Wii outselling PS3 in Japan 5-to-1

The latest figures from the Land of the Rising Sun show Nintendo steaming ahead of Sony in console units shifted.

April's figures showed the Wii was outselling the PlayStation 3 4-to-1 in Japan, and last month the gap widened even further, with the cheaper Nintendo console now 5-to-1 ahead, reports Bloomberg.

Bloomberg, quoting figures from Famitsu publisher Enterbrain Inc, revealed that 251,794 Wiis had been sold in Japan in May, five times as many units as the PS3. Microsoft's Xbox 360 lagged even further behind, with 11,082 units changing hands last month. Exact figures were not given for PS3 sales, but they are likely to be in the region of 50,000.

The story was much the same in the battle of the handhelds, with the Nintendo DS having sold 620,670 to the PlayStation Portable's 123,673 during May.

@bhatiaa2 - What you fail to recognize is that this is sony's "home turf"... The fact the 360 is not selling in Japan is not news to anyone!

I have a Wii, and honestly can't understand why casuals are so bonkers over this thing. If it wasn't for the VC and having people over I prob wouldn't turn it on. Sony is in big trouble, if this trend continues. Especially amid reports of the possibility of MGS4 going multi-plat, which will hurt sales here in the U.S. I've said it before...losing DQ may really hurt Sony in Japan.

Good for Nintendo. They deserve a break after the typecast fiasco of the GC. Sony brought this on themselves and should have made a far more accessible product for all.

of course gamespot will only tell us in the title that wii is outselling PS3 where they could have easily said that the wii is outselling both consoles or that its outselling the xbox by an even bigger margin....jeez this is rediculous.

Yet more reasons for releasing games on 360 and PS3 for 3rd party developers. Neither will have a big enough installed user base for exclusives to sell enough to recoup their cost and turn a profit. 360 DOES have a signficant worldwide lead, though, so exclusives their could likely sell much better than PS3 exclusives. As for the Wii ...... publishers better not screw this up. It needs more compelling software. Bad. I still can't convince myself to get one yet, but its obviously still a very hot product. With GOOD game development taking 2 years minimum, how long until we see such great software on Wii outside of the big N ... ?

"The only thing that is truly shocking to me is how well the DS is still selling." Handhelds are a whole different story from consoles. With consoles, generally it's limited to one per household, but with handhelds, potentially every member of the family could have one. Imagine a 3-child family, each with a DS of there own. I expect it's a very common occurance, and explains the DS's massive sales figures.

This is tough for sony... This kind of failure in the "home" market will not bode well for them. Lets see a price drop quickly and perhaps they can start to turn this around.
