Yoshida talks all things PlayStation 4

Sony president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida discusses The Last Guardian, 4K and 3D support, and unlikelihood of PS Vita price drop.

NEW YORK CITY--Today during a roundtable session with media, Sony president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida fielded questions about a range of topics concerning the just-announced PlayStation 4 and the growing PlayStation ecosystem.

No Caption Provided

During the hour-long talk, Yoshida opened up on a range of topics, including why Sony decided not to show the PS4 hardware during its announcement last night, the rumors of the PS4 blocking used games, why 3D is no longer a focus for the company, and the status of The Last Guardian, among other things.

Check out Yoshida's comments on a host of topics below.

On possibility of PS4 blocking used games

When you purchase the disc-based games on PS4, it should work on any hardware. So that's what I'm saying.

On whether or not the PS Vita price cut in Japan will become effective worldwide

No, it's not. It's a region-by-region-based decision. Always.

On activation codes for secondhand PS4 titles

It's a publisher decision. We are not talking about it. Sorry.

On Sony's decision not to show PS4 hardware during the announcement

I'm sorry we did not show the hardware. But we have plans from now--in February--through the year for the launch. We like to disclose things based on what we think we really want to communicate first. And next time we will talk about these things.

On 3D support for PS4

No, it's not a focus, but it does [support 3D]. More games will run at 1080p and 60 frames per second, so it's an easier and better experience when you watch on 3D TV. We like what we can do on PS3 using 3D, but now the consumer electronics side [of Sony Corp.] has shifted focus from 3D TV to something else, so if they are not talking about it, why are we?

On 4K support for PS4

The official answer is the PS4 supports 4K output, but does for personal content like photos and videos, not games. PS4 games do not work on 4K.

On support for legacy platforms now that the PS4 has been announced

No Caption Provided

So we have Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls coming out this year; these are pretty big titles. And after that we haven't announced any new software for PS3.

On the possibility of bringing PS3 titles to PS4

It's an interesting concept. We've been upgrading PS2 games to PS3 with better resolution and better frame rate. And people love it. So I think at some point it makes sense and it's great for developers to be able to develop some things that they missed or couldn't get working properly on the older hardware because of the performance to be able to make it better for newer hardware. So we are open to look at that.

On Gaikai integration for PS4 launch titles

So we are saying virtually every PS4 game will be playable on PS Vita via Remote Play. I would be heartbroken if it doesn't day one. On day one, my expectation is that we have to have all games work on PS Vita.

On whether or not Sony would acquire Quantic Dream

We don't look at developers in the world who are making great games for some other publisher and say, 'We have to acquire them." We never do that. The way we acquire developers, when we do, is the natural evolution of the relationship that develops. When it makes sense, we sign a deal. In terms of Quantic, we worked with them on Heavy Rain, and we are working with them on Beyond: Two Souls, and they are showing something very interesting on PS4. So we are definitely developing that stronger relations and we love them as well.

On possibility of PlayStation App store

Personally, I would like to see that. Our PlayStation Mobile is really targeting to do that so smaller developers can really publish from the countries we support. But on the console side, for the PS3 and PS Vita, we still treat publishing like our disc-based model in terms of certification, approval, quality assurance. So we are discussing internally how we can make it a bit more open or a bit easier especially for smaller developers to publish. Because we totally believe in the importance of supporting these smaller developers because they provide really unique and interesting ideas to the platforms.

On what the PlayStation 4 Eye Camera is capable of

The PS4 Eye has two HD cameras, and these two cameras can be used in several different ways. One way is to use it for triangulation, so that space in front of the camera can be measured so that when you do this [motions with his hands] the game knows you are doing this. The other way is to make the augmented reality games like Wonderbook, using one camera for the video streaming, the other camera to…optimize for that task.

"We totally believe in the importance of supporting these smaller developers because they provide really unique and interesting ideas to the platforms."

On whether or not the PS4 will be region-locked

I know the answer, but I don't want to be quoted and get a call from my PR guy saying, 'What did you say?'

On whether or not PSN will remain free for PS4

We totally believe that we want to provide more functionality and more services and more content on the network. And so we are looking at how we are going to structure that. And we are not ready to talk about that.

On possibility of backward compatibility for PS3 discs

No. You can quote me on that.

On whether or not the PS4 will make another appearance before E3

[Looks at PR rep] I hope not (laughs).

On whether or not The Last Guardian is still a PS3 game

I’m not ready to talk about it. Sorry. Because we've broken promises [before], we are waiting for the right time to reintroduce The Last Guardian.

On status of Rockstar's Agent and Square Enix's Final Fantasy Versus

You are asking the wrong person. I have some knowledge, but I'm not in a position to talk about it.

