Xbox Boss Talks Project Scorpio Pricing, Xbox Game Pass, E3 Timing, Cancelling Games, And More

Phil Spencer speaks.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer appeared on the newest edition of IGN's Unlocked podcast this week where he discussed a lot of interesting topics. In the hour-long conversation, Spencer talks about Microsoft's just-announced Xbox Game Pass, provides an update on Project Scorpio, and explains why Microsoft moved its Xbox E3 briefing this year from Monday morning to Sunday afternoon.

The full interview is incredibly fascinating and well worth a watch if you're interested in learning more about how the Xbox business works. You can watch the entire interview in the video below.

For Xbox Game Pass, which is a digital game subscription service where you can get access to an evolving library of games for $10/month, Spencer said it has been in the works for two or three years. It's taken so long because Microsoft had to get the under-the-hood, technical specifics worked out, while the company also had to sign business deals with third-party publishers.

Spencer also talked about how the Xbox Game Pass library, which will have more than 100 games in it, will not likely see a complete refresh every month. Only a "handful" of games will be added or removed every month. Whether or not a game drops out may come down to a third-party publisher's decision. Spencer said it's important that the games in the library don't feel like trials or demos, and that players can subscribe to the service feeling confident that a game will be there for a long time.

NeoGAF has a roundup of what was said during the talk.

On the subject of Microsoft's E3 switch from Monday to Sunday, Spencer said it was done to help Microsoft's news have more room to breathe. For Project Scorpio, Spencer teased a pre-E3 reveal (though the console will also have an E3 presence of course), but no plans are solidified as of yet. In terms of what the console will look like, Spencer said it will have a "premium" look to it, though it should appear familiar in the Xbox family ecosystem.

"I can't wait to show people what it looks like," Spencer said.

The much-discussed topic of pricing for Project Scorpio also came up. Spencer did not give anything away, but said again that people can expect a "premium" price.

"I call it a premium console because I want people to be clear that the customer we're building that for is the premium gaming customer," Spencer said. "The person who buys the majority of the games, the person who's playing the most games, spending the most hours, spending the most dollars. It's like our Elite controller. I call that a premium controller."

"I'm not trying to scare anybody on the price. We're going to come out on a price that we think is fair for the product that we build and the customers will tell us as they always do. I call it premium because I don't want people to get confused that somehow Scorpio is the thing that is going to take over the Xbox line."

Spencer added that he fully expects that Xbox One S, with its lower relative price point, will sell far better than Project Scorpio.

"The majority of the consoles that we're going to sell are the Xbox One S and I'm very proud of that," he said.

Spencer also discussed Microsoft's controversial decisions to cancel Fable Legends (and close Lionhead) and shut down Scalebound, two high-profile projects.

"When I look at the investment that I want to make in first-party and that the company wants to make in first-party, I think we're in a position where we're going to be able to do some new and interesting things," he said, adding that those decisions will be good for the company in the long run. "And that meant we had to stop doing some other things in order to create room for that. And that's just kind of the nature of running a business."

"One of the things that I wanted to do when I came into this job ... one of the things was our first-party and how I thought about needing to--this is an unfair word, but I'll say 'rework' our first-party. Regretfully, that meant certain things that we were doing, I thought we needed to do something different. It meant getting back to what I think is a core and building from that."

Also during the podcast, Spencer reiterated that Microsoft has no plans to release a dedicated handheld gaming device, though he has a "never say never" attitude about this.

Spencer also talked about how Microsoft has no deal in place with Alan Wake and Quantum Break developer Remedy for a new game and also revealed that the release date for Voodoo Vince will be announced sometime next week.

I think the price will be somewhere between $600 and $800, guess $700. If it were less than $600 I don't think he'd say "premium pricing" repeatedly.

@waelse1: It won't be more than $599. That's still $200 more than a PS4 pro and anything more than that would be suicidal.

@sealionact: He pointed out the the One S will be most popular even when Scorpio comes out.

It will be over $599, but it's not the only option. If you can't afford the Scorpio the One S is a great option.

@sealionact: $599 is already suicidal. We seen how it went for Xbox One launch at $499 forcing Kinect on people as well at the time if you wanted the system. Only the hardcore Xbox fans bought it initially then they had to price cut fast since $499 don't work in the long term. But MS is brash and has the money to burn again.

I'm really curious the long term future to this. A mid step model line the Pro seems unlikely as a new model better than this in 4 years or so would be expensive. It would mean a dual sku model indefinitely going forward.

