World of Warcraft subs fall to 8.3 million

Subscriber base for aging MMO dips 1.3 million in three months; Activision Blizzard posts $456 million profit on $1.32 billion in revenue for Q1.

Gamers are continuing to exit Azeroth. Activision Blizzard announced today that as of March 31, World of Warcraft has 8.3 million subscribers, down from 9.6 million at the end of 2012.

No Caption Provided

According to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, World of Warcraft subscriber declines were mainly from the East, but the Western market also made an impact, he said in a statement. He further explained that subscriber figures are expected to fall throughout the year.

Despite the subscriber attrition, World of Warcraft remains the number one subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game, according to Activision.

By comparison, Electronic Arts' Star Wars: The Old Republic has fewer than 500,000 subscribers as of March 31.

The news comes as part of Activision Blizzard's first quarter earnings report, which saw the publisher post $456 million in profit on $1.32 billion in revenue for the three-month period ended March 31.

Kotick said that though the year has gotten off to a solid start, there is reason to be skeptical about Activision Blizzard's prospects for the second half of the year.

"While we have had a solid start to the year, we now believe that the risks and uncertainties in the back half of 2013 are more challenging than our earlier view, especially in the holiday quarter," Kotick said in prepared remarks. "The shift in release dates of competing products, the disappointing launch of the Wii U, uncertainties regarding next-generation hardware, and subscriber declines in our World of Warcraft business all raise concerns, as do continued challenges in the global economy."

These issues are cause for concern, Kotick said. However, he also acknowledged that Activision Blizzard will be able to deliver shareholder value by employing the same tactics that has made the company one of the industry's biggest publishers for the past 20 years.

"For these reasons, we remain cautious," he said. "However, our focused and disciplined approach to our business has served us well in the past, and through continued investment and careful management of our costs, we expect to continue delivering shareholder value over the long term as we have for the last 20 years.”

Activision is currently holding a post-earnings financial call.

I wouldn't ever pay monthly subscription for an MMO. GW2 got it right with the flat rate.

@bmart970 critically it was a hit, but the player base is dropping fast which makes it a flop.

wait didn't last year they said they had 14 million subs? and now this year they have 8.7 mil? wow they are losing alot of subs rapidly. i would play it again if it was free. in my own opinion it's not worth 15$ a month.

@Abysshalolover I don't think they ever had more then 12 million active subs and that was during WOTLK. Subs have gone up then down, then up then down, while slowly declining overall since Cata. This has to be the biggest drop in the shortest period of time I can remember though.

@Abysshalolover Last year they had like 10 million subs. It's to be expected that they'd be losing subs for a 9 year old MMO. It's impressive that so many people are still playing honestly. I love WoW, but I haven't really gotten into it again since WotlK.

Most of these subs are fake, as they also count people playing of free 7 days to try new patches/expansions. Still I hope they will make another MMO as good as WoW was some day...

@raiden3788 They don't count trial accounts. Why would Blizzard count people who aren't actually subscribed to the game as "subscribers"? It's easy enough to do the math when you look at Blizzard's recorded revenue, and all their reported numbers are probably correct.

I suspect most of these losses are from PvP'ers. PvP is declining sharply in the west and is completely dead in Asia by now, so yeah...

World of Warcraft has a very healthy PvE game at the moment. The classes are diverse, almost everybody is viable, there's always great new content to explore, things to see and do. The graphics of Pandaria are also substantially better than any previous expansion.

However, the PvP side remains the same old, and there aren't coming enough new maps for both arena and RBG. Almost everyone I know is frustrated with it.

Another thing that is killing World of Warcraft off is power creep. Power creep is a process whereby existing mechanics and items are superseded by more powerful mechanics and items over time. At first, it works really well, but eventually it becomes unsustainable. This has definitely happened to WoW - both in terms of stats where people run around with half a million health - but also in terms of abilities. You take a class from MoP, any class, and slap it into tBC arena with tBC gear, and you'll see something that's so hilarious it is sad. It will make S5 Death Knights look like peanuts.

AoE Death Grip, untrinketable AoE 10 second silences, a single hunter able to indefinitely CC a target, resto druids with undispellable AoE fear, Ring of Peace (movable AoE disarm and silence) and other ridiculously silly things are the beginning of the end.

@Kunasha Honestly PVP hasn't really been a big deal in WoW since BC when arena was first introduced and PVP gear was actually viable to use in raiding. Once WOTLK came around and you could get arena points in any form of PVP and PVP gear was strictly for PVP it's popularity sort of just dropped off.

@Kunasha When PvE got boring I turned to PvP and then they ruined PvP balance in the transition to WotLK so meh I dunno.

I think they probably lost their way already even in Vanilla when they took in a bunch of everquest developers. At least this is what I was reading at the time. They started taking the game in directions they probably shouldn't have.

I could write a book about what they could have done better and what I think they did poorly but in the end I doubt anybody cares.

They still make a shit ton of money and have more subscribers than can be expected from an MMO that old.

I just hope someone will make a better online game soon because I'm not happy with the MMO genre as it looks now. 10000 F2P crappy WoW clones...

@J_Dangerously MMOs need new content to be interesting. As much as I loved the old WoW I don't want to go back and play only that. I wanted to see quality expansions that kept building on the good stuff but they made some weird decisions.

Wait does anyone realize how big 8 mil is? Now multiply that by 15. And Blizz is still one lucky company.. They have done what will never be done again (because of dying sub-model), they have maintain the largest paying sub mmo for 7yrs +.. Even if they drop to 6mil sub by yrs end which company out there wouldn't want those returns on a 8yr old game..

If blizzard releases and expansion with dynamic content and 40 player raids and world pvp events (sieges of cities ?) and event related quests like "go and kill other players not the casual mob" would bring some life into the game.

@S0ulReav3r WoW already did these things in its previous expansions and incarnations. There's a reason theres 25 and 10 man raids. It just gets harder and harder to find dedicated people.

@decoy1978 @S0ulReav3r ya 40 mans died for good reason. Getting 40 people together to do coordinated raid encounters was only for the most die hard of the die hard. It also meant raid bosses had to have simpler mechanics because getting 40 people to do things in tandem is fricken hard lol Raiding used to be such a niche thing in vanilla WoW compared to now because of that very reason.

Most servers had people who would do MC every now and then but the rest of the 40 man content would rarely ever be touched outside 1 maybe 2 guilds per server. Not really good for keeping people excited to play your game when most of the cool content is completely out of reach for anyone who doesn't have the time to dedicate their life to the game.

The same old lul after content. It is amusing to see ppl swan in and claim these numbers are the beginning of the end. After every patch participation spikes up and then dips after a while. Depending at what point they pull the subscriber numbers depends if u see a rise or a fall in numbers.

Context, people!

@McGregor Not fast enough to scare blizz.. In Asia where the most subs are they don't really pay $15 a month, its less for them. And as Blizz said f2p games are becoming more dominant in Asia, not to mention those said f2p game have been increasing in quality.
