Xbox One's controversial parity policy criticized by Stealth Inc. developer

"For us, it’s an annoyance," says Curve Studios marketing manager Rob Clarke on Xbox One policy.

The UK developer behind recently unveiled Wii U exclusive Stealth Inc. 2, Curve Studios, has called Microsoft's launch parity clause--which only lets indie developers release games on Xbox One if they haven't already launched for PS4, PC, or Wii U--an "annoyance" and a "shame".

"For us, it’s an annoyance," said Curve Studios marketing manager Rob Clarke in an interview with IGN. "It’s preventing us from bringing some of the older stuff through and doing what we want. There’s 40 of us, and we’re still saying we should be able to work around it, so you can imagine how hard it is for smaller developers in one and two man teams who are faced with having to release on PlayStation and Xbox simultaneously. "

Clarke adds that Curve Studios is hopeful about being on Xbox One at some stage. "We’ve been with ID@Xbox since launch," he adds. "We weren’t in the initial announcement only because it conflicted with something going on with Sony at the time. We’ve had the kits for a long time and we’ve been talking to them for a long time about Xbox One. Almost six months. Hopefully we’ll get there soon, but then that’s because we’re big enough to handle the launch parity thing."

Microsoft's launch parity clause has attracted its fair share of criticism from, well, pretty much everybody. "Hopefully Microsoft will drop it," says Clarke. "They’ve been told by a lot of the industry it’d be better if they did, but they haven’t yet. It’s a shame. The frustrating thing for a lot of developers is they have dropped it for a lot of people, but it’s not very clear why. Is it a case of size? Is it a case of how well you know people at the company? It’s not a great way to treat indies because they see it as being unbalanced. I went to a UKIE [trade association] talk about how to get your game on Microsoft systems, and a lot of the reaction seemed to be the demand was there among the developers, but it just isn’t clear."

Microsoft has said that the launch parity clause is considered on a case-by-case basis, but that it will continue in the future. "The winners in all of this are game players," said Microsoft exec Phil Harrison about both Microsoft and Sony's attempts to lure indie developers to their fancy new consoles.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I replied to your same question below. If you are an indie developer and launch on PS4/Wii U first, MS does not allow you to put your game on X1 at all. That limits the potential for sales you can have.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I do think it hurts MS. When choosing a console to buy, people will look to see who has the most/best games. I think the X1 needs as many games as possible to attract customers right now, seeing that they're a few million units behind the PS4.

I also think it hurts devs because by not being on the X1, there's a whole population of gamers that they can't sell their game to.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I'm not ignoring the case-by-case. There's no issues there. I'm talking about the devs that get declined. Why does MS deem them unworthy? Doesn't MS want whatever revenue they get? Doesn't MS want to attract more buyers by having more games (or at least the same games) as the competition?

<< LINK REMOVED >> I really have no idea how that works. But the guys in this article have the ID@Xbox dev kits and somehow still made the game on PS4. So I don't think devs are getting such a great package that they can't make the game otherwise.

Besides, I think it's in MS's best interest to get all the games it can right now. With all the extra sales the PS4 has right now, you'd have no reason not to launch there first.

If this isn't to a devs liking, they can always releases there games through other methods (like via a publisher etc).

With MS handing out so much free of charge, I fail to understand why indies are complaining so much about such a non issue.

I can't believe with their lack of sales that MS isn't eliminating this program, even temporarily. An indie game would most likely land on PS4 based on Sony's embrace of them. And since the game then can't be on X1, guess what? A potential customer will buy a PS4 because he'll look at the games list and see so many games not available on X1.

MS needs as many people as possible to buy the console. They should not be turning away any games.

But that may have been the thought process at MS. We have CoD, BF4, and Kinect! Who needs indies?

MS are greedy, self centered fking assholes... care about nothing but their bank account...

They only accept indies if they exclusively receive them first... haha... no fking wonder this system bombed...

Just sold my Xbox One for $300 cash... loaded my PSN wallet and pre- ordered games up the ass... I don't regret it one bit... and nobody can change my mind...

Unrelated to this, I have a Windows machine that I always defend from my snobby Macbook friends.

I do not hate MS. But I do not like the way they have handled the X1.

<< LINK REMOVED >> There was talk of whether MS should sell or get rid of it's Xbox division. I hardly doubt that they can afford to have "that" attitude.

They don't win with me because they don't have games I'm interested in. And if whatever policies they may or may not have are going to limit the games on the X1, then they still won't win with me.

And again, I said Sony would have done the same. So it's not about MS wining with me. It's just that I think it's a bit naive to think that everything MS built for the X1 was thrown away just because of potential customer complaints. Especially when MS said they were going to show customers how amazing this new way of gaming was going to be.

The truth is that ANY company that saw so much backlash would make changes in fear of not selling their product if they didn't change.

I'm not bashing MS. Any company would do the same, including Sony. But to say that they did it "because they listened" is BS.

I had hopes for them... but reasons like this is why they will fail..

Need before greed...

And what's this BS needing a subscription to stream netflix, hulu, or anything internet related for that matter? Something people already pay for... and they pay an Internet bill, and yet... MS requires money too...

Nothing but greed... one day all these Xbot fanboys will open their eyes and realize... Holy shit, I am getting screwed by MS...

This only benefits Microsoft.

Indie developers with a small budget can't afford to release on multiple platforms at once - hence choosing 'timed exclusivity'.

Microsoft then say "Well you either release on ours first or not at all."

It's bullying, nothing less. Another policy of MS's that's needs reversing.

Its a sensible move to ensure games come to them first. All this bullying rubbish your coming out with is a poor justification for scapping a policy that works in xbox owners favor and not yours.

The only thing that is holding back all these indie developers is getting accepted onto the program in the first place.

Tell that to every indie developer funding their game via kickstarter. They lack the resources to port the game to every single platform at the same time, or they need the funds from one port to fund the other.

@Melchior111 @pspearman @warhawk-geeby But if they are on the ID@Xbox program then MS have provided them with everything they will need, devkits, middleware, technical documentation etc, other than development time, there would be no additional costs to release the game on the X1
