Zelda Breath Of The Wild Is Dense, Challenging, And Full Of Wonder

If at first you don't succeed...

If the entirety of Breath of the Wild maintains the beauty and variety seen in its opening hours, it will be a strong contender for the best Zelda game of all time. I say this fully aware that any new Zelda game comes with a hefty dose of hype and anticipation. Throw in a console launch on top of that, and you wouldn't be blamed for sounding the hyperbole alarm.

However, my enjoyment isn't tied to holding a shiny new piece of plastic or simply swinging a sword as Link. Breath of the Wild is an exciting game for its incredible landscapes and how, with minimum instruction, you're allowed to find your footing as you go. Rather than wade through prolonged tutorials like you did at the start of Wii's Skyward Sword, you pick up new tricks and take to heart new lessons by way of action and exploration.

Now Playing: Hands On With Zelda Breath Of The Wild's First 5 Hours

You have to contend with a dense ruleset, in which nearly every decision you make must take your surroundings into consideration. And because of this demanding yet satisfying setup, you feel like you are constantly learning, often through failure and death. Survival, let alone progress, is a major concern.

No Caption Provided

Though you won't need to worry about hunger or thirst, you have to understand your physical limitations; wander too far up a snowy mountain without the proper gear and you will freeze to death in short order. If you dive into a lake, you better pray you have enough stamina to make it to the other side, and prepare for the reality that you may drown before you get there if you don't. You can also scale cliffs, but you may find yourself stuck mid-climb if the weather takes a sudden turn for the worse as your ability to get a foothold is drastically reduced in the rain.

Enemies, of course, are another chief concern. Rushing into battle is a non-option against anything other than fledgling gelatinous Chuchus or a single Bokoblin warrior. However, small encampments lure you with treasure chests that only open once you've cleared out the camp, so you won't want to avoid mobs for long. You will have to make the most of your surroundings to clear a squad of five enemies and not die--you can only sustain a few hits early on. If you see a red barrel, find a way to set it ablaze. Perhaps wait for nightfall so you can sneak up on enemies and kill a few while they sleep.

Experimenting and learning new tactics will get you far, but you also need to be active and aware when clashing swords or spears. Link is capable of parrying incoming attacks if you press a button within a brief window of time, forcing you to pay attention to every move your enemy makes. You can also dodge and backflip away from an attack, which will leave an enemy vulnerable if they whif. Enemies with polearms or spears present a different challenge: how do you get in close with a considerably shorter weapon in hand? By jumping over their weapon and attacking from overhead (another maneuver you have to learn on your own). Though battles are a tough nut to crack at first, you quickly learn how to overcome these obstacles through necessity and experimentation, a process that's consistently rewarding despite the number of deaths you incur along the way.

Every weapon in the game, thus far, is acquired by defeating enemies. You therefore come across a lot of potential weapons, both in number and variety. You need to be mindful of their durability, which is only detailed in words; the ambiguity this creates is the one shortcoming of Breath of the Wild that stands out early on. Most of the swords, spears, clubs, and shields found in the early hours of the game break after just a few fights. It isn't always easy to reconcile preserving a cool weapon with equipping something that's more common yet weak, but you don't always have a choice. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the long term. The hope is that you will eventually find more durable weapons that can hold a permanent spot in your inventory, but that remains to be seen.

Whenever you take down a monster, they are likely to drop body parts in addition to their weapon. These are but a few of the resources available to you in the field. You can also gather fruit from trees, meat from hunting animals, and valuable minerals by exploring mountains, to name a few. All of these ingredients can be combined in various ways to produce hearty meals at camp fires spread across the world. These will sometimes grant you buffs; hot peppers, for example, will infuse a recipe with freeze resistance, allowing you a window of time to trek through snowy areas.

At the moment, beyond satisfying your curiosity, exploration is driven by shrines--puzzle-driven dungeons littered throughout the map. They are bite-sized, lasting only a few minutes a piece, but they deliver a completely different tone compared to the outside world. At the start of some shrines, you will be granted a new power--known as a rune--and the puzzles you face within that shrine serve as a practical tutorial for your new abilities. Early runes include bombs that can be generated resource-free under a cooldown timer, but you also gain the ability to summon pillars of ice from bodies of water and move metallic objects by controlling a magic, magnetic orb tethered to your body.