The Scorpio then becomes the entry model and they release a new high end model. Thats just my thinking mind, could be wrong. My guess is a $600 price.

@Pyrosa: no way it'll be that much unless it does something magical that's completely out of reach of the pro. If it really does have that same kind of upscaling as ps4pro then there's no way they can charge that much for it, they're not that stupid. I'm betting it'll be obviously better than the pro but not night and day therefor 499 base model is as much as they can charge and not get destroyed . If it's really 699 then theres going to be something special revealed about it that sets it aside from its competition besides it's terraflops

@donpapiray: I'm going with $500, tops. He reiterated Scorpio will be part of the XB1 family. No exclusives (except VR, down the line). The library is identical, save for enhancements. Scorpio is a faster better XB1. There's little reason to buy it for $699. $499 has a chance of decent sales, $399 being preferred. The XB1S will be $199 and likely available for $149 in holiday deals when Scorpio launches.

@donpapiray: Yep -- the GPU alone will cost at LEAST $250-280, even at the volumes MS will be able to guarantee the OEM (which is presumably nvidia). Factor in the 8GB GDDR5 and and a hybrid SSHDD, and it's very easy to imagine them selling at close to cost.

@Pyrosa: AMD makes the APU. Reportedly (posted today) MS received the first samples in October.

The discrete GPU board sells for $149 (4 GB on-chip) and below $199 (8 GB on-chip) right now. Microsoft sources the motherboard and memory elsewhere, AMD provides the bare APU chips in bulk.

@donpapiray: This is where I'm thinking it will be priced...and it's way too high. You've got gamers right now scrambling to afford a $400 system. You hear them talking about waiting to buy a console until a price drop, or selling their existing systems to put money towards a new console. It's comical to think that MS would even try this. But, we'll see how it goes when the announcement comes down. (It may not be quite $699, but it could very well be $649.)

@otterbee: $250ea, since Nov last year, with very few gaps where they weren't available for that. (Well, $250ea plus the annual subscription to each). Only the premium PS4 Pro is $400.

@ellobonegrone: Dude....are you smoking crack again?

No one is calling foul on the Scorpio because it arrives a year later then the pro ..that's all in your head.

You say that Scorpio will be a TRUE next gen console...but we are not living in December, it's only March/2/2017...so as of Right now and the next 9 months, PS4 pro is the most powerful video game console ever built in Human History.

Your post is a delusion and the proof of ass whopping that XBOX One owners received at the hands of SONY this generation...when you are putting all this brain effort and focus on a console that no one has yet seen or proved that it actually exist and delivers on it's specs.

The Scorpio will offer more games ?...then you list old games that have been played to death and all games library that are available today on the XBOX ONE!

So if this almighty backwards compatibility was the holly grail that would have elevate XBOX ONE to the Sky, then why the urgency that Microsoft has to released a new console soo soon? Why hasn't this magical backwards compatibility helped Microsoft be the undisputed winner in terms of console sales this generation? specially on the heels of there most popular XBOX 360 console run they had!?

just stop it fanboy and congratulate SONY for once :)...it's gonna be a great year for gaming for everyone who owns a PS4 and PS4 pro :).

sincerely,

unbiased gaming fan

Can't help but laugh my ass off at the people thinking it would be $400.

You can bet this thing will be between $500-$600. My guess is $600, or $550 at least.

@ellobonegrone: Build a gaming PC with a good CPU from the beginning and all you have to upgrade for years and years to come is the GPU, which I attribute to being similar to buying a new console every handful of years, but that's after you've dumped a big load in the beginning.

Anyway, Phil mentioned it's up to developers as to whether or not they render their games in 4K or choose lower resolutions with increased graphical fidelity, so who knows how many NATIVE 4K games the Scorpio will have minus games made by Microsoft.

Either way, the Scorpio is only a beast by console standards, and that's not saying much. I'd still rather spend the extra coin on a PC and get better framerates, graphics, and 4K in EVERYTHING I play.

And I don't care what other PC gamers have, that's of no concern to me. I know this though, my current PC opens up Scorpio and takes a steamy dump inside of it, and that's BEFORE I plan to upgrade my rig to a 1080ti after I sell my regular GTX 1080. So once again the gap will widen even further in terms of how much better my PC is than Scorpio, and Scorpio is what?....8-9 months away. I'll keep you posted on how nice 4K is until then, just for you champ!

