Wii outselling PS3 in Japan 5-to-1

The latest figures from the Land of the Rising Sun show Nintendo steaming ahead of Sony in console units shifted.

April's figures showed the Wii was outselling the PlayStation 3 4-to-1 in Japan, and last month the gap widened even further, with the cheaper Nintendo console now 5-to-1 ahead, reports Bloomberg.

Bloomberg, quoting figures from Famitsu publisher Enterbrain Inc, revealed that 251,794 Wiis had been sold in Japan in May, five times as many units as the PS3. Microsoft's Xbox 360 lagged even further behind, with 11,082 units changing hands last month. Exact figures were not given for PS3 sales, but they are likely to be in the region of 50,000.

The story was much the same in the battle of the handhelds, with the Nintendo DS having sold 620,670 to the PlayStation Portable's 123,673 during May.

I'm sorry...but I got tired of my Wii after a few weeks. Maybe a month, if i'm lucky. Yeah, its a good console to have when friends come over. But a lot of the games (both 1st and 3rd party) blow. We'll see how long this fad last.............

I'm not too surprised. The PS3 blows. I know, because I own one, sadly. I rarely play it, and when I do there's always an update that takes 10 min. to download and install. It's also expensive and has no games for it worth playing. I'm praying for LittleBigPlanet and MGS4, oh and maybe Final Fantasy. Those games are the PS3's only hope.

I just don't understand how long the Wii can be fun. Don't get me wrong, it is a lot of fun, but that's why I never bought one, as I feel like it would get boring really quick. Especially if you don't have parties at your house every day. And how doesn't person in Japan not have a DS yet? They always talk of all these ridiculous sales, surely they'll get to a point where everybody over there has one, no?

It's funny. Even when the system is being outsold at an unbelievable rate, fanboys just fall back on the "It's just a KID'S system, REAL gamers don't want it" "excuse." Tell that to your precious Sony, I'm sure your delusional support makes them feel better.

I'm actually really surprised in the gap increasing. The Wii is proving to have staying power, especially with the bulk of their best games still not out yet. The same can be said for Sony, but the thing is, the PS3 is not a "fad" and the Wii is. Trust me when I say that calling something a "fad" in Japan doesn't have the same negative connotation as it does in the US. Fads in Japan last for years! Their whole entertainment industry is sustained by them. The PS2 was more of a fad than the PS3 will ever be, which is why the PS2 continues to outsell the PS3 monthly. Four of Sony's next 5 new titles must be smash hits for the PS3 to start a turnaround there, otherwise they will have to suck it up.

@ master_spoon: If you can't figure out the success of the Wii, it probably was not made for you. I've never quite understood why gamers try to act as if every other gamer has exactly the same tastes and desires as them and is just confused. Many gamers like different things than you do and are looking for different things when they go to buy games and a console, and they are the ones making the Wii a success. If you don't like the Wii, don't buy it. The fact that other people out there like it really, honestly does not impact you very much. As for the review scores, I've long felt that the folks at GameSpot are ever so slightly (or sometimes not so slightly) biased against Nintendo. I have never once seen a single game on a Nintendo console where its GameSpot review score was higher than the average score given to it by GameSpot users. In fact, the discrepancy is often as high as one or even two points. See Mario Party 8, which received a 6.5 from the reviewer but an 8.1 from users. Meanwhile, I have seen quite a few instances where 360 and PS3 games were given higher scores by the reviewer than by the users.

"ldksparda21 said: I don't know why they are comparing a high end system to the Wii. obviouly if they were the same price then you could talk but their is a 350 dollar difference." I know you said don't respond, but I'm too lazy to e-mail you personally. The reason why you comapare the two is because there are only three systems out there. So what if the price is drastically different? That should teach Sony a lesson. Price matters more than super high-end extras . . .

The Wii is only selling well because it is a cheap alternative to the 360 and the PS3. Serious games cannot develop for the Wii due to the limited graphic abilities that the PS3 and the 360 offer. The PS3 will pick up sales when the price drops. The 360 will pick up more sales when Halo 3 and other great games come out this fall. The Wii also has no online gaming which today's gamers look forward to. Serious gamers that love the next gen would never even consider a Wii, this is a system for the average household.