No Caption Provided

Each shrine is guaranteed to net you a spirit orb, which act as a currency of sorts that you trade in by praying at a statue to upgrade your health or stamina meters. So far, picking one upgrade over the other has been the hardest decision to make in Breath of the Wild. Don't hesitate to explore and test your mettle, but be sure you know what you're getting yourself into when you pick increased health over stamina, or vice versa. Shrines are common, but not so common that you can expect to quickly maintain a balance between stats.

This all sounds like a lot to manage, and it is, but damn if it doesn't feel good to play a Zelda game with so many variables and opportunities from the start. All of this is to say nothing of the lighthearted events that populate the world, and how they brighten up a dreary trip through rain and fog after a hard fought battle. People are affable and cheeky, and animals prove to be a soothing and beneficial distraction: Nuzzle a dog with your face and become instant friends, tame a wild horse and make it your own, and swipe at a chicken to make it drop an egg that you can put into your next meal.

Breath of the Wild is, five hours in, an enthralling and surprising experience, and the stories being shared among those playing it at GameSpot are all vastly different. Even though we are all playing the same game, we are envious of each other's unique experiences. Breath of the Wild embodies the freedom and danger that made the first Zelda game so enthralling, and captures the feeling of awe that came when Ocarina of Time hit the scene, in this case by layering unspoken variables into seemingly every facet of the game. Based on our early impressions, it's safe to say that Breath of the Wild will forever change what people expect from the series.

Cool feature: The game will let you die if you didn't gather enough stamina to cross the lake. Strategy and preparedness!

Bad feature: The game doesn't hold your hand and tell you how many hits your weapons can give!

.....

A lot of people just take it as "It's Zelda in Open World big deal"

But then you keep reading more and see that Nintendo is doing a lot more with an open world with a lot more details that actually matters instead of a simple world.

This game is going to be great and I gurantee people are going to complain about it.

@5tu88sy: Never played Zelda, and never will ? ok so ? lol...then dont, we will, and you go play...uh whatever it is you play "next" next to what ? Ghost Recon Wildlands ? what are you "nexting" for ? lol there is nothing next at the very moment, oh right..that other 1....thinking, yea Mass Effect....well to each their own...but I find it weird, you'd come to a page of a game (or series of games) you've never played, and ...? what just to say next ...odd, I guess Stussy & Tony Hawk are more appealing lol...have fun though (no hate here, no offensive troll-like gestures) just find it odd, you'd next (the only game that really matters as this point) not nostalgia talking or bias (I play on Consoles/handhelds & PC) variety of series, over a variety of devices, but considering whats out and whats coming out beyond Red Dead 2, you arent "nexting Zelda for anything better" lol you wont play it, others will enjoy a (highly likely) masterpiece, and you'll be playing...IDK? The Last Guardian ? lol enjoy man. And I agree with what all the responses say "I wouldnt go to a knitting forum, just to say I've never knitted, and I never will, next"

Knitters dont care if you dont knit.

Magic: The Gathering players dont care if you dont play or never will (or find it gay).

Same w/ Zelda fans, or Mario fans, or (any damn series for that matter).

Cool 1 less person buying it, 18 million others will. You wont be missed lol

@kalloran: I never understand people who post about stuff that doesn't interest them. I wouldn't go on a knitting forum, for example, to say I don't knit so why are you wasting your time with posting on gaming articles that you say you're not bothered about.

@toffifee: That is true but wouldn't you rather spend your time commenting on the games that do interest you rather then trawl through all the comment boards on ones that don't?

Gaming is diverse and varied so why not go play a game or comment on games that you do like, and don't waste your precious time on those games that you don't.

