Windows 10 Aiming to Reach 1 Billion Devices by 2018

Windows 10 launches this summer.

Microsoft is setting its sights on a major milestone for Windows 10. The company said today during its Build conference in San Francisco that it's aiming to have 1 billion devices running the new OS by 2018.

"Within two to three years of Windows 10's release, there will be 1 billion devices running Windows 10," Microsoft VP Terry Myerson said during the keynote address, as reported by GameSpot sister site CNET.

Windows 10 launches this summer (the end of July, if AMD is right), and will be available as a free upgrade for existing Windows users for PC and mobile devices. The new operating system also has a renewed focus on gaming.

Also at Build today, Microsoft revealed the name of its Internet Explorer replacement for Windows 10 and announced a new partnership with Unity for HoloLens.

For lots more on everything announced at Build, be sure to read CNET's extended coverage. The event runs through Friday, so keep checking back for even more news from the show.

@davem1992: Win 8 certainly wasn't as bad as it was made out to be. Sure it was a pain to clean spyware from a customer's computer because they decide to click on every kitten screensaver they see. The Metro style UI took me all of 5 minutes to customize to my liking on my work computer.

@shadyshack@davem1992: as soon as I installed Classic Shell it was obvious that Win 8 is actually better than 7. I no longer have complaints about this OS but I'm wondering how 10 will fare on release.

@sammoth@davem1992: I use 8 on everything now mostly for the sync. Now moving between systems is more like windows into the same bigger systems verse having to remember the setup of each one.

How does windows 7 destroy windows 8 when they are one of the same. You can do everything on windows 8.1 that you can do on windows 7 and if you dont know that then you havnt really gave it a try.

@davem1992@sammoth: That's your opinion. I used both I still prefer 7 but, 8 isn't as bad as people claim. Now if you are talking about Vista and I would agree.

@davem1992@sammoth: I think the biggest issue people had was Vista was UAC, but it was the necessary ripping off the Band-Aid, and now application developers no longer require escalated privileges unless it's actually necessary.

My question is, how are they making money on the OS if they are giving it away for free? Thats the scary part about this to me.

@indojimbo: They make their licensing money off enterprise support contracts and OEMs. What little they make off selling upgrade licenses is eaten up having to support old versions for longer. I think Nadella understands that but Ballmer was still thinking in the 80s context.

@sammoth@shadyshack@sammoth: PC market that is continuing to shrink year after year, it will be mostly in IT and Businesses since people at home are mainly on their portables and why MS was making the tablet push with Surface. The Juggernauts in pocket computing Google and Apple are in no way easy to topple. MS is only looking to stay relevant as their mainstay is dwindling away as Google is also taking on the netbook front, not sure why. Oh well, this is business and the way of life.Evolve or get left in the past.

@sammoth@shadyshack@sammoth: correct and if i had to take a guess i would think the next xbox will be a custom built box just like a pc. because it will be cheaper to mass produce that than a full unchangeable system.

@shadyshack@sammoth@shadyshack: I'm not sure it's to that level yet because console prices still have to be dirt cheap relative to performance. That's why they couldn't just use Hyper-V for the XB1 but had to develop a hypervisor specifically for a game system. Eventually it will get to a point the performance/cost ratio makes it not really matter and it can just be a PC in a console box.

Yep. Whether they sell them or not. Whether Windows 10 sucks or not. But hey, it's Microsoft. That's beside the point.