The Wii will have future good games out and with games like Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Metroid Prime 3 and Resident Evil 4 comiong to the Wii it's gonn be great. Mario Strikers Charged isn't realeased in Japan yet so there are going to be lots of top games coming by the end of the year.

due to PS3's bad numbers compared to the WII no one is even bothered to notice the abysmal numbers of the 360,its still mind boggling on why the 360 isnt so popular in japan, i mean its a pretty good console with alot of solid titles

Actually, Zelda didn't sell so well in Japan, so that didn't add much to the system's phenomenal sales in that country (North America was a different story of course).

Software will sell the system. There are no AA titles on the PS3, plain and simple. Until those arrive, PS3 will hum along at its current rate. Zelda being a launch title for the Wii was its trump card.

lets not forget that the xbox 360 is still also expensive, and halo 3 is to the xbox 360 what final fantasy 13 will be to the ps3. I think all three companies are going to be alright as the market seems to be expanding to the point where three companies can do well. For instance, im pretty sure alot of ppl who bought a wii have never purchased a console before.

lhardwick692 - Agreed. While the Wii certainly has more good games than the PS3 (not hard to do, I know), it's nowhere near what the Xbox 360 offers. Live is just the tip of an incredibly sexy iceberg, and good games have been coming to the system since March '06 with Capcom's Dead Rising. The Wii is just taking too long, and it's falling into the predictable pattern of waiting multiple months for the Nintendo 1st party games while 3rd parties crap out subpar PS2/Xbox/PSP ports. Nintendo needs to realize that they're not going to get anywhere making three games a year for the super casual gamer that only buys maybe a single game a year. They need games other than Brain Training, Metroid, Zelda and Mario, and they need them now.

grognard > The problem is that the only good games on the Wii are first-party titles. Nintendo knows hot to make its own games on its own system with its own control style. Its a big adjustment for a company to make some good third-party games. If the 3rd party games were actually good, then there wouldn't be much trouble. The "good quality games" that you say we will be lacking is kinda bull. Let's say Sony's PS3 finally flops dead. Games will move to the 360 and Wii. Heck, even Sony will make games for those systems, since they make money on their products. And if the 360 happens to flop (if thats currently possible), then those games will move to the Wii. It will basically be another cycle that Nintendo would stand tall in, once again. It wouldn't be like the gaming crash though, because NIntendo was able to control that, despite the under-handing they did. There's not much games to get for the ps3, even in Japan.

And so the all mighty power of the dollar proves that it has a foothold even in gaming. Really though, the Wii is a great system for what you pay for, and the PS3 is a good system too, but it just needs a price drop and a few better games. However, in my opinion (my OPINION, my belief based on my experiences with the consoles, it may not be the same as yours, don't be a fanboy and try to grill me for it, it's just a waste) the best console out at this time is the Xbox360 due to it's great all around games and extensive Live capabilities. Will this hold true in a year? Maybe so, maybe not. That's why it's sales baffle me.

who cares--i bought a wii and am not exactly pleased with it--sure the controller is ok-but i buy games to sit back relax before going to bed or go to work--and just waving the controller like mad to play just isnt relaxing---plus the library for the wii is growing--slowly but surely-but 90 percent of them arent worthwhile--and alot of games coming out--like prince of persia-using the wii controller and stuff instead of regular controllerused on the xbox and ps2-just doesnt work--so the sales ight be high but the satisfaction level to me is low--the only reason it selling more is it is cheap(er) and the fun factor will lag as the games are lagging as well as it is for all the consoles--but i pulled out my copy of kameo for the 360 and having more fun replaying it than any games i play on the wii--(i have all three consoles--i am a gamer not a fanboy)--soon games will come out but us the consumer are getting ticked off at the lag of games

The Wii is Japan's console, no doubt, and sells vigorously throughout the rest of the world as well. However, Nintendo's never going to dominate the West the way they are dominating Japan. NPD sales show that, as far as software goes, Nintendo's top properties are really their only sellers, unless they throw an extra remote in there. We're just not as obsessed with Brain Training as Japan is.

santiagochile The Wii has the potential to be a great console. The controller is very immersive, and the graphics are not as bad as everyone thinks. There is still a lot of work to be done. Once the Wii's big games come out we will see if they truly take advantage of the controller, have great graphics, and have fun and easy online play. The PS3 on the other hand needs a price drop like now. I'd say at least a $200 price drop. It can still push some units, but it needs to be cheaper. As for the 360, I don't blame the Japanese for not wanting it. - I agree!
