The rumors were right. Today, Square Enix officially announced Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, a remastered version of the 2012 action game from Canadian developer United Front Games. The game launches on October 10 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, and includes 1080p resolution, 24 DLC packs, "tuned gameplay," and upgrades to the original's audio and visuals.

Square Enix says Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition will showcase a "shinier and grimier" Hong Kong, the game's setting. "The capabilities of today's hardware have truly brought the vibrant Hong Kong experience to life," the company said in a statement.

The DLC bundled in with Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition includes the substantial add-ons, Year of the Snake and Nightmare In North Point. Regarding resolution, Square Enix said the game runs in 1080p, but did not say if this applies to both Xbox One and PS4.

If you're not familiar with the story of Sleeping Dogs, you play as an undercover cop named Wei Shen who is tasked with hunting down the Hong Kong Triads gang in the seedy underworld of Hong Kong. The game has hand-to-hand combat, Hollywood-style shooting setpieces, and racing segments.

Square Enix also published a live-action trailer for Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition today, which you can watch above. The company has not shared any actual images or gameplay footage for the new version of the game yet. It is also unclear if United Front Games is working on Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition or if a separate studio is handling the port.

Earlier this year, Square Enix released Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition for Xbox One and PS4. United Front Games worked on the Xbox One version of that port.

Pathetic that instead of making new games on next gen, devs are just doing remakes.

<< LINK REMOVED >> They are re releasing older games to fill the void before the good games start coming out in 2015. That's what happens when you release a console a year early because of all the whining gamers.

<< LINK REMOVED >> my guess is it doesn't take as long to remaster a game as it does to make one from scratch and they want to give people a reason any reason to buy the new system so having a bigger selection of games might draw people in

In other words, they're cashing in. This is one of the reasons when a new gen arrives it takes forever to get off the ground. The time for developing new IPs is now.

I would of bought this a few months ago, great game, but very bad timing for releasing this. The next 6 months you have a too many great games coming out. Maybe i'll pick this up down the road to add to my collection.

They must be really confident about the improved visuals judging from this amazing announcement trailer with nothing but live action shots. Really makes me want to buy this.

Eddie Makuch refuses to play any game at less than 1080p. He only started gaming within the past few years for this very reason.

I bought sleeping dogs with all DLCs for PC during steam sale. The game has high resolution texture pack installed and I play it in 1080p resolution. Is definitive edition will be so different to make me buy it for the second time? Not sure, I loved it on ps3 and I love it on a PC, this whole remastering business is really confusing and is delaying development of proper new games.

<< LINK REMOVED >> This is not a product for you. This is a product for a) players who haven't played the game and don't have a gaming PC or PS3/360 who want a decent game for their new console and b) big fans of the game on PS3/360 wanting to replay it in all its glory but don't have a high end gaming PC. If you don't fit into these categories then it's not a good purchase, but if you do fit into these categories, it may be a good purchase. Also, I don't think the development of new games is affected by remasters, I'm pretty sure that's a myth.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> The assumption I challenge is that development resources are being diverted from teams developing new games. Dev teams aren't a limited resource, and are constantly changing in size. I'm sure they have a fully committed dev team for new games and are still able to hire/allocate developers on remaster projects.

I believe its an open option if u wanna buy a remastered or hd remake, its up to you, whats there to complain about.. the only thing i found is the price point. Like Metro Redux is a great game and very genuinely priced. I think its worth buying even if you have already played. but sleeping dogs is overly priced... and who the hell cares for dlc's.....atleast not me....

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think comparing remasters to each other in terms of price is a straw man that isn't really fair. Is every remaster a ripoff because Halo: Master Chief Collection has the best value? No. If you feel that Sleeping Dogs is not a good value because it's priced higher than Metro, then don't buy it. But for some people, it will be well worth the full asking price. Twenty years ago, people paid $50 for SNES and NES games that could be finished in a few hours and didn't complain often, but now $60 buys games with dozens of hours and there is constant complaining.

I am not complaining. ..my pt here is does the amount of effort they put in justify price...I dont kno how all this remake stuff works but if u see they already have half of their job done. ..like they have the story, characters etc all ready...so asking same price similar to a new game..is this justified?..and defending price with including dlc's...I dont agree to tat...

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think people tend to get the equations mixed up. You argue that because remastering a game takes "less work" it therefore cannot justify asking full MSRP. However, I look at the value of the game and determine what it's worth from that side. If I played the game that is remastered, or I don't feel that it's worth full price, I either don't purchase the game or I wait until it drops in price. Far too many gamers fall into the trap that they're entitled to play every game at a price that suits them, when I feel that's an immature view.

Keep in mind that far fewer people are likely to buy Sleeping Dogs (or GTA V) so they are not making nearly as much revenue from total sales, even if people buy at $60.

@thegroveman even I dont go by the condition of playing evry game...but by the quality and standard of the game...now take for ex TLOU remastered. ..it took naughty dog 6 months to remake...its not evn half the time it took to make the orig..but with tat game they can take the liberty of asking the price....coz its a masterpiece. ..but not all games can be compared to it...Companies shld understand tat and stop fooling around with a diotic logics of bundling dlcs and asking ng full price..

The point of a remaster is to allow people to play classic games in high quality. Time plays no part in this. A classic worth remastering is a classic worth remastering whether it's 10 years old or 2 years old. The point is you're getting the game in superb quality as a collectors edition. Tomb Raider DE was awesome and so is The Last Of Us Remastered. Metro Redux and GTAV Remastered will be awesome as well. These are all great games. Classics of very high merit. If you have the money get your credit card out and enjoy what's on offer, if you don't, just complain some hate in the comments section and miss out.

Don't get me wrong Watch Dogs is great, but it's also only 2 years old. If you're going to do an upscaled re-release at least do it for a game that needs it.

This game is actually fun don't know what Phillywarrior is hating about it. It's a GTA clone that is free roaming has a decent story line and plenty of side missions, level ups, moves weapons etc. I had this game in my steam library for the longest and was trying to get back into GTA for fun when I encountered the Games for windows live crashing all of the time problem. I gave this game a try and I'm glad I did. Now after logging so many hours into it I'm wondering if I should just wait for this edition or keep playing. Def pick this up when it comes on sale for 7 bucks or less on steam.

I enjoyed this game a lot. I'm not sure if I'd buy again but since I got it free on plus the first time it's not a double dip if I decide too.

"Definitive" stands for, buy all your last gen games again because they look a lil shinier now!!!! This is gonna get crazy, I mean people are actually re-reviewing TLOU treating IT like a brand new game. New consoles should kinda mean new next gen games.....

It's just the GOTY edition more or less, the next gen versions are just ports of the original PC version

Basically turn the PC settings to max & call it a "from the ground up next gen remaster"
