Xbox One's controversial parity policy criticized by Stealth Inc. developer

"For us, it’s an annoyance," says Curve Studios marketing manager Rob Clarke on Xbox One policy.

The UK developer behind recently unveiled Wii U exclusive Stealth Inc. 2, Curve Studios, has called Microsoft's launch parity clause--which only lets indie developers release games on Xbox One if they haven't already launched for PS4, PC, or Wii U--an "annoyance" and a "shame".

"For us, it’s an annoyance," said Curve Studios marketing manager Rob Clarke in an interview with IGN. "It’s preventing us from bringing some of the older stuff through and doing what we want. There’s 40 of us, and we’re still saying we should be able to work around it, so you can imagine how hard it is for smaller developers in one and two man teams who are faced with having to release on PlayStation and Xbox simultaneously. "

Clarke adds that Curve Studios is hopeful about being on Xbox One at some stage. "We’ve been with ID@Xbox since launch," he adds. "We weren’t in the initial announcement only because it conflicted with something going on with Sony at the time. We’ve had the kits for a long time and we’ve been talking to them for a long time about Xbox One. Almost six months. Hopefully we’ll get there soon, but then that’s because we’re big enough to handle the launch parity thing."

Microsoft's launch parity clause has attracted its fair share of criticism from, well, pretty much everybody. "Hopefully Microsoft will drop it," says Clarke. "They’ve been told by a lot of the industry it’d be better if they did, but they haven’t yet. It’s a shame. The frustrating thing for a lot of developers is they have dropped it for a lot of people, but it’s not very clear why. Is it a case of size? Is it a case of how well you know people at the company? It’s not a great way to treat indies because they see it as being unbalanced. I went to a UKIE [trade association] talk about how to get your game on Microsoft systems, and a lot of the reaction seemed to be the demand was there among the developers, but it just isn’t clear."

Microsoft has said that the launch parity clause is considered on a case-by-case basis, but that it will continue in the future. "The winners in all of this are game players," said Microsoft exec Phil Harrison about both Microsoft and Sony's attempts to lure indie developers to their fancy new consoles.

this clause is very good thinking by MS is ensures x-platform games come to xbone first are at the same time... im fine with that lol. Microsoft are ensuring that there gamers both get their games first and never have to wait for a staggered launch.... what bastards. How dare they look after there gamers with this outrageous clause lol

<< LINK REMOVED >> Tell me why. Why would a developer launch first on X1? What do they have to gain? Especially when the PS4 has sold so much more and is seen as the better console by the community (I'm not saying it's true, but the perception is there).

<< LINK REMOVED >> Based on this article, indies are hurt by MS not allowing them to put their games on the X1 unless they launch there first. So if you're an indie and launch first on PS4 or Wii U, you cannot put your game on X1 at all, limiting your potential for sales.

I hope that developers and gamers keep on hitting MS about this. There are a lot of indie games that I would like to have and this stupid rile won't allow them to be on the One. Hopefully they end it soon.

It isn't a big deal. If indie developers want their games on the most platforms possible, they will not give other systems timed exclusivity.

This policy is helping keep the flood of shovelware indies that you find on Steam and PS4 off of XB1. That makes it a good thing in my book. Indies can be great, but we all know that most are not.

<< LINK REMOVED >> So you're OK with Microsoft thinking of you as a dumb consumer who can't do his research and learn what games are good for him and what he'll like? I'd rather have a choice Valve gives me so I can choose what I'd like to play.

@pspearman @seanwil545

Steam games cannot be traded for cash/credit, but they can be gifted so there is some mechanism for off-loading old games.

Personally, the proposed DRM change seemed like a way for MS to get a cut of the used game market, much like Certified Pre-Owned Cars.

There was talk of Digital games costing less, but we hardly see digital games discounted now.

<< LINK REMOVED >> MS wanted to make the Xbox ecosystem more like steam (games digitally managed etc) but they also wanted to allow users the ability to keep trading games in (something which cannot be done on steam). In order to do this, they needed to make sure people connected to the internet once a day in order to make sure people were not playing games they had traded in (via playing offline etc).

This online requirement which caused so much anti consumer rage was actually aimed at creating a much more consumer friendly version of steam.

We are talking gaming systems, but gaming has nothing to do with it?...that's just stupid.

1) Microsoft policy locking free apps behind the paywall...Terrible!

2) Their failed DRM always on policy...Terrible!

I see no benefit for the indie developer in this. Microsoft might provide assistance to the developers, but only for their own platforms which leaves out those looking to publish on the PS4, Wii U, etc. As far as I can see, the majority of indie developers will avoid draconian policies like this and will not release their games on the Xbox One platform. Sometimes, getting a product a bit late is better than never!

<< LINK REMOVED >> Indie developers on the program get 2 free dev kits (which they get to keep) and free access the various middleware like the Unity engine as well as technical documentation and assistance. They are also allowed to release patches and other content free of charge.

Release parity is a small price to pay for everything you get considering it costs nothing to be an ID@Xbox member

As an indie dev who is part of the Xbox ID program, I have to state that these articles you all get so wrapped up in are categorically false 9 times out of 10. As MS said, it's considered on a case-by-case basis and when they do require parity, it's generally for an excellent reason. Microsoft is *VERY* pleasant to work with as an Indy. You just have to be one with the ability to deliver. They're not going to waste time on a little teenage boy one man shop putting in 10 hours a week on another low res super pixelated platformer as it does nothing for the Xbox brand. If you come to play, they give you what you need.

If they'd just ignore the Xbox Microsoft would drop it. The Xbox is in enough trouble they wouldn't want this adding to it. Focus on the Wii u and ps4 and you will hit a lot of gamers. Microsoft would change real quick.
