences between a Remaster, a Remake, and a Reboot - this is probably just misreported at some point in the chain.

@skyhighgam3r: I strongly disagree. The feeling of playing LoU is very much a feeling of playing an outdated game that doesn’t hold up very well gameplay wise. This needs to be a more open-world game like Horizon than the heavily constrained and maze-like gameplay it had. The fake stealth was badly done...the action is decent but the game artificially limits you to deter from fighting. I mean, why can Joel carry 50 different gun but practically no ammo? I love finding ammo laying around only to not be able to pick it up because I already have a whole 8 bullets for that weapon. I love endless waves of enemies who magically know exactly where I am. I love when the game breaks its own rules at times to artificially increase tension. Or when I take out every enemy in a level, only to have 50 more show up for some reason. There are tons of ways this game could be made to update the gameplay and make it more a game where the gameplay truly reflects the concept of the story.

@skyhighgam3r: It was already remastered. It doesnt make sense to create a new team just to remaster it yet again for PS5. The game is already playable on that system at 4K and would only require a patch to run at a consistent 60 FPS which wouldnt have taken long and required so many people. This is being reported as a remake bc thats likely what it was. They were probably going in to do extensive work that takes advantage of the PS5's hardware

If true that's pretty stupid.

Starting to think the first TLOU being my final Naughty Dog game was a good thing.

I actually liked Uncharted 2, but then they just kept taking that concept and adding more walking and talking sections. Instead of improving gameplay mechanics they just kept getting more cinematic too. And to the absurd.

Uncharted 3 in my view was pretty trash, TLOU while pretty cool had a lot of issues. Overall ND games are just 'not for me'. But hope whomever these are targeting for enjoy'em. I just don't think even the most dedicated fan cares for a remake to TLOU.

I swear remasters should be only for games that run like crap, and or are hard to find. Not a game that is easily playable via going to your local Walmart and buying a PS4, and going to the Online store, using a credit or debit card, and pressing buy, and download.

Also, if Naughty Dog should be remastering or remaking anything. They need to do it with Jak and Daxter. Because no one wants to hunt down a PS2. also, it's a really great game series.

Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross

The Legend of Dragoon

Final Fantasy IV, VI, VIII, and/or IX

Xenogears/Xenosaga

Dino Crisis

Silent Hill

Metal Gear Solid

Lost Odyssey

Sony will charge $70 for the rerelease of a 2013 game. Sheep will line up in droves to buy it. As with most things in the industry, gamers whine but end up subsidizing the industry's greed and disrespect anyway.

@GalvatronType_R: I personally buy into a lot of these quick cash grab game ideas like this. But, the reason I don't fuel their schemes. Is because I usually buy it years later once the price drops like a lead weight and goes for $15 to $5. So, they end up making a penny profit off of me. Since the main profit they make off of the game is when it’s at a max price within the first few months.

Man....Naughty Dog used to be one of the most innovative developers out there. Now, it seems, they're just going to go to the UC and TLOU well until it runs dry.

@sebalayo: I have a PS5 and enjoy it, only ever used a trial for GamePass for Sea of Thieves. Was pretty disappointed.

And even I think remaking TLOU is very stupid. Hopefully it's a bad rumor because it's a pretty awful idea, and a waste of the studio.

@sebalayo: Leading up to this current gen, a lot of people were making the exact opposite claim, (that GS is Pro Sony, and anti MS).
