Yoshida talks all things PlayStation 4

Sony president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida discusses The Last Guardian, 4K and 3D support, and unlikelihood of PS Vita price drop.

NEW YORK CITY--Today during a roundtable session with media, Sony president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida fielded questions about a range of topics concerning the just-announced PlayStation 4 and the growing PlayStation ecosystem.

No Caption Provided

During the hour-long talk, Yoshida opened up on a range of topics, including why Sony decided not to show the PS4 hardware during its announcement last night, the rumors of the PS4 blocking used games, why 3D is no longer a focus for the company, and the status of The Last Guardian, among other things.

Check out Yoshida's comments on a host of topics below.

On possibility of PS4 blocking used games

When you purchase the disc-based games on PS4, it should work on any hardware. So that's what I'm saying.

On whether or not the PS Vita price cut in Japan will become effective worldwide

No, it's not. It's a region-by-region-based decision. Always.

On activation codes for secondhand PS4 titles

It's a publisher decision. We are not talking about it. Sorry.

On Sony's decision not to show PS4 hardware during the announcement

I'm sorry we did not show the hardware. But we have plans from now--in February--through the year for the launch. We like to disclose things based on what we think we really want to communicate first. And next time we will talk about these things.

On 3D support for PS4

No, it's not a focus, but it does [support 3D]. More games will run at 1080p and 60 frames per second, so it's an easier and better experience when you watch on 3D TV. We like what we can do on PS3 using 3D, but now the consumer electronics side [of Sony Corp.] has shifted focus from 3D TV to something else, so if they are not talking about it, why are we?

On 4K support for PS4

The official answer is the PS4 supports 4K output, but does for personal content like photos and videos, not games. PS4 games do not work on 4K.

On support for legacy platforms now that the PS4 has been announced

No Caption Provided

So we have Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls coming out this year; these are pretty big titles. And after that we haven't announced any new software for PS3.

On the possibility of bringing PS3 titles to PS4

It's an interesting concept. We've been upgrading PS2 games to PS3 with better resolution and better frame rate. And people love it. So I think at some point it makes sense and it's great for developers to be able to develop some things that they missed or couldn't get working properly on the older hardware because of the performance to be able to make it better for newer hardware. So we are open to look at that.

On Gaikai integration for PS4 launch titles

So we are saying virtually every PS4 game will be playable on PS Vita via Remote Play. I would be heartbroken if it doesn't day one. On day one, my expectation is that we have to have all games work on PS Vita.

On whether or not Sony would acquire Quantic Dream

We don't look at developers in the world who are making great games for some other publisher and say, 'We have to acquire them." We never do that. The way we acquire developers, when we do, is the natural evolution of the relationship that develops. When it makes sense, we sign a deal. In terms of Quantic, we worked with them on Heavy Rain, and we are working with them on Beyond: Two Souls, and they are showing something very interesting on PS4. So we are definitely developing that stronger relations and we love them as well.

On possibility of PlayStation App store

Personally, I would like to see that. Our PlayStation Mobile is really targeting to do that so smaller developers can really publish from the countries we support. But on the console side, for the PS3 and PS Vita, we still treat publishing like our disc-based model in terms of certification, approval, quality assurance. So we are discussing internally how we can make it a bit more open or a bit easier especially for smaller developers to publish. Because we totally believe in the importance of supporting these smaller developers because they provide really unique and interesting ideas to the platforms.

On what the PlayStation 4 Eye Camera is capable of

The PS4 Eye has two HD cameras, and these two cameras can be used in several different ways. One way is to use it for triangulation, so that space in front of the camera can be measured so that when you do this [motions with his hands] the game knows you are doing this. The other way is to make the augmented reality games like Wonderbook, using one camera for the video streaming, the other camera to…optimize for that task.

"We totally believe in the importance of supporting these smaller developers because they provide really unique and interesting ideas to the platforms."

On whether or not the PS4 will be region-locked

I know the answer, but I don't want to be quoted and get a call from my PR guy saying, 'What did you say?'

On whether or not PSN will remain free for PS4

We totally believe that we want to provide more functionality and more services and more content on the network. And so we are looking at how we are going to structure that. And we are not ready to talk about that.

On possibility of backward compatibility for PS3 discs

No. You can quote me on that.

On whether or not the PS4 will make another appearance before E3

[Looks at PR rep] I hope not (laughs).

On whether or not The Last Guardian is still a PS3 game

I’m not ready to talk about it. Sorry. Because we've broken promises [before], we are waiting for the right time to reintroduce The Last Guardian.

On status of Rockstar's Agent and Square Enix's Final Fantasy Versus

You are asking the wrong person. I have some knowledge, but I'm not in a position to talk about it.

I think people are making too big of a deal over backwards compatibility. Chances are all of you who want this feature already has a PS3 so what's the problem? Obviously their trying to add some new great features to improve the way we enjoy games and all of that comes at a price. If you want to enjoy PS3 games they will have that feature in the form of stream as well as your favorite PS2 and PS1 games. The fact that your able to read this comment means you already have a legit internet connection so again what's the problem? If Sony were to add every single feature that gamers want the end result would be a launch price of 699-799 which wouldn't sell. Sony already tried this with the PS3. They launched it with bluray which was a brand new format at the time, backwards compatibility with Ps1 and 2, and had improved graphics over the 360, and it had to launch at 600$. The end result was almost a decade-long uphill battle that only now has started to cease only after Sony stripped the hardware down and dropped some of the features including backwards compatibilty.