I love the new controller and I'm sure the form factor of the console will be pleasing... I'm buying an extended warranty though when I get the PS4. The industry needs to be brave and have the guts to tell MicroBRIBE to go to hell. XBROKE has destroyed the console scene so I hope PS4 isn't hampered even more than PS3.

@BuldozerX Yeah so? This already exists on current generation platforms. You cant buy a used MMO and start playing it, since the serial code is already tied to someones account. It has always been in the publishers hands.

Sweet jesus. They need to keep the ps4 region free. That was one of the best features of that system. I was able to get games from any country, and I could get versions of the game from the country I choose. I would be heartbroken if they stopped this practice.

@BuldozerX @blueinheaven He tried to tap dance around it by saying that it is capable of playing used games but if their will be codes to play will be left to the publishers. Sony is a first party publisher so will they include a activation code for their first party games. They did not want the big news coming out of their PS4 release to be "Publishers to block used game sales".

@SirSlimyScrotum Exactly man. I still have my original PS1 and PS2 and other consoles. I don't care that my launch PS3 60gb plays PS1 and PS2 games. Stop selling your damn consoles! I don't buy next gen to play last gen. Why is no one bitching their radios can't play 8-track?

@MALMSTEEN4774 @Steven83r @SirSlimyScrotum Not if you have a console selector. Besides the thought of ruining my new console and risk overheating issue by playing a ps3 game kinda sucks. Also would you honestly be wiling to pay 600 for PS4 just so you can play PS3? or pay 400 and stream them? Paying for BC is no different than Sony charging you half price of PS3 all over again.

Leaving the decision to block used games to publishers is the worst thing Sony could possibly do. Look at what happened when they got a whiff of DLC. They started taking massive chunks out of their games before release and selling them on to the poor saps who bought the original game later effectively charging the original purchaser twice as much for the full game.

They'll do the same this time, thinking we can get money for this game over and over. No doubt they'll get the original purchaser for all the DLC and make any subsequent purchaser pay to activate then charge them for the DLC as well.

There is no limit to the greed of the big publishing companies. It's not a case of 'will' they screw you for this, it's a case of for how much.

@BuldozerX @wcbigguy4 That would be fine if it were the same. They way it is presented was what was caught my attention they do not specify online or main game just asked about codes for second hand games and his reply it's up to publisher and were not talking about it seems a weird way to to respond. Leaves it open to debate , Hope it's how you say and not that the publishers and Sony decided that it would be better for marketing for the PS4 to allow used games and let the publishers take fallout from the gamers for requiring codes to play.

@BuldozerX because when I play Assassin's Creed I really don,t give a damn about multiplayer so I can buy the game used 20 bucks don't by the online pass and voila, used game for 20 bucks. but if the publishers make us pay an extra for the used game you will have to pay it to play even the singleplayer part of the game wich unlike EA games believes, is still loved by a solid protion of gamers

I am not ready for PS4, I think the PS3 still has 2-3 good years left. Sony can spend that time perfecting the PS4 flaws so it will be better when it is released. Oh, and it would be nice if they could make the PS4 compatible with PS3 games.

@prototype24red You have to remember that with other manufacturers releasing new consoles, the window to stay competitive just got smaller. If Sony wants to keep pushing the PS3 while Microsoft has an XBOX720 out, it will be hard to compete with the performance that the new Xbox will have. While the PS3 may still have 2-3 solid years left, it will fall behind if they don't release a new console soon. Imagine what would happen if Microsoft and Nintendo were allowed to get 2-3 years of developer time before Sony put a new console in play...that would kill Sony. Then again, the new Nintendo isn't much better than the PS3, so if MS were the only company to release a new console, they would be the "odd man out". Just some ideas. The reality is that they need to release a new console to stay competitive.

@McGregor

SEGA Genesis: released on 1988 - SNES: released on 1990/1991

Dreamcast: released on 1998 - PS2: released on 2000.

Yes, there is a kind of "competitive window", but it's a bit more elastic than just one year. Remember, "all of this has happened before and will happen again". :)

I think that it is completely bogus that the PS4 is not going to support PS3 games or DLC. How many of us have sunk more money than we would like to admit at the PSN and feel that they wasted time and effort to build a better gaming experience that will mean absolutely nothing in a few years? It really wouldn't be a very difficult task for the PS4 to support such recent and already HD titles and their add-ons. And isn't that what the whole purpose of the PS+ Cloud supposed to be for in a sense? I feel alienated yet sorta excited at the same time. Maybe after a while Sony will realize the mistakes they are making.

