World of Warcraft subs fall to 8.3 million

Subscriber base for aging MMO dips 1.3 million in three months; Activision Blizzard posts $456 million profit on $1.32 billion in revenue for Q1.

Gamers are continuing to exit Azeroth. Activision Blizzard announced today that as of March 31, World of Warcraft has 8.3 million subscribers, down from 9.6 million at the end of 2012.

No Caption Provided

According to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, World of Warcraft subscriber declines were mainly from the East, but the Western market also made an impact, he said in a statement. He further explained that subscriber figures are expected to fall throughout the year.

Despite the subscriber attrition, World of Warcraft remains the number one subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game, according to Activision.

By comparison, Electronic Arts' Star Wars: The Old Republic has fewer than 500,000 subscribers as of March 31.

The news comes as part of Activision Blizzard's first quarter earnings report, which saw the publisher post $456 million in profit on $1.32 billion in revenue for the three-month period ended March 31.

Kotick said that though the year has gotten off to a solid start, there is reason to be skeptical about Activision Blizzard's prospects for the second half of the year.

"While we have had a solid start to the year, we now believe that the risks and uncertainties in the back half of 2013 are more challenging than our earlier view, especially in the holiday quarter," Kotick said in prepared remarks. "The shift in release dates of competing products, the disappointing launch of the Wii U, uncertainties regarding next-generation hardware, and subscriber declines in our World of Warcraft business all raise concerns, as do continued challenges in the global economy."

These issues are cause for concern, Kotick said. However, he also acknowledged that Activision Blizzard will be able to deliver shareholder value by employing the same tactics that has made the company one of the industry's biggest publishers for the past 20 years.

"For these reasons, we remain cautious," he said. "However, our focused and disciplined approach to our business has served us well in the past, and through continued investment and careful management of our costs, we expect to continue delivering shareholder value over the long term as we have for the last 20 years.”

Activision is currently holding a post-earnings financial call.

I'd be sooo happy if the company I work for was making close to a half billion in profit :)

Why is it these companies never seem happy with their own profit margins and are always striving for more...!?

Shit and that's only for a quarter...

@pal_080 Businesses and corporations have investors, these individuals invest their funds into various projects and consolidation deals that in turn, may or may not yield a higher profit margin for that fiscal quarter. Higher profit margins can equal, but does not always include, higher salaries for workers, lower product costs for customers, lower service costs, more efficient operation of business, more funds to acquire higher-end tech for [insert purpose here], investment strategies in other businesses or financial dealings designed to increase short-term profit margins. All of which generally benefit the consumer and the investors/stockholders (who often tend to be consumers themselves).

Businesses and corporations need increased profit margins to grow as a financial organism, otherwise it stagnates and goes defunct or is bought out by a rival enterprise. Businesses/corporations are "people" in the sense of property ownership and laws of taxation (makes it easier to manage said financial entity). But, unlike people, the only way for businesses/corporations to grow and in-turn, benefit the lives of its' employees and consumers in a positive fashion, has to have a viable long-term financial profit margin that in-turn increases every fiscal year. The average person, or any person for that matter, can live a life of only having their "needs" fulfilled and that's their choice to do so. A financial market is far different from the individual, and is often not regulated by the culture of a people, but from the simple human desires for aforementioned needs to be fulfilled. That's progress after all and is the driving force behind any successful economy (along with proper regulation against over-speculation; but that's another story for another time).

TL;DR - Reading is good for your minds kids. Put down the games for a bit and do some learnin'.

@pal_080 because that's how businesses grow. In fact that's how anyone grow. If you're satisfied with your current self then you'd never know how far your true potential could reach.

@jyml8582 There's also a point when it becomes selfishness, greed, self indulgence, egotistical, or whatever word you want to put on it. Many large businesses have reach beyond this point and I think gaming publishers in particular are among them.

@gouldjw Last I looked it was the socialist country of Iceland that was the first to come out of the capitalistic collapse caused by greed..Norway never collapsed and didn't allow a handful of people become billionaires with their oil..Also including sweden and finland they have 4 of the top 5 best education of its people and the fewest in poverty..Another country that is also on top is Switzerland..

@GreG975 @Egotte This was a report from RIOT Games themselves. It's no different than some company that makes games like Farmville or Criminal Case or whatever posting a report that they have had over 100 million accounts tied to their game at some point.

@Dark_Mits @GreG975 It's the same as this news "Activision Blizzard announced today that as of March 31, World of Warcraft has 8.3 million subscribers", a report from the company itself. I don't see Activision being more trustworthy than Riot.

And, I may sound naive but... I don't see who else can report account numbers and stuff except the company itself. Who/what else could tell you such figures? Don't you need access to the servers and all data to know them? Then only the company should know.

@Devil_wings00 @Dark_Mits @GreG975 @Egotte The profit margin however is much higher in Blizzard's camp for WoW, than in Riot's for LoL. A sub-based game > than a freeemium-model game. It's not even comparable.

Population size for games means nothing, it's all about the money the company reels in. And in this case, Blizzard wins.