@xshinobi: thats you, i loved Twilight Princess = one of the most acclaimed games of its game did very well, skyward sword = also loved it, not nostalgia, I'm just an older gamer, who games on PCs, consoles & handhelds, a wide variety of genres (platforming, retro-indie platformers, arpgs, rpgs, jrpgs/western open world, racing/sim, you name it) but I've yet to really find Zelda disappointing, EVEN Spirit Tracks of Phantom Hourglass, besides those 2 early Phillips-CDI games, in actuality in 19 major zelda installments, only 1 real installment failed me....the rest (from the original Zelda, being a benchmark for open world gaming AT the time nearly 31 years ago, to A Link to the Past being a classic, THEN and now, and Ocarina of Time being a benchmark for all 3D gaming from that point onward, w/ introducing new standards in the industry like Z-targeting, and such) Even the lesser popular titles like Oracle of Seasons or (the direct sequel to the original Zelda II - w/ Zelda if theres 1 flop, theres 3-4 classics, and criticially acclaimed titles...but again, to each their own...19 installments, 3 decades, and 108 million copies sold (making it the 2nd best selling Nintendo franchise ever) - sure theres going to be titles & spin offs people dont like, but vs...other franchises where (you get 1-2 good titles, and the next 5 are shit) I'd say Zelda deserves the hype-train IT has, No Mans Sky was a new game, new IP, by a small indie team w/ lofty ambitions, Zelda is ....well Zelda (ding ding) w/ Nintendo, Mr. Aonuma & Monolith SOft (and considering monoliths success's in the multi-decade partnership/development-relationship its had w/ Nintendo & BioWare - I'd say its almost a shoe-in. Nobody is wrong or right though, just opinion...but I agree w/ the OP - besides (maybe Spirit Tracks & the 2 CDI phillips games WHICH btw were the ONLY zelda titles NOT produced by Nintendo or Monolith Soft IN house) go figure, the biggest flops were not produced by the company that has always controlled the 31-year old Zelda Franchise. I know enough to know that theres a nice sizeable % that didnt like (or felt) Skyward Sword was either as said boring or too linear, too many changes (and the combat mechanics / controls) ...but me , controls were fine, linearity OR open world vast-sized maps forcing exposition & exploration either or is fine by me....I enjoyed Skyward Sword, but only average-enjoyment like for me ? maybe a 7/10, not bad, not GOTY either...but considering that Skyward Sword & Spirit Tracks were "as bad as Zelda gets" THATS quite a positive remark if you think about it, think of Infinity Ward, or Ubisoft and their worse titles (and they have less installments over a shorter period of time) lol.... - to say Spirit T or SS were "zelda franchise at its lowest" is like saying "a great franchise has 2-3 games that were...only semi-good, and still sold well & were enjoyed by millions" LOL - the rest ? either great, or modern classics. So even with a few duds, the franchise is far from "failing". But at the end, we all will feel differently about the game, hope you (enjoy it) - or dont I guess. But TWILIGHT PRINCESS now, that is considered by (many) a classic as well, and many enjoyed it SO Much to the point that, some consider it their favorite 2000-esque Zelda, and ONE of their favorites behind a few of the other big ones (Game Boy Adventures of Link, ALTP SNES, and N64 Ocarina of Time & Majoras Mask & GC/Wii U Wind Waker.

The one thing that always comes to mind when playing a Zelda game are the in depth dungeons. Are there no longer dungeons in this open-world Zelda game? Have they been replaced with these short shrines? If so, I'm not too happy about that. Haha. Although, I haven't played it, so who knows, maybe the open world more than makes up for missing dungeons.

@savagerodent: I still have them, but like you it is rare. Now industry is more worried about presentation, or deadlines. The gameplay/performance etc suffers, and so does the fun-factor as a result. The passion for the gaming industry is still there, but its shifted a little towards the reward, rather than the outcome that you get the reward for. If you can follow what I am saying. lol

One of the things I like most about games is being able to be immersed in them. Harder for me these days, but it does still happen.

I look forward to this game as well. But I won't get a Switch till probably mid Summer at the earliest. I can wait though with so many games, and for a somewhat similar style of gameplay I can play Horizon: Zero Dawn on my PRO.

I also hope a VC gets put on the Switch. I want to play Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword. (I never got to play those either, last one was Wind Waker)

@Lach0121: Yeah I'm really not a fan of how the industry has turned out, and I think it has shifted quite a bit to the reward. But I guess that depends on what companies you're looking at.

One way to get me immersed is to have engaging gameplay. Something to always make me think and keep me busy. Narrative hallways (I like to call them that) where you have limited control over your character for narrative purposes takes me out of the game and only makes me dislike narrative in games more. Couldn't get into the Uncharted series because of that. I don't want to hate narrative in games, but they just keep forcing something I'm just not interested in in my face all the time.

I'm getting a Switch along with BotW. I typically don't get a console at launch, but I want the best experience with BotW, and I'll end up getting a Switch anyways.

I didn't play Skyward Sword (motion controls and the linearity of the game turned me off from it), and Twilight Princess I didn't really like, but a lot of other people liked both games, and Twilight Princess seems to be a favorite for a lot of people. I really enjoyed Wind Waker though, and the HD remaster made a couple improvements and added some small neat features to the game.