@ellobonegrone: Those aren't "PC gaming rigs". They are counting anyone with a PC who loads Steam client on it. Many of those people are young and don't have disposable income, or are old and play old games (I work with a few of these). They don't want to put the money towards upgrades and don't keep up with the times. Something like Elite or Star Citizen may wake them up. Guess what -- they play console games, too! So do I.

Scorpio is not a "beast" by PC standards. The GPU TFLOP output will be on par with the R9 290 I'be been trying to replace for over a year (hurry up with Vega, AMD) and no word on the CPU.

People can scuff at the lack of UHD support on PS4 Pro, but that, along with a lower performance target compared to rumors for Scorpio, allowed Sony to launch the Pro at the same price as the launch of the original PS4. $400 is a sweet spot for a new console.

$600 really hurt the PS3.

$500 for the original Xbox One w/Kinect was a problem, but possibly only because people didn't necessarily want Kinect.

So for Scorpio to sell well it needs to be between $400 - 500. Anything above that lessens its potential significantly.

I understand why it's premium, but reaching much higher makes it hard to argue for a console against similarly priced PCs. And while MS wants Windows and Xbox to both do well, they don't want to step on their own toes.

I'm excited to know more in a few months.

@Hvac0120:That lower mark is what the Xbox one S was designed for.

It is designed to be the large install base filler like the OG PS4 is.

The Scorpio is designed to be the top end, even topping PS4 Pro. If the differences were minuscule then people would question why pick Scorpio over Pro if it cost more and has slightly more performance and it would give the pro a year headstart.

It is going to be a premium. So that is 450 at the low end which I doubt. Most like 500-550, and the least likely 600. I am thinking in the sub 575 since Phil made the comment about not an outrageous price.

I'll pay 600 if it completely stomps ps4 pro in performance with a year or two of free live thrown in. Would be even more enthusiastic If it was powerful enough to skip the next S version cycle and be powerful for two mid generations.

@Sandpark: the Xbox One S is an Xbox One with a UHD drive. Nothing more. The PS4 Pro is exactly what Sony said it would be - a more powerful PS4.

Microsoft is taking a slightly different approach to reach a silimar goal. The difference between PS4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio is higher native resolutions for Xbox One games running on 4K TVs.

Maybe that extra power comes $100 over PS4 Pro or maybe it's $200, My point is between $400-500 is a sweet spot and going beyond is risky for a large audience.

I'm not sure what special things you think Scorpio is going to do that hasn't been announced that would make the masses want to buy one at a higher cost.

No matter how high it fills in the price range for gaming hardware: PS4/XBO S ($250), Switch ($300), PS4 Pro ($400), Xbox Scorpio ($???), PC ($800-?000), Mac ($2500+).

Really curious on the price, I keep going back to the Elite version they sold only had a better hard drive and the elite controller and it sold for 499.99, I really don't see them selling it at that range or lower not for what they are adding to it. We can be surprised though I would bet on 599.99 and considering that is what the original PS3 sold at launch not bad.

@stylux24: Since Phil wants us to keep in mind that Scorpio is a premium device, I am wondering if they will jettison the hard drive and pack-in controller to save cost?

Do we really need another controller? Most people who would buy Scorpio probably already has several or even an elite.

The hard drive could just have a caddy slot. XB1 already has long time external HDD support, where all my games are located. One would just plug it into the Scorpio USB and download the patches.

You never know. Phil did say Scorpio is for people who "know what a Tera-FLOP is".

@theduckofdeath: he keeps mentioning it's a premium price because he knows most of the gamers are whining babies and most likely will still b!tch moan and complain when the price is revealed because they know no way in hell mommy is going to buy them a Scorpio that plays the same games as the recently upgraded Xboxone S. I feel bad for guys like these because anything they do they are under the scope of a bunch of babies who aren't so perfect themselves.

@theduckofdeath: I actually wouldn't mind that. I like the console ecosystem, but would enjoy the graphical fidelity of a PC, so the Scorpio intrigues me.

I use a 2TB external currently for all my X1 games anyway, I would love to be able to invest in a larger drive I could just slide in to my console.

A brando is a brando regardless of platform, and they always cry louder than the reasonable fans that CHOOSE one platform over another. It just so happens that there are about twice as many people on PS this gen, so of course there is a higher chance of running into some chester spouting off at the mouth with idiocy.