@Darkefka @ajay1708 Or not sell your PS3 and get a job. You have 7 months or so to save up 500. It's really not that difficult. I already put aside 500 of my tax money and saving up a little more for games at launch. And still have all my launch consoles dating back to N64 and PS1

@Steven83r Because thats the kind of comment a smug ass would give. For the majority of the people out there 500 dollars is alot of money to save up and to just to spend on a non-essential piece of entertainment equipment, you might not be feeling it but there is a recession going on out here in the real world.

@stayhigh1 You are a hypocrite! You said people are trolling then you claimed the ps4 will have better ram than 720 without proof. Then you also claimed (without proof) that the 720 will "crap out" just cause the 360 did so. I have not seen heavier trolling in days! (and ive been reading dozens of ps4 and wii u articles daily!)

@stayhigh1 From the rumors I've read, the consoles are nearly identical. I think the only thing that was really different was the graphics card, and the difference there was brand. I guess the cache storage location was different, but I imagine both will be similar in performance.

@McGregor @stayhigh1 Actually the big difference was the Blu-ray disc what takes 2-4 regular discs for the 360 only took one blu-ray disc for the PS3, plus you didn't have to pay to play on-line

@stayhigh1 lol...speaking of trolling. If the PS4 is as "successful" as the PS3 Sony may have to can their games division.

they have after all admitted the PS3 will not breakeven at this point.

@RyuRadeon They probably didn't want anyone analyzing the box to see what you could connect to the device, how many controller ports, and the like. They are probably still finalizing those parts.

If MS keeps titles backwards compatible over LIVE than that gives developers a revenue stream that makes it much more profitable to develop for over time.

Where as if Sony drops it and makes a developer re-do legacy titles well...not nearly the money or profit margins in that.

The result will be more titles and more developer support for one and less for the other.

@Yuck_Too I think if MS decides to include backwards compatibility, the initial sales will reflect that. It's true that if the launch happened in the 3rd year life cycle of a console, then backwards compatibility would be a non-issue, but because that isn't the case (ever), Sony's decision not to support backwards compatibility, will hurt them in the short term, and as we saw from last gen, getting hurt in the short term, can be detrimental to your long term.

@Yuck_Too @stayhigh1 Sony thinking about havin many PS3 games to be remade for the PS4 also PS3 can be streamed through Gaikai. I buy a PS4 to play PS4 games not PS3. My advice stick with the PS3 till they stop making games for it then put it in your collection

@VipaSho @Sw1tched Because they have no excuse as to why they are doing it other than because it is a shameless money grab. Sony used blue tooth for the PS3 and I am sure they will use it for the PS4. Its not a huge leap for PS3 controllers, technically, to move to the PS4.

@moeman636 But the new features and latency will have an effect on PS4 games compatabilty. Granted though, they could work with the back-catalogue promised if the drivers are implemented.

No backwards compatibility? Unbelievably freaking LAME. If the new Xbox has that, it's going to be a major selling point on their part. I understand that they are probably doing this so that they make more money on PS "Classics" downloadable games, and other extras that may come along with it, as well as still being able to sell PS3 units, but it's still lame. This is a smart move business-wise, but for gamers it just sorta takes away the "by the people for the people" magic of video games that we had back in the day.

@metalgrinch It's understandable given the rather vast difference between the Cell processor and the x86 processor in the PS4. It's not at all likely that Microsoft will have better luck with backwards compatibility, given that they seem to be moving in the x86 direction as well. Still, moving from the PowerPC architecture to the x86 would present fewer obstacles. I somehow doubt that Microsoft is sweating this issue much. After the first six months of a console, backwards compatibility tends to matter very little in new sales.

How come no is asking if the PS4 will play PS1 and PS2 games, i mean its just emulation software, unlike the PS3 which would need a cell processor or some very complex emulation software.

@bubba_1988 Sony said basically "no". PSN content will not be transferable. They are looking at using Gaikai to handle bringing PS1 and PS2 and PS3 titles instead of emulation. Personally, I believe it is a move to prevent pircay, as emulation software that runs on X86 CPUs were to be developed by Sony themselves, they would eventually have a hard time keeping content restricted to the Playstation brand of devices.

@Blade_Runner22 Very much agree with you Blade Runner. He was being held back by his PR, and didn't want to compromise his company before the console was even released.

I'm just glad that some of the most important decisions such as DRM, are being heavily considered by Sony. His reluctance to address the topic means that his company is very hesitant to go through with it.

I'm glad they at least know it'd kill their system if they went through with it. Imagine if Microsoft went after their release and allowed used games after Sony denied them? Whoever releases first simply cannot afford to do it, because it puts too much power and opportunity in their opponent's hand.

The PS3 and the 360 still have a lot of life left in them. I'm not saying that I wouldn't purchase a PS4 in the future but I'm not going to be an "early adopter." Being an early adopter is quite expensive.

However, if I was rich I'll be the first one in line to buy it.

I hope Sony also makes their PSN available in more countries. I have friends complaining that they cannot access and purchase/download games because their countries aren't included in PSN.

No sense in buying early. There are always those early bugs, frustrations with customer service, as well as just a small handful of games. I usually wait at least 1 year. Unless I fall into some major money, I don't see myself getting this on day 1 or even month 1 either.

@toyo75 I think I learned my lesson on this with the 360 and the PS3...It was fun to say I had it, but I didn't really start playing them for 2-3 years because the games weren't that great. I'll pick up the new consoles, but like with the Wii U, I'm waiting until the "must have" titles show up.
