Ubisoft PS4 Game Sales Double Xbox One

Here's what you need to know from Ubisoft's latest earnings report.

As part of Ubisoft's latest earnings report, the French publisher announced how its game sales break down by platform. In the slide below, you'll see that PlayStation 4 was Ubisoft's top overall platform, accounting for 27 percent of total sales for the six-month period ended September 30, down from 32 percent last year.

Ubisoft PS4 game sales were more than double that of Xbox One, which accounted for 12 percent, compared to 15 percent during the same period last year. The second most popular platform for Ubisoft games during the period was the PC, which made up for 20 percent of sales, up from 15 percent.

The chart also reveals that Ubisoft game sales on Wii outperformed the Wii U by one percentage point.

As for earnings highlights specifically, below is roundup of the key points

  • Revenue was €207.3 million, which was above Ubisoft's target.
  • Ubisoft recorded a loss of €65.7 million for the period, compared to a profit of €17.5 million last year.
  • Back catalog sales jumped by 53.1 percent to €184.3 million.
  • Revenue from digital platforms was €100.1 million, making up 48.3 percent of total sales. This compares to 27.8 percent during the same six-month period last year.

Looking ahead, Ubisoft has a number of big games coming in the next few months, including Far Cry Primal, Rainbow Six Siege, and The Division. In addition, Assassin's Creed Syndicate and Just Dance 2016 were released in October, so their performance was not factored into this report.

"The quality of our back-catalog and the growing digitization of our business enabled us to deliver a solid performance in the first half of the year, even though--as planned--we did not release any major titles during the period," Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said in a statement. "The fact that more than 80 percent of our annual sales are expected to be generated in the second half of the year mechanically weighed on our earnings for the first six months."

Ubisoft will hold an earnings call to discuss these results and more beginning at 9:15 AM PDT / 12:15 PM EDT/ 5:15 PM UK. Check back later for more.

@everson_rm: that includes hardware sales (graphics cards, laptops, various other components, etc. and transactions/subscription revenue from mobas and mmo's etc.) which many pc gamers fail to understand or realize. purely from software sales alone, multi platform games fare much better on consoles and take up a larger piece of the pie.

"Ubisoft recorded a loss of €65.7 million for the period, compared to a profit of €17.5 million last year" - If I were Yves, I would worried about that and the company's longevity and their recent games' quality

@crusaderprophet: No. They'll make a bundle over the holiday. The period is always a down period, especially without releases.

I mean, they may be facing a hostile takeover bid. They're very profitable.

console sales are still destroying pc sales. nothing new to report here. amazing to think that a console less than two years old (ps4) is trouncing the entire pc space on its own lol... wii u sales of 1% is the funniest thing i have seen all day :D

@Xristophoros: Most ignorant thing I've read all day. Go take a look at that poll up there. You'll see that PC is infact the 2nd best-selling market for Ubi games. That puts it above Xbone, PS3, and 360. So f*** off with your ignorancy.

@4kgamer_lmxxx: consoles combined (not including "others" category) account for 61% of the pie. you 4k morons think the gaming industry can survive with pc alone yet it is the other way around. the industry depends on console gaming for it to remain healthy... at least when discussing big budget, AAA games that are not shitty mobas and mmos. the ignorance is on you, bub.

@turianshepard: no, they avoid paying for their games. nearly all multiplatform games have similar sales numbers on pc with the exception of bethesda games due to their pc-centric history.

@Xristophoros: of course it's low for WiiU - they haven't released any games for it. Nothing to sell!

PC sales higher than Xbone. That doesn't seem right.

@saturatedbutter:

PC wins by sheer volume, not difficult to work that out.

Also explains why MS has been releasing more games on PC for titles/studios they own,

@BabeNewelll: Ubisoft has a history of hating on the PC and making half-assed PC ports. Their CEO once claimed a 90%+ rate of piracy for their games on PC. So what exactly about that attitude would lead to higher sales than one of the two main consoles?

@mesome713: Halo 5 sales are great, but that's only within the Xbox ecosystem. 6.6 million of the 10-12m XBONE owners world wide purchased Halo (self included), but Sony has close to 30million consoles sold...so I don't think they're upset at all.

@mesome713: Why would Ubisoft be upset over the success of Halo, especially since Asscreed is still in the top 10? They knew Halo was going to bump the creed down a few notches but they're maintaining. I'm not a Ubi supporter btw, just going off the numbers

@louixiii: I think that Creed brand is way too saturated and people are getting sick of it. Unity didn't help either. Despite Syndicate getting good ratings people also have other titles to play on X1 that are being released in that same window vs sony not having much this fall. So sales are 2:1 in consoles yes but for ubisoft the numbers don't tell the whole story. PS - Why Wii games out perform wii U games....easy...Ubisoft no longer releases anything on Wii U....duh!
