Windows 10 launches this summer.

Microsoft is setting its sights on a major milestone for Windows 10. The company said today during its Build conference in San Francisco that it's aiming to have 1 billion devices running the new OS by 2018.

"Within two to three years of Windows 10's release, there will be 1 billion devices running Windows 10," Microsoft VP Terry Myerson said during the keynote address, as reported by GameSpot sister site CNET.

Windows 10 launches this summer (the end of July, if AMD is right), and will be available as a free upgrade for existing Windows users for PC and mobile devices. The new operating system also has a renewed focus on gaming.

Also at Build today, Microsoft revealed the name of its Internet Explorer replacement for Windows 10 and announced a new partnership with Unity for HoloLens.

For lots more on everything announced at Build, be sure to read CNET's extended coverage. The event runs through Friday, so keep checking back for even more news from the show.

Use Linux.

Fedora, Ubuntu, Mint, OpenSUSE, Debian, or Elementary OS are all great choices.

@tony_at_home: Great Os choices but, not for common users. Though some have gotten better they will still not outsell or be as popular as Windows user base. Windows has gotten a ton better since 7.

The idea that "Linux is too hard" is an old idea. Linux distributions like Fedora and Ubuntu have since actually become easier to use than Windows 7+

@tony_at_home@sammoth: Try telling that to the average user. Doesn't work that way. Now with Windows 10 being free there is no reason to look anywhere else unless it's your preference.

@tony_at_home@sammoth: Everything seems easier after you know it but it's not in real life. The only way I can use those is because I've been using Unix since the 80s.

If everything seems easier after you know it, why can't one say the same for Windows? Why is it Windows perceived usability is automatically as result of some kind of magic ergonomics, while any suggestion of the usability of Linux is just immediately met with accusations of prior expertise?

If we are coming from the perspective everything is easy once you know it, and everything is harder if you don't know it, no claim can be made that Linux is in any way more difficult than Windows.

@Saidrex@tony_at_home: um no. I've been using Linux since 1995 aside various Unix operating systems, Linux is as functional as Windows is. I can surf, watch Netflix, listen to music, watch movies, write documents with Office files, produce videos for Youtube or presentations or such, Skype, play games, or whatever and without the overhead resource hog that Windows can be.

And there's more games coming for it lately, I can already play Cities Skyline and Civilization V natively and Project CARS has a client coming for it, and I can play a handful of other games via WINE or PlayOnLinux.

@TeknoBug@Saidrex@tony_at_home: I can't run AutoCAD, Chief Architect, Adobe Creative Suite, or Microsoft Office. Those are pretty much everything I use. The Unix desktop period was the 80s and into the 90s but it's long dead now.

@busterfriendly@TeknoBug@Saidrex@tony_at_home: AutoCAD works with WINE, and LibraOffice can handle MS Office docs.

No they don't.

But the fact there are almost no games for those platforms kinda ruins things :(

@Melchior111@Saidrex@tony_at_home: Yea, they pretty much suck for desktops. Headless Unix servers on the other hand are the backbone of the Internet. It really doesn't matter if the kernel is Linux or something else.

Unix is not Linux.

Linux = GNU-Linux.

GNU = GNU's Not Unix.

@tony_at_home@busterfriendly@Melchior111@Saidrex: Much of what people call "Linux" is neither "Linux" or "GNU". It's all just copies of Unix commands and APIs so might as well call it Unix.

No. Gnu's Not Unix. It was built from the ground up as a free alternative to Unix. The reason it had to be build from the ground up in the first place was Unix was a closed environment.

It wasn't copied, because it was literally built BECAUSE copying of Unix wasn't allowed. Hence GNU was made to be "copyleft"

Not, you don't get it.

Code literally couldn't be either seen or copied from Unix. Closed = no access to the source code/inability to modify the source. Stallman had to create GNU 100% from the ground up.

@tony_at_home@busterfriendly@tony_at_home@busterfriendly: We had a copy of the SunOS source code in the 80s so that appears to be false. How it's licensed does not change the technical aspects in any way.

OK. Let me actually get you to spell out your accusation so you actually know what you are saying...

You are saying Richard Stallman had direct access to the source code of Unix (which he did not) and use that to clone GNU (which once again, he did not)?