@Dark_Mits @GreG975 @Egotte LOL is also F2P while WoW is a sub based game. The potential for higher numbers is WAY higher for LOL. It's like comparing apples to oranges.

I miss WoW. I used to play but cancelled my subscription when I started University. Now I'm playing so many other games that I don't think I have time for it.

@Salanderr Depending on how long ago you quit it will probably look and play like a completely different game now. Blizz has reworked and retooled so much from WOTLK onward that the game is hard to even recognize for someone who has been away from it for a few years.

For me, the game attacked me on multiple fronts which was smart. First it was vanity. I LOVE Transmog, however I don't really use it because they completely failed in other areas for me. Second was the super fun PvP.

It seems that NPCs are spread out ultra far everywhere. Everything is a confusing clusterfuck. Now I am speaking only for me - but this game just doesn't feel simple to me anymore.

I remember during the Burning Crusade, Shat was kind of "the Hub" where people would chill and I really don't feel that in MoP. The world is too spread out with not enough population to make it feel lively, and then you add all the weird factions who have barely any integration with the story, so suddenly you feel surprised when you discover you have to annoyingly grind reputation for all these stupid people.

You think it would make me invest more time - but honestly it just discouraged me and I quit all together.

I also disagree heavily with the storyline changes (killing of Arthas, killing off the flights for an MMO with such bad graphics and severe lack of immersion) Probably should have done that stuff in Warcraft 4, not make me think of fat people mouth breathing that actively changed the Warcraft universe.

It's upsetting.

@Gigas_Yuu I agree. Warcraft stopped being as interesting and fun when it turned into World of Warcraft. I would have vastly preferred Warcraft 4, especially now that I've seen how they wrapped up WC3's Storyline in the damn mmo.

Didn't do Arthas or any of the characters justice. Hell even BC didn't do Illidan and Kael'thas and my other favorites any favors. Basically it's this lazy "EVERYONE TURNS INTO A RAID BOSS!! Now go find 24 other people and RAAAIIIID THEMMM!!!" storyline every time.

SPOILERS about what's happening to your favorite character in Warcraft Lore:

...they're turning into a raid boss.

What in heck does the Wii U's failure have to do with Activision Blizzard? There is absolutely zero games made or being made for Nintendo by Activision Blizzard. Nintendo releasing an outdated system to open a new gaming generation has absolutely no bearing on the gaming market. None, zero, zip. Maybe the CEOs should get off the golf courses and quit picking generic excuses to explain subscription declines to stockholders.

@Suaron_x You do realize that Activision isn't just PC and WoW. Blizzard would like to touch upon the console industry and if one of the consoles isn't doing well, its just not worth a potential investment into the field.

You also can't expect Blizzard JUST to stay in PC... their roots were in console. If you want to grow... you have to expand your reach into platforms as well as PC. It wouldn't surprise me if Blizzard one day goes to mobile and tablets.

@decoy1978 @Suaron_x Yeah, it seems like people don't remember stuff like Lost Vikings and Blackthorne anymore. Pity, those were good games. I remember when Blizzard had more variety in their catalog. Those were good days.

No surprise here

WoW = Get to max level, gear up in 5 mans/BGs and then

1.Log in on Tuesdays.

2.Cap Conquest points (About 30 minutes of play)

3.Clear most relevant LFR & likely get no loot. (About 1.5 hours)

4.Attempt to run normal mode raids, wipe repeatedly, ragequit (Several hours, but you soon realize this is pointless and give up even trying in future weeks)

Repeat steps 1-3 for a total of about 2 hours of gameplay per week, for several weeks, until realizing this is stupid as hell, then move on to step 5.

5.Quit.

@Snitsky777 about p4. You are not correct, you can do heroic raids too, but dont compalin if you are not skilled neough for them. WoW is declining because everything is served with easy to anyone and not the opposite

@Snitsky777 Yeah, tell me about it.

I was fooled by how fun so many of the story quests were while levelling in Mists. I didn't realize they hadn't changed the endgame at all, and in fact possibly made it even more grindy since Cata and Wrath.

Oh my gosh, the reputation grinds! And nothing buyable with Justice anymore except crap Blue gear and Epic PVP gear that is SO much better than the crap Rare PVE gear.

The only thing I enjoy doing is the Tillers and farming stuff. Ironic, but it's my favorite thing to do, and you don't even get equipment out of it.

@Snitsky777 Don't forget all the reputation grinding and dailies (unless that's what conquest points are I admittedly haven't played the game regularly since Wotlk and quit in cata).

Still sounds like you didn't get into a guild with people you liked. It can make all the difference if you play with people you enjoy playing with instead of pugging with a bunch of mute aholes who are looking for nothing more then the quickest runs.

Still it only extends the life span of 1-4 ;p 5 is inevitable.

Thats pretty good for a 9 year old mmo. The only other game of that age that is still doing great that comes to mind is Eve, which just celebrated its 10th birthday and record subscribers.

Perhaps once wow dies, we can have a few good mmos instead of just one titan that kills everything by merely existing.

and of that 8 million, how many millions of those are from Asian countries? The game has lost a ton of steam here in the states. I don't know anyone who still plays it, and I used to know quite a few people that were really into it for a few years.
