Tony Hawk rides again

Activision pitchman's Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD to compile selected levels from original two THPS games for release on downloadable platforms.

Activision gave the Tony Hawk franchise a year off after the series lost steam at retailers, but the Hawkman is apparently ready to take flight once more.

Can't stop the Hawk.
Can't stop the Hawk.

According to a Joystiq report from the Video Game Awards in Los Angeles tonight, Hawk confirmed for the blog that Activision is working on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD. As the name suggests, the game will be a revamped version of old Tony Hawk content for release on high-definition platforms. In this case, the game is said to compile "select" levels from the first two Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games, including School and Downhill. Hawk added that the game is set for release on "digital platforms" in the first half of 2012.

The most recent Tony Hawk game--last year's Tony Hawk: Shred--was developed by independent studio Robomodo and sold under 3,000 units in its first week. It was the second game, following Tony Hawk: Ride, to use a motion-sensing skateboarding peripheral. While Activision hadn't committed to a new game in the series for 2012, company executives had said they still see potential in the franchise, likening Hawk's staying power to that of NBA great Michael Jordan, who played his last professional game in 2003 but was the cover athlete for NBA 2K11 and one of several for this year's NBA 2K12.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD is expected to receive an official announcement at the Spike Video Game Awards tonight. The VGAs will be broadcast live tonight on Spike TV and MTV2, beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern, 5 p.m. Pacific.

[UPDATE]: In the VGA pre-show, Tony Hawk confirmed that the game will be released on downloadable platforms for under $20 and said Activision was aiming for a summer release.

Fantastic! Arcade extreme sports at its best! How I've missed the days of being confined to a 2 minute run that never ends as long as you keep the manual / grind going. Awesome. Bring on the multiplayer horse or graffiti games!

@ newhighscore : it's a video game, it's not meant to be realistic.

This is awesome, i enjoyed all the THPS from 1 to American Wasteland. Project 8 and Proving Ground were decent, but i jumped off when Ride and Shred came out. Great to see them going back to this with levels from 1 and 2, and it looks like more than a simple graphics cleanup like most HD games, and for under 20 bucks. My idea though would have been to have 8 levels in the game, 2 levels each from THPS 1-4, and maybe a bonus level from Underground. That has been my idea for a while.

wait...was i mistaken in reading this???/ i thought this was a collection from ALL the THPS games...it's just one and two? That's lame man. Way to milk it to absolute death. Because you know they are going to rerelease 3 & 4 HD eventually too then as a separate game when this could EASILY be one game. LAME!

I prefer the over the top nature of Pro Skater just as I prefer Blitz over Madden. Good to see THPS take a step back thereby taking a giant leap towards being a legitimate franchise again.

Just how old is Tony Hawk by now? Shouldn't there be a new king of skateboarding by now? I don't know a whole lot about this subject, but it sure seems like Tony Hawk has been around forever now.

ea's skate is just leaps and bounds over thps. ive been skating for over 20 yrs. thps is fun and the og, but its too unrealistic. skate is as frustrating and rewarding as the real thing. i will stick with it.

THPS2 is one of the best games ever created. As far as the HD remake: Hell no. Stop giving us the same games again.

I might get this. The early Tony Hawk games were fun as hell. After than the series devolved into one suckfest after another. Kinda wish there would be stuff in there from THPS 3 though. That might have been the last really good game in the franchise.

As long as we dont need the kinect or motion gaming im good with it. Honestly motion gaming is NOT the future of gaming. all wee jus is a controller to hold with buttons to press. not that fancy stupid stuff. Gaming is getting lame if they keep this up. You can go ahead and dislike my comment now guys.. =/ im just being honest. gimme a thumbs up if you grew up during the time when classic gaming was alll the rage.

They have already planned to do this many years ago. Tony Hawks 1 and 2 were going to be a HD update for the Xbox, with Tony Hawks X2, way back when. Why are they trying to push this off as something completely new. For skateboarding games, EA skate is beating Tony Hawks with how the game feels and plays. The Tony Hawks Franchise has nothing on them, other than the classic level creater which is simple to use and you'll have decent looking skate parks built in no time. As soon as EA skate brings in a better create a park system, there will be hardly anything left for the Tony Hawks pro skater games for people who want a realistic skating game.

Oh, thank God. This is how Tony Hawk Pro Skater should've always been. Forget skateboard controllers, just give us the pad and we're ready.

Back to where it all started. I remember when my friends and I would play the Pizza Hut demo CD for the original THPS. It only had Tony Hawk, Kareem Campbell, and only one map - the warehouse map shown here. We played that for ages, but finally got the full game when it was released. One of the funnest games from my childhood.

Yes. I'm happy about this, a few years ago my house was broken into and all of my old xbox games were stolen, i had every single tony hawk game up to and including Project 8 on 360. This is a great chance for me to revisit my old favorites without having to repurchase use copies of all the old classics. I simply hope that they physics and score system are not as incredibly outlandish as they were in Underground 2, American Wasteland and Project 8. I'm hoping they 'hawk' back to the physics of Pro Skater 1 - 4. They must include the original skaters and a character creator, level creator, and deck creator better than any of the games! After this however, I have no hope for any new Tony Hawk games. They simply can't do anything that hasn't been done. In fact i'd venture to say that the next logical evolution to the Tony Hawk formula was accomplished by Skate, and i'm looking forward to seeing what EA brings to the table with Skate 4 when it eventually comes out. (on a side note, i'm very happy we haven't even heard of it yet, because it means they are probably putting work into it instead of making it an annual series as i was afraid it was turning into)

Eh... not that excited about recycled content, because I kind of played those games to death. But hopefully this means that they're going to go back to the roots with the next Tony Hawk game.

Why not just reboot the franchise with a whole new Tony Hawk?? Go back to basics but use all of the advances in the series up to TH3. Add Park Editor, Character Editor and Online play and you'd have a winner.

It is unfortunate to see how the only way the Tony Hawk franchise can revamp their name is to re-sell the classics...the only good tony hawks until after Tony Hawk 3.

"Select" levels. Not 1 and 2 in their entirety? Darn. How about the park creator? That was loads of fun, but probably won't be in this either. I'd really like to see a true HD remake of the first two games.