@epitomosity because PS3 is backward compatible? I still have my PS2 and PS1 so I see no reason to not keep my PS3 to play PS3 games, like I kept my PS2 for PS2 games... it would have been cool, but it's not necessary, and the real reason is becasue they plan on selling them on the PSN, if the colsole was backward compatible they would make less sales from those games...

@epitomosity There's a pretty simple solution to that: keep your ps3.

I'd imagine that the lack of ps3 disc support is probably a cost-cutting measure--having the actual ps2 hardware inside the original ps3 model is a large part of why it was, rather famously, "599 US Dollars" at launch. I doubt they'll be making that mistake again.

And regardless--only fools buy hardware at launch anyway. Keep enjoying your ps3 for a year or two more, then get a ps4 when it's cheaper and has some truly badass software.

@randyfitzps3 @epitomosity actually the reason of the high price at laucnh it the blu-ray player, 7 years ago there was still a war between HD DVD and Blu-ray, Sony decided to inplement the Blu-Ray directly on the PS3, but since the technology was still really new, the cost of those players were astronomical that combined with the console's actual cost made the price skyrocket.

Microsoft sided with HD-DVD but did not have it bundled in the Xbox, it as a seperate player wich is part of why Xbox did better at first, but is also the reason it's suffering from a loos of sales recently, peopel wanting new console don't want to have a console running on DVD a technology that is 15 years old... they want Blu-Ray compatibility wince everything is in blu-ray now. and for roughly the same price you have to choose for a DVD and a Blu-Ray, the answer is simple...

@randyfitzps3 You're not completely wrong or right. I'd say the facts that PS3 had a blu-ray drive and an almost experimental cell processor were the largest aspects in factoring PS3 initial high price. Both were pretty expensive technologies at that time. That being said, yes, an emotion PS2 chip indeed increased PS3s manufacturing costs a bit, but I really don't believe a six-year old chip would be a large factor regarding PS3 initial cost. At PS3's release, PS2s official price was only U$129.00. And that's for the whole console, not just a chip. PS2 itself was released for U$300 and was backward compatible with the first Playstation.

Now, talking about the PS4, I agree with you: it's obvious they're not making it backwards compatible because that would increases PS4 price, but that's also due to cell's processor... peculiarities. It's well known PS3 processor is at the same time very powerful and more unwieldy than a wild elephant on crack. Even Sony is acknowledging this by taking a moment to explicitly say PS4 will use a "PC like" architecture. So, no wonder PS4 won't be backwards compatible, they want to stay as far away from cell technology as possible now.

@Darkefka Notice that I said "a large part" not "the entire reason." There's always multiple factors.

The "war" between blu-ray and hd-dvd was really more marketing hype than anything else...most consumers were fairly apathetic either way.

Microsoft correctly recognized that nobody really cared at the time and played it safe. Their HD-DVD add-on was kind of a known as a POS as I remember it, though I never had any experience with it.

But yes, the blu-ray tech was also fairly expensive as well--Sony sold the damn thing for 600 dollars (although there was the crappy $500 model), and it was STILL at a fairly substantial loss. Not that selling consoles at a loss is bad business, Sony has pretty much always done that. Microsoft too, if I'm not mistaken.

And as far as I know, 360 sales are still incredibly strong--at least in North America-so I'm not sure what you mean by the last part. Especially because standalone blu-ray players are now cheaper than even a used ps3, so it would follow that the only people buying ps3's are people interested in playing video games. The movie playback functionality simply isn't much of a factor.

@nick280455 Get a surge protector and a console selector. Really cannot be that difficult. Who gives a damn about BC. Why are you buying a PS4 to play PS3 or PS2 games on. If you were a true gamer you would keep your consoles and not expect the company to implement all the chips into the next one.

@nick280455 Wait for the ps4 to have good games before you buy one. That way you'll have plenty of time to play The last of us, Beyond, GTAV... The release of a new console it's not the release of a must-have game, no reason to buy at launch.

In reference to the publishers being able to charge to play on "borrowed" or "used" games, I'm hoping they release a family license, that allows multiple users to use it...This is a concern for me, because we have multiple consoles in our house, but only 1-2 copies of each game (we usually aren't playing at the same time), but each kid likes to play on their respective console, in their room.

How the hell is a developer going to know the difference between me using my PS4 game on a friend's system or if it's secondhand?

Is the key going to be tied to your PSN account and will only work if you sign in on your account at a friend's place, for example?

@pgrammus I think if they choose to implement that feature, you will use a license key to unlock the game, similar to what PC users already do.

There's an important question nobody asked: where are the SELECT and START buttons? Is their absence a proof that we will never play PS1-PS3 games on PS4? Unless on emulation the SHARE and the OPTIONS buttons are mapped as SELECT and START....
